John Ling[edit]

I propose that you go ahead and get the John Ling article removed completely. It is clear that he and his supporters have been quite a nuisance. I can't believe you've allowed this prick to run around for so long with no consequences. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 222.152.218.193 (talkcontribs) .

Cool Cat made a statement on this request for arbitration and I commented on it, mentioning that I wanted to add evidence regarding Cool Cat's continued POV editing, and other violations in articles regarding Kurds, the Armenian Genocide and other related issues. Before I spend time on collecting and preparing the evidence, I would like to know if the ArbCom will actually consider any evidence against Cool Cat during this ArbCom case? I am not sure what the rules are regarding this, and before I make a lot of efforts collecting evidence, I would like to know what the rules are and what the position of the ArbCom is regarding this? Cool Cat is not mentioned as a "involved party" but he did make a statement regarding this case. -- Karl Meier 17:34, 16 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The case has from the very beginning been very much about a conflict between Moby and Cool Cat, and just adding evidence can hardly be considered harassment... But anyway, I shouldn't waste your time with such details. Thanks for taking the time to make a good and useful reply. I appriciate it. -- Karl Meier 18:17, 16 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Changes in policy suggested[edit]

After my experience with the case of Dabljuh, where you made a comment I found helpful, I suggested some changes to the policies and asked to enforce those we already have: [1] [2] Socafan 18:42, 16 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Johnleemk. I was wondering if you could relook your oppostion on the above MFD. Sam Blanning suggested that you relook it. Reason being Sam changed his vote and you stated "conditional delete per Sam Blanning". Thank you! — The King of Kings 04:40, 18 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

User:Bazzajf and the arb case...[edit]

I noticed you placed a note about IrishPunkTom's arb case on Bazzajf (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · nuke contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log)'s talk page. Currently Bazzajf is serving under a week block for personal attacks on another editor. However, if you think it is important enough that he contribute (he has maybe 5 days left on the block) feel free to unblock him or tell me here and I'll unblock him. Thanks! Syrthiss 12:32, 18 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, I'll perhaps make a note of that on his talk page re submitting info by email (if your template message doesn't say that explicitly). Thanks! Syrthiss 14:52, 18 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Trivia[edit]

"For the umpteenth time, NO TRIVIA". I have a problem with this statement. It sounds a bit like a frustrated parent. I always thought that Wiki was based on co-operation. Am I wrong on this?

andreasegde 15:30, 18 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I honestly feel that there is something amiss here...
"blatantly ignore a growing consensus among more experienced editors"
This sounds like a growing upper-class of editors that are controlling things. Does this mean that there is a hierarchy in Wikipedia? Uhhh... I hope not...
We all try to (hopefully) quote from reliable sources, or to tell the truth, which can be proven. No experience needed.
"trivia sections are a sign of poor writing ". If it is written well - albeit about trivial subjects - how can it be badly written?
Last question: (Please read my page to see how I feel about co-operation) but why does trivia seem to bother the "more experienced editors" so much, and make them so "frustrated"? It´s trivia, and it is trivial, after all.
How many times have you read the liner notes of an album/CD to see who thanked who, and who made the tea? I do it all the time (Laugh...)
Have fun. andreasegde 16:11, 18 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

"especially if they agree very strongly about it". Who are they? This suggests a collective, does it not? Do you include yourself in this collection? (I´m not being angry, by the way, so you can smile if you want...)

Wikipedia doesn´t (mostly) use real names, so how do we know who "they" are? Am I missing something here? Have you ever read, "The Lord of the Flies"? Innocence can be perverted (please don´t misconstrue this)...

Have you ever read/heard the phrase, "We are all equal, but some are more equal than others"?

Have fun. andreasegde 16:56, 18 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

If "lists are bad", then does that mean the deletion of album/CD lists? Presidential lists? Who came second in a race? Those are also lists, are they not?

I am the fifth child of six children, so does that mean I must delete myself because I am not the eldest child (who will inherit the estate), but am the fifth in the list? Am I trivial? (I´m laughing... :)) Have fun. andreasegde 17:05, 18 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I´m sorry to have to write this, but I am shocked by your comments. Phrases such as, "We use", "the possibility exists for them to become an integral part", and "where I tend to stir up trouble for fun", are very troubling to me. Sorry, but they are.

The only reason I started writing for Wikipedia was because of its openess, and seemingly good sense of fair play. I now have the distinct feeling that "we" seems to be some kind of hidden club that decides on most things. It´s - scarily - a little like the idea of the "Thought Police". The "concensus" seems to be what "we" think, whoever "we" are. Can we join the concensus? To whom do we apply?

