HTML bug in disambig tool

Hi, Jason. In your Disambiguation Pages with Links tool, your program is not converting ampersands in page titles into HTML & entities. For example, for the disambig page A&M, your report generates the following line (copied from the latest report):

<tr><td> 2673. <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A%26M">A&M</a></td> <td align="right"> <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:WhatLinksHere&target=A%26M&namespace=0">68 links</a></td></tr>

Source code

I haven't released the source. It's working, but it's messy and would be hard to understand. I want to fix the code up before releasing - so I won't have answer for my sloppy code. Help making tool to count number of pages which "link here"

Hi JaGa! I recently asked for help at the Village Pump for getting the number of pages that link to a given page (Wikipedia:Village_pump_(technical)#Counting_the_number_of_articles_that_"link_here"). Folks there suggested that your Toolserver program as a good starting point. I've looked at your utility and it seems quite appropriate, do you think that you could help me adapt it for my needs? Specifically, I would like an online utility that would count the number of links to any specified page. Well, as I mentioned above, I haven't released my code yet. Do you have a Toolserver account? All my stuff is PHP that runs against the toolserver's replicated Wikipedia database; you have to get access to that for my stuff to be of any value. I've dug into it, and there's a query that used to take seconds now hanging indefinitely. I don't see anything wrong with the database or the other queries, so maybe it's something with the data itself. I've been hammering away at this; the data looks fine, the code looks fine, but a complicated query that once took seconds now takes at least half a day. Monthly disambig list

So, I did a test run to make sure my new script is working correctly, and I got this: User:R'n'B/Wikipedia:Disambiguation pages with links/October 2009. It lists the top 500 pages from your tool as of October 14, but with the link counts as of October 15 (so there are a few stray cats and dogs near the bottom of the list). [Incidentally, in case you are interested, I am now keeping all the daily link counts in a user database on the Toolserver.] Is this how you think I should generate the monthly list, apart from the day of the month of course? Also, what would you do if (heaven forbid) the Toolserver was down on the last day of the month? I've assumed that you would use the top 500 from the last day for which data is available, but maybe that's not right? --R'n'B (call me Russ) 21:42, 15 October 2009 (UTC)

Yeah, the script just grabs the top 500 from the table that's created when the daily disambig update runs, so it'd just get the latest available. I could run the dab update just before I make the monthly list, but then we'd get those oddballs I was talking about earlier.
You could use the link counts from October 14 as well, just so the list wouldn't look weird. That way, instead of everyone asking "Why is this article with only 4 links in the list???", they'd just discover the occasional dab that had already been finished, which is already quite common.
I didn't know you had a Toolserver account! Those aren't easy to come by. I'm amazed with the things you've been doing with the data - none of it ever occurred to me! Checking TDD is a highlight of lunch for me these days, and it's fantastic to be able to chart our progress. I look forward to 100-DPL and up Zero Day. --JaGa^talk 21:59, 15 October 2009 (UTC)

Hi! Thanks for the offer. I would expect the article Maltese nobility to be about the history of nobility, different titles, etc. (for instance, see French nobility or German nobility), and then the information about individuals to be split into other list articles (such as all the articles in Category:Lists of French nobility). As it stands, the article is much, much too long. And all the different tables makes the table of contents downright intimidating. I'd start with removing content into sub-articles and go from there. It would also be good to split some of the long text sections into sub-sections to improve readability (see Wikipedia:Layout and Wikipedia:Headings). The article is not about Nobility in general but about the Maltese Nobility, what it is made of, the different titles, how they were created, amended and succeeded, the laws etc. A consensus was reached in 2006 to merge all the articles on Maltese Nobility because some people thought them too repetitive, so it is a tough call to shorten the article. We cannot compare Maltese nobility to French nobility or German nobility, or Italian Nobility because of the conclusions of the British-appointed Royal Commission. Unlike other European nobilities, all locally-created Maltese titles and successions, and foreign registrations are recorded and copies of those grants and relative documentation are easily available from the National Library of Malta. The references are noted down individually in the article and all this raw data is also backed up by reliable third-party publications.

Some of that published raw data was not picked up by the Commission. To complicate matters further, while the Royal Commission allowed some fiefs and unregistered foreign titles to form part of the Maltese Nobility on the basis of a direct recognition, it disallowed some recognised foreign titles and it even overlooked some locally-created titles! To make matters worse, a later committee made some retroactive changes and now the Republican government has not abolished the nobility but only "withdrawn recognition", meaning that the titles are still alive. There are different rules for fiefs and titles, and most of the titles have their own peculiar history and the grants were never streamlined into a uniform mode of succession. Added to this is that the foreign titles remained subject to the laws of the sending country. In terms of the Grand Masters' legislation, even some of the cadet male lines were considered to be forming part of the nobility. All these issues are highlighted objectively but to do so requires some explanation. Special attention was made to state facts and documented I will try split the long text sections into sub-sections, but will that not make the table of contents even longer? Long is OK for a TOC; having a TOC that stretches across the page is not OK. Table names should not be the titles of sections. And the tables should be put into proper wiki tables (Help:Table), if they must be kept. But you should think about cutting down the size of the article, if you aren't allowed to move content out; it's just a matter of time until someone decides to revert your work to a cleaner-looking version, such as this one. --JaGa^talk 17:15, 29 October 2009 (UTC)

