New features

  • The style and colors for warning boxes, error messages, and success messages in all skins of MediaWiki has been changed. [1]

VisualEditor news

  • You will soon be able to switch from editing in VisualEditor to editing wikitext directly without having to save the page. You can't yet switch from wikitext to VisualEditor but developers hope to make it possible in the future. [2]

Problems

  • There was a problem on October 31 during the activation of MediaWiki 1.22wmf2 on test wikis. mediawiki.org was also broken, and if you had problems logging in, it was probably because of this as well.

Future

  • Because of the problem with MediaWiki 1.22wmf2, the calendar has changed. It will be added to mediawiki.org and non-Wikipedia sites on November 4, and all Wikipedia sites on November 7.

JavaScript / Gadget developers

  • Due to a recent change, gadgets and user scripts that use jQuery UI should explicitly load the appropriate modules, as they may not be loaded by default. [3]
  • Developers have started to remove long-deprecated methods. You should check the JavaScript console (in debug=true mode) and look for deprecation warnings and their stack trace. [4]

New features

  • You can now use the "Autonym" font of the Universal Language Selector (ULS) to display the name of languages (for example in navigation templates) in their correct script. To do this, add the CSS class "autonym" to the elements that include language names. Note that this font only works for the name of languages, not for any other text. [5]

Problems

  • There was a problem with Parsoid (the program used by VisualEditor to convert wikitext to annotated HTML) on November 4, between 19:40 and 20:40 (UTC). Encoding issues caused non-ASCII characters (including those with diacritics, like "é") to be broken when converted to wikitext and saved to the page. [6]

Future

  • The Beta Features tool is now available on Commons and Meta-Wiki. With it, you can test new features before they're added for everyone. The plan is to add this tool to all wikis on November 21. [7]
  • MediaWiki 1.23wmf3 was added to test wikis on November 7. It will arrive to non-Wikipedia wikis on November 12 and all Wikipedia wikis on November 14 (calendar). [8]
  • The MassMessage tool will be added to all wikis on November 14. It will make it simpler to send messages across wikis. [9]
  • The button of the Search page will soon be changed to be blue and bigger (see the difference). [10]
  • You will soon be able to add a page name as parameter for {{REVISIONID}}, {{REVISIONUSER}} and {{REVISIONTIMESTAMP}} and similar functions, by writing for example {{REVISIONID:Apple}}. [11]
  • In the future, when you hide a CentralNotice banner on a wiki, it will also be hidden on other Wikimedia sites. [12]

  • MediaWiki 1.23wmf4 was added to test wikis on November 14. It will arrive to non-Wikipedia wikis on November 19 and all Wikipedia wikis on November 21 (calendar).
  • The new Search tool (CirrusSearch) will be added to *.wikimedia.org, Wikimania and Wikisource wikis on November 19, and Wiktionary wikis on November 21 (except where it's already available). Once it is added, you can test it by adding &srbackend=CirrusSearch to the address of the search results page. It will become the main search engine on Wikivoyage wikis on November 21. [14]

New features

  • The Beta Features announced before are now available on all Wikimedia wikis. You can test new features easily by changing your Beta preferences. VisualEditor is one of those features on sites where it works and isn't automatically enabled. There is also a new media viewer and changes in the article text style. [16]
  • Tools developers can now create tools that use the OAuth protocol to connect to accounts on Wikimedia sites. As a user, you can use those tools to make edits and other changes with your account without giving the tool your password. [17]

  • There will be no major code changes on the week of November 25 because many developers will be on holiday for Thanksgiving.
  • The editing interface of Page: pages on Wikisource (working with the Proofread Page extension) will soon also work without JavaScript. [18]

To village or not to village

Hi again Keith. Can you give advice here ? Settlements, however small, are written as villages if they have a church (extablished CofE ?) - I've osmosis[ed] this from watching your edits. However, a place could be so small that in itself it would, without a church, be considered a hamlet, but has a church that has been made redundant and therefore not now part of an ecclesiastic parish or diocese. Could such redundancy make a previous tiny village a hamlet ? Does the fact that a very small settlement is also a civil parish automatically covert a hamlet to a village ? Thanks. Difficult area here. I would say that a place having a church, probably of any type, is clearly an indication of a village. I would think that once a village then it should remain a village even if the church is redundant. I would not have thought that having a civil parish named after it makes it a village. Try to use settlement if there is a problem of what to call it. Keith D (talk) 00:37, 1 December 2013 (UTC)
Thanks for that - from web searches on the topic, whether or not a settlement can be a village or a hamlet seems to be bit of a moveable feast. Your suggestion of 'settlement' where there could be some debate is sensible. If a village church has been demolished would a small settlement then become a hamlet ? - as you say - difficult area. This does cause a bit of a headache regarding which cat to add, as we can't add both. Acabashi (talk) 09:56, 1 December 2013 (UTC)
They all went in to the village category until someone decided we should have a hamlets category. I tend to leave them in the village one unless someone else moves them. Keith D (talk) 14:06, 1 December 2013 (UTC)

