Tropical plants[edit]

Hello, How are you? I need your help. I thank you your help in the articles and I hope you help me again in future. I ask you: Can you find more people willing writing in tropical trees, genera and families? I ask you if you could enlarge some articles making better known this group of trees in Wikipedia, adding links to genera and families and writing information and asking people if they are interested in writing about topics as tropical trees articles, tropical forest articles or botanical or biodiversity articles. Do you know Wikipedia forums that could be interested about these type of articles? They are welcome too. I thank you very much.

I am from Spain and my mother language is not English language. Many country side areas, and Natural areas and Living beings are in Countries where population cannot collaborate with Wikipedia, but their Natural World and its highly economically valuable species are very important too in the human knowledge and developtment of the mankind. People should have information because these matters are important, not just a curiosity only. This unknow world is from Poles to ecuator, in unoccupied oceanic areas closely to Europe, in Deserts as Sahara, or whatever. But to me the main aim is to gather the abundant information disperse about living communities and living beings that have existed for millions of years because they are disappearing and in 20 years they will are not longer exist. Curritocurrito (talk) 11:41, 26 May 2012 (UTC)

  • Well I am slowly updating articles for Chinese trees. In China the threats to biodiversity certainly are formidable! Micromesistius (talk) 21:40, 26 May 2012 (UTC)

  • Hi, thank you very much by to be interested in Tropical flora. I hope in future you will write about this matter so unknow. You are right, the threats to biodiversity in China are formidable, and other Asian countries too!! I was looking for photos of genera and there are not photos neither. Best regards. Greetings, To address your questions, I have had bad experiences with the automatic taxbox not letting me include information that is easily included in a regular taxbos. Unless it has changed, at one point automatic taxboxes where intended for use with palaeontology-related articles and not recommended for other taxa. This might have been the reason that they would not accept some fields. As regards the taxonomic issues with Monotrete, FishBase is usually the accepted authority regarding species lists and I have taken to using the FishBase lists even when there is uncertainty (as in COF and IUCN) rather than trying to include all possible lists, particularly in shorter articles. If you feel that the information on the taxonomic issues is sufficiently important, feel free to put it back in. Maybe with the changes recently in the classification of these fishes it would be a germane topic. That is the great thing about Wikipedia. Also, if you ever create a new article, go ahead and create the talk page to go with it. Best wishes Divingpetrel (talk) 23:37, 12 July 2013 (UTC)

Lycodon Odishi[edit]

Hullo, I hope you don't mind my messaging you about this. But this appears to be your area of interest and expertise :) I came across this article in the papers today about a new species of snake named Lycodon odishi. Is this worth an article even though there's no mention in databases like reptarium.cz? Is the "Russian Journal of Herpetology" reputable? --Cpt.a.haddock (talk) 06:46, 28 September 2014 (UTC)

"Russian Journal of Herpetology" is fully reputable, although not quite "leading" as the article suggests. Lycodon odishi is probably just too recent to have been listed in reptarium.cz, which is updated every four months. Micromesistius (talk) 08:59, 28 September 2014 (UTC)
Thanks. Is this then worth an article now (perhaps with a caveat)? Does WP have procedures/guidelines/prerequisites for this? --Cpt.a.haddock (talk) 09:47, 28 September 2014 (UTC)
There is no clear guideline for reptiles. I would only create the article if I could get hold of the Mallik et al. article (probably one of the authors would be happy to send the pdf), or when the species is listed in reptarium.cz. Micromesistius (talk) 12:07, 28 September 2014 (UTC)
Thanks. --Cpt.a.haddock (talk) 10:00, 29 September 2014 (UTC)

Raorchestes kaikatti[edit]

Hello again, Your edit of Raorchestes kaikatti mentions Raorchestes marki by mistake. I don't have access to the linked paper to fix this. Please check. I also believe that the paper mentions that the species is named after a herpetologist named Mark Wilkinson. Please include this titbit if so. --Cpt.a.haddock (talk) 10:06, 29 September 2014 (UTC)

Thanks for spotting this mistake—now corrected. Yes, Raorchestes marki is named after Mark Wilkinson. Micromesistius (talk) 06:51, 30 September 2014 (UTC)

Concerning Extinct Species in Leiopelmatidae[edit]

