Unusual block message[edit]

Hello Malinaccier - I just noticed you left an unusual block message on the aforementioned talk page. Do bear in mind that when blocking someone, you must show them where, and how, to appeal their blocks. The correct template is below; change "x" for time and reason:

Stop icon with clock
You have been blocked from editing for a period of x for x. Once the block has expired, you are welcome to make useful contributions. If you think there are good reasons why you should be unblocked, you may request an unblock by first reading the guide to appealing blocks, then adding the following text to the bottom of your talk page: {{unblock|reason=Your reason here ~~~~}}.

As you can see, the guide to appealing blocks is mentioned within this one - do use this message from now on. Regards, Patient Zerotalk 10:47, 5 July 2017 (UTC)

In fact, check out Template:Uw-block for more parameters. Patient Zerotalk 10:48, 5 July 2017 (UTC)
Hello. Thanks for your concern, but keep in mind that there is no formal obligation or reason for an administrator to explain how to request to be unblocked (please see the blocking policy WP:EXPLAINBLOCK). Just so you know, the block message displays information on appealing an unblock (see MediaWiki:Blockedtext). I do not think it is a bad idea to explain on the talk page how to appeal a block, but the blocked user is already given instructions on how to do so. Thanks, Malinaccier (talk) 18:21, 5 July 2017 (UTC)

DYK nomination of Peter Schmidt (economist)[edit]

DYK for Peter Schmidt (economist)[edit]

Updated DYK query.svg On 15 July 2017, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Peter Schmidt (economist), which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that economist Peter Schmidt's 1977 work on stochastic frontier models is considered one of the most influential Journal of Econometrics papers of all time? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Peter Schmidt (economist). You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Peter Schmidt (economist)), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Rollbacks[edit]

Not sure if my ping worked (I've had trouble with them not working before, even when I follow the advice at Help:Fixing failed pings) so I'm posting here. Would you mind explaining what you meant by "recent edit warring concerns"? I have, to my knowledge, never even been seriously accused of edit warring, let along had any problem with it.

After trying to figure out what you meant on my own, I realized that my block log contains a block for supposed edit warring, but this thread (particularly, my longer post in the middle with all the diffs in it) should be ample enough proof that the block was a mistake, and Ritchie's subsequent correction and apology are there as well. ᛗᛁᛟᛚᚾᛁᚱPants Tell me all about it. 20:52, 18 July 2017 (UTC)

@MPants at work and MjolnirPants: I am willing to believe I made a mistake here, but what happened here, and here, and here? Malinaccier (talk) 21:00, 18 July 2017 (UTC)
I'm not completely sure I remember what was up with the IPv6 editor, though I seem to recall it was retaliation for several editors templating them for edit warring. I believe I only reverted once at Mark Dice, though several other editors also reverted the IP.
PraiseTheShroom is a blocked sock of Perfect Orange Sphere (the first and last link you gave are about the same 3RRN report), and even if you want to ignore the result (no violation) and the summary by Ian and Neutrality, I can provide you with diffs of some truly egregious and over-the-top deception by that sockmaster. Hell, as far as I can tell, they've discovered the magic of VPN's and continued socking and lying about sources, as of a couple days ago. ᛗᛁᛟᛚᚾᛁᚱPants Tell me all about it. 21:24, 18 July 2017 (UTC)
@MPants at work and MjolnirPants: My interpretation of the last case is that you were both engaged in an edit war, but the admins declined to block either of you. Since there was no violation of 3RR and the other cases do appear to be spurious (it was hard to tell without really going in depth), I will enable rollback on your account so long as you understand not to use rollback as part of an edit war. Sound good? Malinaccier (talk) 21:38, 18 July 2017 (UTC)
I suspect that if you dive into that 3RRN thread, reading the whole thing and checking the diffs out for yourself, you will change your mind. But since I honestly have no intention (or even inclination) towards edit warring, I'll happily make such a promise. I'd go so far as to take an oath against edit warring. Hell, I'll even... (drumroll please) pinky swear not to. I've explained to others before that I normally limit myself to 2 reversions per day, and it's no trouble to apply that to a new tool. ᛗᛁᛟᛚᚾᛁᚱPants Tell me all about it. 21:57, 18 July 2017 (UTC)
Done deal! Malinaccier (talk) 22:06, 18 July 2017 (UTC)
Thank you very much, and please accept my apologies if I seemed overly defensive. Your comment kind of caught me off guard, as I just came back from a weeks-long wikibreak and the recent drama I've been involved in wasn't fresh in my mind. ᛗᛁᛟᛚᚾᛁᚱPants Tell me all about it. 00:05, 19 July 2017 (UTC)
I totally understand. It is difficult on Wikipedia to not feel like every comment on your edits is an indictment. And for my part, when I saw the three links above it appeared to be edit warring pretty cut and dry. I am glad that you helped me get to the bottom of things so that I knew I could trust you with the permission. Enjoy your editing! Malinaccier (talk) 00:15, 19 July 2017 (UTC)

