Wiki Travel

[edit]

Have you thought about adding data at Wiki Travel? The Encyclopedia is great, BUT Wiki Travel would allow you to post all of the about local events and attractions without sounding like you work at the WV Welcome CenterCoal town guy (talk) 16:21, 5 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, KanawhaCo. We welcome your contributions to Wikipedia, but if you are affiliated with some of the people, places or things you have written about in the article Kanawha County, West Virginia, you should consider our guidance on Conflicts of interest and take a look at the Plain and simple conflict of interest guide.

All editors are required to comply with Wikipedia's neutral point of view content policy. People who are very close to a subject often have a distorted view of it, which may cause them to inadvertently edit in ways that make the article either too flattering or too disparaging. People with a close connection to a subject are not absolutely prohibited from editing about that subject, but they need to be especially careful about ensuring their edits are verified by reliable sources and writing with as little bias as possible.

If you are very close to a subject, here are some ways you can reduce the risk of problems:

  • Avoid or exercise great caution when editing or creating articles related to you, your organization, or its competitors, as well as projects and products they are involved with.
  • Be cautious about deletion discussions. Everyone is welcome to provide information about independent sources in deletion discussions, but avoid advocating for deletion of articles about your competitors.
  • Avoid linking to the Wikipedia article or website of your organization in other articles (see Wikipedia:Spam).
  • Exercise great caution so that you do not accidentally breach Wikipedia's content policies.

Please familiarize yourself with relevant content policies and guidelines, especially those pertaining to neutral point of view, verifiability of information, and autobiographies.

For information on how to contribute to Wikipedia when you have a conflict of interest, please see our frequently asked questions for organizations. Thank you. noq (talk) 11:12, 6 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Earl Loyd and WV

[edit]

I can see that indeed Earl did play for WV. However we have to very careful here. We sould have thousands of people who could be in the list if the standard was, they were there for a period of time. I love WV too, but there are some standards for an encyclopedia we have to watch. Please be aware that if you are a repessentative of Kanawha County, its a conflict of interest to edit the article. If you are not a rep, fine, but at least try to cooperate with folks, I would love to help if you wantCoal town guy (talk) 15:02, 6 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

response from KanawhaCo

[edit]

Thanks for all of the tips and rewrites. I am new to this whole wikipedia stuff. So I am guessing this is the best method of writting back to you? Before February 28, 2013 I was unaware it would be a conflict of interest to be a representative of the Kanawha County Commission and publish articles. You mentioned cooperating with folks and you possibly helping; I am willing to work with you.

However it was not asked of me to add a notable people/residents section on the article. That was my own doing. I personally met Earl Lloyd at a ball game years ago. I figured it would be a good honorable mention that someone like him lived in Kanawha County for a while and went on to becoming one of the first African American NBA players.

Also while we are on the subject, even though I do not have definative proof, Nick Nolte (actor) had a vacation home in Spring Hill, (South Charleston) area. My own grandfather used to have coffee with him. One of my former co-workers who was a cop had arrested him on several occassions.

Another notable person from this area, Charles Manson. My grandfather went to school with him when he was a kid living in the Charleston area. You want to add him? :-D

Again, sorry if I violated any wiki policies. I look forward to further collaborations.

How can I change the KanawhaCo user name? I tried looking for the section to change it.

As far as changing a user name, ask at the TeaHouse, I will provide you the link. IF it can be shown that Charles Manson lived in Kanaewha County, go for it. The whole idea is to maintain neutrality, there is a 5 Pillars of Wikipedia editing, that I will post on your page. I have been on Wikipedia for about a year, its been fun, I have been able to actually get coal towns defined with a neutral point of view and as you very well know, WV has a "few" coal towns. It is fandamtastic that you want to add data. Its applauded, its welcomed. My experience at the start was great because I had an Admin or 2 help me out in a positive manner. There is nothing worse than folks who do not welcome a user who wants to contibute and is learning the method of Wikipedia. Let me be one oof the first to say Welcome. IF you want, you can also join Wikiproject WV, helpful folks as well, with a knowledge of the state.Coal town guy (talk) 16:14, 6 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
There is a link in the section I added at the top of this page that explains how to request a name change. noq (talk) 18:13, 6 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Change of username

[edit]

Over a week ago you were informed about the issues with your chosen username. It is in clear violation of GROUPNAME. As of this moment you have not initiated the request. The link and instructions are indicated in the notice posted a week ago and the link is also in this message. Please be advised that if you do not initiate a change of username request by this weekend the account will be closed. -- Alexf(talk) 12:54, 8 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

WHoah, this is a new editor, I think we can be a tad more helpful here dont you? They were made aware that they need to change their name and have indicated they would do so.Coal town guy (talk) 13:33, 8 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I finally got around to submitting my request for a new username Alexf. Thanks Coal town guy for sticking up for me. I greatly appreciate it. I would be honored to help out with the Project WV. Soon to be IamMcDonnell
Glad you requested. As per the warning, sorry if it sounds callous and direct but we deal with hundreds of accounts daily that violate the rules. Notice the account was not closed outright but an editor let you know about the issue a week ago and the request was not made until now. This precludes the closing of the account until a bureaucrat makes a decision and changes the account name. I see no problem with the request so I am confident it will be granted. Just give them a couple of days as sometimes they are overworked. Thanks for your attention to the issue. -- Alexf(talk) 14:12, 8 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
No worries Alexf, I have several years of customer service experience. I know what it is like to deal with people. Soon to be IamMcDonnell
