hello...the statement under this topic was laughable, because animal courtship is infrequently observed; HOWEVER, i didnt mean to delete the topic. this is actually a very important topic that links to many biological sites. ill give a try at saying it properly ;) cheersAnlace 04:48, 11 February 2006 (UTC)

varying quality[edit]

I understand the intent, but to me it sounds a bit critical and out of place in the introduction. Quality assessments are difficult to make on Wikipedia anyway. I think it would make more sense in a section on his short stories or the history of his writing jobs for money. Best, Tfine80 21:58, 19 January 2006 (UTC)

cat: Living People[edit]

Sir, while I respect your opinion on the matter, I am not making edits to impress one editor, but rather to build the encyclopedia based on the wishes of all the Wikipedia collaborators. If consensus is demonstrated to be against the category, I will be the first to help remove the tags (although I imagine that a bot would likely be employed by others with coding skills greater than mine). Until that time as such consensus is demonstrated, I will continue to add what I view as constructive edits. BTW, what category (for sorting purposes) could be MORE useful than one that denotes that various subjects are still extant? Regards, Dick Clark 15:27, 20 January 2006 (UTC)

Also, please not that Jimbo Wales has weighed in on this issue at the category talk page.
This is the appropriate page for discussion of exactly how this category should be named and organized. The existence or non-existence of this category is not optional.--User:Jimbo Wales 20:49, 19 January 2006 (UTC)

Stop removing useful links[edit]

I have seen you remove 2 useful external links now that were to sites that provide a great resource to people wanting to visit a specific destination. These sites are not commercial beyond contextual advertisements that may or may not make the site authors any money. Why is it that you insist on calling any external link a spam link? Have you taken the care to read through the sites that you call spam? Please do so before you remove a link - you may learn that there are useful sites outside of Wikipedia - and heaven forbid if the site owners try to pay for the cost of running the sites.

Response to Pavel on Bali links - I agree that Planet Mole may be too broad. BaliBlog is far more than a chit-chat site - at least more than the "I've been to Bali Too" site that is also linked to that page. If you get some time, read around the BaliBlog site - there is alot of good information. It was just upsetting to see you call them spam in the Edit Summary

List[edit]

JJStroker and I have made an agreement to remove the red links and place them on a type of "To Do" page. So that way more people will notice (maybe) and they can come and fill up the links. I don't know much about the notability of these people but after plugging a few into Google, I'm pretty sure most of them can afford a nicely sized article. Antidote 02:14, 24 January 2006 (UTC)

Also, after I get done working on List of Serbs, I can head over to List of Czechs and start making some articles, deleting whoever I can't find a source for. How's that? I may need some translation help though. Antidote 02:19, 24 January 2006 (UTC)

Sorry, I couldn't tell if that answer was a yes or no on the article making/helping with the article making. Antidote 02:27, 24 January 2006 (UTC)
Completly dropping out the names is a shame, but I see no problem with just moving them to say - the talk page. If an article is made from there it could just be moved to the main page. Antidote 02:36, 24 January 2006 (UTC)
I found some time to do a few articles if you wish. It may be best however if you choose which you think are the most important to make for now. Drop me a list on my talk page if you can. Thanks. Antidote 03:20, 27 January 2006 (UTC)

Prague Spring[edit]

Hi. Perhaps I did write a bit too much, but that is only because I feel more familiar with this particular section of the events. I think it is relevant to the story: Romania almost got into war at that point, and over the same issue. In fact, public oppinion in your country was, for a brief moment, finding hope in a Romanian friend (I also attempted to explain why Ceausescu's attitude was more conjectural than anything). They aired archive footage on some Romanian station a while back (I also have a description of it in a Romanian historical magazine): it was a, well, propaganda film (not the pejorative meaning of "propaganda"), one shot by the tv station in your country during those days (I believe it had taken refuge someplace in Western Czechia, and later crossed the border). It had a voice-over that spoke perfect Romanian, with only the tiniest of accents. The very emotional man was praising Socialist brothers for opposing imperialism etc. During this, they showed footage of the invasion. I think this attitude is unique, and deserves a detailed account of parallelisms. For a while (and even way before the events, with the much media-covered visits by Tito and Ceausescu to Prague) it looked like a three-pronged alliance had been formed. Since the article depicts the prudent response in the West, it should also show where Czechoslovak hopes were being directed. Of course (as noted), the other two states had very different agendas. This being said (and not to mean that my phrases cannot be trimmed a bit), the article could do with more details for the events themselves. An account of the clandestine airings of your tv channels, reference to the prolific graffiti works and posters (perhaps many of them are not public domain), one to the themes in such mediums (from the weeping Lenin to the blunt "Ivan, go home"), etc. - all of these could contribute while allowing my paragraph to remain and not seem "obese" in comparison. To summarise: a Romanian connection was of capital importance, the Romanian response was a major event in itself, and the article could do with more insights in its other chapters. Sorry for taking up this much room on your page. Waiting to hear from you. Dahn 07:51, 24 January 2006 (UTC)

PS The article as it is fails to even mention Jan Palach. Dahn 07:53, 24 January 2006 (UTC)

Also, how about having a list of major figures who exiled themselves after the events? I for one would be very interested in seeing one.Dahn 09:11, 25 January 2006 (UTC)

Why are you talking about Praque Spring and I can't find any article? Should I look up Praque? I do after I leave this note here. If so, I think the Praque Spring would deserve a separate article. Here is something to add: Alan Ginsburgh was elected King of May by Prague students but was not allowed to leave his plane. So he couldn't join the students and celebrate with them. I checked, yes it's there. [2] Just passing.LeaNder 18:00, 2 November 2006 (UTC)

Fatherland[edit]

Good point. The term "otčina" appears quite rarely nowadays, so it did not come on my mind, but it exists therefore should be mentioned on such a list.

I think the reason, why somebody founded this entry, was to gather only languages, where the term is derived from the word "father", not to gather translations into all possible languages. Despite this it can still seem quite useless for most people, but I can imagine that somebody might be interested in such a list.

to be or not to be... not only hamlet asked this[edit]

Have a good day and sorry to bozher you. After some individuals started to "discuss" the present situation in the cs:wiki on the pages of Meta etc. Once more again (see ) I would just like to ask you for help for the cs:wiki. Maybe I will bother you but I mean this seriously.
As you probably may know, I was a user (since May 2004) and also a sysop (since Nov 2004) in the cs:wiki. After I have been several times heavilly attacked by some individuals saying I have been a collaborator and bolschevik member of the communist secret police StB, and after these people did start to publish this worldwide in internet (beside this: my family was persecuted in CSSR, I was living in West Germany beeing active for the Opposition there), I requested to be desysopped and do not work for cs:wiki any more. By the way, in last days there were two members of arbcom who resigned and another sysop who requested his desysop. More users and sysops declared to stop their activities.
Nevertheless: Both groups of these people do continue their attack on the cs:wiki as a whole and I am afraid, that the cs:wiki is in a very difficult stage and I am not sure if it will manage this, as the last weeks and months showed, that their reactions on such attacks are very "human " and "democratic" – say kind, not resolute enough. The groups I speak about are:

  • cs:User:Vít Zvánovec and cs:User:Tompecina, first one now beeing arbitred, whom you maybe know from some other conflicts
  • certain Mr. Ross Hedvicek, in cs:wiki cs:User:Rosta, an emigree living in Florida, known as a notorious spammer (see cs:Ross Hedvíček) and mainly an extremist author of very controversary statements on politics, with some dozens of people from his CS-Club (at least 10 are registered in cs:wiki); one of the worst internet culture I have ever seen

