Barnstar[edit]

Unfortunately, we can't quote Amazon.com reviews since I think Amazon holds copyright to the submissions made by its users, so I deleted the review of Macaulay Culkin's novel. Feel free to write a neutral summary yourself if you've read it, or summarize the content of a professional review.

However, I looked at your other contributions; I think you're doing a great job so far and you deserve some recognition for that. You may be familiar with the practice of giving out "barnstars" as awards; I decided to give you one. It's on your user page, but you can move it to this talk page (or delete it) if you don't like it there. See you around! --Grace 00:02, 20 June 2006 (UTC)

Reverted[edit]

Your recent edits to Thora Birch were reverted. You violated WP:EL and also introduced a copyrighted image without providing the mandatory detailed fair-use rationale. --Yamla 22:13, 19 July 2006 (UTC)

Orphaned fair use image (Image:Pretty in Pink.jpg)[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Pretty in Pink.jpg. I notice the 'image' page currently specifies that the image is unlicensed for use on Wikipedia and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful.

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Quentin X 15:56, 13 October 2006 (UTC)

Fair use rationale for Image:Tea_and_sympathy.jpg[edit]

Nuvola apps important.svg

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:Tea_and_sympathy.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use. Suggestions on how to do so can be found here.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. BigrTex 17:35, 21 June 2007 (UTC)

I have tagged Image:Housekeeping_vs._Dirt.jpg as {{no rationale}}, because it does not provide a fair use rationale. If you believe the image to be acceptable for fair use according to Wikipedia policy, please provide a rationale explaining as much, in accordance with the fair use rationale guideline, on the image description page. Synecdoche, New York[edit]

The changes you made to the infobox in this article resulted in it being deleted. You cannot make changes to the basic structure, such as change "name" to "Name" or "runtime" to "Runtime", because the way it is designed lets Wikipedia understand and responde to built-in commands. I don't understand the technical side of it, I just know you can't alter it. 209.247.22.164 (talk) 14:39, 2 March 2009 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of Jonathan Glatzer[edit]

Ambox warning pn.svg

A tag has been placed on Jonathan Glatzer requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about about a person, organization (band, club, company, etc.) or web content, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the page does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that they userfy the page or have a copy emailed to you. Triwbe (talk) 08:26, 22 May 2009 (UTC)

Proposed deletion of Jonathan Glatzer[edit]

Ambox warning yellow.svg

A proposed deletion template has been added to the article Jonathan Glatzer, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process because of the following concern:

Fails inclusion criteria WP:CREATIVE.

All contributions are appreciated, but this article may not satisfy Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and the deletion notice should explain why (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised because, even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. Ben Steinbauer[edit]

Hi. I almost labeled the documentary as 2009 too, but then I saw the initial 2007 edit included the same info, so I wasn't sure how to determine anything (and the reviews/imdb dont seem to have any productions details that might help confirm things). Just an fyi note :) -- Quiddity (talk) 05:29, 27 May 2009 (UTC)

Proposed deletion of Sean Desmond[edit]

Ambox warning yellow.svg

The article Sean Desmond has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

No sources or references. Is one sentence in length. Does not meet Wikipedias standards for encyclopedic material. Has not been edited (except for tags, categories, etc.) since it was created over 3 years ago.

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{dated prod}} will stop the Proposed Deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. The Speedy Deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and Articles for Deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. PopMusicBuff talk 19:54, 7 August 2009 (UTC)

Better source request for File:Iraandabby.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Iraandabby.jpg. You provided a source, but it is difficult for other users to examine the copyright status of the image because the source is incomplete. Please consider clarifying the exact source so that the copyright status may be checked more easily. It is best to specify the exact Web page where you found the image, rather than only giving the source domain or the URL of the image file itself. Please update the image description with a URL that will be more helpful to other users in determining the copyright status.

Notification: changes to "Mark my edits as minor by default" preference[edit]

Hello there. This is an automated message to tell you about the gradual phasing out of the preference entitled "Mark all edits minor by default", which you currently have (or very recently had) enabled.

On 13 March 2011, this preference was hidden from the user preferences screen as part of efforts to prevent its accidental misuse (consensus discussion). This had the effect of locking users in to their existing preference, which, in your case, was true. To complete the process, your preference will automatically be changed to false in the next few days. This does not require any intervention on your part and you will still be able to manually mark your edits as being 'minor'. The only thing that's changed is that you will no longer have them marked as minor by default.

