Welcome to Wikipedia!

Dear TheIslander,

Welcome to Wikipedia, a free and open-content encyclopedia. I hope you enjoy contributing. To help get you settled in, I thought you might find the following pages useful:

If you are stuck, and looking for help, please come to the New contributors' help page, where experienced Wikipedians can answer any queries you have! Or, you can just type {{helpme}} on your user page, and someone will show up shortly to answer your questions.

If you are unsure of how to do something, you are welcome to ask a more experienced user such as an administrator. One last bit of advice: please sign any discussion comment with two hyphens followed by four tildes --~~~~. The software that runs Wikipedia will automatically convert this into a signature which contains your username and the date and time you posted the message, so other users don't get confused.

I'm sorry you feel my twice removing the logo qualifies as "persistent reversion". It seems to me like you find the use of the term offensive because your edit was made entirely in good faith; don't take it personally! It's just part of the jargon some editors tend to use here on Wikipedia, and it often occurs that editors misunderstand that the St. John Ambulance article doesn't just refer to the England/Wales organisation. By the way, thanks for rooting out a better version of the Welsh logo by the way, the tiny gif was the best I could find. --Kwekubo 00:21, 16 July 2007 (UTC)

Welcome to VandalProof!

Thank you for your interest in VandalProof, TheIslander! You have now been added to the list of authorized users, so if you haven't already, simply download and install VandalProof from our main page. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me or any other moderator, or you can post a message on the discussion page. 22:52, 24 July 2007 (UTC)

Help me if you can?

A certain user has made a fake article, albeit a semi-beleivable one, on numerous pages listed below. I don't know what to do to warn them of vandalism, but I did revert the edits, at least for the second article. Could you please deal with the user? i'm asking you because you seem to know how to do this sort of thing, and posted a previous warning on their page.

CITV website

I have only changed it to www.citv.co.uk, as you said because itv.com/citv currently does not redirect to the site. Once this is sorted out, I will revert my edits.
GMctalk 01:20, 04 August 2007 (UTC)

itv.com/citv is the advertised address by CITV, therefore this is the address that should be in the article.
GMctalk 21:28, 08 August 2007 (UTC)
CITV do not advertise citv.co.uk as their address.

Dragons' Den image

I've indicated this as the rationale for the image use. Hope this help.

The CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Corporation) created this image as part of the Press kit for the show Dragons' Den.

Thanks for adding the rationale template. Now I know what to expect in the various fields, I will have a better chance to get it right next time. (smile) Many thanks. – Kempton "Ideas are the currency of the future." - a quote by Kevin Roberts 05:44, 7 August 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for that! It's yet another sock of User: Nam3witha3init. I've indefinitely blocked them now. Thanks again :) - Alison 21:35, 6 August 2007 (UTC)

Red Dwarf page and your comments to anonymous user

" Please assume good faith when dealing with other editors, which you did not on Red Dwarf (TV series). Your comment about 'hacking' is a clear attack against those of us who are trying to keep the article in good shape. A consensus has been reached on the talk page, and it has thus been decided that the expletives section should be cut down. Please do not continue replacing it. Thank you. TheIslander 11:55, 9 August 2007 (UTC)"

How about you don't assume "hacking" is a personal attack? A consensus has not been reached on the subject - your interest in supporting efforts to keep an article in good shape is appreciated, but please don't stray into aggressive "policing" - thankyou. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 81.157.212.8 (talk) 16:14, 10 August 2007
What else could hacking mean? And I'm affraid, whether you like it or not, a consensus was reached. TheIslander 20:12, 10 August 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for changing the description for my link, it sounds much better that way. Nssnss 20:27, 11 August 2007 (UTC)

No problem, glad to help ;) TheIslander 21:57, 11 August 2007 (UTC)

Sorry!

Hey. You just left a message on my IP's talk page about ratings of BBC articles. I did not realize I was not logged in!  Tiddly Tom  17:21, 12 August 2007 (UTC)

Hehe, OK, fair enough. Sorry for the confusion ;) TheIslander 17:24, 12 August 2007 (UTC)
No problem :) Where can I find a list of unassessed articles. I have tried a number of places, but many of the articles there have already been assessed.  Tiddly Tom  17:29, 12 August 2007 (UTC)
Well, the big list in the assessment centre should be updated roughly every 24 hours (automatically), and it'll tell you those articles that are unassessed (at bottom of list). However, I'm afraid I've had a very empty day, and I've just snapped through the whole lot, and I'm fairly sure that there are none left that haven't been assessed. Sorry :(. What can be done, however, is that there are still a number of BBC related articles out there that haven't even had a box added, let alone tagged, so searching those out is useful. TheIslander 17:32, 12 August 2007 (UTC)