So this the situation. I would like to help cs:wiki in this difficult stage, as the attacks now reached the pages of Meta, and I will try to engage some steward like Anthere or Datrio to do something. But anyway, although I resigned as sysop in cs:wiki, i can tell you (or them) something and you can believe me or not. I know you as somebody who knows the czech community a bit and who can understand it, but somebody who is not engaged there. If you can a bit, see please at my page here, where you will find some links, and if you find something which could be helpful so comment it there, Anthere and Datrio or others will get the address as well.
Sorry for bothering you with this problems, but i think you could have some interest to solve it. For answers to me you can use only either my page in de:wiki de:Benutzer:-jkb- or the same in wikisource.org where I am still a sysop; my e-mail is deleted in all wikis but not in wikisource.org (at present). In the cs:wiki you can contact the bureaucrat cs:User:Ludek.
Thanks for listening to me and maybe for some help. -jkb- 19:24, 7 February 2006 (UTC)

Hi. Thx for your edit in Meta. In fact, you did not help quite much the matter (cs:wiki), but otherwise you renamed and reformulated my reasons why I decided not to work there. So, say, partially positive. Thanks, you will find me mostly in de:User:-jkb- or (I am not sure) oldwikisource:User:-jkb-. -jkb- 21:00, 7 February 2006 (UTC)

Hi. See e.g. [[3]]. - the fabulous George is Jiří Vaněk, some 1000x cited in internet. Be careful, everybody who joins their "discussion" is sooner or later a marxist confintal supporter of something... - - - Yes, I thank you for the invitation to participate here on en:wiki, and I also think, I will do it a bit (I think I should have some hundreds of edits here by the time), but obviously I will concentrate myself on the de:wiki as I live in Germany and can write a bit better in german than in english. But, anyway, I think about it and if I place something here, so you will get a message to improve the spelling :-). Good evening, -jkb- 23:43, 13 February 2006 (UTC)

Re: Patrin on Roma People[edit]

The issue I am concerned about with keeping the link is that it is not what is typically considered an acceptable primary source -- it's just some person's BLOG. Admittedly, it isn't necessarily being used as a primary source, but it would be better, I think, to stick to more reputable sources than individual efforts like this. --Improv 04:23, 9 February 2006 (UTC)

German Expulsion[edit]

I am a history student with a planned focus on Germany; I more than agree the topic is important to talk about, and knwo about. My problem is that the article poorly written by english-language encyclopedia standards that it cannot help anyone. In fact, in it's current state it is more destructive than helpful. Bohemians, Moravians, Czechs etc.[edit]

Thanks for your comments. At the Opera Project we normally follow the New Grove Dictionary of Opera when it comes to nationalities. (This is what we did in the case of Gassmann. Gluck is another example.) The idea is to use the affiliation that the individual himself/herself would have chosen (hence we use Flemish, Alsatian, Bohemian etc.), however this can admittedly be difficult to determine when musicians lived such international lives. Maybe Gassmann would have wanted to be called 'Viennese'? Kleinzach 09:52, 14 February 2006 (UTC)

Thanks. We would be delighted to have help with Czech entries, especially the haceks etc! "Nonsense"?[edit]

i'm quite puzzled as to why you think i am adding nonsense to wikipedia. The edits I made to the General Motors Corsa article are legitimate and illustrate the headlamps on the said vehicle and a modification to it. i realise i may have inadvertently removed two images and i was attempting to work out how to replace them when you rolled back my edits calling them nonsense.

this was a good faith edit genuinely made in the hope of improving the article, and I encourage you to look at the page on this, Wikipedia:Vandalism which says:

"Any good-faith effort to improve the encyclopedia, even if misguided or ill-considered, is not vandalism."

i assumed this was the only edit i had made until i checked my contributions and found some "strange" edits. i can only assume these were made by someone using my machine (i'm at college)

apart from accidentally removing two images which i later tried to replace, i fail to see how i added nonsense to the wikipedia when i am only a new user trying to learn and contribute to it. if this is how you treat all newbies then i fear for those joining the project.

i'd like to hear your thoughts on this. --Jizzm 15:31, 17 February 2006 (UTC)

Jesusism[edit]

The AfD on Jesusism was over unsourced, unverifiable, and possible hoax material. This time, Jag149 and Facts&moreFacts included sources. I have checked them out, and the connection appears tenuous at best. I have added {{fact}} tags where needed and cleaned up the formatting a bit. So far only one paragraph has been properly verified. If you do AfD this, I probably will support. Copysan 01:58, 18 February 2006 (UTC)

Asians in Czech Republic[edit]

Dĕkuji vam, Pavel. I remember you, we've spoken before! I don't have the exact number, but I assume this wiki-page link will help: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Overseas_Chinese. The page on Vietnamese people sources Vietnamese-Czechs at almost 25 000, though still a negligable number. You should fix the demographic page then, if you think it is that insufficient. Are you familiar with Praha? Are ethnic enclaves distinct in Praha, or are minorities spread all across the city? I have heard of the "Little Hanoi", but is it a distant part of the city? Until next time, take care. User:Le Anh-Huy

List of East European Jews[edit]

Well, they don't want to give up this stupid categorizing. What they've conceded so far is separate lists (they are linked to the main page). It's hard to convince American users that the world does not fold up neatly along categories, and that you have no chance of making a list short. For Chrissake, they have a List of Holocaust victims and a Category:Socialists! Hopefully, things'll get sorted out in time. What I resent about "Central" Europe is the inevitable notion that such a pattern is defining of "civilization" (I mean, the very notion and readiness to fit in it belongs to various nationalisms in the area); plus, mty own country is "orphan" - I mean, the same people designed a notional Balkans (according to the same wishful thinking), and decided that Romania does not belong in there. Alensha has had a great idea for this particular topic: that things be developed according to nation, and then linked to Europe. But, of course, she was told off. Dahn 21:27, 19 February 2006 (UTC)

AIV vs VIP[edit]

Hi Pavel Vozenilek. I noticed you added an entry to Vandalism in Progress. That page is only for very specific cases, as described by the page's guidelines. Your alert would be better placed on Administrator intervention against vandalism (WP:AIV), where it will usually be processed within minutes. Many alerts that are incorrectly placed on Vandalism in Progress are never dealt with, simply because they become old before an administrator gets to them. Thanks for your efforts. :) --lightdarkness (talk) 01:11, 20 February 2006 (UTC)

Diacritics for sorting keys of categories[edit]

It is better NOT to use diacritics for sorting key of categories. It sometimes results in quite funny arrangement of items, very unexpected for both Czech and English reader. Pavel Vozenilek 22:28, 20 February 2006 (UTC)

OK, thanks for the advice. Apart from that, to respond to your previous posting, I'm glad I'm not the only Czech person on the English Wikipedia. :-) I'll make every effort to add or expand some articles on Czech topics, mainly on literature or language. By the way, are the sorting keys of any use? Wouldn't it actually work even without them? (Not sure, just asking...) --Sebesta 22:47, 20 February 2006 (UTC)

Curzio Malaparte[edit]

I can't help more with the article, as my knowledge is meek. I think you are wrong abot categories: featured articles have many, and specific, cats; there are regular demands on Category:[insert country] writers to include people listed in more specific cats, so as to avoid overpopulation (which helps no one). I don't any cat link I posted there is redundant, and all offer a good insight. "Natives of..." is a common cat, and I tried to apply it to all articles I've been translating from Italian wiki (mainly, about Fascist personalities). Dahn 01:09, 21 February 2006 (UTC)

Czech Rep[edit]

Thankyou for your message.

I must disagree, a country's name does deserve to be at the top of an article on the country.

The use is minimal, but it is used, and the country's government says it is the name.

