Dear Onel5969

You have rejected this article on Theo Sowa based on it "not fulfilling notability guidelines". A person, especially one is not of UK descent, who receives a CBE is definitely notable. In the entry in the London Gazette, Ms. Theodosia Sowa was given the award for: "For services to the Voluntary Sector in the UK and Overseas". Her other interventions, mentioned in the article, also meet the guidelines. Please could you be more specific as to what you need to be assured of her notability, so that we can resubmit the article that is an entry for the Wiki Loves Women, #15Challenge contest. Onel5969, I agree with Islahaddow's comment above. CBE is a clear pass of WP:ANYBIO#1. Although several claims in the article need to be sourced and the article is shambolic in its current state. We can simply decline the submission on that basis and not on the basis of notability. I will work on the article and move it to namespace, perhaps today. Let me know if you have any concern. Questions about Declined Article

My username is DRCRichardson (real name Erin ... hi!) and I am sending this in regards to a draft I submitted (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Charles_Richardson) on behalf of Dr. Charles Richardson. Thank you so much for reviewing the article and I do appreciate your feedback as this is my first time writing an article for Wikipedia. I wanted to touch base with you for your thoughts as I plan to edit the draft and resubmit.

I agree that it reads more advertisement than encyclopedia. Are there specific sections you think I should fine tune? Right now I'm planning on cleaning up his companies as I think his inventions are the most interesting, but wanted to check with you as you have a different perspective.

I am working on updating sources and will include more news outlets and scientific studies of his inventions.

Any additional feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Erin - Wikipedia uses categories for declines, and the advertising one was the closest. I think a more apt description would be that it reads like a CV, or a promotional brochure. I'll put up some links on the draft page which you can take a look at. On the whole, just state facts, not opinions, and use sources which are independent of the subject, and talk about the subject at depth. Right now, most of the sources are about the companies, not about him. Also, YouTube is not a reliable source, so you should lose those. The Charlotte Business cites are nice to verify the facts, but they don't help his notability, since they are more about the companies. If those articles were about him, they would be good. Also, he'll need at least one in-depth article from a non-local source (outside the Carolinas). Hope this helps. Onel5969 TT me 01:08, 2 February 2016 (UTC)

Hi Pbergstrom - That's a nice article to verify a fact in the article, and slightly helps his notability. To show notability you need at least 3 in-depth articles from independent sources. If that article was all about Wasson, rather than about what he's announcing, that would go to notability, but the brevity of it would make you need 4-5 like that. I hope that gives you enough direction. I'm into mining myself, so I found the article interesting, and will be more than willing to help you get it into shape. I plan to add additional references to the Sean Young (psychologist) entry before resubmitting, but please note: I have cited an opinion-editorial from the New York Times; Dr. Young is the executive director of two research centers at the most applied to university in the United States; and he won a "Research Catalyst" award for innovative work. I believe these more than qualify him as a "notable person." I will also add sources independent of UCLA, but again, this is the initial entry and it is comparable to people such as Mary Jane Rotheram-Borus or James H. Fowler as well as many other behavioral scientists with lesser credentials who are included in Wikipedia.

If you have advice on why this may be the wrong assumption, I welcome your advice. Many thanks.

Hi Metalhorn1 - I'm a Bruin myself, so you're preaching to the choir there. But Wikipedia has their own guidelines as to what does or does not constitute notability. Check WP:GNG and WP:SCHOLAR. The NYT piece is by him, not about him, so it's considered a primary source and therefore not valid in terms of notability. And that's the issue with your article as it stands, the references don't meet the notability criteria. If you're trying to meet WP:GNG you'll need at least 3 in-depth articles about Young from independent, reliable sources. It'll be easier for you to show he passes WP:SCHOLAR. His citation counts on Google Scholar indicate he's nothing to sneeze at, although from Wiki standards, he's borderline. But once you work on the article, I'll ask a couple of other editors who really focus on scholar articles to assess it.
The other problem you have, is that it reads like a CV, rather than an encyclopedia article. Read Wikipedia:Your first article which will help you. Hope this helps.Onel5969 TT me 01:24, 2 February 2016 (UTC)

Good morning. You have just reviewed my article on Brian Lerner. It was denied publication again. I see two distinct reasons (I think). One is showing more notability. The other seems to state I need to cite better or more clearly. I added more regarding notability but have not changed the its references. Thus, I am a little unclear if the article now has sufficient facts showing notability, but is not properly using references or cites. Can you please give me some guidance as to whether I need to both show more notability and work on the references, or if I just have to work on the reference?

Hi Nena Valnz - on Wikipedia, there's a difference between accomplished and notable. Lerner is certainly accomplished, but nothing in the article points to his notability. The closest thing is the Grava decision, but you'd need in-depth coverage of that decision showing that he was the single person responsible for the outcome. Your sourcing is okay to verify the facts of the article, but to show notability, you need in-depth articles from independent, reliable sources (usually major newspapers or magazines). Don Oriolo article

Hi there Onel5969!

I see that my article submission for Don Oriolo (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Don_Oriolo) was declined...bummer.

I'd love to get this article up, but I'm unsure of exactly what I should fix. I know I used citations throughout most of the write-up, and other facts that I know to be true but can't find an immediate source I left as "citation needed." Should I remove the "citation needed" sections for now so that the article can go live, and then dig around for more sources?

Disclosure: I am a journalist and I wrote one of the articles used as a primary source for this page (the article appeared in the Milford Journal, which is Reference number 1).

Hi TheFluffiestHead - Well, the fact that you're the author of one of the primary sources means that you have a definite conflict of interest, so please read that link and take the appropriate steps. Second, to show notability, you'd need at least 3 in-depth articles from independent, reliable sources in order to show the subject's notability. Count your article as one (the fact you wrote it is a COI issue, not a notability one), now you need 2 others like it. I truly can’t see why Steve’s entry for me on WP (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_James_Simpson) should have been accepted, and yours not, unless it’s to do with the nature of the links. Truth be told, I don’t think either of us really belong on WP, which is an encyclopaedia, designed to give people access to hard knowledge.

I have published over 6 books, had 'Rubbery Figures' the political puppets on Australian national tv for 8 years on the ABC and HSV 7 and l have recently produced to feature length documentaries on the Australian and New Zealand olympic rowers and scullers.

Hi Mike - Harvard? Meh. The man behind the curtain (read that "Ivy League schools") have been exposed of late as being highly over-rated. In fact, a state school out west actually outranked Harvard the past two years. You've made no changes to the article since I declined it. Still doesn't meet the notability criteria and referencing requirements. To show notability, you'd need at least 3 in-depth, lengthy articles about the subject from independent, reliable sources. Hi DrRajKumarChabbewal - Well, first you either have a conflict of interest issue, see WP:Autobigraphy, or you violate our username policy. So you should probably address that. Second, the article has a huge POV issue, which will need to be corrected. Articles need to be written from a neutral point of view, and in an encyclopedic, rather than essay fashion. Hi Metalhorn1 - Unfortunately, I don't speak Danish, so it's difficult for me to pull sources from that wiki. Do you have any others beside Fromer's? We need at least 3 from independent sources on English Wikipedia to show notability. If you can come up with the sources, I'm more than happy to put them in the article for you and move it to the mainspace, but right now, it doesn't meet our notability criteria. Hope this helps. Revision of Sean Young (psychologist) Entry

Hi. I did some significant reworking of the Draft:Sean Young (psychologist) entry. I think/hope the tone and notability issues should have been resolved.

