Legal Blindness

Hi Graham87

Thanks for the tip. I've been using Wikipedia all along and I want to give back. I mean beyond the occasional $5 when Wikipedia helps me win a bet. I really want to do it right.

"1337" means "I think I'm an computer expert because I configured a fast, expensive computer to play games." See related term "computer-savvy." ("I think I'm an computer expert because I balance my checkbook in Excel.") Now you know.  :-)

What speech recognition software do you use? I would like to not have to hunch over the keyboard.

Thanks for the intro to assistive technologies. I did indeed mean speech recognition. I would like to sit back and free associate - get my hands out of the path. It would be nice if the software didn't transcribe my pearls of wisdom as gibberish or obscenities. The garbage I bought for my old PDA was utterly useless.

Are the technologies for the blind easier to use than the standard interface is for sighted people?

No? That's unfortunate. How do we fix that? It's all a matter of demand for the products, so getting sighted folks like me interested would be a good start. The keyboard occupies my hands and I can't do anything else at the same time, right?

Merging histories

Hi Graham - I've been an admin for a couple of years but until recently I've never been faced with doing a history merge - and, to be honest, I couldn't understand exactly how it's done. I see from the log that you've been doing such merges, and wondered if you could give me a few pointers, or at least point me to where the instructions are all clearly laid out. Graham,

Really sorry to trouble you. I've been asked to step in and rewrite the Octagon Worldwide entry that deleted several times and you kindly retrieved and put at User:S0504280/Octagon Worldwide. I really just wanted some helpful advice as I'm trying to avoid having the entry removed again. I've sharpened up the copy to remove all advertising and make it just factual. hey the site I added that I found today is actually not a fansite for Mr. Swaile. It seems the girl's keeping up on the latest on him and with him since she knows him. I do agree that the other sites had to go (most were dead for ages anyway) and since the guidelines said no MySpace, I removed the link to that particular site. I'm chatting with her on IM and she said it would be no problem. She apologizes for what happened and fixed the About section best she could. She said she heard from him earlier and will pass on your request. Move request

Hi again, I've just noticed that the history of Talk:Rugrats is currently at Talk:RugRats. This must have happend when the page was incorrectly moved on June 15. I'd imagine this needs fixing :-) All Grown Up Whovian 17:03, 21 July 2008 (UTC)

Also, would it be a good idea to move protect the article? Since the show is long cancelled and the chances of it changing its name being zero. And finally, a quick question about page moves; When I tried to move RugRats back to Rugrats in June after the incorrect move by another user, I could'nt because "the page already existed as a redirect". But I've noticed that other wikipedians can perform page moves like that. I.e: "Moving Page A to Page B over redirect". How come other people can move pages over redirects and I can't? Right, I understand. Cheers for the move :-) - Also, another favour, could you check this (Image:Two_All_Grown_Up_books.jpg) image for me? Its one I uploaded and a user who I've had disputes with in the past (incidentally, the one who first moved the Rugrats page last month) has placed a possible non-free tag on it. Although I believe the user to be a troll (I.e; Coming after my image because I had one of his images rightfully deleted last month), I'd rather not get into further disputes if the image really is unfree. Miami

Yes, per my ramblings at Talk:Miami#This page's history, and to keep all the content revisions in one place. The Miami page was moved by cut and paste three times, so a proper history merge is almost impossible. Graham87 01:14, 22 July 2008 (UTC)

Weeeell ... I fixed all three this morning (last night my time), and then noticed that there was still a revision left in Miami with content in it. I wasn't too sure whether I should move that one into Miami, Florida, but decided to do that an hour ago. What complicated things even more is that User:Rambot added info to Miami, Florida while the actual article was at Miami, therefore doing a third cut and paste move and making the early history very confusing indeed. Don't worry, my head is spinning too ... I've been history merging a lot of U.S. city articles, but Miami was by far the hardest one. Graham87 01:36, 22 July 2008 (UTC)

Halifax

Walrus skins - a slippery matter

Hi there - I have noted your change and it makes sense of a sort. I am concerned, though, that the serial edit has moves away from the original draft which implied that Inuits throwing each other around on Walrus skins was more legend than verifiable fact. Main Page proposal

Hi Graham87,

I noticed your comment at Wikipedia:Village pump (technical)#Proposal: Move main page to Wikipedia namespace and I wanted to talk to you a bit more about it. After discussion, it's been decided pretty clearly that moving the main page to Wikipedia:Main Page is not ideal. However, there is strong support for moving the main page to Portal:Wikipedia instead. Also, to ensure a seamless transition, Portal:Wikipedia will be transcluded back into Main Page while we retarget the links to the main page. This will hide the "Redirected from..." text even for screen readers. After all the links have been transitioned and everyone is comfortable with Portal:Wikipedia, Main Page will be made into a simple redirect and "Redirected from..." will show for everyone.