To say it "hasn't caught on in English" is not encyclopedic language and is vague. I have heard it several times, and it is a reintroduction of an old term.

x-ref between Black Patch Park and Roma People[edit]

Dear Pavel

You wish to remove my cross reference to Roma people in my entry on Black Patch Park. I think I understand your reasons but i wonder if i could say a little more on this subject which is rather dear to my heart and may perhaps persuade you that the entry was not a casual one, but I do realise this is a v.sensitive issue. The history of this park - threatened with being built over - revolves around the way the Romany were evicted from it in the 1900s. A long term friend of my late father - a Gypsy and campaigner for Gypsy rights and author of a book on Gypsies of the New Forest - Len Smith - has told me that Black Patch Park is well known in Romany History in UK. We now have the irony that the present campaign to save the park is being assisted by the descendents of the very Romany families who were forcibly evicted from the Black Patch to create a park for new industrial workers. This is a story of reconciliation that runs through the campaign to save this lovely green space with its long traditions as a refuse and settlement for Gypsy people. Is this case not worthy of a x-reference between Black Patch and Roma people? By the way it was Len who vetted my original account and said "Gypsy" was polite - if used with a capital G. Kind regards and thank you for your consideration. Simon - excuse me if this entry is incorrect by Wiki rules. I started only yesterday. s.j.baddeley@bham.ac.uk Sibadd

CFD voting[edit]

I noticed that in CFD you left a comment indicating you were voting that a number of odd, empty categories created by newbie User:Oscark should be deleted, but didn't actually affix your vote to them individually, presumably because you assumed this would be a no-contest vote. Similarly I didn't bother to vote because it seemed obvious they'd be got rid of. However, to my great surprise, a number of "Keep" votes have emerged, and to prevent any confusion it might be worth you actually going through the formality of affixing your vote individually to the categories you wanted deleted. Unfortunately, confusion caused by informal voting on disputed or contentious AFDs/CFDs is a grave cause of Wikistress! TheGrappler 21:24, 23 February 2006 (UTC)

Transport[edit]

There are 59 countries which use "transport", which is quite a lot more than none. CalJW 22:15, 23 February 2006 (UTC)

Is this true?[edit]

Hi Pavel, can you look at this edit? [5] It might be true, and it's certainly rather funny if it is. Thanks! Antandrus (talk) 02:28, 24 February 2006 (UTC)

Well, I'm not Pavel, but I'm also native czech speaker. It really could be translated this way but only by some software translator ... because it absolutely misses the point - it is translated without context (except for Harant is really Bastard). Furthermore the only place where it can be seen is on czech joke sites, so I think it's not "official" translation.

Dates[edit]

I know you feel that way - you've stated that opinion elsewhere. It's patently clear, however, that there's no consensus either way, and I very much object to people trying to force their opinion on others. If you want to discuss a compromise on this that can appease both sides, I'm all ears, but if you're just going to support this because you personally like date links, then I'm afraid I'm not very interested. Ambi 04:26, 24 February 2006 (UTC)

There's a very simple solution to that: convince Bobblewik to turn off his bot and concentrate on undisputed areas until a resolution is reached. In the meantime, I'm disinclined to let him get away with changing formats across the entire encyclopedia because of delays caused by his own refusal to discuss anything. Thanks!

Hi, thanks for your voting on my RFA. It has finished with the result 88/14/9, and I am promoted. I am really overwhelmed with the amount of support I have got. With some of you we have edited many articles as a team, with some I had bitter arguments in the past, some of you I consider to be living legends of Wikipedia and some nicks I in my ignorance never heard before. I love you all and I am really grateful to you.

If you feel I can help you or Wikipedia as a human, as an editor or with my newly acquired cleaning tools, then just ask and I will be happy to assist. If you will feel that I do not live up to your expectation and renegade on my promises, please contact me. Maybe it was not a malice but just ignorance or a short temper. Thank you very mach, once more! abakharev 07:34, 24 February 2006 (UTC)

Howdy[edit]

Hello Pavel! Regarding the questioned edit to East Colonisation, it is part of translated text from de:Deutsche Ostsiedlung (the Schlesien section). User:Imiraven did the initial translations, followed by the edits by 203.160.1.47; it is possible that Imiraven was accidentally logged out when the larger section was added. Regardless of the actual translator, the edits do seem to have been done in good faith. I will try to wikify and copyedit the material when I have time.

Regarding adminship, it is not something I have really given much thought to. I approach it the same way Piotrus does- having the mop and bucket is useful, but not that big a deal. I'm not terribly familiar with the guides listed at the top of RfA yet, so I need to understand the listed policies first. Right now would not be a good time for me to undergo the procedure, but I will certainly consider it once I have more free time. I do thank you for considering me worthy of adminship. Klement Gottwald[edit]

Ahoj Pavle,
I have been doing some research on Klement Gottwald who was born in Dedice and then found that in 1683 Kaspar Gottwald from Domasov was burned on stake on suspicion of heresy. How far is Domasov from Dedice and do you think that Kaspar could have been among the ancestors of Klement Gottwald? Best Wishes, David Cruise

Hi Pavel,
Thank you for the information about Domasovs. I had no idea that there are several villages with this name. I know this would be next to impossible to prove reliably, it just seems an amazing coincidence. Take care, David Cruise 16:23, 25 February 2006 (UTC)

Lída Baarová[edit]

Thanks for your comment. I'll explain the issue. This article reads like a romantized story. It is as if a history teacher is telling a story in front of a classroom...Phrases like

In Berlin she met Gustav Fröhlich, Leonardo DiCaprio of the German cinema,;
Lída Baarová's spellbinding beauty;
Lida's magic beauty;
Joseph Goebbels never forgot Lída, nor did she forget him.;
Her filmography bears testimony to the courage and determination with which she overcame the overwhelming odds she faced during most of her life.

just don't fit an encyclopedia.Weather rain.pngSoothingR 07:09, 25 February 2006 (UTC)

Thank you for that point; I've reinserted them. Keep in mind that my revert's only purpose was to remove the systematic bias from the article, I never meant to remove anything else. If there's other stuff (apart from the POV) which you would like to see return in the article, which I have failed to notice, feel free to add it back.Weather rain.pngSoothingR 07:35, 3 March 2006 (UTC)

Death of Joseph Stalin and Klement Gottwald[edit]

Hi Pavel,
Thank you for your comments. They motivated me to append two subnotes to the article and to give more references. On the personal note, my sister who lives in the Netherlands used to be married to a Czech guy. Many years ago, while visiting, I mentioned this issue. Her husband got red in his face, started to scream that I lie, and kicked me out of the house. He is dead now, but I still remember this event vividly. I do not think my remarks will stay on the Wikipedia too long. I put them there more or less as trial baloons to observe the reaction of the Czech community. Some good pruning you did on list of Czechs :); just make sure not to delete any red links that may have the potential for a good article. Nick Peros Wikipedia article[edit]

Hi Pavel,

Thank you for your note to me re. the Nick Peros Wikipedia article that I have recently contributed. The Nick Peros article was contributed because Nick Peros is a notable contemporary classical composer that meets Wikipedia's notability guidelines, not as a vehicle for promotion.

In the notability guidelines for music, Wikipedia states that any artist that has had a record certified gold or higher in at least one large or medium-sized country meets notability requirements. CRIA is the Canadian Recording Industry Association and is the body that giverns Record Certifictaion in Canada. If you go to the following link on the CRIA website:

http://www.cria.ca/gold/0903_g.php

you can verify that O Canada- A Canadian Celebration is certified Platinum, as stated in the last paragraph of the Wikipedia Nick Peros article. Platinum Certification is a higher certifictaion than Gold, and as such meets that notability guideline.

In your your comments on the notability notice that you mention in the history section of the article, you refer to “claims of positive criticism”, implying that the positive criticisms listed in the article may not be accurate. For each critique listed in the article I have included a citation reference noting the name of the publication, the name of the reviewer and the date of publication. Most of these critiques/reviews are from hard copy newspaper reviews, however one of these critiques is from Classics Today. Classics Today is an internationally recognized and peer reviewed classical music site that focuses on critique and review of classical CD’s, and is often cited as a source for reliable and professional classical music critique by artists and major labels alike. If you go to the following link:

http://www.classicstoday.com/review.asp?ReviewNum=3538

you can read the entire Classics Today review of the Nick Peros Motets CD which is excerpted in the Nick Peros Wikipedia article.

Wikipedia’s notability guidelines for Music also state that for composers, the composer has been the subject of a biography published as a book, or has several articles by at least 2 different authors in the peer reviewed publications.

