MT Maps

Hey, nice work with the metro Tucson maps. The previous maps I developed on my own, using data from the U.S. Census. The unincorporated areas are Census Designated Places (CDPs). If I remember correctly, I searched the U.S. Census site and eventually found them. I don't know how helpful that is, but let me know if you have any other questions. Good luck! Maricopa Maps

I managed to find something similar for Pinal County, but am having a hard time finding other such data for the other counties in Arizona. I am not sure how it works for other states, but I myself am going to start looking on the U.S. Census Website for similar cartographic data.

Unofficial maps project

I really like what you have done/are doing with your maps of locations in Arizona. Realizing how much of a chore it can be (the previous incarnation of the city boundary maps in Maricopa County were my creations) I decided to take a little initiative in helping you out.

I have uploaded map files and redone the infoboxes for pretty much all of the cities and places listed for Yavapai County, trying to keep the maps pretty much to the same standards in terms of colors and linestyles that you set with previous maps. I have yet to categorize them all on the Commons, however, I plan to do that shortly.

I do not know how 'active' you are with this project, but I'm happy to continue helping with the remaining counties. Let me know if you're working on anything currently so I don't duplicate your work unecessarily.

Just as a little update. I got a bit overzealous and did up a bunch of maps for La Paz without checking and realizing you'd already uploaded them! I also have the maps for Mohave County finished (they are on my computer at home and can't upload them until later), as well as much of the work done on Navajo and Apache counties. I didn't see anything uploaded for those. I did notice that in your version for La Paz (as well as it looks like most aside from Maricopa) you're drawing in the outlines for the CDP's as well. For consistency's sake I will do the same with the newer maps, though I'll leave Yavapai and Coconino as-is until I can get around to fixing them later so they all are consistent.

I am wondering if you planned to extend this project in to other states as well? Arizona is definitely a good start due to the small number of counties, although if you were to branch out into other states this could turn in to a long project :) Anyway, excellent work on the maps, keep it up! Thank you! I still have to credit you with the original idea as well as the formatting for the maps, I just ran with the idea :) There is still a little bit of cleaning up to do, particularly a few small unincorporated (non CDP) towns that could at least use "red dot" maps, but I held off on them because the articles themselves were in rotten shape - see Greer, Arizona for an example. As far as continuing on with other states or at least other cities, I plan to cool down a little bit before picking another direction. I am thinking I might consider moving in to neighboring western states like Nevada or New Mexico, as I'm assuming they should be fairly similar in scope, large counties with lots of open space. As you had mentioned with some potential future examples, such as New York City, individual county maps would be a little inappropriate, not to mention an exhausting project. I did like your idea of possibly branching out to hit some of the other major metropolitan areas - some old raster versions exist for major California cities, some in Florida and perhaps elsewhere, but upgrading to SVG maps is a definite good idea. Perhaps it would be possible to check around for other users who have worked on those and similar maps and see if a more broadened method of attack is called for, perhaps even an official project? • • After a bit of a break and some consideration on the topic, I've come to the conclusion that the most logical extension of the "project" is to target major metropolitan areas first, and leave it up to interested parties if they wish to do the same for whatever particular county. As something of an experiment I've whipped up maps for several counties in the Detroit metro area, as I used to live there, and it provides a special challenge - Michigan has multiple layers of government that adds the whole "civil township" and incorporated village setup, so you get overlapping areas. I've uploaded maps for Wayne county and modified the corresponding articles. I also put up a notice on Wikiproject Michigan to see if others approve of the maps. If the response is positive, I will continue with other counties in that area, and if I still have the stamina slowly work my way out to other cities, but without additional help I imagine it'll be a slow, eventual process. Hello again. I have a fairly important update as far as the mapping project goes. First of all, I checked with the WikiProject Cities folks to see about their opinion on the project and got in touch with a couple of other editors who have been working on maps, and trying to convince them that SVG is the way to go :) More importantly though, I got a little tired of drawing these maps individually and brushed off some old scripting skills. I now have a script that will draw the boundary files for counties, municipalities and CDP areas automatically based on Census data. It still requires user intervention, as the maps are drawn state by state (rather huge maps) and I have to manually seperate out the county I want to work on, but it's a huge timesaver. I'm also working on another script to automatically generate highlighted maps but that's not done yet. Arkyan • ^(talk) 20:22, 1 May 2007 (UTC)

New maps

By all means, feel free to upload new maps of the ones that I originally did. Nice job on picking up on the updated maps from MAG, too.