Millennium Dome

Keith, I hardly need 'reliable' sources. It is as clear as the nose on my face that the design of the Millennium Dome was based on the EU flag. Perhaps *you* should investigate this matter? Meanwhile I suggest that the information that I have provided is included in the article. It is impolite of you to keep removing my addition. New features

  • The CommonsMetadata feature was added to all wikis. It creates metadata information about multimedia files (like their license) that can be read automatically by computer programs. It not only works for Commons, but for all wikis, and you can use it for files on your wiki by editing templates used to describe metadata. [19]
  • JavaScript code used on Wikimedia sites is now saved locally on your computer to load faster. [20]

VisualEditor

  • You can now paste formatted content copied from external sources (not just as plain text) into VisualEditor; this includes copy/pasting from other VisualEditor windows. [21]
  • You can now open VisualEditor by adding ?veaction=edit to the page URL, regardless of your user preferences. [22]
  • Many bugs have been fixed, and VisualEditor should also look faster, for example when you save a page. [23]

Problems

  • Due to issues, the new search tool ("CirrusSearch") was recently removed from wikis where it was enabled, then added again. [24]

New features

VisualEditor

  • The toolbar is now simpler; all text styles (bold, italics, underline, subscript, etc.) are in the same menu, and the "More" menu is called "Insert". [28]
  • You can now use a basic tool to add special characters to your text. You can add more characters (useful in your language) by editing the MediaWiki interface on translatewiki.net.
  • The tool to add and edit mathematical text is now called "formula". [29]

Problems

  • There was a problem with the "Create a book" tool (Collection); books could only be exported to PDF format. The change has been undone. [30]
  • The log-in system for external tools ("OAuth") was broken on wikis that tested the new search tool. It was fixed last week. [31] [32]
  • Because of a bug, this newsletter is delivered to users using the new MediaWiki message delivery, and to community pages using the old EdwardsBot. [33]

Future

  • MediaWiki 1.23wmf7 was added to test wikis on December 12. It will be added to non-Wikipedia wikis on December 17 and all Wikipedia wikis on December 19 (calendar).
  • You will soon be able to select the language of SVG images that have translations using a drop-down menu on the image page. (see example) [34]
  • GLAMToolset, a tool to help GLAM groups (like museums) upload many pictures to Commons, will be added to Commons on December 17. [35]
  • A Draft namespace will be added to the English Wikipedia to make it easier to create new pages. You will be able to use VisualEditor for drafts if you have enabled it. [36] [37]

Premier league table template

Hi. You are one of the editors involved in the Premier league table template at Wikipedia:Village pump (technical)/Archive 121#Displaying a part of the table. The work is very close to the end and the template now looks like the one currently used at 2013–14 Premier League. I just wanted to see if you could take a look at Template:2013–14 Premier League table/sandbox and the result of the template that can be seen at User:Spudgfsh/sandbox. Please take a look at it and comment on the result. Then it is only to decide if we should highlight the team or not and then we should be ready to use it. Recent software changes

  • The latest version of MediaWiki (1.23wmf8) was added to test wikis and MediaWiki.org on December 19. It will be enabled on non-Wikipedia wikis on December 31 and on all Wikipedia wikis on January 2, 2014 (calendar).
  • You can now test the new search tool ("CirrusSearch") on all Wikisource, Wiktionary and Wikimedia chapter wikis hosted on Foundation servers. Enable "New search" in your Beta features preferences. [39]
  • There was a bug where notifications were not sent when the signature of the user leaving the message linked to a translated namespace. The problem was fixed in the software and will soon be fixed on Wikimedia sites. [40] [41]

  • If your wiki adds stars or other icons to interwiki links for featured articles in other languages, you may need to change the JavaScript code. [43]

Recent software changes

  • The latest version of MediaWiki (1.23wmf9) was added to test wikis and MediaWiki.org on January 2. It will be enabled on non-Wikipedia wikis on January 7 and on all Wikipedia wikis on January 9 (calendar).
  • The old note-taking site (Etherpad) was removed on December 30, 2013. You can see most of the documents on the new site. [70]

Problems

  • On January 2, Wikimedia Commons, Wikidata and all Wikivoyage projects were broken for 2 hours due to language cache update issues.
  • On the same day, it was not possible to edit most wikis for about 30 minutes, due to a database replication problem.