Page moves?

I came across your page moves when you moved Washington University in St. Louis to Washington University. Just as I went to question why you were doing that, I saw that you reverted yourself. After looking at your contribs, I'm wondering why you're moving several pages without apparent individual discussion. Is this part of some sort of bulk move? Have some of these moves been discussed? One of the vandals has created an account!

Hi again Graham, it seems it has been a little too quite lately. But all thats over now! An IP jumping vandal who's main target is the Tommy Pickles article has created an account for himself. His two IP's that I've encountered so far are 74.32.17.213 and 74.32.12.44, his account is User:JohnTBoy. Edits from all three are identical. This user clearly has an agenda to vandalise, he has also created a nonsense userpage that should probably be deleted should you block the user. Crime against foreigners in India

Hi, this article was redirected to Crime in India per Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Crime against foreigners in India. The reason given for most delete votes are it is anti-India propaganda which is not true. I have taken this matter to Wikipedia:Deletion review/Log/2008 August 3. But editors there suggesting I should follow some other process. At that time, i.e. when it was AfDed, Crime in India was a short article, which is not the case now. At present it is not possible to merge the huge information in Crime in India. I want to expand this article and want to keep this article as a separate page. What should I do? I know there is a process for merging articles. But I don't know if there is any for de-merging. I will open a discussion in article talk page. Thank you. This article actually came under attack from nationalist POV pushers. You can see there was a heated debate in Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Crime against foreigners in India. If you were standing out where the photos are taken, sometimes there is a very slight distant surf sound, but hardly registerable, acoustically being open flat ground at the top and on the lower area- nothing to bounce from, but at the pass at sunset (i Have a large number i am not uploading of a sunset at the pass) there is the high beams of the trucks way off in the darkening sky, and no sound, and eventually the sound of the truck arrives, and as you stand on the quartzite like rock on the side of the road on the edge of the hill, the sunset goes bizarre - I could spend ages describing the one we saw last december- some very weird versions of pinks and other colours i dont normally associated with sunsets - anyways - it is possible to be mesmerised by clouds and things on the nullabor - they stretch out so far and the sky seems so big. thanks again - and cheers SatuSuro 14:34, 7 August 2008 (UTC)

My teenage daughter is quite a gifted photographer (well being her father i suppose i think so) and I have tried training her to watch sunsets very very carefully which is what were doing at eucla - as there are quie suprising large number of shifts of colour of the sky in the quadrans - and if there ar clouds or any other particulates like high level dust etc - the sky has a huge range of colour shifts - when i was a kid living near the coast in the old days my parents used to have a comment about the 'bali sunsets' as one of the balinese volcanoes had ejected stuff way up into the atmosphere that were providing very very high sunset light catching - much higher than normal clouds - - hey when i get the time I'll try describing it further for you - the thing is there is a really odd theory which i cannot remember where saw it being mentioned - that suggests humans didnt get the capacity to percieve the colour blue - the colour of the sky - until really recently in evolutionary terms - maybe a few thousand years - I am not sure why or how the theory came from - but I have been taking hundreds of photos in the last year or so of clouds and cloud formations and much less of sunsets - and the whole thing of what a baby nikon camera can do the colour blue just by a few tweaks is quite amazing. the acoustic/smell/body sensations of being around at dusk or dawn in the outback is quite complex - specially where there is birdlife - as some birds are hellish noisy at pre-sunrise and then they calm down once it has risen - and vice versa for sunset - also damp moisture rising in some areas can atually release smells from the soils in the evening which are not present in normal daytime - hey i could keep going on and on i better leave off for the moment - cheers SatuSuro 15:04, 7 August 2008 (UTC)

Having created very erratically the equivalents for Indonesia (without the equivalent of moondynes excellent lead sentence for the category mainspace) I figured we needed to go for it seeing we have a well structured regions of wa article - any article or weather article specially you can link is great as they are usually not created by locals and have shortfalls as far as regional and locations adequately in the lead sentences - slowly but surely all the wa regions will get done - and I hope others might feel inspire as well - considering how big west oz is its crying out to be done - In WA could mean such a wide range of locations - the tying in of regional info seems to be a good idea - but i am always open to any points of where it might not be - as well - cheers SatuSuro 08:22, 8 August 2008 (UTC)