WikiProject ratings

This made me laugh. Cold Feet was on ITV. Nevermind, mistakes happen! Brad 08:25, 14 August 2007 (UTC)

WikiProject BBC

Hey, as you sceem to be one of the more active members of the project, I thought I would come and talk to you about it before going to the project. If you read This article from BBC NEWS you will see they announce that they will be making (what looks to me) to be a new channel. Do you think it should have it's own article now, as when it is out, you will want as much information about it available on wikipedia as possible. (When something new comes out, I often look for the article on wikipeida about it ;) ) Thanks.  Tiddly Tom  20:11, 14 August 2007 (UTC)

Well, it seems to me that the article discusses two things. The on-demand stuff is BBC iPlayer, which already has an article. The older-teen version of CBBC has been on the cards since CBBC was re-structured, and 11-16 year-olds cut out. Though it'll undoubtably need an article when more's known, unfortunatly I think it'll currently fail WP:Notability, as barely anything's known right now. Give it a month or two, though, and that might change - what with CBBC re-branding again on September 3 2007, it would seem to me to be the opportune moment for the BBC to introduce something new. TheIslander 21:15, 14 August 2007 (UTC)

Dinosapien

Excellent work on the Dinosapien page! :-) Cls14 12:38, 15 August 2007 (UTC)

Hehe, it was nothing, I only added an infobox. Thanks for the praise, though, much appreciated ;). I plan to have a jab at expanding it further sometime, if time permits. TheIslander 12:42, 15 August 2007 (UTC)

Help

Could you do me a favor and take a look at the edit war going on at Gary Peters (Michigan politician). It doesn't really seem to be a POV dispute, but really a conservative political group publicizing its campaign.209.254.46.34 21:04, 15 August 2007 (UTC)

Right now it doesn't look too bad, but I'll keep an eye on it, and take appropriate action if anything else happens ;) TheIslander 21:09, 15 August 2007 (UTC)

I agree, it isn't horrible now, but earlier this user had added poll data from conservative blogs and was uploading all kinds of information from those biased sites. Is there any wikipedia policy re: referencing sites that are themselves biased?209.254.46.34 21:11, 15 August 2007 (UTC)

WP:SOAP would be the main policy to follow here, closely followed by WP:NPOV. WP:RS would certainly come into play as well - take a look at those, and you'll know what's acceptable and what's not. If it is replaced, revert it (though be aware of the three revert rule). If it continues, or if the article seriously starts to fail WP:SOAP, get in touch, and I'll se about getting the page either protected or (much more likely) deleted, for failing WP:N. Cheers, TheIslander 21:22, 15 August 2007 (UTC)

Felix Faure

You reverted my changes for no obvious purpose. I made my contribution in good faith, to moderate an unproven historical point and add some insights as are widely known and taught locally (in France). I have no intention to enter in a controversy, so do as you please. If you take a couple of seconds to reread my contrib, I'm sure you'd notice was balanced and add historical quotations previously missing.. 82.124.41.29 22:38, 15 August 2007 (UTC).

You're quite right - I'm so sorry :(. I saw the phrase 'oral sex', but assumed it to be the article in it's present state, so reverted it in the hope of getting it back to your version. An honest mistake - I'm very sorry. TheIslander 22:54, 15 August 2007 (UTC)

Cbbc on Choice

please don't delete cbbc on choice i made that page my self —Preceding unsigned comment added by Gladboy (talkcontribs)

I'm well aware that you did, but it's an article that's not needed - the info is already available elsewhere, it is not notable in itself. Please do not remove AfD templates; they are needed so that the discussion can go ahead. Please also be aware that your constant uploading of copyrighed images is against a number of different Wikipedia rules, and you will be banned for it. TheIslander 13:19, 16 August 2007 (UTC)
As a new editor, they're probably immensely proud of their new page and won't know what's wrong with it. Take it gently as they won't know the rules & stuff - Alison 13:34, 16 August 2007 (UTC)
  • Islander - got your message & I've just had a word - Alison 13:18, 16 August 2007 (UTC)
Ok - he's stopped now & has posted an apology to you on my talk page. It looks like he's a new editor and is in need of a bit of help and guidance. It's bedtime for me here, so could you maybe give him a few minutes and nudge him in the right direction? - Alison 13:32, 16 August 2007 (UTC)
Of course, not a problem. Thanks for your help, Alison, and enjoy your 4 hours (only 4 hours!?!) sleep ;) TheIslander 13:38, 16 August 2007 (UTC)

Hi Islander i'm very sorry for the edits as alisons says i am new and just a bit of a nudge i also made the moment of truth gameshow page why don't you have a look a tell me what you think. 14.44,16 august 2007 (UTC)