Àngel Guimerà[edit]

Hi. Thanks for the protection. Would you mind to revert to the previous version of the IP edit wars? The IP manipulated some sourced information. I know what Transporterman said about accents (it seems reasonable), but the IP manipulated too some information of the note and also the bolded spanish form of the name. Manuchansu (talk) 18:49, 4 August 2017 (UTC)

@Manuchansu: Hi! Which version are you wanting to restore? I am not going to "pick a side" by reverting one side or another's edits, but if there is something that must be changed to be compliant with Wikipedia policy or style conventions, I can make that change. Thanks, Malinaccier (talk) 19:28, 4 August 2017 (UTC)
Of course not Malinaccier. Well, that's exactly ("pick a side") what the IP did, because he (or she) knew very well what he/she was doing. As you can see, at the entrance the IP has removed the bold of the spanish name; as you can see on the talk (I mean my first statement), that was his given name and it is currently used by many sources or authorities. Later, on the notes section (which I created to reflect the complexity of the case), the IP manipulated the original «Born as Ángel Guimerá y Jorge, which used by most of Spanish sources» to «Born as Ángel Guimerá y Jorge, before the Catalan spelling normalization of Pompeu Fabra». The rest are changes about the accent, but I agree with TransporterMan criteria. Manuchansu (talk) 19:56, 4 August 2017 (UTC)
@Yeza: @Unapersona: As @Leptictidium: said, this version (the version of the page before any of us touched it) is the logical starting point for the discussion.--Andiport (talk) 20:06, 4 August 2017 (UTC)
It looks like additional sourced material has been changed since the 14th of June (comparison). Do you still want me to go back? Malinaccier (talk) 20:12, 4 August 2017 (UTC)
Sourced material has been added by both sides in the debate (initially by me, then that was replaced with different material by Manuchansu). That's why I agree with Andiport that the starting point should be the version right before either Manuchansu or I touched the article.--Leptictidium (mt) 20:16, 4 August 2017 (UTC)
That okay with you, @Manuchansu:? Malinaccier (talk) 20:24, 4 August 2017 (UTC)
No, that's not correct. Leptictidium added non-neutral sources, deleting and manipulating other information with his change. I have provided a compendium of sources from national libraries and literary authorities (as the Library of Congres), so there is no comparison. For two weeks he has only asked for one thing: to return the article to the previous version, but he has not rebuffed all the academic sources that I have provided or have given strong arguments.
The argument of Leptictidium and other users coming from ca:wiki (which casually they have little edits in en:wiki) is to return to the original edition, because they seem to want to remove certain facts from this person. But it's difficult to believe the previous manichaean and manipulated version of the article when Biblioteca Nacional de España (1) and the Bibliotheque nationale de France (2) catalog him as «Ángel Gimerá y Jorge» or just «Ángel Guimerá», the Library of Congress (3) and the National Library of Australia (4) catalog him as «Angel Gimerá». Even the Encyclopaedia Britannica recognized him as "Ángel Guimerá" (5).
So, Malinaccier, I understang your point, but in this case...if the previous version is recovered, that will be to recognise as good all for what the other part has fought. Having the article locked and under control, in 10 years you will not see that these users have interest in this biography, except to keep the version according to a certain point of view. Manuchansu (talk) 20:54, 4 August 2017 (UTC)

Okay everyone, let's take this discussion to the article's talk page. I am not going to make a change to the page that is not supported by a broad consensus. Is there a way you can reach a compromise? Malinaccier (talk) 20:58, 4 August 2017 (UTC)

I agree with taking the discussion to the talk page.--Leptictidium (mt) 08:09, 5 August 2017 (UTC)
Malinaccier, precisely the changes of the IP that I have indicated to you are not sustained under any consensus...precisely the person which edited under IP did in that way to be able to introduce changes knowing the problems of this article. Anyway it's ok, I accept your statement. Manuchansu (talk) 21:02, 4 August 2017 (UTC)

Relisting AfDs[edit]