My original perception of Wikipedia as a wonderful way of people working together has now been thoroughly shaken, and stirred. If anything one contributes (factual or proven) is subjected to a higher echelon of one-sided "we don´t think so" criticism, or just outright ignored, then one question comes to mind, which is; why bother in the first place? Why not just write everything yourselves? Maybe that would preferable, laugh... :)

Have fun. andreasegde 22:38, 18 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

What do you think about Crestville´s comment that he and three other editors, who have all been working on WP for a long time, disagree with you about your Trivia opinion? Count me in, by they way, but I´m just a beginner... If Trivia is not allowed on The Beatles page, then why have I seen Trivia sections on other pages, with no warning that it is not allowed? Hmmm...

If there is a concensus, then where is it? Who is it? How can we know what the concensus thinks when we´re not told what it thinks, except by your good self, of course :)

I intend to put a header on The Beatles dicussion page asking for anyone who contributes to decide if there should be a Trivia section. If enough people sign, would that be worthy of being the concensus? Probably not...

This is the problem with WP; a lot of people waste an awful lot of time discussing one little section; as we are doing. Is it really that important?

I suggest putting "NO TRIVIA" on the Wikipedia main page. Is that possible? It would save us both of lot of time (laugh...)

andreasegde 11:34, 19 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, by the way, this is on your front page: "If your appetite is not sated, you may also enjoy the Heavengames forums or Malaysia Today, where I tend to stir up trouble for fun."

andreasegde 11:44, 19 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I have just spotted this on the Marilyn Monroe page:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marilyn_Monroe#Trivia

Why was that not deleted if it failed to comply with the concensus? Nobody complained about it on the discussion page. Good grief... I´m going grey...

Afd for Ben_Burch[edit]

Even though you've already closed the AfD for Ben_Burch, I added info to the AfD page to indicate questions about a couple of the editors voting in support of keeping the article. In short, it appears there was sockpuppetry involved in the voting. Even though I don't normally edit an AfD after it is closed I believe the record needed to indicate that several of the editors were likely sockpuppets. Best, --Alabamaboy 16:26, 21 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Wow! Didn't know that would kick off such a stink (see this link). Anyway, I've instead added the notices to the talk pages of The White Rose Society (website) and Ben Burch. I do find it interesting that so many sockpuppets and mass swarms of anonymous editors are involved in anything to do with these articles. --Alabamaboy 19:17, 21 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

RuneScape holiday items[edit]

Although I'm an admin, I don't tend to deal with AFDs much, but considering Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Runescape Holiday Items, isn't RuneScape holiday items simply a recreation? It looks mightly odd, especially given that the first version is quite long and created less than two weeks after deletion. -- Ricky81682 (talk) 19:55, 25 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Beatles News
Project News
  • New article classification system, for our use and for Wikipedia 1.0. Very important and we need editor involvement. How can you help? Rate articles! It's easy:
    • Visit Wikipedia:WikiProject The Beatles/Article Classification and read about how to grade.
    • Visit Category:Unassessed Beatles articles and select an article to review.
    • After deciding what grade it should have, modify the invocation of {{WPBeatles}} on the talk page to add parms. The template itself gives you the parameters to use. For example, change {{WPBeatles}} to {{WPBeatles|B|Low}} if you think it's a low-importance, B-class article. Save your changes and make sure the talk page is now showing the ratings.
    • Click on the link in the template to edit the /comments subpage and explain why you rated the article the way you did. Don't forget to sign with ~~~~. Save that too.
    • Questions? Ask Kingboyk or Lar for help.
  • Want to stay up on new project developments? Watchlist all of the WikiProject pages plus The Beatles and each of the 4 members, to get a feel for what's happening. Also monitor and regularly review Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team/The Beatles articles by quality log. If an article is listed on there as "added", go check the article's history. If it's new since the Project began add it to the Project Log as a new article and up the counter by one :)

Issue of the Month

Preparing articles for inclusion in Wikipedia 1.0.

From the Editors

It was a bit of a struggle to get this month's newsletter done, as we did it without a lead editor. Hopefully, next month you'll jump in and be our lead editor. Big news is that WP:1.0 is coming along nicely and our article classification system has changed to conform to it.

If you've just joined, add your name to the Participants section of Wikipedia:WikiProject The Beatles. You'll get a mention in the next issue of the Newsletter and get it delivered as desired. Also, please include your own promotions and awards in future issues. Don't be shy!

Lastly, this is your newsletter and you can be involved in the creation of the next issue (Issue 004 – August 2006). Any and all contributions are welcome. Simply let yourself be known to any of the undersigned, or just start editing!