As a composer, Nick Peros is the subject of a number of major articles in peer reveiwed and recognized music and arts publications. One such article was published in the national Canadian Arts Magazine Perfroming Arts Magazine – the Nick Peros article was in fact the cover story for that issue. You can read the article in full at the following link:

http://www.looksmartclassical.com/p/articles/mi_m1319/is_n3_v31/ai_20931302

Nick Peros was also the cover story for Wholenote Magazine’s September 1999 issue- I was unable to find a link to the article itself, however, if you visit the following link:

http://www.thewholenote.com/wholenote_sep_99/musician_midst.html

you will see that the Nick Peros Wholenote cover story is affirmed in this article which appeared in the same September 1999 issue as the Nick Peros cover story (see last sentence of second last paragraph of that article as listed on the above link: She thinks composers should present their own concerts, both as a practical way of getting performed and as a way of developing an audience for their work. (Interestingly, this is exactly what Nick Peros, our cover story, is doing this month). The article confirms that the cover story for Wholenote for that month- September 1999- is Nick Peros. Along with Opus Magazine and La Scena Musicale, the Toronto based Wholenote is one of Canada’s three main classical music magazines – peer reveiewed and recognized.

Nick Peros has also had a number of feature newspaper articles written on him and his work and published in various major newspapers, including The Toronto Star, Canada’s largest newspaper by circulation – if you go to the following link:

http://pqasb.pqarchiver.com/thestar/422039631.html?did=422039631&FMT=ABS&FMTS=FT&date=Sep+7%2C+2002&author=Geoff+Chapman&pub=Toronto+Star&desc=Toronto+composer+creates+Sept.+11+work+%3B+Choral+memorial+to+debut+at+Washington%27s+National+Cathedral+at+Sept.+10+ceremony

you will find a feature Toronto Star article on Nick Peros’ composition and World Premiere concert of Prayer of Consolation, composed to commemorate the First Anniversary of September 11 and premiered in Washington National Cathedral, Washington DC.

Nick Peros has also been the subject of many shorter articles as well, but these two (Performing Arts Magazine and Wholenote Magazine) are included as examples since they were both cover stories, and the Toronto Star link is included as The Star is Canada’s highest profile newspaper.

I would like to ask if you, as a Wikipedia editor, could visit the above links to verify the notability of Nick Peros for inclusion in Wikipedia- based on the above information and links, the notability of Nick Peros for inclusion in Wikipedia is verified and affirmed as Nick Peros meets the criteria of Platinum certifictaion (which is a higher certifictaion than Gold, and Gold certification or higher is listed as a music notability guideline); he has been the subject of a number of feature articles (magazines and newspapers) by different authors in peer reveiwed publications (also listed as a music notability guideline); the critical review notes listed in the Nick Peros Wikipedia article are accurate and verifiable, as per the Classics Today example. I would like to ask if, upon your review/verifictaion of the above information/links, you could remove the notability notice from the Nick Peros Wikipedia article and, in the history section for your edit/removal of that notice, state that you have verified the content/accuracy of the article.

I noticed that you have removed some of the internal Wikipedia links for Nick Peros to other articles, citing self-promotion as the reason. Once again, I want to affirm that promotion was not the reason for making those links, but rather because I believe that the links are relevant links to the subject of each article- for example, the Emily Bronte link was included to show that Bronte's neglected poetry is receiving growing atention, and some of Nick Peros' vocal compositions are in fact the first time that some of her poetry has ben set to music; likewise with the Housman and Motet link, to show that this poet and compositonal genre are still active and relevant, and evident in Peros' music. However, I do understand that such links could have an appearance of promotion, and so I will defer to your judgement on that. However, I would like to ask you, upon verifying the subject notability as referrenced above, to reinstate the Nick Peros info in the following articles: List of 20th Century Classical Compsoers, List of 21st Century Classical Composers; List of Composers for Classical Guitar; List of Composers for Solo Piano.

Thank you Pavel for your help and attention in this – I understand that upholding the integrity of the editorial content of Wikipedia is of prime importance and I appreciate and respect the editorial/notability process. If you could e-mail me a reply to this e-mail, I would appreciate it. Thanks again.

Sincerely,

Michele Bryan

notability question[edit]

Hi Pavel,

I had sent you a response to your concerns about the notability of the composer Nick Peros article - it was my first time using the discussion feature, and I'm not sure if I correctly indicated a "watch" on this page to bring your attention to my response, so I'm sending you this note to make sure that you are aware that I have sent you a detailed response with verification links for the content of that article. Thanks again Pavel for your help and feedback - I appreciate it.

RE:January[edit]

I've seen his name written like that before, but I do figure it is odd. Perhaps a Germanized of Polishized version?

Also, make sure that when you move any people from the Czech list, to add all red links to the discussion page, regardless if they are not Czechs or not associated with Czech lands. Oh, and I'm going to start moving some Austrians/Jews/Germans from the list who really don't apply (Gregor Mendel?). Is there really anything Czech about Mendel? Any ancestors? Antidote

Regardless, Austrians/Germans born in Czechia are no more Czech than American-born Czechs (who are not included). Some people like Kafka should obviously be included (for his contributions in Prague) but others like Mendel (and Freud for example) I am doubtful about. I'm only saying we should caution ourselves when adding people from Bohemia.

As for the name January; there exists January Suchodolski. I'm not sure why exactly Kozeluh was referenced with it. How do you speedy delete? Antidote

I generally agree, especially with the Czech American part. I am unsatisfied with the statistics on the Czech page, stating that 1.2 million Czechs live in the US, especially when a majority of those are "2 or more responses" registrations. Only, lets say, 500,000 at most are majority-blooded Czechs, and of those only 300,000 probably know anything about their Czechness or speak the language. I wish there was a way to cut it down to the 500,000 that count and aren't be repeated for other nationalities. Regardless, the 300,000 or so Czech-Americans who are aware of their Czechness should have their significants listed here if the opportunity presents itself. Anyway, as I did with my work on the Serbs articles, I need translation help. Mind translating cs:Antonín Slavíček to Antonín Slavíček? It's pretty short. Ignore grammar and images and such, I will fix that. Antidote

100,000 wouldn't surprise me in the least either. What's worse than the Czech number is the 8.9 million Poles number. Not only does the number include Polish-Ukrainians and Polish Jews (many of whom don't even identify with Poland), but almost more than half of them number is composed of 2-or-more response registrations. Anyone who happens to have a Polish grandfather is automatically added to this number. It ends up repeating tons of nationalities.

Right, so translate whenever you can. I got about 8 Serbian articles waiting to be translated too. Antidote

The specified Armenian timelines are unique contributions of the author. As they are collection of dates and events, and it is the organization of the dates makes it unique to this author. There is no page on the internet that organized these events within these categories. This set of pages are UNIQUE and not copyvios. Frankly speaking his edits are both wrong and right. He is on some editing spree arguing that every single person who had something to do with the Grand Duchy of Lithuania (for instance his/hers ancestors lived there several hundred years before) is Lithuanian. Czech [and] Slovakian NB?[edit]

Such Wikipedia noticeboard would be a good idea, don't you think so? It would allow an easy way to contact many editors familiar with those countries (now you are the only one I can recall). Well, when I started the Polish NB there were only 2 or 3 others interested users, and even now we are below 10. As long as you can name 2 other users that may be interested, the project makes sense - as user talk pages are basically 1 on 1 discussion, so for 3+ people, NB are useful.--Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus Talk 15:18, 13 May 2006 (UTC)

Deletion of Lists[edit]

The vote for deletion of Lists of farms in Oppland ended in nonconcensus. As a result, I propose moving forward after considering the varous comments in the discussion. As you were one who voted for deletion, I'd be interested in understanding what you think appropriate criteria to merit inclusion of a list on Wikipedia might be. Expulsion of Germans after World War II[edit]

I had given up editing the page long time ago (and occasinal comparison with some versions more than a year old was a constant source of pesimism - despite hundreds edits the page moved virtually nowhere). However, I've noticed Richard's recent efforts, and the page actually improving. He seems to be patient and bold enough in dealing with trolls and genuinely trying to create good NPOV article, so I felt moral obligation to help a bit. One sentence pointers to reference aren't that tiresome (and I'm not going to engage in disscussion again... I've learned like the page staying in the same state for years, also the attitude of most avid editors didn't changes [17] )--Wikimol 09:49, 26 May 2006 (UTC)