Please review WP:NOQUORUM before relisting more AfDs. This is in reference to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Gareth Roberts (ice hockey). ~ Rob13Talk 17:53, 6 August 2017 (UTC)

Thanks, I am aware of the "no quorum" close and in some cases I will close discussions as a "soft delete." Depending on the case I will relist if I think the discussion could benefit from more participation. This is a judgment call and I expect different administrators have different "styles" and thoughts when it comes to this procedure. Apparently both SoWhy and I both felt that more attention would bring clarity to the discussion while you did not. Malinaccier (talk) 18:19, 6 August 2017 (UTC)
SoWhy previously had a misunderstanding regarding whether a single !delete vote in addition to the nominating statement prevents NOQUORUM from applying. If you believe the nomination is likely to be controversial, you're welcome to relist, of course, but you should explain why it is controversial. Note that NOQUORUM received an update recently that requires admins to treat these like PRODs (see this RfC). That can mean relisting (equivalent to de-prodding) if you feel processing the PROD is inappropriate, but this does require a rationale. ~ Rob13Talk 14:46, 7 August 2017 (UTC)
@BU Rob13: Thanks for the link to the RFC; I understand the history of the policy better now! Malinaccier (talk) 17:20, 7 August 2017 (UTC)

Question Regarding BLP Images[edit]

Hi there - you recently responded to my request for revert rights, and given that my list of known contacts for help is relatively small, I was hoping you could help point me in the right direction regarding a recent edit. After reverting page-blanking vandalism on the Anna Faris page yesterday, and placing it on my watchlist, I have noticed that the primary image used was changed by an anonymous user. I've read over various guidelines (WP:MUG) regarding images, however, the one used there does not apply.

However, it is my personal opinion that the new image used is of lower quality than the previous one... what steps would you recommend I take in the future with issues such as this? Would my judgement in this case (lower quality image) be correct, and therefore it should be undone?

Thanks for taking the time --Hunterm267Talk 18:21, 8 August 2017 (UTC)

@Hunterm267: Sure, I think the previous image is more flattering. There is nothing wrong with using the "undo" button and explaining in your edit summary that you liked the first image better. In this case, though, you could always move the new image down into the article text somewhere and restoring the infobox image. This page describes a perspective that might be useful to your understanding. Malinaccier (talk) 18:27, 8 August 2017 (UTC)
I appreciate your reply! Most of the edits/undos I have made thus far have been ones that I consider to be obvious - that is, almost undeniably necessary. Working to become more comfortable in being BOLD is my next goal, and I appreciate your confirming that my intention in this case was correct. --Hunterm267Talk 18:32, 8 August 2017 (UTC)
And the thing is that the same anonymous editor (or somebody else) might come back and revert you again. I have learned through the years on Wikipedia not to get too attached to any one version of an article. It will be changed again soon! Stay in touch as you have more questions. Malinaccier (talk) 18:34, 8 August 2017 (UTC)

Casablanca2017 username[edit]

@Malinaccier: there is a ceiling fan company called Casablanca, and that is what I thought this account was named after. Sorry about the misunderstanding. Cold and Spicy 00:03, 16 August 2017 (UTC)

@Coldandspicy: No worries! There is also a city named Casablanca as well as a really old movie Casablanca (film). When evaluating whether an account's username represents a company it can be useful to look at the user's edits. A hypothetical User:Chipotle might represent the Chipotle Mexican Grill or the person may just like Chipotle peppers. If they are editing promotionally on the restaurant's article, that is a much more clear sign. Malinaccier (talk) 00:09, 16 August 2017 (UTC)

Ruh roh![edit]

I edited the Henrik Steffens Professor article and made it a redirect to Henrik Steffens, and noticed right afterwards that you declined the speedy tag stating that these are two entirely different things. I just wanted to leave you a message to let you know and apologize for the goof :-). I didn't mean to step on your toes and didn't realize that you declined the speedy before I made the change. Please feel free to revert my edit without the need for my approval; I trust your better judgment here :-). If you have questions or need anything, please let me know and I'll be happy to help. Cheers -- ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 01:13, 16 August 2017 (UTC)