My project is going great, I have a fully functioning script that churns out maps based directly on the Census boundary files. Not as up to date as what MAG hands out, but since the vast majority of the city articles out there don't get the kind of love an attention the others get, the decennial Census information is more than adequate. Glendale CA

I see you arranged the pics on the Glendale, California article. No big deal or anything really, but where they overlapping on your computer screen?

Yes, some of the images were overlapping The pano-type camera-phone-looking image was overlapping with some of the images on the side, and the image above the trivia template was slightly overlapping with the template itself. Also, it seemed kind of weird that all of the images were on the right side of the article, pushing some relevant images out of the sections they were intended to be included in.

Another map update

Hey there! My script is now running through California and I've hit Los Angeles County. I see that you have made at least some of the maps for the county, I've not dug around to see if you got them all just yet. Anyway, I wanted to check in with you first to see if you were working on maps for any other California counties so as to avoid duplication. In general I'm proceeding alphabetically - so if you planned on making maps in, say, Texas I'd not run in to those for some time :)

As an aside, if you do get the hankering to tackle another county and would like I can generate you a generic SVG for the municipalities so long as you don't mind using the data from the 2000 census. Obviously if you have more up to date sources those'd be more accurate, but otherwise I'd be willing to give you the outline maps to build upon. Let me know if you'd ever have any use for such.

How to Make County Maps

I've really enjoyed what you've been doing with highlighting the location of incorporated and unincorporated communities in counties, i.e., Los Angeles and Maricopa Counties. I wish to do the same for the 66 counties of South Dakota (several counties, yes, but small and very few communities for the most part haha). I live in Minnehaha County, SD (here's a link to the first map I could find with the towns in it: [1]). However, I don't know how to put it in the format that you have for the counties you've made. In other words, I would like to know how to create the SVG files highlighting the eleven incorporated communities of Minnehaha County. Please help me out with this and tell me if there's a program I need to download. Thanks.

BTW: The City of Sioux Falls is bordered with a purple line (obviously) and the southern boundary runs along the county line between Minnehaha and Lincoln Counties...even though the urban area just to the south of that purple line is still the City of Sioux Falls, so I'll need to know how to include that small segment in the map. You made the map for Long Beach, CA.[3] I was wondering whether you would make a map for Los Cerritos, Long Beach, California. There is a non free map here that shows where the filmed homes are as used in this article. Pinal county maps

Hey there again,

I was looking through some of your maps of Pinal County and noticed a couple things. As far as I can tell, it looks like the areas you've identified as incorporated come from the Pinal County land use map (here) but those areas seem to be identified as "Corridor Mix" rather than "Incorporated". I checked the general plans for Coolidge and Florence and unfortunately they do not show their current municipal boundaries, and Maricopa's GP does not show the boundaries that that map shows. Is there something I missed that says the "Corridor Mix" on that map is the same as "Incorporated", because it'd be great to know these are indeed updated maps of city boundaries.

In any case, both Coolidge and Florence seem to have updated their planning areas to eliminate the overlap. Coolidge's update seems to have eliminated the overlap with Casa Grande as well. You might want to update the maps when you get a chance. Arkyan 21:59, 16 April 2008 (UTC)

Collin County, Texas,

Hey there,

I've been very gradually updating Texas city maps near the style you and Arkyan have been using. I have been going in alphabetical order, and just came upon your maps for Collin County. Did you have any plans to continue making maps for TX? I have been using the US Census TIGER files that just came out for 2007, creating the maps in ArcGIS, and editing with Inkscape. The only difference between your maps and mine is that I haven't colorized the state maps (slows things down too much) (see for example Brownsville, Texas). Just wondering on a plan of attack here.