Czech locations[edit]

Wouldn't it be better to use modified versions of this image for locations? It doesn't suffer from the problem of being anti-aliased. +Hexagon1 (t) 03:09, 27 May 2006 (UTC)

Well, due to it not-being anti-aliased it can be recoloured easily, hold on, I'll upload a less colourful version. +Hexagon1 (t) 03:16, 27 May 2006 (UTC)
How about this then? +Hexagon1 (t) 03:21, 27 May 2006 (UTC)
Well I can't be bothered to work on this much either, so we'll just wait hoping for someone to code a bot or something, it seems. This will have to be a one-helluva advanced bot, with optical recognition and such, so we shouldn't expect it any-time soon. +Hexagon1 (t) 03:37, 27 May 2006 (UTC)
I'll see, my visits to the Czech Wiki are not frequent, and so far I've concerned myself with translations in the other direction (eg. .au to cs:.au). Oh well, I'll give it a shot. +Hexagon1 (t) 03:56, 27 May 2006 (UTC)
Yeah, I'm aware of that discussion, I kind of started it when I noticed the article claims Nitra to be the capital. By the way, I've finished the translation, it seems horrible to me, but the facts are there. If someone doesn't like the way I phrased it, they can fix it themselves. God bless the wiki-system! :) +Hexagon1 (t) 04:16, 27 May 2006 (UTC)

The Excursions of Mr. Broucek on the Moon and in the 15th Century[edit]

Would you mind if I re-amend the sentence about Svatopluk Čech, which I wrote originally. In English, we wouldn't say "from Svatopluk Čech" (even if the Germans use "von" here), but "by SC", or "of SC". Also, the clause "the author himself makes an appearance in a vision near the start of Act 3" shouldn't be joined to the previous sentence by a comma. It should be linked by "and" or it should be a separate sentence. It seemed polite to mention this to you rather than just re-editing, especially as your English is much better than my Czech (which consists almost entirely of words from Janáček's operas and The Bartered Bride - things like "pivo" and "S podmínkou"!). -GuillaumeTell 18:05, 27 May 2006 (UTC)

City/town templates[edit]

Hi, Pavel! To answer your question: categories only contain existing articles, a template (or a list for that matter) also includes those that do not yet exist but should definitely be created. It is easier to navigate through a template than it is via a category. And, of course, templates are pretty :) For additional points in favor of "colored boxes", see Wikipedia:Navigational templates. Hope this answers your questions. Best, —Ëzhiki (ërinacëus amurënsis) • (yo?); 23:28, 27 May 2006 (UTC)

Medium (spirituality)[edit]

I'm trying to figure out if those entries actually belong in the article, especially the way they're written. I was thinking of at least adding a request for citation, but I'm doing a little more research on the subject of Mediumship which redirects to Spiritualism. Right now, it doesn't appear that the new definitions belong under Medium (spirituality). What are your thoughts? - Dreadlocke 01:41, 28 May 2006 (UTC)

Agreed. Definite odor about it. I'm researching to see if any of it should remain. - Dreadlocke 01:56, 28 May 2006 (UTC)
I noticed there was a Mediumship article with only a redirect as content, so I put the information there for the time being, and removed what looked like advertising. I'm going to research Mediumship to see if it's legitimate enough for an article. I see that someone already tagged it for "speedy deletion" as "nonsense", which is probably true.. -Dreadlocke 02:43, 28 May 2006 (UTC)

Re: wikilinks on disambig page per Manual of Style ????[edit]

Why do you remove the links? At least in this case [18] it made the info much less useful (too complicated to explain). The reason of Wikipedia is to provide as much useful and exact information as possible, not to dance by the song of the day. Thanks for understanding. Pavel Vozenilek 18:06, 27 May 2006 (UTC)

Since we just had a similar discussion just above, I thought I'd pipe in: I think the changes made the page more useful as a disambiguation page, while it might have reduced the amount of information. Disambiguation pages are intended to get you to the page you want quickly. As such it provides what information it is necessary to know which link to click and not more. WP:MOSDAB explains things pretty well, I think. John (Jwy) 19:52, 27 May 2006 (UTC)copied the following from my talk page Colonel Tom
Thanks for responding, John; the above covers my thinking pretty well. In the example you gave, Pavel, the relevant bluelinks are covered in the relevant dab page, ie "mountain" is bluelinked in page Radhošť, so a bluelink to mountain is superfluous on the disambiguation page. You've come to Radhošť (disambiguation) to find out about the village/mountain by that name, after all, not because you want to read about generic mountain information; if you wanted that, you'd have searched on mountain. My edits have improved the encyclopedia, in my opinion, and that of the Disambiguation manual of style. Cheers, Colonel Tom 05:13, 28 May 2006 (UTC)

Chanov[edit]

To be honest, I don't know anything about Chanov/Rudolice nad Bílinou, so I can't offer an opinion. It's always a tough call when the commonly used name and the official name don't match. I've been having a similar discussion on about Khrushchev's Secret Speech which is currently at its official, but essentially unheard of name. On the other hand, with the redirect, it doesn't really matter either way. -- TheMightyQuill 09:55, 28 May 2006 (UTC)

AfD, CfD, and TfD[edit]

You are correct that I have virtually no activity at WP:AfD, WP:TfD, and WP:CfD. After all, someone has to take care of everything else. ;) Regardless, thanks for adding your comments to my RfA, they are appreciated. -- Natalya 21:08, 28 May 2006 (UTC)

WP:NPA[edit]

Might want to read this before you start attacking users in the future. JohnnyBGood Flag of Mexico.svg t c 16:36, 30 May 2006 (UTC)

Indeed there isn't. However making blind statements based on quick glance at the past is just ignorant and violates WP:NPA. Only once have I been accused of being "disruptive" and even that was only a partially accurate interpretation of that event. I have every right to voice my opinion on that particular vote you attacked me on even if I've had a few controversial edits in the past. JohnnyBGood Flag of Mexico.svg t c 21:19, 30 May 2006 (UTC)
One problem however you fail to address when you say it should "consider the weight of the argument" is that is a totally subjective measure and not useful when determining the will of the community. Just because you may think your argument has weight doesn't mean users B, C and D agree. They may consider another argument to have greater weight. If we were to go to a weighted argument system admins would end up taking ulimate control of the project based on their subjective interpretation of the weight of arguments. That would be truly unacceptable. Also you are correct that the "stigma" of having caused a disruption can stick with someone (however I don't believe there has been an instance I've disrupted wikipedia enough to have such a stigma). However that is also no reason to violate WP:NPA and belittle someone's opinion just because you don't share it. You're supposed to follow WP:FAITH. i do not understand how a stated source can be trumped by what exists presently. i have not altered previous material; i have added to it.

i do not negate your possible presence during and/or after the revolution in and/or czechoslovakia and/or the czech republic. please quote your source for your 'first hand account'. secondly: what you term as 'gossip' is debatable.

again, sir, please quote your sources. in the event of non-availability of a source, your additions add up to noise. your personal convictions and experiences during and/or after the revolution are non-NPOV. restating the above: i have sources; vaclav havel and salman rushdie. these are statement of facts. yours is experience. the case being made for 'gossip' and 'urban legend' is weak. hence, i shall revert back to the changes made earlier.