I included more than 10 references from sources such as CBS News, CNET, notable healthcare publishers/sites, etc. These sources cite, quote, or summarize Dr. Young's work in a wide range of contexts. I also included two external links to UC pages that list scores of news items about his work. I expect the entry's referencing would expand in coming years, given he is a "rising star" in the field of scholarly research about social media. Also, a minor quibble with your last reply: the article I cite in the New York Times was indeed by Dr. Young, but it is within the paper's Room for Debate section, which was solicited (and his piece is technically just one facet of a six-part article created by the Times' Editorial Board).

Finally, the entry still says "Review waiting" even though I did not resubmit. Hope that doesn't indicate a problem. Many thanks for all your work.

In my opinion, notability has been established. Every citation at least mentions him, and several go into quite a bit of detail about him such as interviews, etc. He received a national award in the electrical industry and an additional one from an accredited university in Michigan post college based on his career and published work. One specific study is also published on the University of California, Davis's California Lighting Technology's website. When combined with the articles about him, or the articles he's internationally published on the subject of efficient lighting, I believe this puts him in the notability camp. One Mlive article titled “"Jackson area business leaders applaud proposal that eliminates 'disincentive to invest'" and he’s one of the “leaders” cited; while in a completely different article, written by a completely different reporter, it headlines him and the fact that he, and his work, is at least academically/author notable. WP:CITEKILL may seem like it applies, but it’s because he’s been in a lot of articles. Perhaps the BIO links should be deleted? The issue here, per your comment, is of MLive, tED Magazine, The Parking Professional, Parking Today, Electrical News, or Yahoo Finance as “fringe” publications. These are national, and notable, electrical industry (except Yahoo Finance, although national, it's not specifically electrical, although his work has appeared there, too) relevant publications. In my opinion that is enough to push him over the GNG threshold. He’s not going to be mentioned in a Vogue magazine, or a Discovery Channel piece for a study on an electrodeless lamp. Should the notability of the publications he has been published in be elaborated on? Or at least lessen the citation use of the same ones more than once?

Further, I would also like to mention that in order to have shown notability for GNG, I have provided 8 in-depth articles specifically about the subject from independent, reliable sources. They are:

Hi MrSmooth31 - First get rid of every citation which is by the subject. Second, if a reference only mentions him, delete it, unless it is to verify an underlying fact of the article (e.g. your cite #5). Third, get rid of all press releases. Fourth, Ted is an industry magazine, and is mostly a pr piece. Also, stuff like Siena are connected to the subject, therefore not independent. I hope this gives you enough direction to start out. Thank you Onel5969. I have removed all citations by the subject. I have also removed 21 references, including press releases, per your instructions. I have also added one new reference. Per my Google Alerts, an electrical industry organization copy and pasted one of the subject’s articles into their blog today. I will delete if it is a moot reference (#27). It is still my opinion that the independent, reliable sources that are listed in the article establish GNG of the subject. Regarding tED magazine, you are right. It is an industry magazine. However, it is also the publication of the National Association of Electrical Distributors (NAED), a notable trade association for the electrical distribution industry. I think the notability of that organization, and their interest and coverage of the subject (including his NAED national award), additionally satisfies GNG and WP:ANYBIO. Further, the third notable piece of the subject is the Siena Heights University award. Firstly, I do agree with you that the SHU articles are not independent of the subject as he graduated from that university. On the other hand, the subject possesses a communications degree from that university, and that university gave him a prestigious award based upon his communications career that was outside academia but in his academic capacity. Would you please be more specific about what is needed? I have located several different newspapers and other reputable sources that confirm that she was an elected official, beginning in the 1930s when women's rights were just taking off, and that she was re-elected 5 times. Perhaps it is not a big deal today for a female to be elected to County Recorder, but it was notable in those days; plus the fact that she was Hispanic. I've added the notoriety of her husband because they were a political power couple in Arizona, and both are still talked and written about today.

Hi Sbettwy - first, because of your username, I'm guessing that you might have a bit of a conflict of interest. If so, please read that link and take the steps suggested there. Now, about your article. First, lose the section about "legacy". Family history is not legacy. The Mexican heritage section is virtually unsourced and needs to go as well. The political life section has a high degree of informality and POV issues. It needs to be re-written from an uninvolved and neutral perspective. Hope this helps. Btw, I think she might be notable enough to pass wikipedia standards, but for none of the reasons you state above. The fact that her appointment of a Republican as her assistant seemed to garner beyond local news. Which reminds me, please take a look at WP:CIT on how to format citations. Also, obviously many, if not most, readers will not care to read about it in the first place, but I would like to improve it so it can't be put up for deletion on a basis of not being notable enough or something like that. Hi Sstan19 - On the talk page of the article is the classification. There's also a link there which will take you to the scale, and how articles are put into the different classes. As you add more cited material to the article, it will flesh out more and then you can have it upgraded. There are two main types of sources: those which can be used to show the notability of the subject, which you've already met, and those which can show the verifiability of any assertions in the article. In that second class there are two main types: primary and secondary. Primary sources can be used to verify facts, but not claims. For example, you can use the speedway's own website to verify dates, events, etc., but you can't use it to verify a claim that it's "the oldest dirt track in ...". That second assertion, since it's a claim, would have to come from a seondary, independent, reliable source. Reliability of sources is another issue, take a look at WP:RS, which explains about how to judge whether or not a source is reliable.
I wouldn't worry about it being nominated for deletion, I think the article clearly passes that bar, but it never hurts to keep improving an article. Just remember to use sources. Hope this helps. Onel5969 TT me 19:17, 5 February 2016 (UTC)

Hi MBisanz - The AfD I took part in was about the band, OftM, which, imho, was clearly not notable enough for an article. I didn't take a look at the Ron Underwood article. The sources the editor left on your talk page are generic tour announcements, so wouldn't go to notability (although they could be used to verify those tour dates). Doing a quick search on News, Underwood is one of those borderline notability cases. My advice to the editor would be to get some good sources, and create an article using the AfC process, that way, some editors can take a look at it and decide on its notability prior to moving it to the mainspace. One of the reviewers said I should not include sources/citations from LinkedIn. Are there other sources, besides LinkedIn, that are discouraged? In writing the article I tried to avoid the company's website and other company sources and focus on third-party sources.

For the article, I used https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IntraLinks and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VITAC as models for building the article about Merrill Corporation.

My article was deemed as "reads too much like an advertisement". Could you share some thoughts about how I should edit the article so it's not deemed advertising. What I mean by this, is: Should I eliminate the entire section about Products, or is it more about eliminating adjectives such as "leading," which may lack a third-party source to back up that claim?

I also wanted to ask if it's helpful to link to other Wikipedia pages? For example, Merrill offers virtual data rooms as part of their business and I see that there is a Wikipedia page on Virtual Data Room (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virtual_data_room)?