Future software changes

  • The new search tool (CirrusSearch) will be added as the default search method for Italian Wikipedia, French Wikisource, Wikidata and all Wikivoyage sites, and as a second search method for the German Wikipedia and all Wikibooks sites on January 6. [71]
  • Spanish, French, Portuguese and Russian Wikipedia users will also be able to enable CirrusSearch in their Beta Features options. [72]
  • Plural form rules for some languages will be changed. Many translations of the user interface for Belarusian, Russian, Serbian, Ukrainian and other languages will need to be changed. [73] [74] [75]

Templates

Hello Keith. Advice please on these templates. I've been adding {{Use British English}} to some English place articles. The similar temp {{EngvarB}} is also available and appears to do the same thing although, from what I can glean, it provides some kind of device whereby other corrections can be made through the bowels of Wikipedia – too complicated for me to understand. I've brought up the use of the two with Ohconfucus [86], who adds 'EngvarB', and has been very helpful. I think I've noticed that you change 'EngvarB' to 'Use British English' at times. Though the temps 'Use dmy dates' and 'Use British English' at tops of edit windows do give the uninitiated clear advice, is there an advantage in adding 'EngvarB' as well to help with Ohconfucius's processing ? I have started adding both in some articles but don't want to go too far and give myself extra self-reverting work. Do you have a view on these templates ? Many thanks. There should only be one of the Use xxx language templates in an article so that you know which variant to use. The {{engvar}} is a generic one and I usually replace it with a more specific one when I spot it, though leave for Irish and other articles where it could be contentious. Accessdates

There's no need to add accessdates to publications have have a publication date, and will not change eg accessdate: Template:Citation#cite_note-dates-1 Not required for web pages or linked documents that do not change; mainly for use of web pages that change frequently or have no publication date

That should included dated news items on the web, excluding breaking news and all dated published documents.

(You also don't need an accessdate for documents from a dated archive - for obvious reasons).

Accessdates should be given for web documents so that you can find out when they were accessed and can track down when they do to dead links. You will find that they are required for getting articles to FA standard and so should be present in articles. They are part of the reference and not distracting, they should not be reemoved. No problem. I have rated it as Low importance and C-class. Unsure of the importance level that Robert is using but cannot see it been higher that that. He also appears to go higher for the class rating that I would. On the article unsure on the UK in the lead may be it is OK for that time period but would check. Gaping Gill

Hi, Keith D

You will have noticed that I have recently made a start on creating articles on the entrances of Gaping Gill (Bar Pot, Stream Passage Pot, Jib Tunnel, Disappointment Pot, and Rat Hole have been written so far). This was motivated by the fact that the Gaping Gill itself article is pretty dreadful, and I thought that the best way of getting it sorted was by hiving off its secondary entrances into separate articles, and taking on the Gaping Gill Main Shaft and the Gaping Gill System as one article at a later date. I have tried to make the articles I have written as definitive as possible (I was aiming for GA standard - i.e. full description and full history, all fully referenced).

I thank you for rating those articles. I have no arguments with the 'C' Class rating rating you have given, but I do not think the main Gaping Gill article, which has also been rated 'C' Class, is comparable with the standard of those articles. Gaping Gill one of the major cave systems in the UK which is world famous, and which has a history of exploration going back 170 years. It is a complex system over 16 kilometres (9.9 mi) long, with a geological history stretching over at least three glaciations. Compare, say Rat Hole with the Gaping Gill article and then consider that Rat Hole is simply an entrance into the Gaping Gill Main Chamber.