Planá[edit]

Thanks for your help with editing the page. The town I was referring to is not ficticious, it's a town called Planá in the west of the Czech Republic. Saying it was near Karlovy Vary was probably a mistake and misleading on my part. It is in fact closer to Plzen. You can find a link to the town I was referring to on this page [19] I think it's different to the village that was already on the page. I will leave it up to you if you wish to re-edit the page. I was poking through the history of lyrics and you referred to LyricWiki.org as an "almost empty wiki". Just confused by what you mean. Hello Pavel! You might want to take a look at List of rulers of Bohemia, where User:Srnec has "Anglicized/Latinized" many of the names. Upon further reference, I see what you mean in terms of the RC classification. No mate I think you understood me . I mean set up regional categories then set up the district categories within them. Then villages will be listed by district in the regional categories. Then there shouldn't be any villages in the regional page because they are all sub headed. I did make the mistake of listing them in both in the Banska Bystrica Region and the regiuonal count was way too overcrowded this will be corrected in due course. Hi I propose that you alter the categories for villages in the Czech republic in the way I have done for Category:Villages in Slovakia. Otherwise the category villages in Czech will be grossly over full!! I see you have done district but try it as Villages in .... district. In Slovakia the category is too large even by region so i have sub-categorized into districts of a region. I reckon eastern Europe should be listed this way. Good luck though your doing good1 Ernst Stavro Blofeld 14:25, 5 September 2006 (UTC)

Yes your category for towns is absoultely correct in the Cities and towns in ... but it is villages that need re- categorization by district. Ernst Stavro Blofeld 14:31, 5 September 2006 (UTC)

Over 6200 villages!! Definately DEFINATELY needs to be localized!!!!!! There is no way you can have 6,000 plus articles in one big category.. I don't know much yet about geography of Czech but first I suggest that Villages is split into the larger regions of the country see Category:Villages in Slovakia. Then the district sub categories within them. Good luck Ernst Stavro Blofeld 14:49, 5 September 2006 (UTC)

The same goes for other countries in that regio of Europe, Croatia and Bosnia which i think have the same bad national village category!

Hi yes I agree that the category:.....district is wise but they need to be organized into strong regional categories - modernization. ..... district is useful as a category to include different features e.g lakes and rivers but there also needs to be a sub category within this category for villages to make some distinction of settlements in Czech.

I can't beleive you! After our conversation about Slovakia and about how villages in Slovakia are categorized by districts you go and put an article in Category:Villages in Slovakia!!!!! It goes in Category:Villages and municipalities in Bardejov District. Ernst Stavro Blofeld 21:43, 5 September 2006 (UTC)

The Zilina Region is the only region I think that hasn't yet had the districts created so you can just put it in Category:Villages and municipalities in the Žilina Region

Yes I figured you were doing something with Zb words. I will complete districts in Zilina tomorrow. I started one or two tonight. Ernst Stavro Blofeld 21:53, 5 September 2006 (UTC)

Hi Pavel,

This is my interpretation of Wikipedia:NPOV_tutorial#Categorisation: ...
Thanks for your pointers... Re the Baidu Baike example, perhaps articles here could be limited to (say) five to seven 'primary' categories (visibly linked at page bottoms as at present) with all other ('secondary') categories listed but {{hidden}} below... Regards, David (talk) 03:01, 14 October 2006 (UTC)
The ability to have primary and (visually distinguished) secondary categories is sorely lacking but consider how hard is to push any changes through Wikipedia (due to MediaWiki shortcomings, the process of making changes "official" and resistance by typical editors). Even the stable versions, promised for years, didn't materialize yet...
Yes; even with issues of consensus etc aside, I can see from Bugzilla that patching problems is more than enough work for the developers (or single overloaded developer Brion VIBBER...?) so there seems no chance for enhancements such as the above (or formaliz/sing the inclusion of metadata, or the current JavaScript hack that implements a degree of sorting in tables, or...). I've heard there is a "Summer of Code" that tries to address this problem – I think that's it's focus...? – but, as Wikipedia becomes ever more of a landmark on the internet, I'm wondering if paying some developers to code is needed... Yours, David (talk) 01:47, 15 October 2006 (UTC)

I know it is a while back but perhaps you could explain the edit you made to this page User talk:65.95.208.206 (the only edit)? The anon you wrote incitefully to then made these edits [21] which are nothing more than pure vandalsim. If you look at Rastafrai movement you will see Owens is well sourced there and your destructive ignorance (barely credible given an external link in the article prov3ed amply that it was not the joke you alude to) has only served to worsen the wikipedia until I remedied it tonight. Comedia[edit]

Hi, Pavel, and thanks for your message. I'm hoping to have time soon to expand the stub on the Spanish comedia in order to make better known the uniqueness of the traditional Spanish Golden Age theater and its contribution to world culture. It is not synonymous with "comedy". But I'm glad you asked the question. Cvj2000 19:36, 21 October 2006 (UTC)

Chinese diplomatic missions[edit]

Hi Pavel - I am right in the middle of finishing the Chinese diplomatic missions article. There are fifty-odd of these articles that have been compiled over the last three months. Your far off the mark AFD comments, which you ought to retract and apologize for[edit]

Gosh, thanks for all those well-thought-out, carefully checked commets at theOphelia Benson AFD. In the future, to improve the level of your contributions to Wikipedia, might I suggest you improve your practices in two areas. First, you should actually read the article you are commenting on, and take note of its contents. Second, you should consider the claims made in the article against the relevant notability criteria, even, as necessary, checking the references and external links provided for the article..
Ophelia Benson is a well-known published author, not merely a blogger (although she is probably notable as a blogger, too). Her two books are listed by title in the article, even though none of you astute readers noticed that. (Apparently the identification of Benson as an "author" and the listing of the book titles in distinctive type was insufficient to tip off careful and well-informed Wikipedia editors like yourselves; perhaps one or two of you may have suggestions on how to improve such descriptions.) Her books meet the notability criteria, having been reviewed and discussed in major media. In fact, Benson is a native of the UK, and both her books have been reviewed/discussed in the TLS, which even Wikipedia acknowledges as "one of the world's preeminent critical publications." (The second review appears in the October 20, 2006 issue, and is not yet directly cited online.)
Benson's two books may be only available through such obscure retailers as Amazon.com [22] [23] and Barnes & Noble [24] [25], and the relevant pages give samples of reviews and indicate the caliber of Benson's audience.
Now I recognize that article deletion is a holy and privileged activity, and that deletion of articles about women whose claims to notability don't involve performances emphasizing, flaunting, or exposing their mammaries is a virtual sacrament which shouldn't be disrupted or contested, however ridiculous or inaccurate the basis, unless the circumstances are really really unusual. But while one of England's "leading cultural critics" is apparently not, by Wikipedia editor consensus, as notable as a moderately obese middle-aged woman who films herself having sex with dogs, and the TLS is apparently by the same consensus not a "major" publication with the stature and reputation of Color Climax Anal Sex or Big Fuckin' Tits, or even Juggs, I think she deserves to be included in Wikipedia.
I now realize that the excessive literacy and cultural awareness I displayed in recognizing the name of a well-known figure in the British academic-literary world is inconsitent with the qualities required of a good Wikipedian, and fully justifies the assumptions of bad faith you have all made. I now know that in-depth knowledge of any subjects outside of pornography, Pokemon, and professional sports can only damage the Wikipedian enterprise, and I will do my best in the future to follow your lead and to contribute only with regard to subjects about which I know nothing, or next to nothing.

Now (dropping the ironic stance) I deserve a public apology from each of the posters whose sloth, carelessness, malice, or incompetence led them to make unfounded, uncivil, derogatory comments about me (and about the entirely blamess Ms Benson). And I deserve a display of abject, public, unqualified self-execration from the ArbCom member who charged to the head of the attack. I expect, of course, nothing but renewed incivility, personal attacks, and evasion of responsibility. VivianDarkbloom 20:34, 31 October 2006 (UTC)

Sorry to intrude, but I believe you also owe an apology for remarks such as "Never do that again." and "I trust that this vote will not hold any weight towards the final decision on this case.". While the remark wasn't entirely appropriate, you have absolutely no right to command someone to desist something, nor do you have power to strike votes from the record because of an inappropriate remark. +Hexagon1 (t) 03:34, 11 November 2006 (UTC)

An image you uploaded, Image:Coat of Arms village Chvojenec.gif, was tagged with the {{coatofarms}} copyright tag. Unspecified source for Image:Hermann Rorschach.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Hermann Rorschach.jpg. I notice the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this file yourself, then there needs to be a justification explaining why we have the right to use it on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you did not create the file yourself, then you need to specify where it was found, i.e., in most cases link to the website where it was taken from, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the file also doesn't have a copyright tag, then one should be added. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as {{Non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Nilfanion (talk) 23:29, 2 January 2007 (UTC)

Orphaned fair use image (Image:Jan Syrovy.gif)[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Jan Syrovy.gif. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable under fair use (see our fair use policy).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Popular culture articles[edit]

What you seem to be advocating is a "give up" approach, and I think this is indeed what happens in lots of cases. Hi Pavel,

I haven't noticed your message in my talk page until now, so I replied in Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Nemesis_(software). I see your points and quite agree with them; however I've seen a lot of similar articles before I decided to start one of my own and therefore I was quite surprised that it (alone) was (almost) immediately proposed for removal. Kind regards, and thank you for contacting me.