Hi StephenDupont55403 - all excellent questions. Let's see if I can help. First question, regarding sourcing. In a nutshell, yes, take a look at WP:RS to see how reliable sources are determined. Basically, if a site doesn't have editorial oversight, it's unreliable. That would include any social networking site, like LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, etc. Blogs should also be avoided, especially if you're just starting to edit. There are some at very reliable sources like the Washington Post, which are reliable, but it can be tricky to figure out which, so it's best to avoid them at the beginning. Also, press releases are totally unreliable, so avoid them. About the only thing they are good for is to verify something like, "On February 1, 2016, Company A announced it had purchased all the outstanding shares of Company X...".
It's not a bad impulse to look at other articles to give you insight on how to edit a new article, however, if an article has a tag at the top, which both of your examples do, it's not a good idea to use them as an example, since editors feel there are issues with both of those. I'm going to put some links on your draft, which will be helpful for you to read. Particularly the Simplified Manual of Style, [[How to create your first article, and On how to properly format your citations. Those should help you decide on what to include and not include, as well as how to improve the format/structure of your article, and how to properly format citations. Regarding promotion: yes, listing products can be problematical, especially when done in a way which highlights those products, which your article does. Also, be wary of phrases like "the company refocused its business to become a leader in ...", "Under CEO Rusty Wiley’s leadership...", "leverages technology and expertise to help its clients ". Those are all marketing statements, designed to sell the company to a prospective client. Articles tell us about the subject, ads sell us the product.
Yes, it is very helpful to link to other wikipedia articles you do that by placing [[ brackets around the article name ]] , like Saint Paul, Minnesota.
Finally, don't be afraid to ask questions. The more specific they are, the better, so an editor can address it. Hope this helps. Onel5969 TT me 19:44, 5 February 2016 (UTC)

Hi Gregory. Different Wikis have different criteria for notability. English Wikipedia probably has the highest standards. On English wiki, the guiding principles can be read at WP:GNG (general notability guidelines). Since he was an academic, he might also qualify under WP:ACADEMIC. I have a problem. One that won't go away no matter how I approach it. It's out of my hands, so to speak.

We live in changing times and the rate of change is super-fast. How is it possible that new voices (such as mine), with new ideas (such as The Nomadic Oracle) can overcome a cultural closed shop? It doesn't matter whether I'm speaking of Wikipedia (which I love and hugely respect) or Google's pagerank system, or your federal government (no matter where you live).

If the work I'm peddling had been written by a notable monster (say George Bush, why not?), there'd be no problem with notability. If the work had been published by a notable publisher (which it couldn't have been, I wouldn't have been able to release editorial control) there'd have been no problem.

In this new era, we MUST respect independent and interdependent, individual creativity without question. ONLY by raising consciousness will any of our grand-children love us. We must protect the future. But in the ever-present game of celebrity status and commercial interests, those in control will never concur.

I believe the present Wikipedia notability policy is over-restrictive. It's not democratic, which is a shame since Wikipedia is, in many respects, a great pro-democracy tool through the free distribution of knowledge. Aims totally supported by the book in question.

Not all of us work to the beats of personal engrandisement or even profit. There are other motivations far more pressing. The work in question is one of love and concern for the state of this world. It sees its subject in a totally new way. It has brought healing and is greatly loved by those very few individuals who have touched base with it. But in this hard, rational positivist world, such thoughts are meaningless. It has taken the best part of a decade to complete.

Some of those journals do not have websites because they were hard copy journals in the 90s and have since closed. But the articles published in other online places by other people are citing articles by Azad Najafov (e.g. 3rd reference)

Hi Vkguf - To show notability, there have to be several in-depth articles about the subject, which are from independent sources. Currently, your article's sources are either connected to the subject in some way, or are simply listings of the subject. If you can provided 3 in-depth sources about her, then you should be okay. I also checked on Google Scholar, and she has a very low citation count, so I'm not sure about her notability. But if you have those sources, please add them to the article, and then you can resubmit it. Also, it would be nice if you formatted your citations properly, as per WP:CIT. Perhaps it is Wikipedia's practice to reject a first draft. In any event, I am resubmitting it with one minor change (the deletion of the subject's website as a source). Beyond that, I can see no valid reason not to approve this article submission. As for the suggestion that I consult "experienced editors" at Wikipedia, I have been writing and editing for both consumer and trade news publications for over two decades. I have an M.A in English and Writing from Fordham University and, like you, I am a native New Yorker.

Please take care in reviewing the copy again, and if there are indeed any issues, let me know specifically what they may be. Hi ROS21662 - This is a blp (bio of a living person), therefore almost every assertion in it needs a citation. Take a look at WP:BLP. Don't worry about other articles. Wikipedia has been around for a while, and many articles were written when standards weren't as high, and with over 5,000,000 articles, a lot of crappy articles still exist. I didn't look at the external links, but you need to format your citations properly, as per WP:CIT, and take a look at WP:ILC about how to use inline citations. reference 3 and 4 are sourced from real estate businesses, they are both unrelated to the school and independent and they are not merely repeating information provided by the school's administration. They are discussing the changes taking place on the island and the growing population and mention the school as evidence of this -saying...

reference 2 = "More and more western foreigners (farangs) - including young couples and families - are moving to Koh Phangan for a few years. The trend is clearly illustrated by the number of foreign students that increases every year at Si Ri Panya School"

reference 3 = Whereas once there were only a small number of children being schooled in Koh Phangan, there is a growing community of international families resident on the island. Si Panya school is an international school for children from ages 5-13. The school is soon moving to a purpose built school which is on bigger premises to accommodate the quickly expanding student numbers. For the first year ever, Si Panya will be offering a year 7 class (the equivalent of secondary school in the UK).

Reference 5 and 9 are from our local "newspapers" both are independent and reliable there editors value fact-checking and accuracy and are not in any way related to the school

reference 5 is from 'Koh Phangan Island News' is an independent local news site that again speak about the big difference having an international school will make to life on the island and the current state of education here.

reference 9 = from "Koh Phangan Information" again an independent local news site that is actually rather negative about the school, it is a lengthy comprehensive article that talks about education and literacy rates in Thailand as a whole and the education choices on the island, and how up until now many wealthy Thais have chosen to send their children off the island to be educated, and how the availability of the international school has made a notable difference to the islanders way of life.

There are now 10 references, some more notable than others ;) but I am hoping this article may now be allowed. 10 independent sources may not sound like a lot but for a small island of 125km/sq in the middle of nowhere with a total population of just 13,200 people it is significant media coverage, in fact we have been written about by every local news source on the island and being written abut by "Bangkok Post" for example is not at all likely.

However, outside those countries, and particularly for countries in Asia and Africa, Internet coverage is poor. Where this is the case then, to avoid systemic bias, local sources should be sought."

Could I ask for your advice how to proceed so we can get the article included in wikipedia and part of the encyclopedia.

Hi Sarah white 1 - I'm afraid SwisterTwister is correct. Regarding your sources, a couple are from blogs, so they don't count, same with the Youtube source. The issue with sources like real estate sites, city sites, etc. are they are constructed to advertise for that particular community, and so therefore they are not the most reliable sources, since they tend to simply write about almost anything to do with the location. Thank you for reviewing the proposed Wikipedia page on Violet M Digby and for your constructive comments.

The issue of notability is an interesting one. You invite me to make a case for Violet, but the task is one which is hampered by distance in time, by fashion and by the indifference to the role of women which prevailed in her lifetime. Violet was a notable woman of her generation. At the time of Partition in 1947 there were fewer than 700 British members of the Indian Civil Service, and few of them were accompanied by their wives. Violet, as the wife of a senior British High Court Judge, Kenelm George Digby, was one of very few such women in India, and, as such, was extremely well known to her peers, however insignificant the role of such ‘First Ladies’ may seem today. Even though the notability of her husband is sufficient for him to qualify for a page in Wikipedia, in my first draft, I sought to avoid the association with her official position as the wife of this very senior Indian Civil Servant out of a sensitivity to the feminist norms of our own generation. In the latest draft I have tried to suggest her status a little more strongly.

The history of the British in India has been similarly out of fashion since the end of Empire, but as the distance in time increases, so has an interest in a more nuanced approach to the complex relationship between the governors and the governed. Violet M Digby is a part of that complex mosaic, as is her role as a ‘traditionalist’ in the history of the St Ives colony of artists, in which interest continues to grow (in the form of at least one television programme [The Art of Cornwall, BBC 2010, presented by Dr James Fox] and a number of newspaper articles, e.g., http://www.theguardian.com/artanddesign/2014/may/09/tate-st-ives-modern-artists-localism .