In my view, the Gaping Gill article merits no more than a Stub class. Langcliffe (talk) 08:19, 20 January 2014 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) I had a look at the article, out of curiosity. It's certainly not a stub, though I wouldn't argue between "start" and "C" - but I was surprised to see it ranked as "Low" importance. As Langcliffe sets out above, it's nationally and internationally important. The reason why I think that it merits no more than a 'Stub' class is that it consists of a random sequence of snippets about the system, without any context and without any clear idea of the relative importance of those facts. Moreover, some of the 'facts' are misleading - e.g. relating the volume of York Minster to that of the Main Chamber. Thanks for the work on the new articles. I have had another look and I can see that I should not have up-rated it to a C-class article, though I think there is more there than just a stub with the number of references, images and some structure so I have reverted to a Start-class article. At suggestion about importance I have changed this to a Mid-importance. VisualEditor news

  • In the toolbar, the menu to edit the styles (like bold, italic, etc.) now has a down arrow (). The order of the Insert menu has also changed a little.
  • You can now edit <gallery /> tags with a very basic tool. [104]
  • You can now see a help page about keyboard shortcuts in the page menu. [105]
  • When you change categories, you will now see them when you save the page. [106]
  • When you edit templates, you will now see the parameters in the right order. The ones that you must add have a star (*). [107] [108]
  • The page will now be saved faster, thanks to a new way of coding the text that sends 40% less text to the servers. [109]
  • Your wiki can ask to test a new tool to edit TemplateData. [110]

Problems

  • There was a problem with search on the English and German Wikipedias between January 6 and January 14. You could not see new pages and changes in search results. [111]
  • There were "pool timeouts" errors on several wikis on January 13; it was caused by a code change that was made to fix another problem. [112]
  • On January 17, Bugzilla and Wikimedia Labs were broken for about 20 minutes due to network problems. IRC channels with recent changes (irc.wikimedia.org) were broken for about two hours. [113]

  • If you have removed JavaScript in your web browser, you will soon be able to see the orange bar saying that you have new messages. If you have changed how the bar looks with a gadget, you may need to change the gadget again. [114] [115]

  • Pages from Wikimedia sites now load faster in your browser thanks to "module storage", a way for your browser to save data like JavaScript and CSS on your computer to avoid downloading them again. See video. [120]

How did you undo a whole bunch of edits in one fell swoop?

How did you revert three consecutive vandal edits in one stroke as you just did here? In such cases why do I have to use three consecutive undos? Contact Basemetal here 14:21, 31 January 2014 (UTC)

In that case I use the Rollback link as they are all by the same user. If they are by different editors or you do not have rollback then you can do the same thing by doing a compare versions from the history list and then using the undo. Keith D (talk) 14:31, 31 January 2014 (UTC)

  • The Vector search box was changed to fix old display and accessibility issues; for example, you can now use full-text search even if you have disabled JavaScript. Lawence Sheriff School

You object to the Lawrence Sheriff Postings. What is the objection? I can email you the data as evidence, including emails and the letter from DfE and the Local Government Ombudsman. Sorry if I undid some of your work. I am new to Wiki. I am not sure if I am "Talking" to you in the correct manner. No, there is not a war. Everything is factual. I provided links to articles and can even email you the DfE letter and the LGO correspondence. These are purely facts I also added the school was 7th in GCSE tables (not a bad thing) and also pointed out 25% did not achieve the EB (fact). The Outstanding OFSTED report is very old - over 6 years old and as such is not recent. It should really be removed. Recurring problem at Hetherington

Hello, Keith D! Last summer you semi-protected Hetherington for three months because of repeated, unsourced, & undiscussed changes by IPs. (AGF I wouldn’t go so far as to call it vandalism, as it seems the subject is now a mostly Scots & Irish surname, despite its English origin. But that’s neither here nor there, considering that sourced content is being removed in favour of personal anecdotes.) Please have a look at the history and see if you think the situation warrants renewed protection for the article.   • On February 14, all sites were broken for about 15 minutes for users in Southeast Asia, Oceania and the western part of North America. It was due to problems with cache servers.

  • The link tool now tells you when you're linking to a disambiguation or redirect page. [179]
  • You can now change image display (like thumbnail, frame and frameless) with VisualEditor. [180]
  • Wikitext warnings will now hide when you remove wikitext from paragraphs you are editing. [181]

Hello, the references need to give more detail such as the publisher, date of publication and an access date. Some of the references are duplicates and should be combined using <ref name="ref1">....</ref> for the first occurrence and then just use <ref name="ref1"/> for subsequent usages.
Unsure about the context tag that someone has added as looks OK, though may be it just applies to the list which could do with some introductory text. The list tag could be dealt with either by converting the list to a table or by changing it to prose.

WikiProject status guidelines state that a project is inactive if there has been no significant edits to the main page in at least 4 months and, in the case of this project, it's been a year.
