Hello, welcome to Wikipedia (incredibly belated, I'll grant you).

But don't feel you have to read every policy document before you do anything. Dive in, be bold in editing, and if you do anything wrong, someone will be quick to correct it and let you know (hopefully, politely!)

Help counter systemic bias by creating new articles on important women.

You may have already noticed that you can sign your name using three tildes, like this: ~~~. If you use four, you can add a datestamp too, as I've done below. This is mostly useful, and is considered good wikiquette, on talk pages. But be aware that the actual wikipedia articles should never be signed - they belong to the community, rather than the individual who created them.

GIS & Mapping software[edit]

Yeah the scene is a bit overwhelming (mainly due to the fact that all this stuff is aimed at people who do it as a day job, so a lot of jargon creeps in). I will do a bullet point on how I created the Galloway map (which was easier than the Scottish map).

For high resolution the SRTM data is what is required, as it gives 30m per pixel. The data can be garnered from http://seamless.usgs.gov/Website/Seamless/ through a hellish interactive java map. Ultimately the applet just outputs a query url to the database which is all I now use to get data. The url is of the form:

The co-ords are contained in the url, with the order being North lat, South lat, East long, West long. Just change them to your area of interest and then paste it into the browser. (The co-ords above give the Orkney Islands)

That will bring up a summary page, and there may be more than one dataset to download. Click on “modify data request" and change the format to "GeoTif" and save changes. Then just click to download, a popup will appear and mess about for a bit before finally you will be prompted to download.

  • One you have the data then you need a bit of software to both view the data and to convert it's projection shape. 3dem fits the bill nicely. Just run it and load a terrain model (if using the Orkney example above then it will be a geotiff, so select that and point it to the tiff file) - and hey presto! Due to the way the radar heights were taken (from the equator) it is all a bit skewed, so you need to change the projection from lat/long to UTM. Operation -> change projection will give you the required result. You can then change the colour palette, zoom in, 3d flyby, export to image etc etc from within the prog (the help files are good, as is its website).


From there it is a case of experimenting about. fGIS is a fully fledged piece of software that you can import the rectified geotiff into and start overlaying coastlines, rivers etc. Unfortunately it is no longer available to the public, but a google search for "fgis_setup.exe" should throw up the older free version. The Scotland map is more complicated due to the fact that I had to take 4 data tiles (nw, ne, sw, se) rectify them all, import into fGIS and stich them all together, then use the low res data to get the Shetlands (as the SRTM data doesn't go above 60 deg N) and stitch it in as well. Basically working at more local levels is easier than national levels as you can get what you want within one data tile and then don't have to worry about matching things up.

If you have any questions don't hesitate to ask, as I said, a lot of this stuff is heaped in jargon and minor detail which can cause a lot of problems (for example with the Scotland map I was getting the two westerly tiles with a starting longitude of -7.7 west - this meant that they fell inside the UTM zone 29 North projection and meant that they didn't remotely match up with the easterly tiles (which were UTM 30 N) - but if I took the data set from -7.6 west then suddenly the fell within UTM 30N and could stitch with the rest! - Frustrating). Call for consensus on fan site list on Andy Murray page[edit]

Hello Hellinterface,

You've probably noticed my (probably foolhardy) attempt to resolve the edit war on the Andy Murray page regarding fansites. The protagonists do not look about to resolve it among themselves, so I'd appreciate it if you and other regular editors could express your views on this part of the page, so that we can stop the war going forward, or at least block a protagonist who persists in it. Please come to the talk page here

1.Should there be a list of fansites?

2.Should it be ordered

a) alphabetically
b) by site's popularity or quality
c) by some other factor

3. If by popularity/quality how to judge this?

Wikipedia:WikiProject Scotland[edit]

Pre-script: we are currently undergoing peer review, see: Wikipedia:Peer review/Scotland.

I am beginning to think that the Scottish Wikipedians' notice board is not the best vehicle for pushing up the quality of the Scotland article (we ought to try to get it to WP:FA, in order to get into Wikipedia:Version 0.5, or, failing that, Wikipedia:Version 1.0), and the other key Scottish articles. It is becoming increasingly obvious to me that we really ought to start up the long-mooted WikiProject Scotland.

Most of the stuff at the notice board (at least on the bottom half) is actually WikiProject material anyway, and the Talk page is really being used as a WikiProject talk already! The notice board should be just that: for bunging up brief notices and signposts. I am thinking of launching a Wikiproject and correspondingly radically clearing out, and chopping down, the noticeboard (a re-launch if you like). The Scotland Portal concept is fine (but currently mediocre/undynamic content), but in stasis: it needs a good kick up the jacksie.

Following a successful period of consultation WikiProject Scotland has now been launched. As a participant in the Scottish Wikipedians' notice board I wonder if you may be interested in this new endeavour too? If so, please sign-up here. The WikiProject will be replacing some of the functions of the notice board, especially those in the lower half.
While I am here, please also have a look at the new Wikipedia:WikiProject Deletion sorting/Scotland and give it a "Watch". It was started up by User:Visviva a few days ago, after long being mooted at the notice board, and effectively replaces all the AfD listings at the notice board. Being a transclusion of all the on-going discussions it is a much more useful tool.
Even if you do not want to spend too much time on the WikiProject, please give it a "Watch" and feel free to contribute to Talk page discussions: the more contributors the merrier.

Hey, u wouldnt believe that, but i created account just because of u. Im a big a fan of Lord Goldenthal. My friend and i are working on a discussion board which'll be dedicated to him. Its great to find u. I've got almost all of his works. I wanna ask u, do u have any Goldenthal staff, rare staff? Photos, interviews, videos or orchestral score sheets or just sheet music. I've got Alien3 Complete Score, u know im playing piano and after analysing this score, i found out that there were a lot of music which wasnt heared in the film and wasnt recorded on the final session. Wonder, how did i get it? A friend of a friend, friend of a friend,friend of a friend, knew guy who was copyist on Alien3 sessions. And he copied those original handwriting score by Elliot. U know its something. I have some resources in Warner Bros. Corporate library and once asked him to analyse for me interview with the vampire score, he did it...but didnt completed it. So, tell me more about urself and ur passion of his music.