Natural Desktop[edit]

The article is currently on VfD. Since you had created most of the Stardock related texts your opinion would be useful to hear.

(IMHO all the articles (including Stardock) should be deleted as they are hard to impossible to maintain over long time, their notability is disputable and they form a precedent to include every software product here.) Pavel Vozenilek 15:13, 20 March 2007 (UTC)

Sure. I happen to believe that all software products should be included here, so I will have to disagree with you on that point. :-) Stardock itself is a leader in desktop customization, and an award-winning turn-based strategy game company, so I highly doubt that the article about it will be deleted. Plese reconsider your vote to delete Human rights in pre-Saddam Iraq[edit]

Hi Pavel,

I've just put a lot of work into improving Human rights in pre-Saddam Iraq so that the article is not now anything like what it was when you voted to delete but allow for recreation. I don't know that it meets your objections to it (which I think concerned the whole concept of such an article), but please take another look and see what you think. Essentially, the article is recreated. I'm still not satisfied with the article, but it has roughly the proper scope and many more reliable sources. I think what I've done shows that there's too much material out there to combine this article with anything else. Significant gaps remain and some subjects should have footnotes from more sources, but I think the article is several steps toward what it should be. Noroton 22:10, 21 March 2007 (UTC)

Spinning off "In popular culture" sections[edit]

I have noticed that you have spun off trivia and "in popular culture" sections of many articles into separate articles. While I understand that this is in good faith, as an attempt to leave the main articles free of trivial cruft, this is probably not the best way to deal with these problematic sections, as it only masks the real problems.

The problem is that useful trivia should be integrated, as explained at WP:AVTRIV; questionable trivia should be removed. At times, useful information can accumulate in these trivia sections, that should be integrated into the prose of the main article. However, such information can get buried in trivial cruft. Even worse, these separate articles are usually neglected and become dumping grounds for questionable unsourced info.

The best thing to do, in most situations, is to deal with trivia as it appears. Simply be bold and delete questionable "trivia" on sight. WP:IPC is a really good essay that explains more about the problems with IPC articles, and WP:AVTRIV gives some solid information on dealing with trivia. — Krimpet (talk/review) 00:40, 24 March 2007 (UTC)

I've got to wonder if you have addressed your note to the right person. I think I know what WP:POINT is, and I don't think I have ever committed it in my entire time on the wikipedia.

Nor can I imagine why a stranger's first message on my talk page would be so accusatory. Is it possible you meant to leave this message for someone else?

Cheers! -- Geo Swan 00:43, 2 April 2007 (UTC)

OK, now we have established that you really meant to leave the note for me, and that I honestly don't know whose time you think I am wasting, or when and how you think I violated WP:POINT. Please feel free to fill me in, at your convenience.

Anti-Russian sentiment[edit]

I agree that the article would benefit from not being a warzone and a lot of info is quite non-controversial and funny. IMHO the main problem with this and other anti-x and x-phobic articles is the undue weight. There are always two point of views:

  • Mainstream - Obviously through centuries many people had reasons to dislike Russia (or other X) but overall it is not a great deal;
  • Conspirology - The whole world (powerful hidden forces) hates Russia (X), they hypocritically accuse it in every sins, while constantly working to undermine and destroy it. Only by blind support of current leader and severing the ties with the rest of the world we can survive... (you know the mantra)

Usually the more details we put into an article the easier is to present all the point of views. With the anti-x articles it is the other way around. The more data are in the article the stronger it support the conspiratological POV. It is very difficult to present facts supporting that something is not a big deal.

I guess your suggestion is right if we reorganize the article historically rather than geographically we con show that some scares are not actual now. Alex Bakharev 12:30, 15 April 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading Image:Bedrich Reicin.jpg. Wikipedia gets thousands of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.

For more information on using images, see the following pages:

This is an automated notice by OrphanBot. If you need help on selecting a tag to use, or in adding the tag to the image description, feel free to post a message at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. 23:06, 30 April 2007 (UTC)

Image tagging for Image:Jan_Kavan.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Jan_Kavan.jpg. The image has been identified as not specifying the source and creator of the image, which is required by Wikipedia's policy on images. If you don't indicate the source and creator of the image on the image's description page, it may be deleted some time in the next seven days. If you have uploaded other images, please verify that you have provided source information for them as well.

Prague Spring for FA[edit]

I know what you mean--we had similar problems with Hungarian Revolution of 1956, the only difference being that there is suddenly a LOT of information on that revolution in English (last year being the anniversary and all.) I still think it's worth trying for the Prague Spring though, even though it's a total mess now. We were considering aiming for mid- to late-August for an "official" start, which should give us plenty of time to do some research beforehand. I'm still pretty busy for the next few weeks but after that I will be able to get down to some serious reading. I can't read Czech language btw, so I will only be able to look at materials in English and perhaps Russian (as if there will be any useful Russian material out there...). K. Image:Slovakia borderHungary.png - slovak-polish border changes[edit]

Referring to your posting in german wikipedia in my personal discussion, i'd like to point out that this map was only designated to show border squarrels with hungary but i extended it with the protection zone facing the german protectorate. I currently migrate the graphics from png to svg and will also take the polish border changings into account though they are quite minor ones. --murli 11:39, 2 June 2007 (UTC)

Mangagement ring[edit]

You marked this article for speedy deletion as patent nonsense. I have removed this tag, because these rings do actually exist, although I think only in the USA, and generate a respectable number (800+) of google hits.--Anthony.bradbury 22:35, 2 June 2007 (UTC)

Abraham and Onesimus of Kiev[edit]

I created this page, and many of the others I created today, out of the Holweck book referenced. That book is probably the most comprehensive listing of all saints, at least through its day. However, it is really appalling for its lack of detail, particularly for the lesser known or non-Catholic saints. Quite literally, everything that is mentioned in the book is already included in the article. I hope to expand this article, and others, from other books upon completing the entries for the current book, but think that may well be some time off, as I'm still only on page 7 of the 1050 pages of the Holweck book. Considering I have only limited access to this particular book, though, I am adding all the articles I created, including this one, to my personal list, so that I can try to focus at least some attention on them the rest of that time. Sorry if that's not the answer you were looking for, but it's the best I've got right now. John Carter 21:01, 3 June 2007 (UTC)

Re: First names[edit]

I agree with you on this, but I am going the information I have and from the sources I have seen so far, the first name is not given. Why it was done like that I don't know. I have also seen it as well on the FIBT World Championships. My guess is that was the way they kept records back then. I hope this helps. Chris 21:11, 3 June 2007 (UTC)

Categorization fix to wildcat[edit]

Your fix to wildcat is only a temporary solution to Wikipedia's problem with categorizing fauna by location. Some people still think that the "fauna by country" categories should be used for all animals. See these two edits to Zebra Waxbill, for example: [29] [30]. You will need to develop a better solution. (I was working on this, but I stopped because of personality conflicts with one other editor and the lack of support from other people.) Re: The War on Gryffindor[edit]

Hi, if you refer to the fact that I called vandalisms his edits, I already said to another user that I will not do it anymore. Recently Gryffindor made an absurd move of "Merano" to "Meran" for nationalistic reasons; his move was quickly reverted, and so I reverted all his edits in which he put the wikilink to Meran. They were a lot, and so I made them automatically. If I made a mistake, you are free to correct it, just apply the conventions (Wikipedia:Naming conventions (geographic names)) and do not put wikilinks to redirect pages. Did I answer your question?--Supparluca 06:31, 17 June 2007 (UTC)

Unspecified source for Image:Sikhs with chakrams.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Sikhs with chakrams.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, then you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, then their copyright should also be acknowledged.