Back in '04 you nominated this for FA. It's presently in the FARC section of WP:FAR. I'm doing my best to contact nominators, just to cover all our bases. You noted at the time "I've contributed only a couple of paragraphs worth of prose to it", so perhaps you can't fix it--now you know anyhow. Cheers, Marskell 17:04, 4 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Where have you gone?[edit]

John, have you "disappeared" without telling us? If not, please come back ASAP - you were one of two regularly-active Arbitration clerks, aside from Tony Sidaway. I don't want Tony to become over-burdened by your absence. 23:26, 15 July 2006 (UTC)

Since you're an anon, I'll reply here. I am currently on an extended Wikibreak because I think Wikipedia has become a fucked up place to work in, and I have no desire to voluntarily contribute to a project which depresses me. Issue 004 – August 2006

Issue of the Month

Despite it being the lead news article of last month, there is still help required in the assessing of articles and the migrating of comments. Lar is willing to provide assistance to those unsure how to do this.

Beatles News
  • The Beatles in the news. Suggestions: [5] [6]
Project News
  • The Beatles article, the "Flagship" of the Project, is currently under review with regard to its Featured Article status. It is hoped that the review will identify those areas that need some(/lots of) remedial work, and that the Project participants and those editors who are involved in the the FA admin pages to can work together to "save" the status of the article.
    • At the moment there is some discussion as to why it has been listed, and what may be needed to help it retain its FA status. It may well be that some work is going to be required in formulating a plan of action, and then some more in achieving those aims.
    • The FA status is obviously quite important to the Project, and it would be appreciated if participants are able to provide assistance in keeping the article up to standard. The editors would be grateful if those persons receiving this Newsletter could spare some of their time, energy and brainpower in keeping this jewel in our crown in its proper place. Please go to Wikipedia:Featured article review/The Beatles and get involved! Thank you.

same. Syrthiss 19:43, 10 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not 100% sure what I'm being asked about, but I took a look at Image:Hisham Keris.jpeg. "I believe this qualifies as a fair use photograph where the issue of "Malay rights" is dealt with." isn't really the "detailed" fair use rationale that we're looking for, but, then again, a lot of that is already contained in {{HistoricPhoto}}. I see that it is being used in Portal space, which we're technically not supposed to do (although this "policy" is rarely enforced there). The most significant problem is that we don't seem to know who the copyright holder is. In terms of its use in Ketuanan Melayu, there could be a stronger argument that this image is necessary to understand the concept. If I were to take a guess as to why someone questioned its meeting Wikipedia:Fair use it would be that they were concerned about the lack of copyright holder information or that it wasn't absolutely obvious that it is a historically significant image.

Much the same could be said for Image:Protest against Malayan Union.jpg and Image:Gerakan celebrate after 1969 election.jpg. Image:Bumi discount mod.jpg is different; our use of this is very transformative, which is good from the legal standpont, but it isn't crystal-clear that the same information couldn't be conveyed by text, and the image seems to be larger than we need it to be, while at the same time being low-resolution enough that it is hard to make out the important details. Anyway, I'd focus on getting the copyright holder information sorted out, and then making it more clear that these photographs are in and of themselves significant. I'll note that we regularly let much more dubious Wikipedia:Fair use claims through WP:FAC. Jkelly 22:04, 10 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

If you don't want to break out subarticles, then please just leave it intact; it would be better to have an overly long article than one that's lacking info. Everyking 03:27, 11 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • Unfortunately, the Featured Article badge on The Beatles was revoked. The article was immediately nominated for Good Article status, which it received later that same day. Project member Kingboyk said of the nomination, "I'm quite happy about it really, as I feel that GA is about where we're at and gives some incentive to work on the article."
  • We have a new category for Beatles articles needing attention. If you're looking for something to work on, the articles in this category and the subcategories need some TLC. To put an article in this category, tag its talk page with {{WPBeatles|attention=yes}}.
  • Kingboyk has given {{WPBeatles}} another major overhaul, and has assessed all of the Beatles articles. He would be grateful if other editors would leave comments on the state of articles, needed improvements and so on, by clicking the Comments link in the template. I considered a general archive but felt it best to move the other stuff away so to try and make it clear it's not desired especially as some of it might be a bit offensive to some people. Just thought it wise to do a cleanup before it's featured and people come and see what's been said and respond Nil Einne 01:56, 2 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Great job on this article, btw!

