GA nominations[edit]

Hello, I noticed that you have a few articles nominated at WP:GAN. If you could review one or more good article nominations to help reduce the backlog and waiting time, it would be greatly appreciated. Help and advice on how to do so is available at Wikipedia:Reviewing good articles, and you can ask for the help of a GAN mentor, if you wish. Thanks, GaryColemanFan (talk) 20:21, 13 October 2008 (UTC)

Not a problem. If you have a chance, it's great. If not, you're certainly helping Wikipedia by improving and nominating the articles. I hope my message didn't sound critical, as I've seen the articles you've expanded, and you're definitely doing a great job. Best wishes, GaryColemanFan (talk) 20:28, 13 October 2008 (UTC)

NY 28N FAC[edit]

Greetings. I haven't been able to be as active as I used to be but I still check in on my watchlist almost daily and saw what's going on with 28N and I can't thank you enough for all your work (you, and the others) on the article as it's being improved during the FAC. Tonight I read through it, it's the first FAC discussion that I've ever looked at. 28N is one of many NYSR route articles I originated, and it's the one that I got off to the best start of any I ever did - I don't think it was ever classified as a stub. I'm proud to know that something I started has progressed as well as it has, and wish I could be able to devote enough time if only my workload and other obligations gave me some time. Perhaps I can drive up on the weekend and get a couple more photographs? Please let me know what I can do that would most constructive and useful. And after 28N, my desire would be to work on NY 30A since that was my very first work. Fwgoebel (talk) 02:52, 15 October 2008 (UTC)

Do you think we should create awards like {{The 100 DYK Medal}} and have a page like WP:DYKLIST for GAs?--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTM) 14:19, 27 October 2008 (UTC)

To the best of my knowledge, you and I have the most GA credits. I expect that you will surpass me given your rate of production. If you want to create a page named something like WP:GALIST there are two ways to go and I wanted feedback from someone else who would care. Either we do a count of current GAs and have a WP:GALIST like WP:DYKLIST or we include all delisted GAs and GAs promoted to WP:FC and have icons like WP:WBFAN. My count would go up a bit by the latter due to promotions, but I am not sure what is appropriate. The latter would be difficult to maintain by hand (FA uses a bot I think).--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTM) 15:44, 27 October 2008 (UTC)

Hello re.[edit]

I don't think we have, it's nice to meet you (to the extent that you can over the internet). I'll gladly work on those articles once I finish a request made by Yellow Evan for Tropical Storm Lidia of the 2005 Pacific hurricane season. I'll notify you when I begin working on the articles. I'll put them in a sandbox this time so you can work on them too if you desire. :) Cyclonebiskit (talk) 22:16, 29 October 2008 (UTC)

I'm working on the Beryl article now. Since I'm not good with impact, once I finish the MH section and fix up the naming and statistics section, I'll leave the rest to you. Cyclonebiskit (talk) 21:41, 30 October 2008 (UTC)
I think that those two articles are almost ready for GA, they just need a good copy-edit. For Chris, I might be able to add some more to the MH, but it'll take a while before I can work on it. Besides Beryl and Ernesto, I have three other articles inline to be worked on/created. Cyclonebiskit (talk) 21:48, 30 October 2008 (UTC)
1968-1990 are hard because they do not supply the public advisories, which means the MH is going to be rather short compared to what I normally like to have... I just need a bit of a break from that since I couldn't get much out of Beryl to do one that I could. I'll start working on it again soon. P.S. lets see if I can prove Hink wrong and make a GA out of Ernesto :) (not in mean way though). Cyclonebiskit (talk) 15:33, 1 November 2008 (UTC)

I've expanded TS Beryl to the extent that I can. I'll leave the impact part to you. Cyclonebiskit (talk) 16:16, 1 November 2008 (UTC)

GEOBIA Deletion - Please put back[edit]

Dear Mitchazenia,

My Name is Dr Geoff Hay, I am the conference chair for GEOBIA 2008 ( and along with my Post-Doctoral fellow (Guillermo Castilla) was responsible for initially building the OBIA and GEOBIA wiki's ( that are running on the University of Calgary website. Please be advised that I copied materials from the Geobia website and UofC wiki's and pasted brief components of them on the GEOBIA wikipedia site so that there would be a brief introduction and link between the worldwide wikipedia site, and the site I run through the university of Calgary. There is no copyright infringement because I wrote the material. Please note that part of it has also recently been published in a book chapter I wrote, and a book I co-edited:

Hay, G. J., and G. Castilla.2008. Geographic Object-Based Image Analysis (GEOBIA): A new name for a new discipline? In: Object-Based Image Analysis – spatial concepts for knowledge-driven remote sensing applications. Eds: T. Blaschke, S. Lang, G. J. Hay. Springer-Verlag. Chapter 1.4, pp. 81- 92.

Since I am the author of this material, I would ask that you please reinstate the GEOBIA wikipedia page that you appear to have removed. If you have any concerns I can be reached at the addresses below.

