RIBE[edit]

Hi, I see you are a deleted-page-resurector:)

Some time ago, I created a page for 'RIBE' which is the name of an automotive fastener. It was flagged as an advertisement and deleted.

I made the page after I had considerable difficulty fixing a problem on my car, in the hopes that it could give a little info and help document the fastener type - definitely not advertising.

I'd like to see the text to figure out what was wrong. This topic refers to a real, physical item people have in their garages, and I'd like to try and have wikipedia contain the best mechanical engineering reference set possible....

Thanks! (please ping my talk page in case I somehow miss your response here...) Mboard182 (talk) 06:41, 3 March 2010 (UTC)

Hi Mboard182, I have reviewed your request to userfy RIBE and, seeing no problem, have gone ahead and done it. You may now find the article at User:Mboard182/RIBE. I agree, there was nothing in it that should have been construed as advertising; the user who tagged it as advertising was mistaken. However, in looking at the deletion log, the actual deletion was for a different reason: "Unnecessary article; the disambiguation page is enough." I believe what User:Nihiltres meant by this was that, because the article was only a couple short sentences, it only merited a short mention at Ribe (disambiguation), no need for a whole page on it. Therefore, my advice is to build the article up quite a bit more, providing some more detail and a few references if you can find any, before you move it back into the main encyclopedia space (currently it's in your user space, where casual readers will not find it). Sorry to make you go through this when you just want to improve Wikipedia's coverage, but unfortunately there is no shortage of administrators here who will happily delete any article that doesn't meet rather strict criteria (listed here).
Anyway, thanks for contacting me, and if you have any questions or require anything else, feel free to drop me a line! -kotra (talk) 19:54, 3 March 2010 (UTC)
Great, thanks. For now the Ribe (disambiguation) page will be fine. we are still trying to get definitive sourses on RIBE / Polydrive, so I'll get back to it if more info surfaces. Mboard182 (talk) 03:58, 4 March 2010 (UTC)
Sounds good. -kotra (talk) 00:20, 6 March 2010 (UTC)

Archive[edit]

Hi, Are you able to archive any more of the discussion sections at Fruitarianism.? Zanze123 (talk) 22:25, 2 April 2010 (UTC)

Sure. It's done now. -kotra (talk) 16:56, 8 April 2010 (UTC)

What's the best way to archive? Zanze123 (talk) 19:37, 21 April 2010 (UTC)

There are number of ways. Help:Archiving a talk page describes each. For me, the procedure is pretty simple: On the talk page, I add a link to a new archive page (like /Archive 999), click on the link to start adding to the new archive page, and cut and paste the archived discussions to it. I add {{talkarchive}} to the top and bottom of the new archive page so that people know what it is. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask! -kotra (talk) 23:18, 21 April 2010 (UTC)

Replaceable fair use File:Pomos idol.jpg[edit]

Ambox warning pn.svg

Thanks for uploading File:Pomos idol.jpg. I noticed the description page specifies that the media is being used under a claim of fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first non-free content criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information or which could be adequately covered with text alone. If you believe this media is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the media description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per our non-free content policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. --The Evil IP address (talk) 10:28, 25 May 2010 (UTC)

Username[edit]

Yes I know that but my signature was creating the problem. Wasn't it? I hope im not mistaken. SO i changed my signature YEAH YEAH NUTTY (talk) 01:19, 30 June 2010 (UTC)

RE: Wolfpuss(y)[edit]

I noticed. I also long ago realized that ignoring sarcasm of that sort is the best way to counter it.

The end reaction is about what I expected, frankly. Username and sig debates very rarely end up well, because a user who's possessive enough to let it go to debate in the first place rather than changing it as soon as they're notified of the problem is quite unlikely to change their mind once 40 people tell them instead. It's an amusing coincidence how many of the people who claim that their crass username or 6-line blinking signature is totally not meant to bug anyone end up being the same ones who would rather be kicked off the site than change them to something that doesn't annoy people. --erachima talk 10:09, 18 July 2010 (UTC)

Yeah, you may be right about ignoring sarcasm. And the end reaction... it's unfortunately true. There is something about usernames and sigs that people feel they own, and are part of their identity. Unfortunately, the community essentially owns them and can take them away. That concept is repellent to people, so it's no surprise people often get combative over their usernames and sigs. Not sure there's anything that can be done about that... -kotra (talk) 11:07, 18 July 2010 (UTC)

Deletion of Article - Onward Technologies[edit]

Hi Kotra,

I'm a newbie to Wiki!