Map request for Fairfax County, Virginia

If you ever have the time, would it be at all possible for you to make an SVG map of incorporated and unincorporated areas in Fairfax County, Virginia (including the City of Fairfax)? Ixnayonthetimmay, thank you very much for your generosity. Regarding the City of Fairfax, I have no clear answer for you. You are correct that it is an independent city and not a part of Fairfax County. I originally requested its inclusion for the reasons you mentioned — the county seat is there and the map may look strange with a hole in it. Fairfax children also use the Fairfax County Public School system and I suspect that Fairfax County residents don't perceive much of a boundary, although I don't know how Fairfax residents feel. But perhaps a Wikipedia product should be held to a more formal standard than what people "feel" (especially because I can't really speak for anyone but myself). Maybe it would be fair to give the city a different shading to indicate that while it is a separate entity, the county seat is there? Or perhaps just create two versions — one with a hole and one without — and let the Wikipedia community choose the best one through consensus-building debate. Hey there, I wanted to give you an update on how things were progressing with the new script. Due to the time of year I am encountering a lot of interruptions but progress is still being made. Because of the way the script works (as well as certain limitations of machine processing) there will be a certain amount of manual post-processing to get them up to speed. There are actually two scripts. One generates the raw county map, and another one creates individual location maps based on the county map. The manual processing is an intermediate step, and mostly consists of manually placing the state inset map in a logical place and making it a logical size, something I cannot get my script to do. What I am thinking I will do is set up the scripts on my web server and provide you access to it. You would be able to generate a county map and download it, make the manual adjustments necessary, upload the adjusted map and generate subsequent place maps. If I'm feeling ambitious enough I should be able to code it to automatically upload the final generated maps to Commons, but we'll see.

The data I have access to is more robust than that which I used for the initial batch of maps, and we have the ability to add additional elements to the map - if we want. Of particular interst at the hydrographic features; another discussion initiated on my talk page dealt with the apparent visual discrepancies created by the fact that the old data did not take in to account accurate shorelines. One downside however is the way the data is set up - instead of a nice, solid shoreline, you end up with the coast in path segments that have to either be joined or cut out of the existing landform to display "correctly". This would mean some additional manual processing is required unless I can figure out how to get it coded in; I have not had any success with that thus far.

Another piece of information that we may want to include are indian reservations, as the data include these as well. Their addition is fairly trivial, it's merely a matter of deciding if we want them and, if so, do we want to display them in another color or not. I am seeking your input on the matter. Finally, I do have access to highways, which I think would be useful to provide geographic context, but they are proving highly problematic - while the data does correctly identify Interstate highways, it fails to distinguish between US Routes, state routes, and local arterial roads that would clutter up most maps.

I'm hoping to have the script up and running by the end of the month but again, I can't make any promises due to the demands of the holiday season. I'll let you know when there is further progress. Shereth 16:29, 11 December 2009 (UTC)

Here's another update for you.

It turns out I was somewhat mistaken about the roads/highways thing and there is some distinction that is useful. I have attached here a generated map of Maricopa county showing what are designated as "primary" and "secondary" roads. I am pleased to see it catches all of the state and US highways, although it does seem to pick up on a few former routes as well as a few roads that I'm not sure why it has included. You'll also note that the data supplied for roadways appears to be a little behind.

In this particular case, it would not be too hard to manually clean it up (remove unecessary segments, perhaps add a few updates) but I am slightly concerned about the vast majority of counties, I don't know about you but personally I have limited knowledge of the highway system outside of a few select areas and would not really feel comfortable making an objective decision about what stays and what goes.