Violet’s notability as a member of the St Ives Society of Artists (STISA) is also clouded by the politics of the colony, but for reasons other than that of her gender. It is curious and unfortunate fact that none of the historians of STISA have compiled a page for Wikipedia, choosing instead to write about the fractiousness of the society in other media. An online search will suggest the range of material. The reason why Violet M Digby does not immediately appear in the online search is partly explained by the old maxim that ‘history is written by the victors’. Violet was on the losing side of the factional dispute between the ‘traditionalists’ and the ‘modernists’. David Tovey (www.stivesart.info), who had access to Violet’s diaries, wrote an article about Violet M Digby reproduced on page 35 of ‘Violet M Digby, A St Ives Painter in Kashmir’. The following extract will give some flavour of why the traditionalists, like Violet, lost out.


The artistic community in St Ives during the 1950s was divided into cliques and was riven with ill feeling. After the split of 1949, which left permanent scars, there were further bust ups within the Penwith Society, as Nicholson and Hepworth sought to convert it into a society for abstract artists only. Leonard Fuller, Marion Hocken and other more traditionally minded artists, who had been founder members of the Penwith Society, were soon made to feel unwelcome and drifted back to STISA. Then, in 1955, there was a further coup within STISA, when Bernard Ninnes was ousted as Chairman, for holding too modernist an outlook, and a more reactionary committee was put in place, which featured leading marine painters, Claude Muncaster, as President, and Charles Pears and STISA founder, George Bradshaw, as Vice-Presidents. For instance, Muncaster, whom Violet records as socialising with in her diary and who shortly afterwards became president of RSMA, launched into an astonishing tirade in his first AGM, calling extremist forms of modern art “dangerous, decadent and destructive” and “a sort of Teddy-boy business” influenced by the Russians! Whilst this narrow-minded attitude now seems laughable, traditionalists in the late 1950s became increasingly indignant at the attitude that the media were taking towards representational art, for it became the target of brutal disparaging remarks, whilst funding bodies would not even contemplate giving it any support. Many traditional artists, who had enjoyed successful careers, were now facing financial ruin, and were exceedingly bitter.

In the Wikipedia guidelines about notability to which you directed me, is another contentious matter, which is that of sources. Clearly, and for good reason in the majority of cases, Wikipedia favours secondary sources, over less accessible primary source material. In the case of Violet Digby there is a considerable body of work and a large archive of material about her, which has only recently been made available to those who wish to examine it. Most academics would surely prefer primary to secondary sources, and the primary sources are now available and have been examined by historians and enthusiasts. This primary source material has resulted in a book about Violet, and has attracted the interest of historians of Cornish Art like David Tovey (http://www.stivesart.info). In the Violet Digby archive is a letter from David Brown, then Assistant Keeper of the Modern Collection of the Tate Gallery in London, seeking more information about Violet for the gallery records, saying that he was given the address by Howard Hodgkin, who also qualifies for a Wikipedia page.

The trustees of the Violet Digby collection intend to donate the archive to either the Tate Modern in St Ives, or to the Courtauld Institute in London, so that access is easier for those who do not live in Jersey CI, where the archive is now stored, and can be accessed only by appointment.

Another reason for the thinness of Violet’s presence in the record is that she did not need to, and therefore did not part with many paintings in her lifetime. Her son, Simon Digby (an oriental scholar who also appears in the pages of Wikipedia), held on to the paintings for his own pleasure. The result is that very few of Violet’s paintings have appeared in the commercial record for more than 60 years. The charity set up in Simon Digby’s name on his death in 2010 now holds the paintings, and it has been offered an exhibition of Violet’s work at the Nehru Centre in London in April of this year. After the exhibition, the trustees will arrange for the paintings to be auctioned. Thus Violet will re-appear in the commercial record and the number of Internet searches for Violet M Digby will inevitably increase. I hope that that the suggestion that Wikipedia does not have hard and fast rules, will allow some flexibility on this issue of ‘notability’. I am confident that the Wikipedia page will be a useful resource for historians of the British in India, for historians of the colony of artists in St Ives and for those that admire the work of this talented and rather curious artist.

Hi Klidenengro - I'll let another editor take a swing at the notability issue, but before they do, you really need to edit the article to a more neutral, more encyclopedic tone. Only use the artist's last name throughout, after its first mention, never by her first name. Get rid of all commentary, especially if it is unsourced, such as "...the class of British colonial civil servants and engineers which by the time of her death in 1960 was fast disappearing;" "Kidd and Mrs Carnell became firm friends and decided to remain together in Europe with their daughters, Violet and Enid, rather than return to the East to manage their husbands' households;" or "Violet had spent quite a lot of money on her expeditions to Kashmir and was feeling the pinch." Structure and formatting will be worked on. I'm quite new to Wikipedia. Neutrality is puzzling, as this entry is based quite heavily on two University of Riga documents, one by Rosne and the other by Gringerga, the latter was a successful thesis examined by the professors at the Riga Academy of Art.

The artist has a small following here in the UK, as well as other English speaking countries, and so a Wiki page was deemed useful to those who have an interest in this artist.

If you can be more specific regarding neutrality, I'd be grateful. Thank you.

Hi David V. Edgeworth - It's not a heavy neutrality issue, more of an informal tone, really, and quite frankly, that's the terminology I should have used to begin with, my apologies. Phrases like "...to devote the rest of his life to his art," "Their marriage however reached a critical point during the war years," and "It was in this period of his life that Arnolds Mazitis developed a strong artistic friendship," are pretty informal, as is the constant use of his full name throughout the article, after the first time, simply refer to him by his last name. Hi Ethanjkagan - Well, the sources still don't show the notability, all but 1 are either connected to the company, or are press releases, none of which are valid to show notability (and press releases are pretty worthless, period). The article itself is still basically a promo for the software. An article tells us about the software: how it was developed, what made the development of the software significant (without just simply praising the software), who developed it, when it was released, etc. Your article is like a guidebook to the software. Hi, your elaboration is very helpful indeed. I began to wonder: to what level of neutrality I needed to go (having read the neutrality guidelines). I'm busy on other projects right now, but I'll read and re-read your other links and work on the structure and formatting in next few days-ish. I should by then have some decent quality photographs of his landscapes, still life paintings and portraits (with permissions!) and also a mugshot (well, hopefully, better than just a mugshot) of the artist to throw into a summary box feature.

On a general point, I first looked up some of his contemporaries and their Wiki entries, and the tone differed quite considerably. His mentor, Professor Valdemars Tone, has a French language Wiki page and his chess partner and friend Anslavs Eglitis has a Latvian Wiki page (even though he lived most of his adult life in California). The approach of the contributors who created those pages differ from each other in so many ways. It was hard to gauge what was acceptable. (David V. Hi David V. Edgeworth - Not only the editors, but each individual Wiki has its own style and notability guidelines. English Wiki, being the largest and oldest, has the most developed guidelines. There was a comment about using reliable independent references- all 14 references noted are of such sort. I have now added hypelinks to the original articles, rather that the annotation. Ms. Cooley has been an "artist in resident" in a multitude of colleges, museums and galleries nationally and internationally. She has, as well, received coveted awards. Hi Slachutm - Definitely be aware of WP:OVERCITE, but currently the article has not a single reference. As you add facts, they should be cited from independent sources (unless it's an uncontroversial thing, like parents, or date of birth, etc. - those can come from sites affiliated with the artist). Absolutely, Cubswin002 - The criteria for inclusion on the page reads (among other things): "Only people who already have a Wikipedia article may appear here. This establishes notability." That's a pretty standard inclusion criteria for Wikipedia "notability" pages, else it would be too time consuming for editors to prevent lots of non-notable folks from pages like this, and the list getting clogged with a bunch of peoples' friends and relatives. Having a wikipage also helps establish the connection between the person and the list they are being added to. Hi Hydourite - I see the draft's been restored. It was deleted because there was no activity on it for over 6 months. But you misconstrue the purpose of Wikipedia: it's not for advertising your event. It's an encyclopedia, and we document notable events (and people, etc.) For your article to go live, you have to document it's notability and you have to write it in a neutral, non-promotional tone. Need your help, guidance and advice

Hello there,

Greetings for the day.