Hi, thanks for the great work in Leiopelmatidae! I wanted to ask you, should we delete the mention of Notobatrachus I've hidden, or do you know of some sources that corroborate its placement within Leiopelmatidae, and not Ascaphidae?--Mr Fink (talk) 15:45, 29 January 2015 (UTC)

Looks like there is no simple answer. Lisanfos places it in Leiopelmatidae but fossilworks does not assign it to any family. It seems that there no strong consensus either that Leiopelmatidae and Ascaphidae should be treated as separate families. Maybe it is best to mention that some sources place it in Leiopelmatidae? Formal mediation has been requested[edit]

The Mediation Committee has received a request for formal mediation of the dispute relating to "Rana vs Lithobates". As an editor concerned in this dispute, you are invited to participate in the mediation. Mediation is a voluntary process which resolves a dispute over article content by facilitation, consensus-building, and compromise among the involved editors. After reviewing the request page, the formal mediation policy, and the guide to formal mediation, please indicate in the "party agreement" section whether you agree to participate. Because requests must be responded to by the Mediation Committee within seven days, please respond to the request by 21 September 2015.

Discussion relating to the mediation request is welcome at the case talk page. Thank you.
Message delivered by MediationBot (talk) on behalf of the Mediation Committee. 10:38, 14 September 2015 (UTC)

Request for mediation accepted[edit]

The request for formal mediation of the dispute concerning Rana vs Lithobates, in which you were listed as a party, has been accepted by the Mediation Committee. The case will be assigned to an active mediator within two weeks, and mediation proceedings should begin shortly thereafter. Proceedings will begin at the case information page, Wikipedia:Requests for mediation/Rana vs Lithobates, so please add this to your watchlist. Formal mediation is governed by the Mediation Committee and its Policy. The Policy, and especially the first two sections of the "Mediation" section, should be read if you have never participated in formal mediation. For a short guide to accepted cases, see the "Accepted requests" section of the Guide to formal mediation. You may also want to familiarise yourself with the internal Procedures of the Committee.

As mediation proceedings begin, be aware that formal mediation can only be successful if every participant approaches discussion in a professional and civil way, and is completely prepared to compromise. Please contact the Committee if anything is unclear.

For the Mediation Committee, TransporterMan (TALK) 13:23, 15 September 2015 (UTC)

Distribution maps[edit]

Hello! Could you please have a look at these animal distribution maps I've created and tell me if they are of acceptable quality or if it would be better if I left the task for someone experienced to work on? I made them by hand, in GIMP, so they are not perfectly accurate. Sandvich18 (talk) 19:06, 16 March 2016 (UTC)

@Sandvich18: To me the maps look very good and perfectly adequate for use in Wikipedia. I don't think the IUCN maps are perfectly accurate either as most distribution maps include a degree of expert judgement. Let me also say that I am very happy to see new a Wikipedian interested in amphibians — my warmest welcome! We are much too few. Micromesistius (talk) 22:12, 16 March 2016 (UTC)

Hi, thanks for your work so far! Can you do me a favour though and always add every entry you do to the main list here as well as the entries page, regardless if yet approved or not as that's the master list of all articles being done. It's just veyr time consuming for me to be judging the articles, trying to contribute myself and chasing up what people have done and filling it out for people each time. So if you can take care of that this would be a great help, there's some part filled out ones underneath so you just need to add country, article name and then you username. Invitation from Wikipedia Asian Month 2016[edit]

Thanks for partipating Wikipedia Asian Month last year, and I hope you enjoy it. Last year, more than 7,000 articles contribute to Wikipedia in 43 languages in Wikipedia Asian Month, making us one of the largest event on Wikipedia. We will organize this event again in upcoming November, and would like to invite you join us again.

This year, we are lowering down the standards that you only need to create 4 (Four) articles to receive a postcard (new design), and articles only need to be more than 3,000 bytes and 300 words. We are also improving our postcard sending process, e.g. making the postcards right now, and collecting the address after the event ends without waiting other languges.

Wikipedians who create the most articles on each Wikipedia will be honored as "Wikipedia Asian Ambassadors". We will send you both digital copy, and a paper copy of the Ambassador certificate.