NTWW and podcasts and stuff[edit]

Hey Mitch.. Once upon a time Awadewit and I organized a podcast about copyediting, which was eventually released as part of the NTWW series. We're planning to do another one, since various folks indicated that whatever we put together would be welcome under the NTWW banner. But now I see that the project is changing/ending/something. So I wonder: What do you recommend we do with the podcast we plan to record this weekend? If NTWW is going to Meta (and presumably trying to appeal to a wider audience than just the English Wikipedia), should we talk to the Wikipedia Weekly folks? Thanks in advance for your thoughts. Scartol • Tok 23:31, 5 November 2008 (UTC)

Hi, noticed your question. WikiVoices remains dedicated to serving the English Wikipedia community. We'd be glad to host your proposed episode. Just because our umbrella got a little wider doesn't mean there's any hole in the center. :) Best, DurovaCharge! 23:34, 5 November 2008 (UTC)

Hamilton County map[edit]

Hamilton County N.Y.svg

Please check this map for any mistakes. I think I got the hamlet/town/village thing down... I marked hamlets with the "unincorporated place" dot-with-slash. For the county seat I made the dot the size of the smallest incorporated city dot so it'd fit in the diamond better. Kinda silly having an unincorporated place as a county seat...I'm pretty sure that'd be illegal here. :) —Scott5114 [EXACT CHANGE ONLY] 08:08, 10 November 2008 (UTC)

Hiya Mitch,

  • There really is no cabal at FAC. I voted in favor of RCC, forex, after Opposing once or perhaps twice (I forget) before. Nancy said there's no cabal. She also said the RCC article has been improved every step of the way, after every failed FAC... Mitch, tell me, please, if improvement isn't "help", then what is help? Can you offer a better definiton of "help" than "helping someone improve"?
  • I hope you don't believe that a painless pat on the back, a gold star, a smiley face and a "PASS FA" is "help". If so, then I am deeply sorry to disillusion you. Passing someone's FAC when it doesn't deserve to Pass is not help— it is hurting the FA process, hurting Wikipedia, and hurting the editor who worked on an nominated the article. It is teaching the nominator that the world never expects performance, but always expects merely participation. That is a perfectly good and proper lesson for toddlers and tykes, to help them build self-confidence, since they are physically and mentally unable to perform at anything resembling a high level—but for adults who are perfectly capable of performing at excellent standards, that is a very unhelpful and counterproductive lesson to learn.
  • Please do let me know if you have further comments or questions. Ling.Nut (talkWP:3IAR) 02:09, 15 November 2008 (UTC)
  • Mitch, I have to agree with Ling.Nut. I wouldn't participate at FAC if I thought there was a cabal. The most frequent reviewers are honest as far as I know - they are interested in the promotion of quality articles. If you listen to the most recent podcast Scartol and I did for NTWW, you'll hear both Scartol and Moni3 talking about how articles they worked on were failed at GAN and FAC and how productive those failures were. I was integral to both of those failures and yet Scartol and Moni3 and I are the best of buds - we are all working to produce a good encyclopedia and sometimes that means telling your friends "this article is not quite up to snuff yet". I hope that I have built a reputation for candid reviewing at FAC - I don't "support" articles just because they were nominated by my friends or by people in power (I opposed both Raul654's and SandyGeorgia's most recent nominations, for example). I "support" articles that I believe meet the criteria and I expect the same from other reviewers. Awadewit (talk) 05:25, 15 November 2008 (UTC)

Request for clarification[edit]

Hi, Mitch. On Ling.Nut's talk page, you said: "Another part of the problem is a personal bias from the FAC Delegate Director. As I much as I respect her, Sandy is way too biased in her job, often making really bad decisions." I don't want to divert attention at WT:FAC that has now been focused on resolving the festering concerns about crit. 1b of WP:WIAFA, or the separate issues at Ling.Nut's talk page about the Mark Speight FAC, so I was hoping that here, separately, you could give me some examples of what you consider to be my "really bad decisions" and "personal bias" so that I can better understand your concern and how to improve. I'll follow here, regards, SandyGeorgia (Talk) 04:04, 16 November 2008 (UTC)

