Jim Beam article[edit]

It is possible you may have a conflict of interest in editing this article, so I'm giving you a few tips.

  1. Ensure all your additions are verifiable. You can do this by adding references.
  2. Ensure that the article is easy to read and well layed out.
  3. Remember that wikipedia has a neutral point of view

For more information, you can read up on the Wikipedia Manual of Style Policy.

Stay within wikipedia's guidelines and you can create wonderful articles and avoid having hard-worked edits deleted. Lympathy Talk 16:08, 29 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Username[edit]

You have recently flagged your intention to be adopted by a more experienced user. I am happy to adopt you, however right now your username is a violation of Wikipedia username policy as it violates WP:COI, WP:IU. I realise that you are committed to improving wikipedia and that is valid aim and we appreciate your honesty, however, wikipedians must remain neutral and must edit more than one page to remain neutral.

From here, you have several options. I suggest that you ask to be renamed WP:UNC or create an new account with a more appropriate username.

Once this username has been fixed I will gladly adopt you or if you still have questions I am freely available. Lympathy Talk 15:32, 2 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Blocked[edit]

The account with this username has been blocked indefinitely from editing Wikipedia, because it contains the name of a corporation..
This is often not a reflection on the user, and you are encouraged to choose a new account name which does meet our guidelines and are invited to contribute to Wikipedia under an appropriate username. If you feel this block was made in error, you may quickly and easily appeal it - see below.

Our username policy provides guidance on selecting your username. In brief, usernames should not be offensive, disruptive, promotional, related to a 'real-world' group or organization, or misleading. Also, usernames may not end with the string "bot" unless the account is an approved bot account.

If you have already made edits and wish to keep your existing contributions under a new name you may request a change in username. To do so, please follow these directions:

  1. Add {{unblock-un|your new username here}} below. This is possible because even when you are blocked, you can still edit your own talk page.
  2. At an administrator's discretion, you may be unblocked for 24 hours to file a request.
  3. Please note, you may only request a name that is not already in use. The account is created upon acceptance – do not try to create the new account before making the request for a name change since we can far easier allocate your new name to you, if it is not yet used. Usernames that have already been taken are listed here. For more information, please visit Wikipedia:Changing username.
  4. In the alternative, you can "abandon" the contributions under this username and create a new account, which is much faster and easier.
Last, the automated software systems that prevent vandalism may have been activated, which can cause new account creation to be blocked also. If you have not acted in a deliberately inappropriate manner, please let us know if this happens, and we will deactivate the block as soon as possible. You may also appeal this username block by adding the text {{unblock|your reason here}} below or emailing the administrator who blocked you.

This user's request to be unblocked to request a change in username has been reviewed by an administrator, who declined the request. Other administrators may also review this block, but should not override the decision without a good reason (see the blocking policy). Do not remove this unblock review while you are blocked.

So far, your only edits have been related to your own business. Under the conflict of interest guidelines, we all agree not to edit articles related to our own business, or to edit on behalf of a business, so, if unblocked, you wouldn't be editing articles related to Jim Beam. Of course, if you're interested on helping write the encyclopedia as a private individual in other areas- if you have knowledge and interest that would improve our articles on football, or ska music, or cheese, you're still welcome here. Now that you know you aren't going to be writing about Jim Beam, do you still want an account? What other kinds of edits do you see yourself making in the future? Would you like to choose a username that doesn't imply that you're editing on behalf of a company, one that makes it clear that you're working as a private individual? -FisherQueen (talk · contribs) 16:06, 16 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Your request to be unblocked has been granted for the following reason(s):

Allowing username change to spirits_fan (talk · contribs). Please put this request in at Wikipedia:Changing username as soon as possible to avoid re-blocking.

Dear Administrator, I would like to request my account to be unblocked. I am confident that the edits that have been made, and that I intend to make, to the "Jim Beam" Wikipedia article were done with a neutral point of view and in-line citations/references. In my being transparent about my position with the company, as well as requesting mentorship, I hope to prove to Wikipedia that my only reason for editing was to correct mis-information and to add valuable, factual content where a gap currently exists.

Should you have any questions please let me know. Any advice on how to appropriately handle these and similar edits would be greatly appreciated.