Thank you for considering! --AddisWang (talk)

Collect your prize[edit]

Espadarana copyright concern[edit]

Some of the material you included in the above article was copied from http://www.mapress.com/zootaxa/2009/f/zt02100p097.pdf, a copyright web page. Copying text directly from a source is a copyright violation. Unfortunately, for copyright reasons, the content had to be removed. I realize it is difficult to paraphrase technical material, but an attempt must be made. Please leave a message on my talk page if you have any questions or if you think I made a mistake. — Diannaa 🍁 (talk) 14:57, 14 February 2017 (UTC)

@Diannaa: The text was not directly copied but was already paraphrased. Now it is even more so. It is difficult to know where the limit is when the technical accuracy should be maintained. Micromesistius (talk) 09:26, 18 February 2017 (UTC)
The new version is okay from a copyright point of view. Thanks for taking the time to do that. — Diannaa 🍁 (talk) 13:20, 18 February 2017 (UTC)

Changing citations[edit]

Regarding your edit/revert on Paddlefish, please see WP:CITEVAR wherein it states: Editors should not attempt to change an article's established citation style merely on the grounds of personal preference, to make it match other articles, or without first seeking consensus for the change. The arbitration committee ruled in 2006:

Wikipedia does not mandate styles in many different areas; these include (but are not limited to) American vs. British spelling, date formats, and citation style. Where Wikipedia does not mandate a specific style, editors should not attempt to convert Wikipedia to their own preferred style, nor should they edit articles for the sole purpose of converting them to their preferred style, or removing examples of, or references to, styles which they dislike.

While updates and improvements don't always require consensus, collaboration is preferred over WP:BRD. As a courtesy, please consider suggesting changes on the TP of articles that have been promoted to WP:GA or WP:FA. Also see MOS:CT regarding title case vs sentence case. WikiProject Women in Red/The World Contest[edit]

Hi. Thankyou for your participation in the challenge series or/and contests. In November The Women in Red World Contest is being held to try to produce new articles for as many countries worldwide and occupations as possible. There will be over $4000 in prizes to win, including Amazon vouchers and paid subscriptions. If this would appeal to you and you think you'd be interested in contributing new articles on women during this month for your region or wherever please sign up in the participants section. The articles done may also count towards the ongoing challenge. If you're not interested in prize money yourself but are willing to participate and raise money to buy books about women for others to use, this is also fine. Help would also be appreciated in drawing up the lists of missing articles. If you think of any missing articles please add them to the sub lists by continent at Missing articles. Thankyou, and if taking part, good luck!♦ Dr. Blofeld 17:56, 4 October 2017 (UTC)

A cookie for you![edit]

Choco chip cookie.png Thanks for requesting the move of Amazon sheep frog. I've long been meaning to start a steady trickle of RMs from clearly unhelpful vernacular name titles to scientific names. The status quo (random rare species from non-English speaking countries at vernacular names, random common species from English speaking countries at scientific names) is an utter mess. Thanks for adding to the discussion. Plantdrew (talk) 03:03, 14 October 2017 (UTC)
Thank you! I could't agree more... Micromesistius (talk) 20:01, 15 October 2017 (UTC)

Wikipedia Asian Month 2017: Invitation to Participate[edit]

Sun Wiki.svg

Hello! Last year, you signed up to participate in Wikipedia Asian Month (WAM) 2016 on the English Wikipedia. The event was an international success, with hundreds of editors creating thousands of articles on Asian topics across dozens of different language versions of Wikipedia.

I'd like to invite you to join us for Wikipedia Asian Month 2017, which once again lasts through the month of November. The goal is for users to create new articles on Asian-related content, each at least 3,000 bytes and 300 words in length. Editors who create at least four articles will receive a Wikipedia Asian Month postcard!

Also be sure to check out the Wikipedia Asian Art Month affiliate event - creating articles on Asian art topics can get you a Metropolitan Museum of Art postcard!

If you're interested, please sign up here for the English Wikipedia. If you are interested in also working on other language editions of Wikipedia, please visit the meta page to see other participating projects. If you have any questions, please visit our talk page.

Thank you!