I also considered showing the boundaries for parks, but I do not have data for them and also would worry a little about clutter. Indian reservations seem to make sense to me, and coastlines are pretty much a must. The more we add the more cluttered it looks, but there's no harm in producing some sample maps to compare with as well. Here is a list of the various types of geographies I have data for and can add to the maps :

• Native American areas (reservations)
• Congressional districts
• Consolidated cities
• Minor civil divisions
• Oregon urban growth areas
• School districts
• State legislative districts
• Voting districts
• Census designated (blocks, tracts, etc)
• Metropolitan/micropolitan areas
• New England city and town areas
• Urban areas (2000)
• ZIP codes
• Road and rail
• County subdivisions
• Hydrographic features (lakes, rivers, canals etc)
• Landmarks (airports, cemetaries, summits, etc)
• Military installations

There's probably a few I left off but there's a lot available there, so you can see how easy it would be to overcrowd the maps. I had considered showing rivers/lakes but that proved to be problematic due to the fact that a lot of very minor features were being displayed - small streams, ponds, and the like. Anyway, my current line of thinking is to include the reservations, include the shorelines, and possibly roadways. I'd appreciate your input on the matter. Shereth 15:11, 23 December 2009 (UTC)

City county maps

Those maps are very poor quality. I'm being honest; they look amateurish unlike the quality svg maps. They also do little to inform people on a global scale at least for the infobox which should be clear and of high quality. I think they are way too localised. What I'd recommend is that your county maps are moved down to the geography/administrative section of articles which discuss the city limits. I'm not the only one who has long thought the main maps for US places way too localised. I see it as a cleanup job. If you would prefer that I don't remove the county maps but are happy for me to add the state pin in addition I will do this from now on. I have no major objections as long as we also ensure that each article has a quality state pin locator. But I think it would be silly to revert everything as I believe these pin maps greatly help the article. In a way the county maps can also, but as I say I don't think the quality is that good, but if you really insist we must keep them I am happy for them to coexist with the pin locators.

I am happy to compromise like Fort Hunt, Virginia as I think both maps are useful. I would prefer it though if you used different colors to make your maps to make them look smarter. ‡ Himalayan ‡ ^ΨMonastery 22:03, 9 March 2010 (UTC)

Yep, I agree somewhat. One map showing the county locator as city shape territory and another a pin map simply showing where in the state it is. Above all my main concern is the quality of the county maps. I actually think it would be better if you didn't show the blank lines of the other divisions but created a colored map of the county with state locator in the background just shading in the city division in a different color. Perhaps we could arrange a trial and error graphic scheme with Shereth to come up with the best graphic for making the county locator maps. I try to see things globally. Imagine a Japanese wikipedian came across the Fort Hunt, Virginia article as it was. The File:Fairfax County Virginia Incorporated and Unincorporated alone would seem too localised and have the person scratching their head to work out where in the United States it actually it, let alone Virginia. But if we could polish them up to coexist with a state pin making it simple to understand to the average reader I'd be very happy to do this.. These articles, I understand need a tremendous amount of work, many of them have been neglected since Rambot. I am glad at least that you and Shereth are systematically working on maps at least. I genuinely hope we can come to an agreement without any unnecessary ill feeling or conflict.. I'll lay off any further pushpin swpapping until we can arrange something as a group. I fully understand what a mind boggling task it is. I've done my fair share of them! So much respect for Shereth and yourself for doing so. My major concern is that for example whilst Jonesboro, Arkansas is a census area and covers a set territory it is also a city which would generally appear on state/national maps as a city dot and marker. So coming across an article about a city just seeing it as a sort of district locator may confuse some people but if it has a pin map locator within the actual state you can look at straight on and think, yup I know exactly where this is... Also the svg pin maps displays features such as rivers which for some places this is vitally important, especially towns which lie on major rivers. My ideal would be a pin map which you can click and be able to zoom in on the census area and see exactly what territory the metropiltan areas occupy within the given county, as some of them are very peculiar shapes which can often not adequtely be displayed by a pin dot. But such is the slow progression of atlas development on here I can't see this happening in the near future. I genuinely think the best think would be to develop a proper wiki atlas scheme where you can click maps and be able to zoom in highlighting given territory. The current wikiatlas in my view is substandard... I don't know perhaps we can find a way to place the census maps in the demographic/geography sections of the articles so no work goes undone. Actually my ideal would be if we could employ the technology used for the map here in the template we could quite reasonably display your county maps, state pin and even national pin options conveniently and neatly housed in one feature. That would be the way forward in my view and would cater for most preferences and requirements. I do think it would be unfair to make decision either way and say nope we are not using the county locators, or nope, we are not using pin locators. In my view both serve the purpose and I believe that adding a clickable feature for the map scale of your choice would be the most beneficial... ‡ Himalayan ‡ ^ΨMonastery 22:14, 10 March 2010 (UTC)