For established users such as yourself there is a workaround available involving custom JavaScript. If you are familiar with the contents of WP:MINOR, and believe that it is still beneficial to the encyclopedia to have all your edits marked as such by default, then this discussion will give you the details you need to continue with this functionality indefinitely. If you have any problems, feel free to drop me a note.

Thank you for your understanding and happy editing :) Editing on behalf of User:Jarry1250, LivingBot (talk) 17:22, 14 March 2011 (UTC)

ArbCom elections are now open![edit]

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. ArbCom Elections 2016: Voting now open![edit]

Scale of justice 2.svgHello, Hl. Voting in the 2016 Arbitration Committee elections is open from Monday, 00:00, 21 November through Sunday, 23:59, 4 December to all unblocked users who have registered an account before Wednesday, 00:00, 28 October 2016 and have made at least 150 mainspace edits before Sunday, 00:00, 1 November 2016.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

Survey Invite[edit]

I'm working on a study of political motivations and how they effect editing. I'd like to ask you to take a survey. The survey should take 5 minutes. Your survey responses will be kept private. Our project is documented at https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Research:Wikipedia_%2B_Politics.

Survey Link: http://uchicago.co1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_80J3UDCpLnKyWTH?Q_DL=1R1zIzg92FHco4d_80J3UDCpLnKyWTH_MLRP_2mMtAbQhto4DwX3&Q_CHL=gl

I am asking you to participate in this study because you are a frequent editor of pages on Wikipedia that are of political interest. We would like to learn about your experiences in dealing with editors of different political orientations.

Sincere thanks for your help! Porteclefs (talk) 22:20, 22 June 2017 (UTC)

Musiktheater[edit]

Thank you for copy-editing! When I translated Musiktheater to Musical Theatre, people thought of Musical, which we call Musical even in German, but not a general term for theatre with music (opera, operatta, ballet, ...). Help? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:31, 14 September 2017 (UTC)

Yes; it's the word "theatre" that is the real problem, since this means something quite specific in English. How about "A Century in Classical Music"? — Hugh 22:20, 14 September 2017 (UTC)
Missing the stage aspect, - plain Classical music sound more like concert hall and church. I'd estimate 80&% of his work - and of the book - were around theatre. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 22:32, 14 September 2017 (UTC)
Musiktheater - and nothing in English ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 22:34, 14 September 2017 (UTC)
Oh I see. In that case please change it back to what it was originally, "Music Theatre". Thanks! — Hugh 22:36, 14 September 2017 (UTC)
Thanks for the added ref and content! - Another minor thing: "breathing technique" sounds so technical, while the singer wrote VERY emotionally, and rather meant some feeling for the other's breathing, - well, English is not my language, perhaps you'll find something. I need sleep ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 22:40, 14 September 2017 (UTC)

Bob Dylan on YouTube[edit]

Hi Hl, Thanks for your edits on Bob Dylan. I think the WP:EL you have added as Bob Dylan's channel on YouTube doesn't work. Is this what you meant: [1]? Best wishes, Mick gold (talk) 09:38, 12 December 2017 (UTC)

@Mick gold: Thanks, I've fixed the template. — Hugh (talk) 21:27, 12 December 2017 (UTC)

Latin grammar[edit]

Hi; thanks for your edit on the Musca article. I presume it should also be (Latin for "the bee") later in the same paragraph? I don't know Latin so thought I'd check with you first. — Hugh (talk) 19:41, 21 December 2017 (UTC)

Because Latin has no definite article, it can be proper to translate nouns by themselves or with "the"; it depends on the circumstances. In the context of names of constellations, I think "the" is called for. Thanks for pointing that out. --Piledhigheranddeeper (talk) 21:10, 21 December 2017 (UTC)

What to do about the Auckland Museum page[edit]

I posted my reply to the noticeboard: basically, I think the best course is to let them have their edit, and then find a way for a team of non-conflicted Wikipedians to do a thorough rewrite of the article, supplying all the print references they might need, and also perhaps pizza. Let me know if I can help. If you wanted to host an edit-a-thon I'd be happy to run it. Giantflightlessbirds (talk) 06:20, 5 February 2018 (UTC)

Thanks Mike; I'll be in touch. :) — Hugh (talk) 20:30, 6 February 2018 (UTC)

Non-free rationale for File:Auckland-Museum-logo-Nov-2017.png[edit]

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:Auckland-Museum-logo-Nov-2017.png. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under non-free content criteria, but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia is acceptable. Please go to the file description page, and edit it to include a non-free rationale.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified the non-free rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described in section F6 of the criteria for speedy deletion. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. -- Marchjuly (talk) 01:44, 8 February 2018 (UTC)