Kindly note I am trying to create article related to Balrajeshware Mandir (Temple), a religious place in Mulund, Mumbai, Maharashtra, India. This temple is 100 years old, and there is a road name on Temple (Balrajeshwar Road) and this temple is situated on Balrajeshwar Road itself only.

I have submitted/resubmitted this article three times and it's been rejected for lack of Reliable Source of reference. I have tried to find many many sources of references, only mange to find Google Map link, Google plus link, two news papers link and two official government links, and one website (wwww.balrajeshwarmahadev.info). These all references have provided in this last edit, mentioned in second table.

Kindly help me to understand would these links reasonable enough to create this article?

The Balrajeshwar Mahadev Mandir [5] was established by Late Shri Godhardas Khattau approximately a 100 years ago (this event was celebrated from 22nd September to 24th September 2001).

Every year the festival of Maha Shivratri [6] (the day lord Shiva was married to goddess Parvati) is celebrated on very big scale. Thousands of devotees visit on Maha Shivratri. From 2013 every year 21 ft high ice Shiva Lingam is created for Darśana [7] around Maha Shivratri festival.

Teaneck High School extracurricular activities

Good morning:

I am questioning your opinion regarding "Peacocky/trivia" and then removing the revision. The first sentence and narrative are the truth: "Teaneck High School has a rich chess legacy , having among its alumni state and national champions." In other parts of the article on Teaneck High School, student names are given, yet when the truth about the winning chess team being "led by Kimberly McClelland", this is deleted. She was the captain of this chess team and supported by the cited article. What appears to be the problem? Coach Henry Hali WAS the coach of the winning chess team in 1997 (other coaches are mentioned in other areas of the article, why delete Coach Hali?) His son is presently a linebacker and an alumnus of Teaneck High School. Why was that deleted? These are facts, yet for some reason, unilaterally they were perceived as trivia. If that were the case, most articles in Wikipedia would be "peacock/trivia". I would appreciate a review with another editor (second opinion) to adjudicate these true statements. Hi Yvonne S. Thornton - and thanks for asking the question. First, statements like "has a rich chess legacy" are commentary. I know they pop up all the time on Wikipedia, but that's simply since there are only like 2000 active editors to watch over 5 million pages. It's nice prose, but it doesn't belong in Encyclopedia article (a magazine article would be a different outcome, where it would be entirely appropriate). Second, just because something is a fact, doesn't make it non-trivial. For example, it's a fact that David Patent came in 2435 in the 2015 Boston Marathon. I can even cite it (although you do have to put in the 2300-2400 parameter in the search it brings up), but it's still trivia. While inclusion of names in articles do not have to reach the same level of notability as they would to get an article, to simply include names of non-notable folks is pretty much the definition of trivia. It dilutes the article. Now, if Joel Benjamin had been the coach of the team, or its captain, that would be one thing. See the difference. But feel free to bring a discussion up on the talk page of the article if you still disagree. That's the nice thing about Wikipedia. Consensus. I could be wrong. The rest is relatively ok, except for the sentence "transforming itself from a community based finance house into a growing non-bank financial institution (NBFI), extending its services to the general public of Tanzania," which while informative, is also promotional. Rejected article

Hello Onel5969, I am writing to you as you are the last reviewer of my draft 'Karlovac Piano Festival'. During last several months I tried to improve my article based on all the previously suggested comments. At this point, I am not sure I can do anything more to make it better. My impression is however that your rejection is narrow minded, and as such it doesn't acknowledge the real value of this subject in its pertinent nature. I am a long-time Wikipedia user and at the moment very puzzled about Wikipedia values. Wikipedia covers all kind of 'trash - yellow journalism' topics, and it doesn't want to acknowledge such INTERNATIONALLY recognized festival. A knowledgable reviewer should know that fine-arts events are difficult cultivate and promote. In that respect, Wikipedia should potentially be more flexible when evaluating referential background of those types of subjects. Of course, I am doubtful that this message will change any outcome, but I just want to express my disappointment. Hi WorldFood - part of the issue regarding "Wikipedia values" which you mention above is a factor of the way Wikipedia is run, by volunteers. These folks tend to use the most convenient form for research: the internet. The internet, in turn, is dominated by what interests the vast majority of users: in other words, mostly crap about popular topics, so I agree with your assessment. So I agree, it is more difficult to document the notability of less popular items like this festival. This article, as it stands, is close to showing it's notability. It could use another in-depth article from an independent, reliable source, and then it would have no issue regarding reliability. Keep looking for one. Also, please take a look at WP:CIT on how to properly format citations. When you do format them, put the parameter language= in the citation, so that readers will know the citation is in a foreign language. Also, even though the underlying references are in a foreign language, the citation should be in English. Regardless, I'm going to move it to the mainspace. I'd appreciate it if you could format those citations, and please try to add another citation, as it might not pass an AfD challenge with its current references. Frankly, I am baffled by the reason given for rejecting my submission "Yadullah Khosroshahi" because is not shown to be notable! How can a central leader of the key industry in Iran, the oil industry, and of the Iranian labor movement, in four generations NOT BE NOTABLE! Iran has been ruled by U.S.-backed dictatorship from 1953-1979 and since 1979 by a clerical dictatorship. Both regimes crushed Iranian workers when they tried to organize a union or demand improvement in their lives. Khosroshahi and his colleague defied these regimes and organized oil workers in unions, strike committees and workers councils. If the historical significance of these actions is lost tot he reader is probably because he/she does not know the Iranian history, that the general strike by the oil workers in October-November 1978 broke the back of the Marshall Law and the Shah's ;leadership. Khosroshai was directly a key leader of that effort.

But what are the sources for a biography of Khosroshahi? There are literally dozens of interviews, articles that he generated in his life time. For a biography I drew on two of his autographical interviews. There are also a number of tributes paid to his life as a labor leader. I cited a number of them all published in Arash, a dissident journal published in Paris, in exile. There are generally no venues to publish about labor leaders who ere jailed and tortured by the Islamic Republic inside Iran. So, what other sources do you expect to find about Khosroshahi? Those who support labor rights praised him. Those who oppose labor rights jailed and tortured him and kept silent about his significance to the Iranian history.

As for my own credentials: I am a retired academic with 30 years of service at the State University of New York and University of California at Berkeley. During this period, I have written hundreds of articles for peer-reviewed journals and served as an editor on a number of editorial board of academic journals. So I need not take an introductory course in Wikipedia on how to write and edit an article. Khosroshahi belonged to the labor movement who members are not academic and therefore do not write about their lives and struggles. Because I was fortunate to know Khosroshahi and collaborated with him as co-editor for Labor Links I felt an obligation to introduce him to the world through an entry in Wikipedia.

So, I appreciate your constructive help to get his biography completed and published on Wikipedia. As all entries are, this one will improve over time. I hope to collect and add a list of his work at the end of this essay later.