@Oshwah: I actually tried to block Kjelltyrid right after you did, so it looks like we were on a similar track :). The professorship is a different topic than the person it is named after, so I do not think it should be deleted per WP:A10. I don't think it should be speedily deleted based on notability alone either, though I do think an AFD would inevitably result in a "delete" or a "redirect". My thought was to nominate the article for an AFD to give Kjelltyrid the chance to make an argument for notability (though I do think it is heading for a redirect). Maybe I am being too charitable. What do you think? Might as well notify Alex Shih who protected the page :). Malinaccier (talk) 01:23, 16 August 2017 (UTC)
That sounds perfectly fine to me! I thought they sounded similar, so I just made that article into a redirect. Feel free to undo and proceed with the PROD or AFD tagging, and thanks for getting back to me :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 01:30, 16 August 2017 (UTC)

Hi Malinaccier, I would like to tell you about a user that I am having a hard time with. His (or her, idk) name is Quinton Feldberg. I keep asking Quinton questions, but he (or she, I'm just going to assume she) either keeps ignoring me or keeps saying "I already answered that question.". Would you please talk to her and tell her to treat me with a little bit more respect? Thank you. First of all, I don't have holistic view of Wikipedia, so my inquiry might be quite silly to you, but please understand that I am learning Wikipedia continuously.

2)The inquiry ofWP:CRYSTALBALL, Korean reunification is acceptable for Wikipedia users, As the topic #1 above, it is discovered existence of signed Initial Peace Treaty between U.S. and North Korea via Agreed Framework, can it be considered WP:CRYSTALBALL be removed  ?

3) Regarding the changing name of the topic with some feedback of other users, Could you please let me know your opinion whether one of these be suit to Wikipedia?

  • Diplomacy of U.S. to North Korea nuclear issue
  • Options of U.S. to North Korea missile tests

I believe that it would be hugely favorable for us to have one of the topics above on Wikipedia. There are several topics about North Korea missile tests & crisis on Wikipedia, but as far as I know, there is no space for the summarized advice or opinions from the global experts on this topic.

  • Only for within the latest 24 hours, It is easy to find more than 50 reliable news and opinion articles about North Korea crisis, but it is difficult to see it all.

As Wikipedia is one of the primary live Global Encyclopedia on Internet, it would be advantageous to have room for subject above on Wikipedia,

(Please note, these inquiry contains some of my AfD comment on the article.) Goodtiming8871 (talk) 05:47, 11 September 2017 (UTC)

Hi Goodtiming8871. I will try to answer your questions:
  1. A content fork is splitting a long article into smaller sub-articles. Examples of appropriate sub-articles are given here. The sub-articles must be written from a neutral point of view and their subjects must also have received significant coverage from independent sources.
  2. Yes, if the Peace Treaty with North Korea article was written more about previous attempts at a peace treaty and less about future problems and challenges then most people would not view WP:CRYSTAL as a problem.
  3. Is there a reason that these topics should not go in 2017 North Korea crisis#Reactions? I agree that the US response to North Korea's missile tests are receiving significant coverage in the media, but why not just include these in the main article?
Hopefully these have given you things to think about. Thanks for editing on Wikipedia--we appreciate your efforts! Malinaccier (talk) 14:48, 11 September 2017 (UTC)

Dear Malinaccier, Thank you for your wise guide for my inquiry. I can understand and agree with your point, and it is reasonable and the best position at the current global circumstance, From my understanding it comes from your more than ten years invaluable experience on Wikipedia. (I think I should pay for your precious advice ) ...As I am still novice user on Wikipedia, and don't have a comprehensive view, Please let me know your opinion for the examples of the proposed actions below.

Option 2 sounds good to me, since the current article needs some editing for style. It currently has too much original analysis, but with a little bit of work would go well in 2017 North Korea crisis#Reactions as you pointed out. Malinaccier (talk) 15:50, 12 September 2017 (UTC)

Dear Malinaccier, Thank you for your feedback. Regarding the topic Peace_Treaty_with_North_Korea, before particular event happen, can it redirect to subject of the item to 2017 North Korea crisis#Reactions?

From my understanding, the deletion of the subject means: it does not restrict the redirect it to other related Wikipedia article as an interim solution, and this topic can be restored on Wikipedia if there is another official suggestion on peace treaty between USA(or U.N) and North Korea, As one of the people who wants to see the diplomatic solution, I believe that it is beneficial to have a space of the summarized the article of all options about North Korea issues. Goodtiming8871 (talk) 01:00, 18 September 2017 (UTC)

Hi, I do think a redirect would be appropriate. Let me just make sure that the closing administrator @Ritchie333: agrees. As for recreating the article: based on the Articles for Deletion discussion, if there was an official peace treaty suggestion then it could be recreated (so long as the tone was improved as well!), but there would need to be zero speculation about this treaty. Malinaccier (talk) 13:11, 18 September 2017 (UTC)
You can make a redirect provided it does not meet the criteria to raise a deletion discussion, which it probably won't. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 13:27, 18 September 2017 (UTC)
Dear User:Malinaccier, User:Ritchie333,

