Proposed deletion of Systems Science - IIT Rajasthan[edit]

The article Systems Science - IIT Rajasthan has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

About Systems Science - IIT Rajasthan[edit]

Hi Mrehanms, I wanted to talk to you directly about the article you just created. You've copy-and-pasted content from this website, which is not an acceptable way to create content on Wikipedia. The website's content is copyrighted, and cannot be reproduced on Wikipedia for legal reasons. That's why I had to add a tag onto to it for speedy deletion-- articles that infringe copyright are never OK on Wikipedia.

If you want, you can try to summarize the information so as to avoid this. However, I must also stress that you need to provide evidence that this particular program at IIT Rajasthan is notable in the way of reviews or news articles, for example. I noticed in the deletion discussion, you said that "the number of views it gets will demonstrate if it is unnotable or not." This is actually not a great way to define notability, because lots of things that are popular or useful probably don't belong on Wikipedia, like travel guides to famous world cities. A better way to define notability is if the subject is discussed by independent, reliable sources like in newspapers, books, or in reviews.

Systems Science - IIT Rajasthan - I Jethrobot[edit]

Hi!! The permission for reproducing the copyrighted content under the Creative Commons Licence has been obtained, prior to uploading the content on Wikipedia. The Institution has been willing to share the content in the public domain for public benefit. This is the very reason I have given a reference to that page in the article. Thank you for your offer I,Jethrobot, and I welcome the offer. My aim is to simply create a stub/ skeleton for others to work upon, and keep adding and editing the information. As you might have noted, the content put up is a bit too technical. However I am sure that in the course of time, with community editing, the content on the wiki will have been modified to an extent by users, such that it can be understood universally. At the end of the day, I believe that we will definitely have unique content on the wiki.

As for independent sources on whether the course is notable or not

Considering the one percent rule, if these many people are wiling to post their queries on the web (google puts it around 75), there will be ten times that number who is actually looking for that information.

In case this article, which seeks to provide information to public about a revolutionary, and unheard of course (in India) still follows under the criteria that it needs to be deleted, kindly tell me, why this article or Weill Cornell Medical College this one should not be deleted, since it is also of the same kind, about a medical school, a part of a bigger university having its own wiki page. In the same manner as you follow School/College system under different universities in the US, in India we have the system of different dpartsments (called Centre of Excellences, in this case) under bigger universities/institutions. The article proposed for deletion is not about a particular course. Instead it is about an entire department (CoE), which is of the same stature. If you think that IITs are unheard of, and do not deserve as much attention as an institute that does not even figure in the top 100 in various rankings (Cornell University), then please read article. Being in a third world country, the exposure on international media is limited, but, this is not the sole criteria that it is unworthy of attention.

I meant no offence to Cornell University or anyone associated with it. I have just used an example to prove that similar pages do exist on wikipedia, and if rules apply, then by the basic doctrine of equality, equal/same rules should apply to equals. If such articles are allowed to exist, the there is no reason why this article cannot, and if this article is to be deleted, then same should be the case with similar articles like those I have mentioned.

Okay, let's start with copyright. You've said that the institution has given permission to use the material via a Creative Commons License. Great. However, this needs to be verified in one of two ways: 1) A Creative Commons statement being clearly displayed on the website itself (right now it just says "© Copyright © 2010 IIT Rajasthan All Rights Reserved" at the bottom), or 2) if the institutions sends an e-mail to permissions-en@wikimedia.org. Please check out information on granting Wikipedia to use copyrighted materials on how to arrange this.
Second of all, let's go through your sources and address how much coverage they give to the Systems Sciences CoE specifically.
The source is reliable, but there's not much in the way of coverage here. Merely that Systems Science was a proposed CoE.
Again, this just mentions the CoE itself, but nothing much about it.
The fact that this comes from "a random google sites page" is not a good sign of reliability. Furthermore, the fact that a workshop was held there still doesn't say much about the CoE itself.
Again, this isn't really a source that is helpful for the article-- it says more about the workshop itself and the person, Koushik Chatterjee, than the CoE.
This is a great source, and I think this is the kind of material you'd want to include in the article, showing that the research of the department is the subject of discussion by news sources.
Yahoo Answers is not a reliable source. The fact that a question was asked about the CoE only proves that someone, anyone asked it. Yahoo Answers does not have editors or an editorial staff, nor does it validate anything in the questions or responses.

Forums and their content are also not reliable sources, because people can post pretty much anything they want.
This is a primary source, which can be helpful to obtain certain information, but it can't really be used to establish notability.
This appears to a personal blog, and is also not a reliable source.
As for your arguments about the Cornell-related articles, I have a few things to say. First, the List of Cornell University faculty is a list, which have different guidelines than articles. Second, I can understand your confusion with why something like Weill Cornell Medical College has an article and why yours doesn't (aside from the copyright issues, that is). You should probably read this policy on keeping academic colleges / departments. I believe the reason that Cornell's is there is because Cornell's academic programs, as a whole, are considered notable. But as it says, "In general these organizations are not notable (see WP:ORG) and should not be split off from the main institution article in the absence of significant coverage by reliable, independent sources." So, what we could do is simply put info on the CoE onto the main page for IIT Rajasthan. How does that sound? I, Jethrobot drop me a line (note: not a bot!) 03:45, 17 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • Why did you feel it necessary to put your long message in three places? Have you never encountered the concept of links? One thing that offended me about your article was your idleness in simply copying from the website instead of writing a specific article for Wikipedia. There was no need to begin with a definition of systems science - that is already covered in the separate article. The non-bot has spent much more time than you deserve, refuting your arguments above. All I need say is that the faculty deserves a short paragraph within the IIT Rajasthan article but it is very difficult to justify a separate article.
