Lascars[edit]

Hi there. I see that you're adding an estimate of 8,000 lascars in the UK prior to the 1950s to articles such as British Asian. The source that you're citing doesn't quite say this, though. It says "No more than 8,000 Indians, it has been estimated, lived in Britain before the 1950s. Even if lascars made up a considerable share...", hence suggesting that not all of the 8,000 Indians were lascars (not to mention the fact that not all lascars were Indian). Cordless Larry (talk) 10:41, 23 February 2016 (UTC)

at this time bangladesh and pakistan did not exist. in modern terms lascar refers to south asian sailors most of whom would have been from india. i feel it was necessary to put these numbers so not to mislead people into thinking they were a large presence which is what the author says. the majority of south asian sailors would have come from british india with pakistan and bangladesh not existing in the 19th century. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Menacinghat (talkcontribs) 10:47, 23 February 2016 (UTC)
I have moved your comment here to keep the conversation in one place. There are two problems with your response - the source says 8,000 Indians, not 8,000 lascars, and even if India did include Pakistan and Bangladesh at the time, there were also lascars from Somalia and Yemen. Cordless Larry (talk) 10:50, 23 February 2016 (UTC)

the majority would be from south asia and most accounts refer to south asia as opposed to yemen. most of them coming from the british raj

It is estimated 8,000 Indians (a large proportion being lascar sailors) lived in Britain permanently prior to the 1950s.

i think this is more appropriate

That's better, but what is the source for the claim that a large proportion of the 8,000 were lascars? Cordless Larry (talk) 11:07, 23 February 2016 (UTC)

the book says that there were more indians sailors than non-indian sailors. lascar just means sailor but south asian and employed by the british or other european

Yes, but what about Indians who were not sailors? The source doesn't specify what proportion of the 8,000 Indians were lascars, so I don't see the basis for claiming "a large proportion being lascar sailors". Cordless Larry (talk) 11:12, 23 February 2016 (UTC)

i will add another source

Hello again. I see that you added another source, but the page range you have cited is quite wide. Can you point me to a specific page where that author states that the majority of Indians in the UK at the time were lascars, or provide a quote from the book establishing that? Cordless Larry (talk) 18:22, 23 February 2016 (UTC)

another book called routeledge handbook of the south asian diaspora cites visram's book below. no more than 8,000 lived in britain prior to the 1950s (visram 2002) https://books.google.co.uk/books?id=-xCUAgAAQBAJ&pg=PA121&lpg=PA121&dq=8,000+indians+lascar&source=bl&ots=vJS2llQ9CL&sig=AwOxqOEAt6Rn7eVm2bADAZsj5SI&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiAqcbDzo7LAhVMXRoKHb07CQcQ6AEIPjAE#v=onepage&q=8%2C000%20indians%20lascar&f=false

But again, that talks of 8,000 Indians but doesn't say what proportion of them were lascars. Cordless Larry (talk) 19:30, 23 February 2016 (UTC)

he describes the indians in the previous sentence as being 'ship jumpers' south asians on ships

i will change it to 'some' under indian lascars

i removed most so now it's more referring to indians and less alscars

Yes, there does seem to be an implicit assumption in that source that they were mostly lascars, but frustratingly it doesn't really state that clearly. This book, by contrast, suggests that there were significant numbers (in comparison to the 8,000 estimate) of doctors and students at that time. Cordless Larry (talk) 19:40, 23 February 2016 (UTC)

it says on the book you sent the indians believed 7 thousand lived in britain in the 1930s

Yes, but it makes clear that this population included lascars and professionals such as doctors. Cordless Larry (talk) 19:45, 23 February 2016 (UTC)

Signing posts[edit]

Information icon Hello and welcome to Wikipedia. When you add content to talk pages and Wikipedia pages that have open discussion (but never when editing articles), please be sure to sign your posts. There are two ways to do this. Either:

Source for 120,000 figure[edit]

Hi there. Can I ask where you got the 120,000 figure in this edit from? It doesn't appear to be in the source you cited. Cordless Larry (talk) 14:54, 31 July 2017 (UTC)

I see you've now added a source for that. Thanks. You've also added "The population increasing to 370,000 in 1938", with three sources, but the second and third don't support the figure. Does it come from the book? If so, could you provide a quote to confirm this? Cordless Larry (talk) 21:11, 31 July 2017 (UTC)
