Teahouse host feedback[edit]

Just wanted to let you know that I have been trying to follow host feedback and give advice as needed, such as here. Granted, that was a relatively small thing to deal with as opposed to editors who are overeager to begin hosting, but I will continue to check up on things. I, Jethrobot drop me a line (note: not a bot!) 02:55, 26 September 2012 (UTC)

That rocks. Thanks, Jethrobot. I 'ppreciate you taking on this role. If you have any questions on how to handle this kind of stuff, feel free to ping me, SarahStierch or Heatherawalls on TP or IRC. Heather and I hang out in #wikipedia-teahouse a lot. Jmorgan (WMF) (talk) 03:25, 26 September 2012 (UTC)
Maybe I'll start hanging out there, too! I, Jethrobot drop me a line (note: not a bot!) 04:59, 26 September 2012 (UTC)

Curious on the relative difficulty level of this[edit]

Hey Jonathan, could you take a look at User talk:Okeyes (WMF)/Archive 5#Popups for readers and offer an opinion on the difficulty of creating whatever switch would be necessary for readers to turn them on and off? As I mentioned there, I think it would involve using cookies, but I know little about the situation, so it's very possible that I'm wrong. Ryan Vesey 16:43, 7 February 2013 (UTC)

This is a good question, and I'm not sure what the answer is. I don't have much experience with front-end scripting. I do think navigation popups for readers would be really cool and interesting. It's kind of a shame that so many useful gadgets are turned off by default, IMHO. Jmorgan (WMF) (talk) 22:47, 11 February 2013 (UTC)
Well, I would say that the hard part isn't the cookies; that's not too hard, really, the Javascript is pretty standard IIRC. The more interesting question in my mind is: where do you build the switch into the UI? Non-registered users don't get a Special:Preferences. You could add a switch to the Toolbox without problems, but how do you advertise it? That's pretty out of the way, and this kind of thing has to be opt-in, I'd say. Writ Keeper 22:57, 11 February 2013 (UTC)
A fairly straightforward solution (from the user perspective) might be to give people the option to enable it as a pop-up the first time they show up. Store their selection locally in a cookie. And make that preference and any other UI preferences we're offering available under a preferences menu that lives in the upper-right, like reg. user preferences (although you could call it something different like "custom viewing options"). Lord knows how you'd make that happen on the back end though, or who you'd have to buddy up to. Jmorgan (WMF) (talk) 23:05, 11 February 2013 (UTC)
Perhaps something similar to the new references thing would be possible. It exists by default, and readers/editors have the option to disable it from the popup itself. Ryan Vesey 21:38, 13 February 2013 (UTC)
That's not bad, but I still think it would be a mistake to have this be on by default for all readers. the references tooltip is one thing; the number of mouseover targets, size of each mouseover target, and size of the popup window are all relatively small, making user frustration with unexpected popups and popups blocking desired content relatively small. For Popups the script, the targets are bigger, there are more of them, and the popups themselves are bigger, making it much more likely for user annoyance to result. It just seems too much like a power-user feature to me to be enabled for everyone by default. Writ Keeper 21:53, 13 February 2013 (UTC)
That's a good point. If it is created at some point, and we left it off by default, could we run a banner informing users of the feature? Per the discussion linked near the bottom of the discussion on Oliver's talk page, it's very possible that many readers would want to use it if it was there. It took me some getting used to, but I love it. On another note, changing the name should be the number 2 priority if creating it ever becomes a thing. Ryan Vesey 21:58, 13 February 2013 (UTC)

Wikipedia:Teahouse/Host/Featured[edit]

Hi, not sure if you're still active, but I would advise removing Wikipedia:Teahouse/Host/Featured/19 from the list, as he is blocked. Best, Matty.007 16:08, 6 January 2014 (UTC)

Hi Matty. Thanks for the heads-up, I'll remove him. In future, you should feel free to move profiles of hosts who are no longer active on wiki to the Host Breakroom, which is a page we use to preserve the profiles of retired hosts (even if they got in trouble elsewhere, they still helped out at TH!). And yes, I am still active in TH under my volunteer account, although mostly I just run HostBot and occasionally give my opinions in talk page conversations :) Cheers, Jmorgan (WMF) (talk) 22:01, 6 January 2014 (UTC)

Is this really one of your pages ? It looks like promotional vandalism by somebody else to me but I am reluctant to suggest it be deleted in case it has some significant purpose. Regards  Velella  Velella Talk   18:57, 10 July 2014 (UTC)

That's bizarre. Thanks for pinging me. No, I didn't make it, and am surprised I didn't notice when it was created. I would definitely appreciate it if you would delete it (I rarely use my sandbox talk pages). Cheers, Jmorgan (WMF) (talk) 19:46, 10 July 2014 (UTC)