Sorry you're baffled, Knayeri, but your article currently has nothing outside of non-independent sources and a single publication who has printed a couple of articles/interviews about him, and it's not a notable magazine. On top of the lack of referencing, the article suffers from a rather large POV issue. The current draft is more suited for a leisure magazine, rather than an encyclopedia. Finally, most of the article is devoid of citations, therefore it appears like it is original research, which isn't really allowed on Wikipedia. Hi Demes Monica - First, because of your username it appears you might have a conflict of interest with the article's subject. Take a look at WP:COI and WP:AUTOBIOGRAPHY. Second, little phrases like "featured in over 150 film festivals", "Demes continued to evolve as sensitive and creative film maker ..", and the entire paragraph beginning with "Inspired by her study ...", are all tending to be promotional. Just state facts, not commentary. Next, the large section about the different productions, with the oversize pictures (they should be thumbnails), comes off as a promotional brochure. But the two largest issues are the referencing. First, currently, there are no in-depth articles from independent sources. And second, there are no in-line citations, which would be required, see WP:ILC. Finally, it would be nice if the sources were formatted properly as per WP:CIT.

I wish to appeal your decision. First, your position is that an entry for Wikipedia MUST BE based on mainstream publications. In this view, Lech Walesa would not have had an e try had the Polish Communist dictatorship could have destroyed Solidarity early on.


Second, you belittle sources that Iranians value highly. Arash Magazine that is not longer publishing was the premier opposition magazine for the Iranian intellectuals in exile. The March 2010 issue devoted an entire section to tributes to Yadullah Khosroshahi because of the notable role this man played in the Iranian labor movement and in the struggle against the Shah's regime and the Islamic Republic (the link is to the web edition but it was printed as a magazine and sold across the world). You do not notice another valued magazine--Though and Society published in Iran until his editor had to flee repression and took asylum in Sweden.

Third, Wikipedia has published other entries on the Iranian labor and socialist issues and people with far fewer citations. For example, see the entry for the Labour Party of Iran which has only one reference.

Fourth, if in principle Wikipedia editors accept that Khosroshahi is entitled to an entry then I would be happy to work with them to edit the text to match whatever style they find appropriate. But to deny that this man is indeed a historical figure is to deny Iranian history at least for the big majority of Iranian.

Please let me know how to proceed.

And your pointing me to the bullet dealing with Lists of "notable people" is in what manner related to a redlink for a possible film festival article?
I think what you may not have read was the bullet point that stated "An existing red link can indicate one or more of the following things:" followed by it indicating "A new article is needed. When a Wikipedian writes an article, it is common practice to link key topics pertinent to an understanding of the subject, even if those topics don't have an article on Wikipedia yet. Do not remove these redlinks". While I've underlined for pertinence, the emboldening is actually in the guide. And then followed by "At any time, a Wikipedian may independently write an article on the linked-to subject, and when this happens, there's already a link ready and waiting for it. The red link also gives readers the opportunity to click on it to create the needed article on the spot." So, contrary to your asserted of an un-found consensus, there is no demand that an article "must" precede the link. And reasonable redlinks for new articles ARE specifically encouraged by guideline. We re-writing guideline here? There are editors that feel Wikipedia is now complete, too big, and needs no growth... so if you agree, perhaps you could begin the RFC to yourself seek that guide's removal. Hi Ajstrax - none of that is in the article. Remember, press must be independent (not press releases) and from reliable sources. It also must be in-depth coverage, not mere mentions or listings. For example, the NYT source currently in the article has two issues with it. First, it is just a mention of the actress; second, it's what known as a press release passing for a news article. Anytime an article contains stuff which says, the "phone number is", or "for more information, please see the website", even if the article has a byline, the lazy reporter is simply regurgitating a press release. Hi Sportswoman100, and welcome to Wikipedia. Instead of starting off by what you did wrong, let me tell you what you did right: You asked a question; you want to learn. Those are good things. Never be afraid to ask questions. Be aware, we're all volunteers here, and sometimes you'll run into someone whos... well, let's just say, they're not having a good day. Don't take it personal. Now, onto what the problems were with your edit. There were two. First, you deleted the infobox of the article. That's pretty much a no-no. Some articles don't have them, but if an article does have one, then you should discuss its removal on the talk page prior to removing it. Second, you added something to the article without a citation to back it up. The fact that the article is a blp (bio of a living person) makes it doubly problematic. I have not written an encyclopedia article before, so would be very grateful for a bit more direction of what need amending. I have tried to include only information from sources included in the article, and not to express any opinion. Where the information is not strictly factual, I have tried to reference or quote the source.

Hi Lpttojbmaljrd - Use of peacock terms such as "renowned", and phrases such as "also often experienced visions of the Infant Christ", spoken in WP's voice, are problematic. Take a look at Paul the Apostle, and how some of the claims about the apostle are worded. In other words, you can't state categorically that she had those visions, but you can state either that she claimed to have those visions, or "according to ... such and such source" she had those visions. You have the citations nicely laid out, although isbn numbers would be nice. Finally, make sure every assertion you have in the article is cited. Now the note you left me says that interviews are not good references. There must be a hundred thousand articles in Wikipedia less referenced than this one. This guy has been doing the art for some of the biggest metal Argentine bands for decades, but as this role is usually low-key, he has not a lot of references in mainstream media. Any thoughts? Hi ExperiencedArticleFixer - you're probably right about the number of poorly referenced articles. In some instances its due to the fact that notability is conferred automatically (for example, if someone served in the U.S. House of Representatives in 1808, there article might only have a single reference to show that fact, but the fact he was in the House makes them notable). In other instances its due to the fact that they are not notable (we delete dozens of articles every day, and every day there are thousands more). And in still other instances its simply a case of sloppy/lazy editing - the sources are there, but they haven't been included in the article. It's an argument called WP:OSE. Hopefully someday WP will only have well-written, well-cited articles, but with only about 2000 active editors monitoring over 5,000,000 articles, it's a daunting task. I can't speak to what another editor told you, and Czar is a very experienced editor, but there are two Rolling Stone articles. My Spanish is very limited, so I AGF and the one article I assumed was good (although in looking at the article, his name is only mentioned once, so I'm not sure how in-depth the article is about him). The other, however is an interview. While interviews can be good sources, in terms of showing notability they are pretty much worthless, since they are considered primary sources. imdb.com is non-reliable source, as are any sources without editorial oversight, like FB, Twitter, Reddit, LinkedIn, etc. For notability purposes, Discogs is not a good source, neither are those that have a connection to the subject (galleries where his art is shown, commercial sites, etc.). I did searches on News, Newspapers, Books, Highbeam, and Scholar and only found a single mention. I also belong to a site (courtesy of WP) called Newspapers.com, but can't access from my work computer. I'll look there when I get in this evening (I'm in the mountain time zone in the US). I don't know any editors who I could call on to help with South American references, but my advice is to try and find sources through the search engines which focus there. Bottom line is that, assuming the one Rolling Stone article is good, you'd need another 1-2 like that to show notability. I hope this helps. Onel5969 TT me 16:09, 18 February 2016 (UTC)

