Citation wanted[edit]

I notice your recent edit to Nicole Fox (Nebraska politician), adding the year of her term's end and the name of her successor to the infobox. Good to have this information; but it'd be better by far if it was incorporated into the article text, with a citation.

Per MOS:INFOBOX, the whole purpose of an infobox is "to summarize (and not supplant) key facts that appear in the article". It's certainly easy to slap a name and a date into an infobox—easier than writing a complete sentence or two, with a citation, in the body text. But while IP and newbie editors might shrink from the awful task of writing English prose and then figuring out how to format a citation, we veterans should be able to manage it easily.

The citation is especially critical in BLP articles, and doubly so with articles about politicians, which tend to attract problem edits. If an IP or redlink editor comes along and changes a date that's already supported by a citation, article-watchers can quickly check to see if it's a legitimate fix. Without that citation, though, the article-watcher has to either take to Google or decide to take the chance that the change is valid. And that's how we get persistent errors in WP articles—errors that, unfortunately, make their way into other websites, which makes it harder for more conscientious editors to find and fix them.

I've fixed Fox, who's on my watchlist; it helps that I've just finished rewriting a section on another election, so am in the right psychic space to hit the Nebraska Secretary of State's website and run down those vote counts. However, if you've done other edits of the same kind, I'd urge you to go back and add citations. For a better encyclopedia! Ammodramus (talk) 22:44, 20 August 2017 (UTC)

Updated DYK query.svgOn 25 August 2017, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Emma Clara Schweer, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that at the time of her death at age 105, Emma Clara Schweer was believed to be the oldest elected official in the United States? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Emma Clara Schweer. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Emma Clara Schweer), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. WikiProject Women in Red/The World Contest[edit]

Hi. Thankyou for your participation in the challenge series or/and contests. In November The Women in Red World Contest is being held to try to produce new articles for as many countries worldwide and occupations as possible. There will be over $4000 in prizes to win, including Amazon vouchers and paid subscriptions. If this would appeal to you and you think you'd be interested in contributing new articles on women during this month for your region or wherever please sign up in the participants section. The articles done may also count towards the ongoing challenge. If you're not interested in prize money yourself but are willing to participate and raise money to buy books about women for others to use, this is also fine. Help would also be appreciated in drawing up the lists of missing articles. If you think of any missing articles please add them to the sub lists by continent at Missing articles. Thankyou, and if taking part, good luck!♦ Dr. Blofeld 08:54, 5 October 2017 (UTC)

Puerto Rico should be included in "Americans" article. Your edition is not neutral[edit]

Just as Puerto Ricans are counted as immigrants in the section "Hispanic and Latino Americans". Americans in Puerto Rico must.

It must be unilateral, if Puerto Ricans in the US they appear as immigrants, the Americans must be in Puerto Rico as such.

Or neither.

It is not neutral like that. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 190.113.112.97 (talk) 20:22, 11 December 2017 (UTC)

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited 1st Avenue (Portland, Oregon), you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Interstate 405 (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Gus Malzahn[edit]

Hello, I saw you removed the nickname “Gus” from the Gus Malzahn. I am concerned this is not the right decision because: 1. The name at the top of the page is still “Gus” 2. Most people and articles refer to him as Gus. Thank you, Ral 33 (talk) 21:22, 1 January 2018 (UTC)

@Ral 33: see WP:NICKNAME. MB298 (talk) 21:25, 1 January 2018 (UTC)
@MB298: Yes, WP:NICKNAME section 2.7 says, “The name used most often to refer to a person in reliable sources is generally the one that should be used as the article title, even if it is not the person's "real" name, and even if it appears to pass judgement on the person (as with Alfred the Great).

If people published under one or more pen names and/or their own name, the best known of these names is chosen.” Gus has published a book (ISBN 978-1-585186-54-9) and he used the name “Gus Malzahn,” the name most people refer to him with. I believe a book written by the person is as reliable a source as possible.