First off, I'm really sorry if you took it the wrong way. Later, after I posted that, I told another user that we could use at least a 2nd delegate director. I just feel that someone running FAC should not be nominating for it either. I don't wanna take away what you probably do best, but you are better off running FAC, not contributing to it. The main example is Samuel Johnson, which would have passed faster, had you not nominated it (you of course would earn the FA in still). I believe, personally that Raul is too busy and cannot handle the page. This would mean everything would be on your time. The personal thing is, I would suggest letting others nominate and you go ahead and control what goes on. I would say the same for FT, FP, FL, FS and so on. You have a great position. Also, I will retract my biasness statement towards you, as I wrote it an a rant mood, but I think things need to be followed better at FAC, and most of the power is yours :). You could be the one that makes FAC a really good place to go to. I hope this clarifies things.Mitch32(UP) 04:12, 16 November 2008 (UTC)
I'll copy your response to here because I don't like to split conversations. Sorry if this is messed up: I was hoping we could have a consolidated conversation, but I've already lost one post to an edit conflict.
  • I don't want to take anything wrong, and I hope I didn't. What do you think I took the wrong way? I usually try to ask for clarification just so I'm sure I don't take things the wrong way, and to make sure I understand.
  • On Samuel Johnson, you might not have fully read that very long discussion or the talk page. I specifically, several times, before the FAC was initiated asked that my name not be added to that nomination. I was stridently opposed to my name being on the nom, I knew it wasn't a good idea, I knew it would affect the FAC, but my name was added without my approval. Ottava Rima did it in all good faith, as I had been watching the article since the day I joined Wiki and he wanted to recognize my contributions, but it was a Big Mistake to put my name on it, and not a decision that I supported. My contributions to the article were minimal, and like you, I did not think my name should be on any nom at FAC. However, if I had deleted my name after Ottava Rima added it over my objections, that would have given the appearance that I didn't support the article's candidacy, so I had to leave my name there and live with it, for the good of the article and the co-nominators
  • Can you tell me what sort of things you think I need to follow better ? SandyGeorgia (Talk) 04:25, 16 November 2008 (UTC)
Well, ok, I do believe that not nominating is the right thing to do, but I know others violate it on other projects. (Will finish comment in the morning).Mitch32(UP) 04:28, 16 November 2008 (UTC)

Master editor[edit]

As you rapidly overtake me, I am losing track of what is what. Do you count delisted GARs or promoted FAs and FLs in your 109 total? I am sure you will pass me soon, but remember, my total is only current GAs. I ask because I am trying to figure out if you are at the 2% mark or not?--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTM) 07:05, 16 November 2008 (UTC)

You are free to count your apples however you want. Just make sure comparisons are valid. A claim of having 2% of the current GAs should be properly stated. Also, make sure you have your count right when you pass me since I have five former GAs that I do not count as current GAs and I reduce my count when an FA is promoted.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTM) 14:54, 16 November 2008 (UTC)

Grasshopper, I have changed my infobox for clarification of the topic at issue.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTM) 16:56, 16 November 2008 (UTC)

As a quick request, it would be great if you two could help out with the reviewing. You're clearly familiar with the GA criteria, so I'm sure you'd be great. Last month's GAN backlog elimination drive brought the number of unreviewed articles from 175 down to 116, but it has already climbed back up to 173. Any help would be appreciated. lol, I gotta grab some popcorn for this Strato|sphere 13:23, 21 November 2008 (UTC)
I have no doubt it is good for the project to have people nomming articles for WP:GA regardless of involvement. It serves as a good check for whether an article is complete in some cases. It also will help us to keep abreast of whether articles have lagged increasing standards. However, to claim that you "significantly contributed" to an article is quite a stretch. FYI, here are some of the articles that I do not claim: Tiger Woods (63 edits), Britney Spears (21 edits), Ralph Heikkinen (7 edits), John Maulbetsch (5 edits), Rickey Henderson (1 edit, but 6 talk page edits to clean up article history), and Willis Ward (4 edits). To be honest, most if not all of my edits for Tiger came after the article was promoted, but it might be fair to say my contributions have kept his article up to standard. However, I take the significant contribution part of the claim to mean more than making a few minor edits. I will continue to claim to have contriubted significantly to the most GAs after you claim to have passed me. I also consider nomming articles a service to the project, but I disagree with your count.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTM) 15:38, 21 November 2008 (UTC)
I understand your service to the project as I outlined above. I just consider the claim of significant contributor a bit specious in my random audit of your four most recent GAs only one of which I would count as a significant contribution. I may consider claiming a credit for Tiger though. Keep up the good work of getting articles certified. I am just saying your count is different from mine. I only count significant contributions among my count.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTM) 20:18, 21 November 2008 (UTC)
{{User Good Article}} says "this user helped promote the article [[]] to good article status". If Mitchazenia successfully nominates an article, it is perfectly acceptable for him to say he helped promote it. –Juliancolton Tropical Cyclone 22:19, 21 November 2008 (UTC)

How about you reviewing mine and I'll review at least one of yours. I will make a scholarly effort to evaluate it (not just a rubber stamp!) and ask you to do the same. If we do this, we'll both get the process moving. I intend to review others but want to start out slow by reviewing one GA only. OK with you? I think one has to go to the article talk page (Alan Mulally in my case) then click on the link to start reviewing articles. Chergles (talk) 00:53, 5 December 2008 (UTC)

NY 474[edit]

I've passed NY 474 for GA. I'm really not sure I did it correctly. Would you process the Alan Mulally GA nomination and show me the best way to do it? Thanks. Chergles (talk) 17:46, 6 December 2008 (UTC)