Not a problem ;). To quote my response on Alison's page:
Appology accepted ;). Your edits certainly seem to be in good faith; there are just a few rules that you need to be aware of, particularly WP:NFC (with regards to images), and WP:N (with regards to your new article). I'm certainly happy to help, just ask anytime on my talk page ;)
Moment of Truth looks like a good start, though there are a couple of things you should be aware of: Firstly, notability. It looks like it's a notable show, but you should try and find some reliable sources to back you up. Secondly, the picture: it is a copyright violation, I'm afraid. You might want to try adding a copyright plate, and a fair use rationale. Other than that, good start ;). TheIslander 13:53, 16 August 2007 (UTC)

Copyright

how do you get a copywright for the pictures —Preceding unsigned comment added by Gladboy (talkcontribs)

Well, if you took the pictures, it's easy - just release them to the public. Take a look at the Wikimedia Commons.
However, I have a feeling you're talking about screencaps, as they're what you've been uploading. They're much more tricky, and for them you must follow a lot more rules. For starters, you need to obtain them from legal sources, which would basically be a screencap of the show itself. Sources like Youtube are, 99.99% of the time, not legal. You'll have to carefully read WP:NFC, and follow the instructions it gives. The two most important things you need to include are a copyright plate (see dropdown box at bottom of upload area, and a rationale, which must include source, claim for fair use, and a couple of other bits and pieces. Take a look at the links I've given - they'll help you out ;) TheIslander 20:13, 16 August 2007 (UTC)

Neutral Point of View?

I don't understand how I am violating this policy ... I read the guidelines AFTER I posted the first time and that was my mistake. But after reading it, I still don't understand how I am violating a policy by posting an album review. Can you explain this to me please. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Jrjourney (talkcontribs) 22:42, 17 August 2007

I certainly can, though I'm afraid that you've already been blocked, as despite my warnings and final warning, you continued to submit, breaching policies including the three revert rule. As I stated, take a look at WP:NPOV - a review contains opinion, and opinions are not what Wikipedia is about. TheIslander 21:46, 17 August 2007 (UTC)
I've given Jrjourney a second chance. If you would like to monitor this (as you indicated you might), that would be much appreciated. Mr.Z-mantalk¢ 00:45, 18 August 2007 (UTC)
Thanks for that; I'll certainly keep an eye open. TheIslander 00:54, 18 August 2007 (UTC)

DLR

Hi i work for serco dlr thats how i know about the VO many thanks —Preceding unsigned comment added by Danielthesaint (talkcontribs) 18:48, 18 August 2007

It'd still be nice if you could provide a reliable source for this - signage on the rolling stock still use PSA. TheIslander 18:24, 18 August 2007 (UTC)

you know what a traffic notice is? it tells us whats happing in the week and it does not say PSA it says VO rolling stock still use PSA...may i ask do you work or know anybody who works at DLR? also at the end doors of the train it says NOTE TO VEHICLE OPERATOR —Preceding unsigned comment added by Danielthesaint (talkcontribs) 20:21, 18 August 2007

Please sign your comments by typing ~~~~, which Wikipedia converts to a signature and timestamp. Nope, I don't work for the DLR, Serco or even TfL (though I'd really love a go at pressing buttons under that so-tempting looking pannel at the front... =P ). I am, however, an infrequent passenger on the DLR, and, as it happens, used it last week. It seems that, as far as the public are concerned, it's still PSA for the moment - see here, specifically "The Passenger Service Agent can drive trains in a manual mode with all the protection of Automatic Train Protection. If the Passenger Service Agent attempts to over speed or depart when a route has not been set, the train will automatically apply the emergency brakes preventing further movement.". Also, as I mentioned, signage still uses PSA. As for the "note at the end doors of the train", I assume you mean on the platform? If so, I suspect that that's just an internal phrase, but that you're still a PSA to us. If you can find an online, publically available source, preferably from TfL, DLR or Serco themselves, that confirm that they are indeed now refered to as VO's, then I see no problem with it staying as such. If, as I suspect, however, it's just a new internal phrase, then it's not really best for Wikipedia. Thanks, TheIslander 19:34, 18 August 2007 (UTC)

Danielthesaint 19:42, 18 August 2007 (UTC) i know how the train works i operate them and the end doors are on the train where you the public seat thinking its a bloody rollercoaster next time you seat at the EDP (where we somtimes drive the train) you can read it...

Gah, don't be so grumpy - it's great fun, 'tis like the underground, but you can see out the front! The only reason you don't find it amazing is 'cause it's what you do every day :P. Do you mean the sign that says something like "Please be prepared to give up this seat if the PSA [VO] needs to operate the train from the front", or something like that? If so, then I'll admit defeat, as that'll be proof enough for me. (quick tip - 'tis usual to sign your post at the end). TheIslander 19:44, 18 August 2007 (UTC)
