Earthquake edits[edit]

Please note that many of your earthquake related edits are, at best, problematical. I have reverted several of your edits (e.g., here and here, at Lists of earthquakes and Template:Earthquakes in 1975), but there are broader problems that need addressing.

First and foremost: DO NOT EDIT WAR. That would be where you simply redo an edit that has been reverted. The proper response is to then open a discussion on the article's Talk page about why the edit should or should not be done; see WP:BRD.

Second: newspapers (and other non-technical sources) are not authoritative sources for earthquake magnitudes and related data. You did find the ANSS site (at https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes), which is good for recent quakes, but the definitive source is the ISC (see Template:Infobox_earthquake for details).

Third: There is a further complication in that "magnitude" has different aspects, measured by different scales, and resulting in slightly different values, so that there can be questions of which scale to use.(See Seismic magnitude scales for a bare summary.) Which ever scale is used, it needs to be indicated (see Template:M).

Fourth: because of these complications it is very important to document – that is, too cite – where a particular magnitude is taken. I am not going to go into detail about that here because the more important matter is for you open a discussion where your edits have been reverted. ♦ J. Johnson (JJ) (talk) 20:41, 17 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Heavy.com? What was the thought process in deciding that that was an appropriate source? Dawnseeker2000 07:36, 8 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

East coast earthquake?[edit]

Hi, could you please give some kind of explanation for why this doesn't satisfy the requirements to go on the article? I don't want to start an edit war but I really feel like it would fall exactly under other generally notable earthquakes with the news coverage of it at the very least. exoplanetaryscience (talk) 07:14, 19 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Notice of Request for Arbitration[edit]

You are involved in a recently filed request for arbitration. Please review the request at Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Case#Inclusion of "otherwise notable" earthquakes on List of earthquakes in xxxx year and, if you wish to do so, enter your statement and any other material you wish to submit to the Arbitration Committee. As threaded discussion is not permitted on most arbitration pages, please ensure that you make all comments in your own section only. Additionally, the guide to arbitration and the Arbitration Committee's procedures may be of use.