The page "Onward Technologies" got deleted due to "Conflict of Interest"

Can you give me the draft version, which I could edit and resubmit for proof reading?

Apologies for the slow response. I see you seem to have resolved the issue with the editor who removed the content in question. If you require any further assistance, I recommend you ask another administrator or experienced editor to help, as I don't come around here much anymore and will be slow in my responses (may take weeks or even months sometimes). Sorry again, and thanks for helping to build Wikipedia! -kotra (talk) 19:06, 9 December 2011 (UTC)

MSU Interview[edit]

Dear Kotra,

My name is Jonathan Obar user:Jaobar, I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Wikipedia administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the communityHERE, where it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.

So a few things about the interviews:

  • Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
  • Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)
  • All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.
  • All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.
  • The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.

Bottom line is that we really need your help, and would really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you. If interested, please send me an email at obar@msu.edu (to maintain anonymity) and I will add your name to my offline contact list. If you feel comfortable doing so, you can post your nameHERE instead.

If you have questions or concerns at any time, feel free to email me at obar@msu.edu. I will be more than happy to speak with you.

Thanks in advance for your help. We have a lot to learn from you.

Sincerely,

Jonathan Obar --Jaobar (talk) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Chlopeck (talkcontribs) 03:48, 20 February 2012 (UTC)

I appreciate the offer, but I haven't done any admin work in years, or even done much editing at all for the same period of time. So I don't think I would be a good interviewee. But I wish you good luck with the project! -kotra (talk) 17:59, 20 February 2012 (UTC)

Dispute resolution survey[edit]

Dispute Resolution – Survey Invite

Hello Kotra. I am currently conducting a study on the dispute resolution processes on the English Wikipedia, in the hope that the results will help improve these processes in the future. Whether you have used dispute resolution a little or a lot, now we need to know about your experience. The survey takes around five minutes, and the information you provide will not be shared with third parties other than to assist in analyzing the results of the survey. No personally identifiable information will be released.

Please click HERE to participate.
Many thanks in advance for your comments and thoughts.

You are receiving this invitation because you have had some activity in dispute resolution over the past year. For more information, please see the associated research page. Steven Zhang DR goes to Wikimania! 01:14, 6 April 2012 (UTC)

In the past 2 years, I haven't so much as glanced at anything relating to dispute resolution, and have barely made any edits at all. So my knowledge on the subject is hopelessly obsolete, and I won't be participating in the survey. But thanks for doing it... as a person who still greatly values Wikipedia, I appreciate it. -kotra (talk) 02:34, 6 April 2012 (UTC)

You're Invited! Wikipedia Takes Portland 2012[edit]

Photographing sites in Portland listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) is the main focus of Wikipedia Takes Portland. This year the event will kick off at Saturday, September 22nd at noon at Pioneer Courthouse Square. Currently, there are no formal plans--this is simply an opportunity to meet fellow Wikipedians before trekking around PDX to photograph sites on the Register. Not interested in coming downtown? You can still upload your images as part of the international photo competition. Be sure to RSVP and share the results of your work HERE (number of images uploaded, links to galleries, successes, feedback, etc. Click here for more information about meetups in Portland! --Another Believer (Talk) 21:37, 21 September 2012 (UTC)

DragonSpires Page[edit]

Hi, I wanted to swing by and leave a note that the DragonSpires page is close to deletion. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Video_games#DragonSpires I figured it was worth passing along, in case you might wish to offer any insight to the folks making the decision. Thanks! 4.154.6.11 (talk) 08:50, 6 January 2013 (UTC)

Thanks for the note. I don't have any insights worth passing along regarding DragonSpires, about 7 years ago I spent a lot of time searching for suitable references for the article, and found not much more than what you see now. Perhaps there are more references available now, 7 years later, but I don't care enough anymore to search. That would be the only way to save the article: finding more reliable references that assert the notability of the subject. -kotra (talk) 23:57, 10 January 2013 (UTC)

Thanks for letting me know. There was a time when I would've cared to comment, but I understand that the majority of the people who write policy in WP decided long ago to exclude all topics that don't meet WP's threshold for academic recognition. So there isn't much point in offering a keep vote there, even though there is nothing incorrect or POV in that article. -kotra (talk) 19:50, 6 February 2013 (UTC)
