Reply to note on Oxymoron's talk page[edit]

Hello Mr. Whiskers, I noticed your note to Oxymoron, and I've actually written a tutorial for new editors that helps them understand policies and guidelines, needed to fight vandalism, and goes into the proper way to notify editors, when to warn, what templates to use, and when to report, as well as how. Deleting Content: CheapAssMTA[edit]

The only content I am deleting is to remove the name of CheapAssMTA's links as a consequence of the speedy deletion of the article of the same name. I was simply reverting until I could no longer do so, and had to delete text. If I am doing something wrong, or handling it in the wrong way, please let me know specifically and in detail. You did get started with an apology on my page. :-). Now, it would be good if you would undo any reversions of what I did, so that I don't have to do it all over again. Thanks. May I suggest that, before you put a warning on a user's page, you check out how long they have been here and what they usually do, before you add a tag. You could also ask a question or be sure that you have read the "Edit Summaries" before you tag. Vandals are not usually long-time users with lots of contributions, though it has been known to happen. Newly opened accounts, often unregistered, but not always, are more likely to be vandals that long-time users. This is a generalization, of ourse, but checking before you tag is a good idea. People's free time is wasted in dealing with improperly tagged vandalism, just as it is with vandalism itself, though the former, we hope, is a learning activity. Now my morning's work period has been used up in reverting inappropriate text, and writing to you. I hope both activities turn out to have been useful, especially if you undo what you have undone of mine. Thanks Bielle (talk) 17:13, 21 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Seems you are very bored. I added an iw to Template:MONTH only and corrected the French interwiki there because it showed to fr:Modèle:MONTH instead of fr:Modèle:MONTHISO what's the name in frwp. Welcome (and a few ideas)[edit]

Hi Mr.Whiskers. As Dweller has said above (and a few other people have commented on your talk page), you need to slow down a little bit and learn a bit more about what Wikipedia is about. In particular, you need to learn about what we think of as "good faith edits", good articles, etc.

A lot of the editors that you have "warned" for vandalism have not vandalised pages at all. Take this poor guy who you slapped a vandal warning on. All this person was doing was clarifying some dates in an article. This is not vandalism. It's just a small change and happens all the time. In the same way, this unfortunate anon was only making minor language and naming corrections to one article.

Your good intentions are obvious, and it is true that vandalism can be a problem in this project - however you are focusing your energies in the wrong places.

One of the ideas we like here the most is that we assume that other people are also working with the same good intentions that we have ourselves, and so we only resort to vandal warnings (and article deletions) for things that are really inappropriate.

So. As Dweller has advised. Consider learning a little bit more about what the project is about, how people treat each other on the project, and think a little bit harder about what other users are trying to do. Certainly before you stick "unfriendly" warning templates on other peoples user pages. And definitely before you nominate valid and useful pages and templates for deletion.

Hi there. In case you didn't know, when you add content to talk pages and Wikipedia pages that have open discussion, you should sign your posts by typing four tildes ( ~~~~ ) at the end of your comment. On many keyboards, the tilde is entered by holding the Shift key, and pressing the key with the tilde pictured. You may also click on the signature button located above the edit window. This will automatically insert a signature with your name and the time you posted the comment. This information is useful because other editors will be able to tell who said what, and when. I hope that the guide helped. In response to your questions: I think it would be best if you stay away from things like vandal fighting and deletion until you gain a bit of expierence. I will be there to guide you along the way. Deletion is a difficult process, I suggest you familiarize yourself with the common reasons for deletion. Just placing the deletion template on the top wouldn't delete it. I know, WP has tons of rules and is quite daunting. As for the Barnstar question: Barnstars are ways of rewarding users who have put significant effort into things and had good results. To get a userpage like mine, I suggest you learn a bit of formatting or ask someone to design one for you. User:Phaedriel offers Userpage design as well as User:Dfrg.msc I believe. All towns and villages, however small, have always been considered notable in WP. You have the right to challenge it in AfD if you like, but I advise you not to bother, as they have always been upheld. Hi Mr.Whiskers. As Kathryn has noted, you are continuing to revert edits and add vandal warnings, where edits are often generally acceptable "good faith" changes. Per my note the other day, you really should spend a little bit more time learning about the project, getting involved in creating new articles or adding value to articles yourself, before you get bogged down in vandal patrol and AfD issues. These are some of the most difficult and problematic areas of the project, and a "newbie" like yourself should probably build up to activities in those areas. Otherwise you're going to get yourself (or worse still - someone else) in trouble unnecesarily. I understand that you're probably off school during the holidays, and may be at a loss for something to do, but tracking the Special:Recentchanges page (when you don't really know what to look for) might not be the best way to go. Consider writing an article on something you are interested in, or add detail on the article about your hometown or something instead. All the best. Please be a little more conservative when tagging newly created articles for speedy deletion in the future. The following things should have prevented you from tagging the article: the use of wiki-links, foreign language links, and categories. All of these indicate context. It's no matter as I have already expanded the article, but a less experienced user than I might have been insulted or confused by the tagging, causing them not to contribute that article or even to leave the project all together.
