Information icon Hello, I'm Brianhe. I wanted to let you know that one or more external links you added to New England Conservatory of Music have been removed because they seemed to be inappropriate for an encyclopedia. If you think I made a mistake, or if you have any questions, you can leave me a message on my talk page, or take a look at our guidelines about links. Thank you. - Brianhe (talk) 15:11, 9 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding the link to ianhowell.net added here, you seemed to assert on my talk that this is the conservatory's site not your own? Most unusual. Could you please explain? - Brianhe (talk) 16:26, 9 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Brian, it is my URL, but I am the faculty member in charge of that program. If you think that linking to the internal NEC page that then subsequently links to the external site follows better wikipedia behavior, that's great. I'm happy to change that link to: http://necmusic.edu/vocal-pedagogy. This is my faculty page.

Using internal links for the Conservatory would both appear more neutral and avoid future problems if other editors see the link and have the same reaction I did. Thank you. However, there is another issue here: we almost always avoid inline External Links per WP:ELPOINTS, but this also falls afoul of a number of guidelines including WP:ELMINOFFICIAL, WP:NOTDIR, WP:PRIMARY. There's probably no need for the link in the article at all.
One final thing, don't take this wrong, but I'm going to send a template below describing our policies and guidelines for contributors who are connected to a subject. It's the same boilerplate for everyone, so some of it will apply to you and some won't. But I see nobody has done this yet, so you ought to be made aware. There are many traps and potential conflict-of-interest pitfalls. - Brianhe (talk) 18:38, 9 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
ah, gotcha. I'll add the program back in with no links, if that's alright?Ianhowell (talk) 18:40, 9 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I saw the change you made and it looks fine content-wise. I might go through and smooth some formatting (we don't usually use ampersands in the article text for instance). - Brianhe (talk) 18:43, 9 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Great, thx for your help on this :-)

Guidelines you should know about

[edit]

Information icon Hello, Ianhowell. We welcome your contributions, but if you have an external relationship with the people, places, or things you have written about in the article New England Conservatory of Music, you may have a conflict of interest (COI). Editors with a COI may be unduly influenced by their connection to the topic, and it is important when editing Wikipedia articles that such connections be completely transparent. See the conflict of interest guideline and FAQ for organizations for more information. In particular, we ask that you please:

  • avoid editing or creating articles related to you and your family, friends, school, company, club, or organization, as well as any competing companies' projects or products;
  • instead, you are encouraged to propose changes on the Talk pages of affected article(s) (see the {{request edit}} template);
  • when discussing affected articles, disclose your COI (see WP:DISCLOSE);
  • avoid linking to the Wikipedia article or to the website of your organization in other articles (see WP:SPAM);
  • exercise great caution so that you do not violate Wikipedia's content policies.

In addition, you must disclose your employer, client, and affiliation with respect to any contribution for which you receive, or expect to receive, compensation (see WP:PAID).

Please take a few moments to read and review Wikipedia's policies regarding conflicts of interest, especially those pertaining to neutral point of view, sourcing and autobiographies. Thank you. - Brianhe (talk) 18:44, 9 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