DAB Challenge list

So, I see that Babyface is on my list, but not on yours. Babyface (disambiguation) was on the October 31 list, but later the page was moved to the primary title. I guess it fell off your list when it changed from being a disambig to being a redirect; however, if the redirect is to another disambig page, it really should stay on. Disambiguation Pages With Links

Hi JaGa!

If I want to work on disambiguation pages with a number links below those on the top 500 list, I can scroll through the "Disambiguation Pages With Links" report to find them. However, this is time-consuming and inefficient.

So is there any way for you to add a search box where the number of links can be searched for? Or a range of numbers? For example, if I want to see a list of all disamb pages with 45 links, I could enter "45" to display the list.

I would like to do this because I find it far more satisfying to work on pages that are NOT on the monthly top-500 list. I have a better chance of working on pages covering subjects that I actually know something about!

Heads up regarding your Orphaned images tool on the toolserver

Hi,

Noticed that a lot of images are showing up on the result that are in fact used via an image redirect, take File:Cyclone Larry damage in Edmonton 3.jpg for example your tool reported it as orphanded, but if you look at it's link page, you'll see that it's used via it's redirect File:115802075 71c36b15ed o.jpg. These unfortunately don't show up as direct "file links", so you probably need to look for "image links" under the general links table (sorry not quite sure how the database layout works) instead to get a true list of unused images. --Sherool (talk) 17:51, 21 November 2009 (UTC)

Deletion Issue

Dear JaGa, I would like to suggest that when you're nominating files for deletion you provide objective reasons based on clearly listed Wikipedia policy documentation, as opposed to clearly subjective value judgements, (such as "Worthless image. Makes me wish there was a speedy for "obvious junk"" as per the comment you gave when nominating this file). Whilst the example I gave was of a unencyclopedic image, the fact is that its almost irrelevant whether or not it was as comments like that not only betray an underlying bias on your behalf, but undermines the necessity for images like that to be deleted in the first place. Your judgement is neither infallible nor inscrutable, unlike and in contrast to actual objective Wikipedia policy guidelines. What you think of an image is absolutely meaningless in terms of file deletion, and I am sure that if you are consistently failing to provide real reasons for deletion, you will eventually make a error based on your taste that will result in something of value being deleted.--P.Marlow (talk) 19:56, 6 December 2009 (UTC)

I have my doubts about the legality of the supposedly free image on commons [1] - it looks like a scan from a book or magazine, yet the uploader claims it as his own work. The band has split up which means getting new/free photographs of them will be impossible. Still, I'm not supposed to replace the image that's currently on WP with the "free" one from commons. I agree completely - there's no way that's a free image. The thing to do is to bring the image into Wikipedia with a fair use rationale, but we should be able to describe the source of the image. I'm going to poke around and see if I can find it. --JaGa^talk 11:48, 11 December 2009 (UTC)

Response to Orphaned images tags

Hi JaGa,

You placed the following tags on my talk page regarding several images that seem to be orphaned and are to be deleted, I guess;

Orphaned non-free image File:Show Introduction.jpg
Orphaned non-free image File:SegmentCredits.jpg

These images are included in article that had been deleted at an AfD and was placed into my user space (userfied by admin) to keep working on. The article in question is at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Turqoise127/Kresimir_Chris_Kunej I was under the impression that such userfications allowed for images to remain in article. I just took a look at your tool, expecting to see just the code, but it actually has an interface. If you want, I can just go through that myself, instead of you tagging them and them me deleting them. That also clogs up CSD, if I wasn't deleting them right away. Heya! Yeah, there's a problem on the Toolserver, where all my reports run. They've done an "upgrade", and for some reason now several of the database tables my reports depend on have been deleted. I've started a support request at the Toolserver to try to understand what's happened and if recovery is possible. bogus speedy deletion notices

You placed four notices of proposed speedy deletion on my talk page for images that, so far as I can see, have nothing at all to do with me, and which appear not to have been, in fact, proposed for speedy deletion. The notices were placed on your page because you'd created EN wiki pages for these Commons images by adding the images to EN wiki categories. The images are orphaned, so I was getting the pages you created speedy deleted. --JaGa^talk 01:58, 15 December 2009 (UTC)

Confusing talk page message

In consideration of users who are less experienced and knowledgeable than I, can you please try to be more careful with your use of talk page templages? This message is entirely confusing, as following the link takes me to a completely normal image page for an image hosted on commons, with no obvious deletion notices or even a history of notices. I'm clueful enough to navigate to Special:Log and see that there must have been a dead image page there on EnWP, but other people are not so experienced and would probably be left concerned that there was an impending deletion of some media they contributed. In cases where there is just a useless dead image page on enwp for an image on commons there is probably no reason to notify the uploader, but at a minimum any such notification should be clear and not just a vague boilerplate. It is only possible if you import the script manually, rather than using it as a gadget. But it is generally a good thing to leave, the exception being mass nominations of pages created be the same person. MrKIA11 (talk) 19:09, 15 December 2009 (UTC)

Help!