Hi Tessthepuppy - First, sorry no one responded to you at the help desk, that usually doesn't happen. Now about your article. There are several issues with it. First, there is the notability issue. This could be the biggest problem, but unless there's more than local coverage, she might not pass the notability criteria. Take a look at WP:BIO. Second, references don't have to be available on-line, that simply makes it easier for researchers. But if you use offline resources, be as complete as possible in citing them. You can take a look at WP:CITE and WP:CIT on citations and how to format them. They also need to be reliable sources. Stuff like birth certificates, etc aren't considered reliable sources. However, a link to a death certificate on a reliable site is. Third, there are large portions of your article which are not backed by citations. Fourth, is the tone of the article, using a familiar name like Kath is a no-no. After using the full name in the lead, you should only use the last name from that point on. Phrases like "the cause she loved," "it continues its valuable work," and "she reluctantly felt obliged," are all commentary, and shouldn't be included in an encyclopedia article. Hi Sfawcett - Wikipedia doesn't contain any original research. Because of this, everything in the encyclopedia needs to be able to be cited from another source. And those sources need to be reliable. So every assertion you make in your article needs to have a source, and whenever possible, those sources should be neutral. For example, you state in the draft, "Change Partners” was Champian’s first “live” CD; recorded live with her group over two nights at the Yardbird Suite (jazz club) in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada." Where did you learn that? That needs a citation. Sometimes it's okay to use non-neutral sources (like the artist's website), but only when the fact isn't subject to debate (like concert dates, which you do, and that's okay), but to use the artist's website to assert "she quickly learned the language of the music first-hand", that's not okay. But your article also suffers from several other issues. First, you have what is known as "raw links", for example, Performance History in the lead, or Stephen Fulton later in the article. All those have to go away. If the link is to something to prove an assertion in the article, then turn it into a citation, if not, get rid of it. Second, your article is chock full of commentary, like "Champian has developed her own unique swinging style over the years". Do not comment, simply state facts. I hope this helps. Hi Vstarov - It still suffers from a large POV issue. When you use phrases like "He has established himself in Singapore as an innovative traditional artist at ease with both classical and experimental styles combining both Chinese and Western methods," and "Lu has also developed his personal style of calligraphy." Those are commentary. Phrases like "Lu’s next artistic love," "Lu’s devotion to many years of calligraphy," and "Lu’s love of art started at a tender age of four," are all, again, commentary, and also show an informal style not found in an encyclopedia article. In addition to the style/commentary issues, there is also a referencing problem. In some instances you have 4 citations for a single fact (where 1 or 2 would do), and in many other instances you have no references, where they are needed. This is a blp (bio of a living person), at least I think it is, since there is no mention of his death. As such, every assertion needs a citation. After those two major problems, there are other smaller issues. For instance, the photo of him, that should really have the date in the caption. Also, you switch tenses, sometimes referring to him in the past tense, as in the lead, but in other places referring to him in the present. Finally, get rid of the citekill, use no more than 2 references for any fact. And please format your citations as per WP:CIT. Hope this helps. Onel5969 TT me 02:06, 22 February 2016 (UTC)

After the first review, I improved all the references, and they are all independent of the subject, as stipulated. I'm not sure where the continued problem lies, as the boilerplate review feedback is identical with the first time - ie not very helpful. If notability is the issue, then the evidence from multiple sources is that if the subject had not developed the mineral springs in the way he did, Cheltenham today would still be a very small town, and not a place of over 100,000 population, home to famous horseraces, festivals etc etc. The Oxford Dictionary of National Biography has recently commissioned an article on him, so he meets their criteria OK. Anyway, advice welcome, please. I have a couple of images ready to be added. regards J

Questions of page not being accepted

Hello,

I have a question about why the page just submitted for review was not accepted based on not enough 3rd party reliable references. The page is named "Mike Dubois". My user name is Designlab1008.

The references which describe and define Mike DuBois's notoriety and impact on the art toward music industry include articles in the Wall Street Journal, The Woodstock Film Festival site,The Levon Helm website and the Poughkeepsie Journal, along with others.

One would think these are independent and notable sources.

I noticed on a number of wiki pages the note that starts with "This biographical article needs additional citations for verification. Please help by adding reliable sources...." at the top of the page. Is it possible to have this at the top of the "Mike DuBois" page and have it posted? I am in pursuit of additional references and I may have one from the notable basketball star and sports broadcaster, Bill Wallton. he is updating his website and possibly will be mentioning the work that Mike DuBois has done for his soon to be released biography.

Hi Designlab1008 - There are two issues with your draft. First, is the sourcing. You have blogs, press releases, non-independent sources, and articles which just briefly mention him. The one Poughkeepsie article is nice. You 2-3 more like that, preferably not from more local papers, in order to show his notability. The second is the tone of the article. If someone were truly "iconic", you'd have thousands of articles to choose from. That's called a peacock word. You need to get rid of all those types of phrases. Regarding your last question about tagging the article... articles that are tagged like that are being looked at to be deleted, so there's no point in moving something to the mainspace which will most likely be deleted. Thanks for the feedback! I think my problem is that much of the major work Steven has done was in the 80s and 90s before the internet, and so it's difficult to verify. Hosted on vimeo are the films he's done for PBS, Court TV, UNICEF, the NYC Food Bank and others. Some include big name actors like Meryl Streep and Margot Kidder. Could I somehow link this as evidence? Steve is clearly a person of notoriety, I'd really like to get him on wikipedia as he's contributed so much to the non-profit film world. Please let me know what I can do to make this happen.

Hi Andy. There are a few issues with the article. First is the sourcing, or lack thereof. This is a blp (bio of a living person), so it has a very high standard of citation required. Virtually every assertion needs a citation. For example, you have lengthy lists of credits, all without citation. Do you have offline sources? Those are okay to use, just make sure to include as much info as possible, see WP:CITE and WP:CIT, those will help. Vimeo is not a reliable source (neither is YouTube, Twitter, Reddit, etc.), so you couldn't really use those (I know, when I first started to edit on WP, I attempted to use Vimeo on an article about an Emmy-award winning producer, and got slammed for it). Oh, and there is a slight informal an stilted slant to the article. Beware of using WP:PEACOCK terms, and making commentary/observation. Just state facts. Hope this helps. Hi Staffer55 - With the current condition of most of the citations, it is difficult to ascertain their validity, or their usefulness. Please see WP:CIT on how to correctly format citations. Of the ones I could evaluate, most were not independent of the subject. In addition, the vast majority of the article is cited by only two sources, the rest of the references are simply WP:CITEKILL. As a blp (bio of a living person), almost every assertion requires a citation from an independent source (well, most of them should be from independent sources, but family stuff, etc. can be from sources like the artist's own website). Dear reviewer, Thank you for taking time to look over my submission. This is a page for Frank Garvan, mathematician, who is a prominent figure in modern number theory. Most famously, Garvan is responsible for co-discovering the crank function in partition theory, which is a big deal and a widely-praised discovery made with George Andrews (the preeminent number theorist of our era), who was Garvan's PhD advisor.

Note that "crank of a partition" has its own Wikipedia page (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crank_of_a_partition) and Garvan is credited on that page. I feel that the "Crank of a partition page" is not complete without a link to the Wiki for one of the crank's co-discoverers.

I added a reference from an article by Richard Askey, another towering figure in modern mathematics, detailing Garvan's role in the discovery of the crank function. I do not know Garvan personally, and provided the best references I could to show his importance. I believe it is vital that Garvan should have his own Wiki as he is an important figure in recent mathematics history, whose work (now classic) is the subject of great interest for other researchers in the field.