Here's the template parameter link for the mapping: here. Would solve a lot of mapping issues all over if we had this option in infobox settlement. Standard for Dry Water Bodies

Hello all,

I was working on a locator map for the Phoenix, Arizona metropolitan area and want it to conform to these standards. However, I am not able to find an agreed-upon standard for depicting normally dry bodies of water (i.e., dry lakebeds or riverbeds that are sometimes wet, of which there are a lot of such bodies in the desert.)

Any help with this would be appreciated!

The maps are based originally on this PDF file (http://www.mag.maricopa.gov/main/download.asp?item=4554) which is now a dead link. I am fairly certain this information has been transposed to the MAG interactive mapping page (http://ims.azmag.gov/), but the databases are currently offline. Suggestion for WikiProject United States to support WikiProjeck Arizona

It was recently suggested that WikiProject Arizona, to which you are a member, may be inactive or semiactive and it might be beneficial to include it in the list of projects supported by WikiProject United States. After reviewing the project it appears that there haven't been much active discussion on the talk page in some time and the only content updates appear to be simple maintenance so being supported by a larger project might be beneficial. I have begun a discussion on the projects talk page to see how the members of the project feel about this suggestion. Hello again! I totally missed your response on my archived talk page, sorry about that. I was beginning to give up hope that there'd be any interest in redoing these maps at all, it's been all crickets in the maps wikiproject.

If you couldn't tell I was largely basing the new series of maps off of the work you'd done for Maricopa County. Obviously there's some differences; I've left off the reservations for the reasons mentioned, and the planning areas mostly because I don't have access to GIS data for planning areas. It's not something that the Census Bureau seems to care much about. There's a few other issues I run into with the Census data, not least of which are the odd categorization of roads and the pretty funky way they deal with waterways.

As for exactly what I was looking for, well, it was mainly just a little bit of consensus. The last time I tried making batch maps most people were pretty happy with them but a few (very vocal) dissenters left a bad taste in my mouth. I'd like to be able to standardize locator maps if at all possible. I don't know what kind of response to expect, though, given the silence thus far. Also if you're up for assisting with some of the manual labor that'd be muchly appreciated, so working out some of the kinks ahead of time would be great.

2019 US Banknote Contest

There are an estimated 30,000 different varieties of United States banknotes, yet only a fraction of these are represented on Wikimedia Commons in the form of 2D scans. Additionally, Colonial America, the Confederate States, the Republic of Texas, multiple states and territories, communities, and private companies have issued banknotes that are in the public domain today but are absent from Commons. In the months of November and December, WikiProject Numismatics will be running a cross-wiki upload-a-thon, the 2019 US Banknote Contest. The goal of the contest is to increase the number of US banknote images available to content creators on all Wikimedia projects. Participants will claim points for uploading and importing 2D scans of US banknotes, and at the end of the contest all will receive awards. Whether you want to claim the Gold Wiki or you just want to have fun, all are invited to participate.