Recent edit to Economy of Malaysia[edit]

Hello. Thank you for your recent edit to Economy of Malaysia. Your edit included one or more links to the page Doctor, which is a disambiguation page. This type of page is intended to direct users to more specific topics. Ordinarily we try to avoid creating links to disambiguation pages, since it is preferable to link directly to the specific topic relevant to the context. You can help Wikipedia by revising the links you added to Economy of Malaysia to refer directly to the most relevant topic. Image:Cokebottles.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Cokebottles.jpg. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the image description page and edit it to add {{Replaceable fair use disputed}}
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use image by finding a freely licensed image of its subject or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that any fair use images which are replaceable by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. --– Quadell (talk) (random) 20:46, 7 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

U.S. Congress questions[edit]

Hi. I responded to a couple of questions you had posted on talkpages regarding questions about U.S. Congress articles. I hope the information is helpful, and I added some of it to the articles themselves, so your questions were doubly useful. I contribute to some of those articles so let me know if there's anything else you're wondering about. Regards, Newyorkbrad 17:35, 9 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

WikiProject The Beatles Newsletter, Issue 7, November 2006[edit]

WikiProject The Beatles Newsletter
Issue 007 – November 2006

Issue of the Month

Again, the issue of the month is inline citations. A Day in the Life, A Hard Day's Night (song), and Get Back have all been defeatured, as they failed to satisfy criterion 1(c) of What is a featured article?, and other song FAs are due for the chopping block. Inline citations are an important aspect of articles—they ensure verifiability and reliability, and they remove original research. Additionally, they give readers the option to read the original source material and view it within context.

Basically:

  1. All direct quotations attributed to Beatles members pooled from interviews need full inline citations.
  2. All critical comments about songs or albums need full inline citations to notable music critics, magazines opinions, or reviews, as opposed to being merely comments by Wikipedians.
  3. Inline citations need: author name, article name, publication date, and name of publication. Such info is still preferable even if quoting from an interview posted upon a website; when this is the case, place the URL link at the end of the citation with the date it was last accessed. (This will help editors retrieve the page using the Wayback Machine, should the link go dead in the future.)
Beatles News
  • The Beatles are due to release a soundtrack album, LOVE, at the end of November, as a companion to their Cirque du Soleil adaptation of the same name. It will feature remastered and remixed versions of their previously released songs, including some new medleys.
  • Paul's getting a divorce. Pain, arguing, and fighting abound.
Project News
  • The Wings tours are really nicely documented now (see Category:Wings tours), but Category:The Beatles tours is almost empty. Kingboyk and the rest of us would love to see (and read) articles on each Beatles tour, including the pre-fame tours of the UK—and the Hamburg trips, of course!
  • The hottest Project page this month has been Paul McCartney, involved in the Featured Article drive, as mentioned above.
Member News
  • Our project members are too modest to report any awards they may have given or received.
From the Editors

Wherever possible, editors should help to trim down on list-like prose within Beatles articles. They should convert list-like sections into fluent, cohesive prose which ties an article's sections together. Lists make articles disjointed, awkward, and difficult to read.

Be sure to take part in the Featured Article drive, and don't forget those inline citations!

Stating factual things are not wrong in any manner. The username is not slur only the person notice it is slur in his thinking. Like the PM said berani kerana benar. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by pukiumno (talkcontribs) .

WikiProject The Beatles Newsletter Issue 8, December 2006[edit]

WikiProject The Beatles Newsletter
Issue 008 – December 2006

Issue of the Month

Wikipedia's standards are improving all the time, with the result that many articles in The Beatles Wikiproject are being nominated for review of their FA and GA status - and many are losing that accolade. It is difficult, with such a large number of articles and the ease with which editors may make changes which are detrimental, to maintain the standard of articles, let alone improve them. As ever, members efforts are both appreciated and needed to keep the Project on course.

Beatles News
  • A Beatles compilation called "Love", featuring tracks remastered by George Martin (with his son Giles), has been released and has made number 1 in Canada.
  • The impending divorce between Paul McCartney and the former Heather Mills continues to make the pages in the tabloid press in the UK.
Project News
  • The hottest Project page this month has been Paul McCartney (see above and below).
Member News
From the Editors

If one is to be mercenary about the subject, it should be noted that Paul McCartney is going to be more noteworthy than usual in the near future as his divorce case comes to court. In that case it is great to note that a small group of Project Members (plus another individual who does not feel compelled to register himself despite important contributions) have worked very hard, and in an atmosphere of good humour, to take the McCartney piece to a succesful Good Article nomination. Perhaps this is the method to use for future articles, a small dedicated team concentrating on one subject at a time. Of course, all members are invited to join any existing group or even go about forming their own. Please note any such action in the Project Log.

If you've just joined, add your name to the Participants section of Wikipedia:WikiProject The Beatles. You'll get a mention in the next issue of the Newsletter and get it delivered as desired. Also, please include your own promotions and awards in future issues. Don't be shy!

Request[edit]

Dear John,

I noticed that you have a lot of experience with getting articles to FA status. I have been working on the Ohio Wesleyan University page article and am trying to get it to FA status. I was wondering if you could provide some advice on how the article can be improved? Also, any contributions to it will be even more appreciated! Thank you so much for your time! I greatly appreciate it! WikiprojectOWU 01:54, 23 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