Vandal reporting

Hi! Thanks for reporting User:75.37.6.108. However, I haven't blocked this person, as they did not receive sufficient warnings. The idea is to increase the level of warnings each time they vandalise. This is a fundemental of WP:AGF - we assume that they are just being playful initially, and give gentle level 1 or 2 warnings (see WP:MLT for a full list of templated warnings). When they reach level 3, this is the first assumption of bad faith, after which they will get blocked. See WP:VANDAL for the full warning process. Please don't be discouraged though - your vandal fighting help is appreciated! This post is not meant to chastise you, just to make you fully aware of the blocking process. I think you sent this to the wrong person. I didn't report the user, De728631 did. I did warn the user however - maybe I wasn't communicative enough with them. As you can see in the history of the bocce article, the user (using more than one IP address) removed the section several times without explanation. There are several IP users at the article who want to rid the article of everything but "elite", European bocce. Maybe I should take the article off my watchlist ... I don't really care about the topic that much ... but I absolutely hate unexplained removal of whole sections. Furthermore, there is no policy saying that a block can only be performed after four levels of warnings, and no rule stopping people from skipping warnings if they think it's appropriate. Whoops, my bad. Thanks for your comments, and my apologies for taking your time. You're right about their not being a hard and fast rule about warnings. I often skip warning levels if I think they are being particularly nasty. However, I always tell people to do the full amount of warnings, as the chances are that if they don't know enough about the system, they are unlikely to be able to know when to make judgement calls. Crusty

Can you help me find the Crusty page?

There used to be a page until a few weeks back. Now a search for the term takes you to Crust Punk. When you check the redirect, though, it leads back to a wiktionary entry, rather than the original page.

I've declined this; I'd like to see discussion rather than a prod nuke. One option is to merge it into List of compositions by Johann Sebastian Bach. I hadn't thought of that - I had just asked at Commons:Administrators' noticeboard for the history to be imported, which might still be a good idea, because it would be a good start for a cross-project list of Bach audio. There is precedent for this at List of compositions by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, so I don't see why the same thing can't be done for Bach as well. Graham87 11:25, 10 September 2008 (UTC)

I looked through the talk archives at WP:ACCESS and can't find that we discussed this. Would it work for you to have the first image in a section directly above the heading rather than directly below? Do screen readers have a hard time with that for some reason? The problem is the rule not to sandwich text; if there are more images than text, then the images drop down into the next section, which is bad, or we dump a bunch of white space in the article, also bad. Another idea: does your screen reader read hidden text? Here it is with nowiki (so it's not hidden) <!--test1-->, and here it is without the nowiki: . Did you hear the test2? If not, are there any non-printing characters that you hear, such as html span tags? Well, I'm out of ideas. I know that some of the wikiprojects have images in their articles on the same line as headings (that is, the image link is directly above the heading), and they don't read (many of) the style guidelines. If you come up with a solution that works for you, please let me know. Not sure what makes companies notable, but I don’t think its only size, if they sell or do anything that might be special or unusual, or have had media coverage for something it might be possible. I have created article which are distinctly un-noticeable and only get like 5 hits a month... but in my experience, if your article is of good quality based on at least two or three secondary sources (not the company website), admins can't be bothered to start arguing about notability (I guess this follows the principle that the article might be unnoticeable, but does no harm).... and this can obviously not be found in any Wikipedi policy :-) --SasiSasi (talk) 15:49, 25 September 2008 (UTC)

Screen readers and languages

Hello Graham,

I ran into this edit a while ago and found it very unusual; indeed none of the articles I know used any kind of markup to indicate languages. When I contacted the user who did this (see User_talk:GJR) and asked for reasons, he responded that such markup is necessary, because without it, anyone using a screen reader ends up with incorrect pronunciation and a problem with shortened links (see that talk page for details). I was wondering if you could comment on this, since you're using a screen reader yourself, and you're way more knowledgeable about Wikipedia than I am. I'm perfectly open to the idea of adding the appropriate markup, its just puzzling that I've never seen it used anywhere. Maybe there's a better solution than adding those tags? Also, I'm not an expert on MoS and Wikipedia guidelines in general; I did find this template, along with the rationale - Template:Lang/doc#Rationale - but apparently noone is using it? So, basically, my question is whether this is a necessary thing, simply overlooked by most people, or something that can be solved otherwise (and hence the "overlooked" aspect).