ANI Experiences survey[edit]

Beginning on November 28, 2017, the Wikimedia Foundation Community health initiative (Safety and Support and Anti-Harassment Tools team) will be conducting a survey to en.wikipedia contributors on their experience and satisfaction level with the Administrator’s Noticeboard/Incidents. This survey will be integral to gathering information about how this noticeboard works - which problems it deals with well, and which problems it struggles with.

The survey should take 10-20 minutes to answer, and your individual responses will not be made public. The survey is delivered through Google Forms. The privacy policy for the survey describes how and when Wikimedia collects, uses, and shares the information we receive from survey participants and can be found here:

If you would like to take this survey, please sign up on this page, and a link for the survey will be mailed to you via Special:Emailuser.

Author question(s)[edit]

Hi, I'm doing some citation updating/maintenance and noticed that some time ago you changed Huiqing, G. to Gu, H. at Amji's salamander. IUCN's assessor list, however, gives Gu Huiqing, Michael Wai Neng Lau, but they are known to be inconsistent with their author presentation. And, to my untrained eye & ear, Gu does sound like more of a last name than Huiqing, so I just wanted to confirm with you before I convert the citation over to {{Cite journal}}. Thanks.   ~ Tom.Reding (talkdgaf)  00:57, 20 December 2017 (UTC)

Hi, Gu is certainly the surname (1+2 syllable names are easy, the 1-syllable part is the surname. 1+1 syllable names can be tricky). IUCN seems to write most Chinese names in the Chinese style, i.e. the surname first, something that Polbot did not consider when auto-creating the articles. Cheers, Micromesistius (talk) 07:54, 20 December 2017 (UTC)
Ah, that makes sense. Could you provide any other examples? I may have inadvertently botched some up, but I'm trying to be careful. What about Yuan Zhigang? (Annam tree frog)   ~ Tom.Reding (talkdgaf)  12:48, 20 December 2017 (UTC)
The same, Yuan is the surname. For mainland Chinese, IUCN appears to have been consistent in writing the surname first. I cannot recall any examples of mainlanders with Anglicized names (like Michael Wai Neng Lau, from Hong Kong). With any Chinese name with 1+2 or 2+1 syllable pattern, it is safe to assume that the 1-syllable part is the surname. Cheers, Micromesistius (talk) 13:21, 20 December 2017 (UTC)
(I'll limit these to no more than 1 per day...) What about Mumpuni? I've seen this at the end of many author strings, and following several different bionomial (human) names. On WP I've never seen it mixed in with another name; it's always a separate |author=, and I have been treating it as such.   ~ Tom.Reding (talkdgaf)  15:21, 21 December 2017 (UTC)
No problem whatsoever, and many thanks for your great efforts with IUCN citations, very helpful! Here I do not know for sure but I believe it is an Indonesian name. They sometimes have only one name. Cheers, Micromesistius (talk) 15:56, 21 December 2017 (UTC)
What about Xie Feng? (1+1 syllable; Central Asiatic frog) Also, I've noticed that Sergio Potsch de Carvallho-e-Silva is sometimes given by the IUCN with 1 "L" in Carvalho, and sometimes with 2. I haven't found out which one is correct yet, though.   ~ Tom.Reding (talkdgaf)  12:34, 22 December 2017 (UTC)
Xie is the surname (in this case, one has either to know it from other sources, or try to deduce from the context). Carvalho-e-Silva/Carvallho-e-Silva: In all publications that I have in my database from him, the spelling is "Carvalho-e-Silva". Cheers, Micromesistius (talk) 13:00, 22 December 2017 (UTC)
Do you know if de Oliveira, M.M. de should be displayed as de Oliveira, M.M., or Oliveira, M.M. de, or perhaps just Oliveira, M.M.? (Bare-eared squirrel monkey; 41538)   ~ Tom.Reding (talkdgaf)  22:34, 25 December 2017 (UTC)
It looks like to me that there is no fully standard way of dealing with "de" in Portuguese names. Perhaps the best way is to try to follow the style they have used in their own publications? For example in my literature database I have "Fábio P. de Sá" who always treats "de Sá" as his surname, but it seems that most other people leave "de" out when their name is not written in full. Micromesistius (talk) 07:02, 26 December 2017 (UTC)

────────────────────── Probably just a typo, but what do you think about Oommen V. Oommen?   ~ Tom.Reding (talkdgaf)  00:09, 13 January 2018 (UTC)
