San Francisco Wiknic 2012[edit]

San Francisco Wiknic at Golden Gate Park
You are invited to the second Great American Wikinic taking place in Golden Gate Park, in San Francisco, on Saturday, June 23, 2012. Congratulations[edit]

Congratulations on your OCLC internship! I'm a librarian and a GLAM-Wiki Outreach Volunteer; if I can be of any assistance in your work I would be very happy to participate. Best of luck this summer! -McGhiever (talk) 14:58, 10 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks so much for the message. I'm basically at the point where I'm still figuring out which projects to focus on. There are two sides to my interests. The first is technology, and that will probably have something to do with incorporating Authority Control from OCLC into WP. If you want to be part of those discussions add yourself to User:Maximiliankleinoclc/Contactlist And the second is Library outreach, in which case the tasks that need to be done are to portalize outreach:Wikipedia Loves Libraries (specifically migrating the content from the "other pages" section and redirecting to a central location). And if you've got the gusto you can attend and help promote wm2012:Wikipedia Loves Libraries. Cheers Maximiliankleinoclc (talk) 03:07, 12 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

VIAF and LCNAF[edit]

Hi Max, this is Peter (FeanorStar7). I thought I would leave a message on your talk page; it was getting difficult to edit the village pump page.

I don't use VIAF all that much at work; usually just for foreign names if there is a conflict (which is rare). So I guess I can't really answer your question all that easily. Apologies.

I did want to mention that if you are going to be in DC for Wikimania; it would be great to meet you and talk more about authority control. I don't think I will be able to break away from work to go to Wikimania; but maybe we could meet separately if you are available. Let me know. Best regards, Peter--FeanorStar7 (talk) 23:31, 22 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Peter I'd be delighted to meet with you at LC outside of Wikimania. I believe I'm already in contact with some people at LC (Kathryn I think) to meet at LC because they are unavailable. Anyway shoot me an email kleinm at oclc dot org and I'll be glad to organize. Maximiliankleinoclc (talk) 00:06, 23 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

VIAF and Wikipedia[edit]

Hi Max, regarding VIAF-integration and your RFC, could you please check this edit of yours? Some words seem to have been lost before saving the edit. Thanks -- Make (talk) 10:49, 9 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

OCLC category[edit]

Hi Max, from a librarian and an OCLC intern from last summer. I recently created Category:Online Computer Library Center and populated it with a few OCLC products, affiliate networks, and Fred Kilgour. I'm not sure what sort of WP:COI restrictions you're working under, but I suspect you could find a few more pages for the category; at any rate, you probably want to be aware of it. Looking forward to the webinar! --BDD (talk) 15:20, 10 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I do have a COI but I don't think adding to a category is terrible. That said I think there is another Grad-school intern that is working on OCLC related things to avoid COI, so I'll pass this information along. Thanks.

Unconference[edit]

I mentioned your participation Sunday on the wikisource-l list, and I wanted to take the opportunity to invite to join the list, if you haven't already. It is a very low traffic list and one of more inclusive places for WS discussion wrt multiple language communities.BirgitteSB 03:15, 17 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks Bridgette, I actually did sign up almost immediately after recommendation. I'm glad that you're following up though. Thanks Maximiliankleinoclc (talk) 06:48, 17 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Webinar[edit]

Hi again Max, I didn't check my calendar well enough; I'm going to be out of town on the day of the webinar. Do you have any plans to release a recording afterward? Thanks, BDD (talk) 16:03, 24 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, the Webinar will be recorded, and probably that recording will be publicized in the same channels as webinar by OCLC. Thanks for your interest. Maximilianklein (talk) 17:20, 24 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Better link for the WiR program[edit]

At http://outreach.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikipedian_in_Residence I've linked the OCLC annoucement, but don't we have any Wiki page for this project? Could you add the link to it and other relevant pages there? --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 20:28, 12 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Ok I updated the outreach WiR page to link to the authority control integration project page that I'm working on. Thanks for making me aware of this. Maximiliankleinoclc (talk) 16:23, 13 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hacked![edit]

hey Max,

I received a direct message from your account in Twitter posting a link which my spam blockers say is a phising site, so it sounds like you've been hacked. -- kosboot (talk) 21:55, 28 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for notifying me. I've cleared this up now. Maximilianklein (talk) 17:11, 1 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Question about OCLC searches[edit]

Hi Max. First let me thank you for all your hours spent volunteering at Wikipedia. It's great that we have people like you improving our content and helping where they can.

I have a question about OCLC searches. I use the OCLC and ISSN numbers when referencing articles, so I often do seaches at worldcat.org to find that information. Some search engines, like Google, will allow one to put search terms in quotes to help narrow the results. For example "George Washington" Deleware as oppsed to George Washington Deleware. I've tried that with search at WorldCat, but it didn't seem to work. Do you have any tips or tricks you could give me on searching the OCLC database? Anything that would help me search more effectively? Thanks for the help. 64.40.54.39 (talk) 16:47, 9 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the Kind words. Have you tried using WorldCat's advanced search? Maximilianklein (talk) 00:15, 10 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Oops, somehow I missed that. Thanks. 64.40.54.49 (talk) 15:17, 10 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

One more question if you don't mind. I occasionally run across items that appear to be duplicates, like these two;

  • DreamWatch (a.k.a. DWB. Dreamwatch bulletin), ISSN 1356-482X, OCLC 225907941
  • DWB : Dreamwatch bulletin, ISSN 1351-2471, OCLC 500077966

The first one, ISSN 1356-482X, lists an English and a French version. The second one, ISSN 1351-2471, lists 2 English versions both being the OCLC 225907941 and the OCLC 500077966. Sorry, that's probably somewhat confusing. Anyhoo, I was wondering if they are in fact the same periodical. If so, is one of the ISSN/OCLC numbers "more correct" than the other? Thanks for the help. 64.40.54.49 (talk) 15:17, 10 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

If they're different language versons then they are the same 'expression', but different 'manifestations', OCLC numbers are supposed to identify 'manifestations' so there is a data error here. It's impoissible to say which is "more correct" in this instance in my opinion. Thanks Maximilianklein (talk) 18:23, 10 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, I have a much better understanding now. I really appreciate your help with this. Kind regards. 64.40.54.100 (talk) 14:39, 11 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Gday MK. Someone at enWS said that I should prod you to a conversation that I started there. — billinghurst sDrewth 10:35, 1 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Wikimedia LGBT[edit]

I just wanted to bring Wikimedia LGBT, a proposed user group and thematic organization that promotes the development of content on Wikimedia projects which is of interest to LGBT communities, to your attention. I am sure you are so busy with your current projects, but I hope you might be able to direct people to this group if they are interested in LGBT content in any way. Of course, you are also more than welcome to indicate your interest/support, if you wish. Hopefully we can get some LGBT-related GLAM/Education/etc. projects up and running in the near future. Best, --Another Believer (Talk) 20:16, 8 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

VIAF WIR[edit]

Hi, are you still active as WIR at VIAF? If not please update outreach:Wikipedian in Residence. If yes, let's talk! I'm currently WIR at BEIC and they work with OCLC as well. --Federico Leva (BEIC) (talk) 15:31, 24 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