Scott —Preceding unsigned comment added by Jim Beam Employee (talkcontribs) 17:51, 16 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It would help to allay our concerns if you could give us an example of a change you would hope to make, if unblocked. For example, if we have got something wrong in one of the articles about bourbon whiskey, or say, about a particular company that makes bourbon whiskey. What information would you add, and do you have reliable published sources that you could offer us to verify the information you want to add? One of your recent edits seemed a bit promotional and lacked reliable sources to confirm the details of what you were adding. EdJohnston (talk) 18:56, 16 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Also, you claim authorship on some of the images you've uploaded (such as the bottle and the label) when it's clearly not the case. Unless you're the CEO or something, and can release those photos for free use, you shouldn't be uploading them. They're nice pictures, but I don't think they're yours to give away. Simply being employed by a company doesn't mean you are entitled to use their logo however you want; on the other hand, if you've been granted the right to use promotional materials like those in an official capacity, we're back to the conflict of interest. Kafziel Complaint Department 19:14, 16 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I certainly appreciate you taking the time to explain your concerns. The only changes I intended to make were to add the proper license information for the uploaded images, my apologies for not adding that earlier. I hope you can agree that most of the edits that were made to the article had appropriate in-line references and were not promotional in nature. Should there be any others specifically in question I will gladly provide references and/or remove to maintain the credibility of the article. Lastly, I would hope that it is clear that the edits made to the article to this point are done in the spirit of adding value to wikipedia for a topic where there was a noticeable lack of information or interest from the general community. My apologies for not understanding the username guidelines when I initially registered, but in the spirit of transparency I wanted to make my intentions known to my mentor when I was adopted. I can assure you that I spent a good amount of time understanding contributor roles and responsibilities before posting.

With your permission I will change my username to be more appropriate for this community; edit and/or remove images in accordance with the licensing/free-to-share policies; and only make contributions to this topic should it add neutral value without creating a conflict of interest. In addition, I would like to examine other topics both inside and outside of the category to which I may add similar value.

Thanks for your consideration.

Jim Beam Employee (talk) 19:37, 16 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Ok that's good enough for me, I've unblocked. The best way to avoid WP:COI problems is, if you want changes made to an article you have a conflict on, that you merely propose the edit on the talk page. Only make the change yourself if it is clearly uncontroversial (e.g. typos, correcting non-disputed facts). Mangojuicetalk 03:40, 17 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Speedy deletion of Red stag by jim beam[edit]

A tag has been placed on Red stag by jim beam, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G11 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page seems to be unambiguous advertising which only promotes a company, product, group, service or person and would need to be fundamentally rewritten in order to become an encyclopedia article. Please read the guidelines on spam as well as Wikipedia:FAQ/Business for more information.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the page does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that they userfy the page or have a copy emailed to you. - Unforgiven24 Talk|Contribs 18:28, 11 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

May 2009[edit]

Welcome to Wikipedia. It might not have been your intention, but you removed a speedy deletion tag from Red Stag by Jim Beam, a page you have created yourself. If you do not believe the page should be deleted, you can place a {{hangon}} tag on the page, under the existing speedy deletion tag (please do not remove the speedy deletion tag), and make your case on the page's talk page. Administrators will look at your reasoning before deciding what to do with the page. Thank you. Brianga (talk) 18:37, 11 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

FYI conflict of interest guideline[edit]

If you have a close connection to some of the people, places or things you have written about on Wikipedia, you may have a conflict of interest. In keeping with Wikipedia's neutral point of view policy, edits where there is a conflict of interest, or where such a conflict might reasonably be inferred from the tone of the edit and the proximity of the editor to the subject, are strongly discouraged. If you have a conflict of interest, you should avoid or exercise great caution when:

  1. editing or creating articles related to you, your organization, or its competitors, as well as projects and products they are involved with;
  2. participating in deletion discussions about articles related to your organization or its competitors; and
  3. linking to the Wikipedia article or website of your organization in other articles (see Wikipedia:Spam).

Please familiarize yourself with relevant policies and guidelines, especially those pertaining to neutral point of view, verifiability of information, and autobiographies.

For information on how to contribute to Wikipedia when you have conflict of interest, please see our frequently asked questions for organizations. For more details about what, exactly, constitutes a conflict of interest, please see our conflict of interest guidelines. Thank you. — Athaenara 18:40, 11 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