Hi Hl. Each use of non-free content on Wikipedia is required to be provided with a valid separate specific non-free use rationale per non-free content use criteria #10c of Wikipedia's non-free content use policy. What you've provided has the makings of a rationale, but you should try to provide more information to allow proper verification of the logos copyright status. You can use Template:Non-free use rationale logo if you want, or you can write your own rationale providing equivalent information.
Before you write a rationale, however, you should be also aware of non-free content use criteria #9. This basically states that non-free content is only permitted in the article namespace; so, please do not add any non-free files to article talk pages, user pages, drafts, etc. Once your proposed changes have been improved, the non-free file can be added to the article. If by chance it's deleted while you're waiting for your changes to be approved, there's no need to re-upload the file. Files which are deleted are not gone forever, but rather they are only hidden from public view. A deleted file can easily be restored through WP:REFUND or by disussing things with the deleting administrator as needed once the file's licensing/usage issues have been resolved. -- Marchjuly (talk) 01:54, 8 February 2018 (UTC)

Wikipedia:Today's featured article/March 4, 2018[edit]

That's some really good copyediting ... feel free to join in discussions at WT:TFA any time ... but it's over the character limit for TFA. I'll do some pruning. - Dank (push to talk) 23:37, 28 February 2018 (UTC)

Thank you, and thanks for the heads-up about the character limit. I see that's mentioned in the header at WP:TFA, but to be honest I don't think it's clear enough; do you think it would be possible to adjust the layout of that section of that page to have a "Style" subheading (or similar)? Perhaps I'll just have a crack at it. — Hugh (talk) 23:42, 28 February 2018 (UTC)
I've never been excited about the verbiage there; feel free to change it. - Dank (push to talk) 23:47, 28 February 2018 (UTC)
Thanks for the edits at WP:TFA. I made some changes; does that work for you? - Dank (push to talk) 02:03, 1 March 2018 (UTC)
Hi Dank. I think you’ve compressed things far too much. My pathway to doing the copyediting that sparked this discussion was WP:TFA > Monthly listings > Found an article that piqued my interest > Started copyediting. I think having the “style guide” for TFAs (if you will) only on WP:TFAR is a mistake: I would never visit that page if I didn’t have an article to propose, and even then I probably would only skim read the guidelines. Headings are crucial, especially somewhere like a WP Project page, which have traditionally been notoriously difficult to navigate and read. If I were you I would think about reintroducing some of the headings to make the page more friendly to new- and intermediate-level users. Thanks. — Hugh (talk) 04:59, 1 March 2018 (UTC)

Uh-oh. Just got up, I see you've been editing TFA pages, and I just looked at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/March 13, 2018. Apart from possibly "at between", my understanding of MOS, FAC, Main Page, and TFA style is that none of the edits on that page was an improvement. When someone makes an edit or two that doesn't work, it's easy to talk about it or revert. With so many changes, I might be accused of being heavy-handed if I revert wholesale, or even if I go through all of them here on your talk page, so ... have another look and consider reverting some of those, or we could discuss a few of them to get us started, or if you prefer, we can go through them one by one at WT:TFA. - Dank (push to talk) 12:38, 1 March 2018 (UTC)

Because of the March 4 deadline for one of these, we need to get moving on this. My suggestion is at WT:TFA#Last night's TFA edits. - Dank (push to talk) 15:17, 1 March 2018 (UTC)

File:50YearArgument US-poster.jpg[edit]

Hi, I'm RonBot, a script that checks new non-free file uploads. I have found that the subject image that you recently uploaded was more than 5% in excess of the Non-free content guideline size of 100,000 pixels. I have tagged the image for a standard reduction, which (for jpg/gif/png/svg files) normally happens within a day. Please check the reduced image, and make sure that the image is not excessively corrupted. Other files will be added to Category:Wikipedia non-free file size reduction requests for manual processing. There is a full seven-day period before the original oversized image will be hidden; during that time you might want to consider editing the original image yourself (perhaps an initial crop to allow a smaller reduction or none at all). A formula for calculation the desired size can be found at WP:Image resolution, along with instructions on how to tag the image in the rare cases that it requires an oversized image (typically about 0.2% of non-free uploads are tagged as necessarily oversized). Please contact the bot owner if you have any questions, or you can ask them at Wikipedia talk:Non-free content. RonBot (talk) 17:21, 14 August 2018 (UTC)