Hi Nupur2000 - The sources you use are either non-independent, are press releases, or are not in-depth enough coverage to show notability. For example, #9, from the times of India, is a press release which has simply been regurgitated as an alleged news article. Hi Jessica Williamson - Yes, you would need a citation for each of the names you list. But I wouldn't recommend having such a list, that actually makes it more difficult to show notability. It makes it appear that you are attempting to say someone is notable because they know notable people. I think this person is notable, it is just that you don't show it, and don't have the right references to back it up. For example, in your article you state, "Key productions include: Three Sisters (Young Vic, 2012) which won the Critics Theatre Award in 2012 for Best Director". Do you see what's wrong with that statement? The play didn't win Best Director, Andrews did. That helps point to his notability. The sentence before that, about his appearances at different theaters, all that needs citations. I think you should expand that section. Create 1-3 sentences on each of those things, and cite them. You're getting this information from somewhere, tell readers/researchers where it comes from. I also formatted the first citation to give you an example of how they should be formatted. You can find out more about formatting citations at WP:CIT. Feel free to let me know after you work on it, and I'll take another look. But be patient. Hi Sslatt - First, almost every reference you have is either from a non-reliable source (Facebook, blogs), from non-independent sources (brandcenter, cohnwolfe, Gays With Kids, etc.), a press release (prbuzz, PRNewswire), or by the subject (HuffPo). None of those help show his notability. We need in-depth articles from independent articles. Your article also suffers from an informal style (e.g. don't use his first name), and a POV issue. Phrases like "a very personal recollection," "the impact that a compelling and consistent brand experience," and "building worldwide capabilities in strategic planning, branding, and creative development," are all designed to promote the subject, rather than simply telling the reader information about the subject. Hi Sloanesabath - It can take several weeks for a reviewer to evaluate an article, especially one like yours, which has so many citations, most of which are not independent of the subject, are aren't in-depth about the subject, but instead merely mention him. Your article also suffers from a slight POV issue. Statements like "He was also instrumental" or "restoration of the Beacon Theatre to its original grandeur", or "works closely with the Cablevision executive team to help set corporate direction and oversee major business partnerships and negotiations" are stuff you see in promotional material, not encyclopedia articles. I won't review it at this point in time, (I usually let another editor take a swing at an article before I go back to it). The Domartini quote in the Founding paragraph; the last sentence in that same section; second sentence in "pay per view"; second sentence in software as service; the entire services section. There is one issue (but that wouldn't stop it from moving to mainspace), and that's the formatting of the citations. At some point, please take a look at WP:CIT, and properly format them. I really despair. There are over 10,000 UK charities using the free Total Giving platform and benefiting from it, and I am unable to add it to Wikipedia. Its like a minefield I have no idea what to do and there is 0 help there, if it is there, its so complexly presented that makes no sense to me. This platform is raising millions for charities completely free. Rzahdeh,perhaps I can help out a little. Thee are two problems. First, WP does not judge articles on the basis of the intrinsic importance of the subjects. It only judges by whether there are references providing substantial coverage from third-party independent reliable sources, not press releases or mere announcements. Not a single one of your four references was about the subject. They merely mention the subject in the final sentence, which was always some variation of "anyone wishing to make a donation can log on to www.totalgiving.co.uk/appeal/.... " The second problem is promotionalism . Your article was an advertisement for the platform, devoted to explaining why it was better than other methods. Those associated with the group presumably do think so, but it's just based on their own view of themselves that they wish to promote to others. That's advertising. Requesting assistance because my article "Bruce Holsapple" was rejected. I'm not sure I understand any of the three reasons -- "1 - the sourcing; not enough, and not properly formatted; 2 - the structure; and 3 - the tone - very POV."

1. Besides the subject's own published works and a number of separately published articles about the subject, what else would be required? The formatting issue completely escapes me, I'm afraid. Since I have no coding or html skills, I find the instructions almost impossible to understand.

2. Since my sections mimic other live Wikipedia sections on similar subjects, I'm not sure what structure deviates from accepted.

3. Can you point to sentences or passages that seem particularly "POV," which I guess means point of view. Is this referring to the way the sentences are cast, or to content, or some combination of the two?

Hi Daw20 - regarding #1 - sources have to be independent of the subject, so his own work cannot be used as a reference. Regarding outside references and formatting, that's why I gave you links. No html skills are required, please read the links. Regarding formatting citations, the best one is WP:CIT. Regarding #2 - You have no sections, it's just one long essay. Thank you for your comments; on reflection you were right about under-linking, and not just for readers from outside the United Kingdom; even the UK has moved on from the politics and electoral practices of the 1830s, so the context/interpretation a native might apply to some things now might differ from the context/interpretation that actually applied in the 1830s. I have therefore linked extensively, and now find myself wondering if I haven't over-done it. Can you please have another look and see what you think now ? Always tricky when you are given good advice and reject it, but I think you come at the relationship between church and state from a US perspective, with the issue having been largely settled by the Founding Fathers and a written constitution. The relationship between church and state was central to UK politics in the 1830s and long after (anything that might affect it - such as the 1843 Factory Education Bill- was politically toxic; it's why the UK didn't have state education until 1870) and is a non-issue now, so I feel it is one of the aspects of Oldham politics the casual reader is most likely to casually misunderstand. (As regards intelligibility to non-natives, once you go beyond basics it's nothing but trouble: for example, as far as I am aware we don't 'walk the line' much in these parts (not since they brought in the breathalyser); and the US sense of the phrase we are most familiar with is (thanks to Johnny Cash) is 'keeping our nose clean' ; from context I suspect I should translate your use of the phrase into UK idiom as 'treading a fine line' - if only because that's roughly my view as well.)Regards Rjccumbria (talk) 20:59, 27 February 2016 (UTC)

Hi Minorobjects - no, that's not the way to do it. The way you could show it in the body is if you use the phrase, "widely cited", cite that to the Google Scholar page (instead of using the reference to her department bio - department bios are worthless when it comes to proving assertions, since they are not independent sources - what they are good for is proving she worked there, or proving she held a certain position, etc.). However, she has a very low citation count, her highest count is only 165, and then it drops off precipitously, with only two other articles in the very low double digits. Normally, it would have to be in the 1000s (or high 00s) for her to be considered "widely cited". Looking into her, doubtful she'll meet the notability requirements for academics. Hope this helps. Sure Pbsouthwood - Always enjoy helping out an inexperienced editor. That's a canned response when a reviewer selects the merge option. The material which is cited in the draft would be better suited to be combined to the Decompression theory article, in the Deep Stops section. The original research and/or uncited material in the draft is what would make a separate article appropriate, but when you take that stuff out, what's left should be merged. Take it easy. Thank you for taking the time to review my submission again. I've put quite a bit of work into this article and I'd hate to see that go to waste. Therefore, I'd like to get some more feedback on my secondary sources, which I understand to be the crux of why this article hasn't been approved. I realize that some of my sources are primary, since interviews in industry publications are the main source of coverage for record producers with enough public interest to warrant such contributions. However, I have also added four secondary publications (five if you count both Sound on Sound articles). Again I realize these aren't all large news outlets, however, coverage in such outlets for music producers is rare at best and the publications which I have cited adhere to your standards of reliability. Comparing my submissions to other, already approved articles on comparable record producers, who also have Grammy awards and multiple gold and platinum records, shows that the extent of secondary coverage of Ben H. Allen III is on par. In addition to the verifiable awards and his instrumental role in dozens of relevant and notable recordings (most of them have articles on Wikipedia, which also mention him as producer/composer/ writer), I'm wondering whether asking for more than four secondary sources for record producers is a fair hurdle in this field. I also wonder if it is sensible for the platform to have dead ends for people who are researching notable recordings, hoping to find out more about the production and writing personnel involved. Furthermore, Allen meets the majority of the notability standards specific to music "composers" and "others": https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Notability_(music). I understand that there can't be a set of criteria for every specific role in the music industry, but the role of the modern record producer is related to that of the composer, and if you disagree, he would certainly fall under the "others" category. By those standards, I have provided ample evidence (allmusic credits, reviews with name mentions and articles) that Allen is credited with producing and composing on many notable productions, of which many have won either Grammy or RIAA awards, or have been included in best of lists in some of the most culturally relevant music publications today (Rolling Stone, Pitchfork and others). All of this is included in my page references, as I tried to take the criteria for notability in the music category into account. Can you advise on why you still think that these criteria are not met and what I would have to improve in order to get this article approved?

I highly appreciate your feedback and hope you can get me on track to finish my work on this successfully.
