If you have a conflict of interest, you should avoid or exercise great caution when:

  1. editing or creating articles related to you, your organization, or its competitors, as well as projects and products they are involved with;
  2. participating in deletion discussions about articles related to your organization or its competitors; and
  3. linking to the Wikipedia article or website of your organization in other articles (see Wikipedia:Spam).

Your username

[edit]

Hello, I just wanted to talk to you about your username. Wikipedia has a policy against editors who choose a username that represents a company or other organization. In many cases, editors can be blocked pending a change of name but I've looked over your contributions to Kids Help Phone and they've done a lot to improve the article so I'd rather not do that. I strongly encourage you to request a username that identifies you as a person, you can do so at this page. If you need help with doing this please let me know. If you want to continue to identify with the Kids Help Phone organization, that's totally fine, but you'd still need to change your username to clarify that you don't represent the entire organization and that you're editing as a single person (like "KHP-Bob", or "Kids Help Phone Helper").

Also, as noted above it is suspected that you may have a conflict of interest at the Kids Help Phone article. That doesn't mean that you are forbidden to edit it, but Wikipedia does tend to give COI edits greater scrutiny. A report was opened at our conflict of interest noticeboard about the matter, I encourage you to comment here to clarify things and ask any questions you might have.

I do encourage you to change your name before you edit much more, failure to do so may cause your editing to be restricted until you do change your name. Thank you. -- Atama 22:32, 20 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Atama. I'm not familiar with the coding in Wikipedia, so I'm not sure if this message will get to you or if I should try to leave a message on your own user account (I don't want to muck anything up!). I've put in a request to change my username and I've also left a comment about the edits in the forum as you've suggestion. Thanks for all of your advice and I apologize for doing anything wrong. If you think I should do anything else to remedy this, I'm happy to take any suggestions. Thanks. Kids Help Phone (talk) 20:16, 26 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

No worries, I have a watch on your talk page so you can post here with a question. I think you've been doing a good job overall with the article, which is why I only asked you to change your name. It's common for editors to have their accounts blocked pending a name change if their name is promotional in nature, but based on your behavior I felt it unnecessary. Consider that a personal endorsement that you're off to a good start, and definitely feel free to ask me for any advice you need. -- Atama 23:44, 26 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Quick question - I'd like to re-rename this account (as I received feedback that the suggested "KHP helper" was still identifying with an organization. Should I resubmit my name change request? Or is it best to edit the original request. Again, just wanting to follow protocol. Thanks in advance; I really appreciate your help. Kids Help Phone (talk) 15:10, 28 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Resubmit a new user name. Our username policy does suggest that a name like "KHP helper" is acceptable, but it's up to the discretion of the bureaucrats reviewing your request, so I guess you should pick something totally unrelated to Kids Help Phone. But yes, go ahead and add another name to your original request and they should review it, creating a new request shouldn't be necessary. -- Atama 17:57, 29 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Username blocked

[edit]
Your account has been blocked from editing Wikipedia because it appears to be mainly intended or used for publicity and/or promotional purposes. In addition, you have failed to provide in a timely manner an alternate username which meets the username policy at your username change request. Please read the following carefully.
Why can't I edit Wikipedia?

Your account's edits and/or username indicate that it is being used on behalf of a company, group, or organization for purposes of promotion and/or publicity. You have violated one or more of our rules, including rules against adding inappropriate external links, posting advertisements, using Wikipedia for promotion, and editing inappropriately with a conflict of interest. This kind of activity is considered spamming and is forbidden by Wikipedia's policies. Although Wikipedia has a great many articles on companies, groups, and organizations, it is considered inappropriate for such groups to use Wikipedia to write about themselves. In addition, usernames like yours are disallowed under our username policy.

Am I allowed to make these edits if I change my username?

Probably not. See Wikipedia:FAQ/Organization for a helpful list of frequently asked questions by people in your position. See Wikipedia:Conflict of interest for the kinds of limitations you would have to obey if you did want to continue editing about your company, group, or organization. If this does not fit in with your goals here, you will not be allowed to edit again. Consider using one of the many websites that allow this instead.

What can I do now?

You are still welcome to write about something other than your company or organization. If you do intend to make useful contributions on some other topic, you must convince a Wikipedia administrator that you mean it. To that end, please do the following:

  • Add the text {{unblock-coiun|Your proposed new username|Your reason here}} below this message box.
  • Replace the text "Your proposed new username" with a new username you are willing to use. See Special:Listusers to search for available usernames. Your new username will need to meet our username policy.
  • Replace the text "Your reason here" with your reason to be unblocked. In this reason, you must:
  • Convince us that you understand the reason for your block and that you will not repeat the edits for which you were blocked.
  • Describe in general terms the contributions that you intend to make if you are unblocked.