Thank you for your prompt response, I would redirect the topic to the relevant current Wikipedia topic. => 2017 North Korea crisis#Reactions
Regarding the previous article "Peace treaty with North Korea", Can you please move it to the draft: space? (until there is an official peace treaty suggestion in the future)
I would like to place some of the useful articles to Wikipedia article (example: add the chart on the subject of Agreed Framework ) for the benefit of Wikipedia public. Goodtiming8871 (talk) 01:23, 19 September 2017 (UTC)

@Goodtiming8871: Please see Draft:Peace treaty with North Korea :). Malinaccier (talk) 13:25, 19 September 2017 (UTC)

Please help! Are you willing to provide copies of my deleted articles?[edit]

Hi Malinaccier, very nice to meet you. Well my situation is quite messy and odd. Basically, I've been struggling to write articles using one account, so I created new multiple ones to do it instead. The administrators then accused me of creating sock puppets and webhost abuse (the latter is absolutely nonsense, if you care you can do further reading here). They deleted all of my drafts from all of these accounts and I really need them back. I’ve spent more than a year writing them. Please help Malinaccier! I’m waiting patiently for your reply. Thank you... Beyoncetan (talk) 22:20, 28 September 2017 (UTC)

Sorry for the delay--I was travelling! Did you ask the administrators who deleted the articles if they could provide you with copies? Malinaccier (talk) 16:30, 2 October 2017 (UTC)

userRightsManager[edit]

It has come to my attention that the instructions I created at User:MusikAnimal/userRightsManager were incorrect. I'm now fixing it for everyone who set it up improperly. The importScript code should have gone in Special:MyPage/common.js and not Special:MyPage/userRightsManager.js (whoops!). When you click on "assign permissions" at WP:PERM the script should now be working. Sorry for the mistake... and hope it's OK that I've added this for you MusikAnimal talk 20:01, 21 October 2017 (UTC)

ANI Experiences survey[edit]

The Wikimedia Foundation Community health initiative (led by the Safety and Support and Anti-Harassment Tools team) is conducting a survey for en.wikipedia contributors on their experience and satisfaction level with the Administrator’s Noticeboard/Incidents. This survey will be integral to gathering information about how this noticeboard works - which problems it deals with well, and which problems it struggles with.

The survey should take 10-20 minutes to answer, and your individual responses will not be made public. The survey is delivered through Google Forms. The privacy policy for the survey describes how and when Wikimedia collects, uses, and shares the information we receive from survey participants and can be found here:

If you would like to take this survey, please sign up on this page, and a link for the survey will be mailed to you via Special:Emailuser.

Miscellaneous

  • Over the last few months, several users have reported backlogs that require administrator attention at WP:ANI, with the most common backlogs showing up on WP:SPI, WP:AIV and WP:RFPP. It is requested that all administrators take some time during this month to help clear backlogs wherever possible. It should be noted that AIV reports are not always valid; however, they still need to be cleared, which may include needing to remind users on what qualifies as vandalism.

User:Pocketthis[edit]

Hi Malinaccier. You've recently blocked Pocketthis for two weeks, but I think they might be back editing at DUI in California as 172.58.20.52 and 172.58.23.122. This is just a guess based on the previous edit warring and ownership issues that were affecting the article, but I haven't started an SPI or anything formal. Anyway, just asking whether you feel that some further action is needed here or if there's nothing to be concerned about. Thanks in advance. -- Marchjuly (talk) 21:36, 25 December 2017 (UTC)

172.58.20.43 has appeared to engage in edit warring, while making claims about being an attorney and referring to the article's creator in their edit sums. I'm almost positive now that this is WP:EVADE. I'm going to ask for WP:RPP to prevent any further disruption, but please advie on how to proceed with respect to the socking. -- Marchjuly (talk) 21:48, 25 December 2017 (UTC)
@Marchjuly: I am opening up a checkuser request at WP:SPI. I think you are right. Malinaccier (talk) 17:27, 26 December 2017 (UTC)

ClueBot NG[edit]

It appears that, on your views of past edits by Harry231001, that ClueBot NG has made yet another mistake - I'm not sure how the addition of current jobs next to their current team names is automatically marked as vandalism... e.g. Ryan Lowe was changed by Harry231001 ANN scored at 0.85330, the score should not really be that high to be honest.
