Lilitu[edit]

Lilitu = Akkadian?

Could you provide a source? Several around the net, including my professor, gave it as Sumerian.

Yeago 18:45, 11 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Sumerian LÍL (LIL2) means 'air, wind,' etc, also this demon (incl. its influence as a disease - I recall it has been tentatively identified as the sudden death syndrome of babies). Unfortunately, I don't have better sources than Halloran at hand right now (Sumerian Lexicon).
Akkadian lilitu is formed by adding female -t to this root, which appears also as lillu(m). "A Concise Dictionary of Akkadian", Black et al., 2nd ed.: "Lillu(m) II Bab. 1. (a demon) 2. (a god)". And, what's more to the point: "lilium, lilû; f. lilitu(m), and ardat lilî (storm demons) O/jB [lilû = LÍL.LA.EN.NA/NU; LÚ.LÍL.LÁ; lilitu = MUNUS.LÍL.LÁ; KI.SIKIL.LÍL.LÁ; ardat lilî = KI.SIKIL.LÍL.LÁ; KI.SIKIL.UD.DA.KAR.RA]; singly, pl. (lilû), in pair lilû lilitu, and as a triad; OB ina sit lilîm "at the rising of the l."; < Sum.; -> kiskilili; wardatum."
Though lilitu looks pretty obviously Semitic (l-l-' + -t), I suppose it could have been loaned back into Sumerian in later periods, as there's a lot of similar material.
I'll try to check this when I come near some library again, in a week or two. Maybe I can cite some textual reference, by then.
Besides, lilitu should be written with a lengthened second i, except I don't know how to do it, as well as sadeh. Help appreciated. --Oop 19:45, Nov 11, 2004 (UTC)
Fascinating. I think you should definitely put something together to make an 'Etymology of Lilitu' section on that page. I almost did it myself but perhaps you can whip something up better. Arcesilaus[edit]

About two months ago, I put in my best guess as to the badly OCR'ed Greek on Arcesilaus based on some quick research into his philosophical concerns. I neglected to look at the discussion page there until recently, and, seeing you were interested in it, thought you might want to look at the page now. → (AllanBz ) 02:53, 23 August 2005 (UTC)

Translation Request[edit]

I beleive ' regitaj ' is an Estonian word. Could you translate it into English?

It definitely isn't. I don't know any Estonian word ending in -j; by that pretty unusual marker, I would suspect Esperanto or some Indian language. If you could provide some context, maybe I could figure out some similar root. (E.g. regi is a certain type of sledge in Estonian, but that's as similar to regitaj as Latin regulus.) --Oop 10:13, 7 March 2006 (UTC)
OK, many thanks for helping though. --Mark 20:43, 6 April 2006 (UTC)

Small Wikipedias[edit]

Just to let you know, we are currently planning on running your op-ed this week. :-) Ed [talk] [majestic titan] 08:09, 10 August 2012 (UTC)

Oh. So, I should review it quickly. Do you think it would be important to shorten it, or would some subtitles and maybe a picture or two do? --Oop (talk) 08:53, 10 August 2012 (UTC)
A picture or two would definitely be helpful to break up the text, and subtitles could also help break it into manageable chunks. I'd really like a picture, but I'll leave the subtitles up to you. Ed [talk] [majestic titan] 20:17, 10 August 2012 (UTC)
Take a look. I'll be on a Wikiexpedition and mostly offline, though, until Sunday night. --Oop (talk) 00:55, 11 August 2012 (UTC)
Thanks! I may remove one image to make the white man's burden image bigger, but otherwise that looks great. Ed [talk] [majestic titan] 07:27, 11 August 2012 (UTC)

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Palestina, Peru, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Orange (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Armenian Estonian two week collaboration[edit]

Hello. You know last weeks we had collaboration project with Ukrainian Wikipedia in fact the same what you had with Ukrainian Wikipedia. I have suggestion to start Estonian Armenian collaboration. I am looking forward for your answer. Best.SMM 17:11, 12 March 2013 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by SusikMkr (talkcontribs)

I like that thought. Wrote a bit longer answer on my Armenian userpage. --Oop (talk) 18:42, 12 March 2013 (UTC)

Kursiiv[edit]

Tervitused! Võtsid mõni aeg tagasi eesti vikis sõna Benedictus XVI artikli kohta, et seal pealkirjad kursiivis. Eeldasin, et muudad neid ise, kuid tõid põhjuseks artikli pikkuse. Kas saaksid tunduvalt lühemas paavst Franciscuse artiklis eesti vikis pealkirjad vastavalt eesti keele õigekirjareeglitele sättida, et teaksin millele tugineda? Kalev Kask 14:19, 26 March 2013 (UTC)

Oehh. Okei. --Oop (talk) 07:56, 27 March 2013 (UTC)

Ikkagi on küsimus, kas eesti viki Franciscuse artikli publikatsioonide osa on õieti vormistatud? Kalev Kask 07:30, 17 April 2013 (UTC)

--Oop (talk) 21:28, 19 April 2013 (UTC)

Work[edit]

I remember painstakingly doing a heavy copy-edit job on your text for the Signpost last year, unacknowledged. Tony (talk) 13:28, 5 April 2013 (UTC)

Well, many thanks! I would actually very much like to see what exactly you did there. I've been a copyeditor for a decade, so I know all too well how hard it can be to get the grip on writing in a foreign language. I'd be happy to get a chance to improve my English. --Oop (talk) 13:32, 5 April 2013 (UTC)
It was more a reaction to your blunt "Check your facts" at the Signpost's Special report, which I found very negative and unwarranted. Tony (talk) 14:23, 5 April 2013 (UTC)
Ah, I'm afraid it's a cultural feature. Estonians are notorious for their tendency to talk bluntly about the business, without thinking about introductions, milder expressions or possible misunderstandings. We're also very bad in smalltalk, and if you ask "How are you?" then an Estonian will actually tell you how he is (usually, not very well). A weird kind of people, I know. Sorry. :) --Oop (talk) 19:28, 5 April 2013 (UTC)
P. S. But I'd still like to see the copyedit, in case you have it somewhere. :) --Oop (talk) 19:29, 5 April 2013 (UTC)
It offended me. Tony (talk) 00:01, 6 April 2013 (UTC)

Article upgrade assistance request (Pre-translation stage)[edit]

Seasons Greetings,

This is in reference to a relatively new umbrella article on en-wikipedia named Ceremonial pole. Ceremonial pole is a human tradition since ancient times; either existed in past at some point of time, or still exists in some cultures across global continents from north to south & from east to west. Ceremonial poles are used to symbolize a variety of concepts in several different world cultures.

Through article Ceremonial pole we intend to take encyclopedic note of cultural aspects and festive celebrations around Ceremonial pole as an umbrella article and want to have historical, mythological, anthropological aspects, reverence or worships wherever concerned as a small part.

While Ceremonial poles have a long past and strong presence but usually less discussed subject. Even before we seek translation of this article in global languages, we need to have more encyclopedic information/input about Ceremonial poles from all global cultures and languages. And we seek your assistance in the same.

Since other contributors to the article are insisting for reliable sources and Standard native english; If your contributions get deleted (for some reason like linguistics or may be your information is reliable but unfortunately dosent match expectations of other editors) , please do list the same on Talk:Ceremonial pole page so that other wikipedians may help improve by interlanguage collaborations, and/or some other language wikipedias may be interested in giving more importance to reliablity of information over other factors on their respective wikipedia.

This particular request is being made to you since your user name is listed in Wikipedia:Translators available list.

Thanking you with warm regards Mahitgar (talk) 05:34, 24 October 2015 (UTC)