Hi JaGa,

I have been using the new option to enter number of links on the disambiguation list, and it has been working great! I came across the page "Central High School", which lists numerous high schools with the same name. The standard long list of identical names for different locations.

User:Stallions2010 recently changed "Central High School (Keller, Texas)" to "Central High School (Fort Worth, Texas)". This change included a REDIRECT. His summary basically says that the school is located in Fort Worth, not Keller, and that it "just makes sense" to make the change. Well, I did some research and found that Keller is a suburb of Fort Worth, but it is also a separate city with its own school district. The school's website [2] specifically says it is in Keller, and so does its listing on the Keller School District website [3].

My problem is that his change has created a new page for a school that does not exist (the Fort Worth one). I want to remove the REDIRECT, delete the Fort Worth school's page, and restore the Keller school's page. His contributions page lists the entire process he went through.

I honestly don't know what the procedure is for this. I have never done a Revert or Undo where there was a REDIRECT involved. The Undo option seems a little too simple in this case, and I don't want to mess things up. I looked in the Help section for directions, but it's very difficult to find stuff in there.

Can you either do the changes so that I can see how to do it, or refer me to the correct procedure so I can do it myself?

After the changes are done, I'll edit the "Central High School" page to show the proper listing in Keller. I will also add a note that it is a suburb of Fort Worth. Hopefully that will make things accurate.

Heya, happy new year! Sorry I didn't get to this sooner - I've been on a nice long holiday break. I'm going to request the Central High School (Keller, Texas) redirect be deleted so I can move the Fort Worth one back into the proper place. The move would convert the Fort Worth article into a redirect to Keller, but that is probably a good thing since there's obviously confusion about its location. New ToolServer report

I've a suggestion for a new ToolServer report: Most viewed disambiguation pages, modeled on http://stats.grok.se/ (except I'm just after an aggregate number, not a pretty graph) -- I'd love to know what pages were attracting the most traffic, as that implies that the incoming links have a greater need to be stomped than the dab page with the most incoming links. From reading the data model, page.page_counter ought to be sampled periodically (daily for example) and recorded; the difference between samples is the number of page views in that time period. Your current reports run daily against all dab pages, don't they? And toolserver gives you your own private database to store stuff in, so in the same cron job as the regenerating the disambig report, grab the page_counter values for each dab page from the replicated database and store them in your private database. Josh, I have some ideas how to do this, on an episodic basis. However, if you examine page view stats before and after all incoming links are fixed, you will see that in many cases the page view stats do not change much. Ergo, the page views are from Wikipedia's search box, or linking in from outside Wikipedia. Looks like I got credit on the scoreboard for making Intel a redirect to Intel Corporation instead of to Intel (disambiguation). Is that new? I can't say for certain, but I expect the leaderboard to properly count fixes once this is cleared up. Some of the tables and procedures in my Toolserver schema have been deleted, and it depends on what's gone. The fact that the leaderboard still exists is encouraging. I'm really sorry about this, but it turns out I was wrong. The tables that account for the state of disambigs as of Jan 1 have been deleted (I have no idea why and the Toolserver people aren't being very helpful), making it impossible to update even if other problems are resolved. Uncategorized articles

Quick question: a number of articles that are listed as uncategorized by your toolserver for uncategorized pages are actually in the hidden category Category:Redirects to Wiktionary. Is there a way to exclude those? The category isn't directly applied to articles, but is transcluded by the {{wi}} template — perhaps add that template as something that the toolserver should skip? No worries. Looks like it worked; I didn't comprehensively go through the entire list or anything, but one of the first bunches of items on the list used to be a set of Wiktionary redirects from word suffixes (-est, -ing, that kind of thing) and they're all gone. DAB challenge

Hi JaGa, I just wanted to point out the current leaderboard. There seems to be some problem, its stopped updating sometime yesterday and now its all wrong. the top positions have changed as well and the number of edits, it went from edits in 1000s to barely 100s by the top leaders. Needs to be run periodically, and sortable; basic effect is to supply pages that are suspiciously large. An enhancement would be to run it through a bot that pulls the actual page down and strips comments out before calculating these metrics. Josh Parris 10:57, 7 March 2010 (UTC)