Yes, the article title should remain "Gus", but the "Gus" in quotation marks in the lead sentence is unnecessary. MB298 (talk) 21:58, 1 January 2018 (UTC)
I believe somewhere in the article outside of the title, his nickname being “Gus”should be referenced. Perhaps in the infobox? Ral 33 (talk) 22:02, 1 January 2018 (UTC)
Seems like a good idea. MB298 (talk) 22:03, 1 January 2018 (UTC)

Joey Gibson (political activist)[edit]

FYI, someone recently also had added an external link I asked SarekOfVulcan to remove joeygibsonforsenate.com: Joey Gibson for Senate It appears the battle with local Antifa does not just happen on the streets of Portland and Vancouver, but on wiki as well. I have to stay away for editing Patriot Prayer and related areas for a while (TBAN issues from my past), for full disclosure.

A side note about election plans, no filings yet with Federal Election Commission[144], as Sen. Maria Cantwell is strongly positions, and there is not a peep out of the Washington State Republicans [145]; I wonder what is happening as all I can find is [146] and not even an address.

Anyway, I was wondering if the section "Career" might be bettered titled as 'Activism' or something given that this is not really his career that earns him a living, it's not even paid work. Just a thought and I'll leave it at that, thanks - C. W. Gilmore (talk) 22:28, 28 February 2018 (UTC)

@C. W. Gilmore: I've changed it to "Political activism". MB298 (talk) 22:29, 28 February 2018 (UTC)
The only Bio information I can find lists Joey as a student, but that was from last summer. I've done a lot of research in the area because of Antifa and also the Jeff Davis Park so if you get stuck with finding RS, I might be able to help. Cheers C. W. Gilmore (talk) 22:35, 28 February 2018 (UTC)

Political party strength in Kentucky Wikipedia page[edit]

I'm sorry to bother you but I was wondering if you could help me fix the Political party strength in Kentucky Wikipedia page? I was trying to update the composition of the Kentucky House of Representatives from 64 Republicans, 36 Democrats to 63 Republicans, 37 Democrats in light of a Democratic pickup of a Republican seat in a special election. I would appreciate it if you could help me. Thanks! Count Awesome (talk) 21:41, 5 March 2018 (UTC)

Looks like you got the last pictures of 'those flags' - Jefferson Davis Park, Washington[edit]

I hope to update the article soon:

As the only place in the area where 'those flags' fly so visible from the interstate, it seems this park will continue to be the focus of support and protest. C. W. Gilmore (talk) 21:38, 4 April 2018 (UTC)

New userpage?[edit]

I saw you recently deleted your userpage. There are a number of incoming redirects (former usernames, subpages, etc.) that redirected there. I see you've done so to populate the page with your meta userpage. If you plan on keeping your en userpage empty, would you like those redirects deleted or do you wish to point them to your talk, here? ~ Amory (utc) 15:42, 23 April 2018 (UTC)

@Amorymeltzer: I'll redirect my userpage to here and the bot will handle the rest. MB298 (talk) 01:01, 24 April 2018 (UTC)

File:US House 2014.svg[edit]

Hello MB298, would you please fix the shading of Illinois's 6th congressional district at File:US House 2014.svg? The current version shows is as a Democrat hold, while it actually was a Republican hold, by Peter Roskam. --1990'sguy (talk) 20:40, 11 May 2018 (UTC)

@1990'sguy:  Done! MB298 (talk) 22:00, 11 May 2018 (UTC)
Thanks! Also, I just noticed that New Hampshire's 2nd congressional district does not have the correct shade (it's factually correct -- a Dem hold -- but the coloring is a slightly different blue than the other Dem holds). Would you please correct that? --1990'sguy (talk) 03:08, 12 May 2018 (UTC)
No problem, done with the NH one as well. MB298 (talk) 17:13, 12 May 2018 (UTC)

Hi and ty for your heads up on ethnicity[edit]

Many RS talk about Gina Ortiz Jones as a Filipina-American, so I was surprised to see you removing her ethnicity from the article header. But after chatting with editors more experienced than I am in IRC en-help, I learned that you were right and I was wrong. Thanks for improving the article.