As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use.

If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 14:58, 18 June 2007 (UTC). Fair use rationale for Image:Frantisek Udrzal.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Frantisek Udrzal.jpg. The image description page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use.

on tagging Application Portfolio Management for immediate deletion[edit]

I am confused and surprised at your decision to tag my article on Application Portfolio Management as advertising, considering that (a) I did not advertise any product, (b) I provided useful information from a neutral source of note with verifiable links, and (c) I moved established content from another location in Wikipedia where it had resided for over a year, and (d) the few links that I provided to companies that provide software and services in this space are very similar to links provided by other topics in Information Technology Management articles that I used as templates. Unfortunately, your choice meant that I've lost the content of the page which is information that has been painstakingly gathered from multiple sources for many months. I will need to recreate this effort. Can you explain your actions? --Nickmalik 02:11, 27 June 2007 (UTC)

Re: Digital Mars[edit]

The article is still in desperate need of sources and expansion... Right now it doesn't meet anything under WP:CORP. I'm not saying it's not notable, I'm fairly certain it is, but someone needs to take the time to write a decent article about it otherwise it really shouldn't be on here. Other corporation stubs get deleted for the same reasons I'm listing above. There deinitely needs to be a consistency here... Sasquatch t|c 19:19, 28 June 2007 (UTC)

Re: Rory Maclean[edit]

Hi Pavel,

Thank you for your note re. the Rory Maclean Wikipedia article that I have contributed. The Rory Maclean article was contributed because he is a notable contemporary author who meets Wikipedia's notability guidelines, not as a vehicle for promotion. His six books have been translated into five languages (French, Italian, Spanish, Dutch and later this year BB Art publishes Falling for Icarus in Czech). In the UK two of his books became top ten best sellers. He is listed in International Who's Who, Canadian Who's Who and is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature. I have added references to correct the tone. I hope this is acceptable to you. all the best happytrail happytrail

Polyamory Catagory Removal from article on Paxus Calta[edit]

Hi Pavel

i am curious about one of your edits to the article on me. You pulled the category "Polyamory" which someone other than me inserted recently. i think i understand why you pulled the American environmentalist, this is an area where what i have done is not especially extra-ordinary. But in poly stuff, i think i probably warrant the category listing. And it might well be that i dont understand the use of categories as well as you do.

Fair use rationale for Image:Obcanske forum.png[edit]

Nuvola apps important.svg

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:Obcanske forum.png. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use. Suggestions on how to do so can be found here.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

Disputed fair use rationale for Image:Logo ESC, a standard in Czech Republic.jpg[edit]

Thank you for uploading Image:Logo ESC, a standard in Czech Republic.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this image under "fair use" may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the image description page and add or clarify the reason why the image qualifies for fair use. Adding and completing one of the templates available from Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy. Please be aware that a fair use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for images used under the fair use policy require both a copyright tag and a fair use rationale.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it might be deleted by adminstrator within a few days in accordance with our criteria for speedy deletion. Thanks for uploading Image:Flying car, cover of Popular Mechanics, Feb 1951.jpg. In particular, for each page the image is used on, the image must have an explanation linking to that page which explains why it needs to be used on that page. Can you please check

  • That there is a non-free use rationale on the image's description page for each article the image is used in.

Speedy deletion of Legio II Gallica[edit]

C++Builder vs C++ Builder[edit]

According to the history comments for C++Builder and C++ Builder, you claim that the product name has a space. I find that this is not the case at all. I have C++Builder versions 1, 3, 4 and 5, and I have checked the Borland and CodeGear web sites. All of the product packaging, literature, help files and web pages all spell C++Builder without a space. Do you have any evidence to convince me not to rename the pages? Ancient Persian problems[edit]

You recently contributed to an AfD discussion on an article about ancient Persian history. I have been reviewing the contributions of the editors who have been involved in these and other related articles, and have found a considerable number of issues - bad writing, original research, lack of sourcing or citations, and POV problems. I have posted the results of my review at User:ChrisO/Ancient Persian problems (it's a work in progress, as I'm still going through the contributions). Please feel free to add to it as you see fit and leave any comments at User talk:ChrisO/Ancient Persian problems. I would be interested in any feedback that you might have. Thanks in advance.

Fair use rationale for File:Jan Svankmajer, Dimensions of Dialogue.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:Jan Svankmajer, Dimensions of Dialogue.jpg. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the file description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. File source problem with File:Hermann_Rorschach.jpg[edit]

File Copyright problem

Thanks for uploading File:Hermann_Rorschach.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, their copyright should also be acknowledged.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 18:28, 29 June 2009 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Garion96 (talk) 18:28, 29 June 2009 (UTC)

Articles for deletion nomination of Animal Farm in popular culture[edit]

Your opinions on the matter are welcome at that same discussion page; also, you are welcome to edit the article to address these concerns. Thank you for your time.

Runglish[edit]

Hi Pavel,

Apologies, but I'm taking out your edits. I've already said this on talk:Runglish, but I'll say as much again here. Runglish is not about the difficulties that Russian native speakers have in learning English; in reliable sources it is about hybrids of Russian and English used for genuine communication. Language learners making mistakes is not a notable phenomenon per se. (That said, I'm thinking of starting an article where people can put reliably sourced material on problems presented by English for different language learners.) Computer Science and Information Systems[edit]

Hi Pavel, I took the freedom to decline your speedy deletion request and convert it into a proposed deletion. The reason is that the criteria for speedy deletion must be applied to the letter, not to the spirit, and degree programs are not listed as CSD candidates. I agree this article should be deleted, though.

Another note: Please try to be as specific as possible when tagging CSD candidates to make work easier for the admins. Instead of {{db|A7}}, which will produce an uncategorised CSD, it is better to tag it with {{db-a7}}. Cheers, --Pgallert (talk) 10:33, 8 April 2010 (UTC)

Disputed non-free use rationale for File:Bohumir Smeral.jpg[edit]

Copyright-problem.svg

Thank you for uploading File:Bohumir Smeral.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this file on Wikipedia may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the file description page and adding or clarifying the reason why the file qualifies under this policy. Adding and completing one of the templates available from Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your file is in compliance with Wikipedia policy. Please be aware that a non-free use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for files used under the non-free content policy require both a copyright tag and a non-free use rationale.

If it is determined that the file does not qualify under the non-free content policy, it might be deleted by an administrator within a few days in accordance with our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions, please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 16:04, 19 May 2010 (UTC)

S pozdravem Jitka Z. — Preceding unsigned comment added by JoeyET (talkcontribs) 16:00, 16 November 2011 (UTC)

Hi. When you recently edited George Orwell, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Pukka (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). File permission problem with File:Petr Cibulka, Czech politician.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Petr Cibulka, Czech politician.jpg. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file agreed to license it under the given license.

If you created this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either

  • make a note permitting reuse under the CC-BY-SA or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
  • Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en@wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here. If you take this step, add {{OTRS pending}} to the file description page to prevent premature deletion.

If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the file to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the file has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en@wikimedia.org.

If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:File copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the file's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:File copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Files lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. You may wish to read the Wikipedia's image use policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. DMacks (talk) 00:14, 25 January 2012 (UTC)

Non-free rationale for File:Otto Lehmann.PNG[edit]

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:Otto Lehmann.PNG. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under non-free content criteria, but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia is acceptable. Please go to the file description page, and edit it to include a non-free rationale.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified the non-free rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Stefan2 (talk) 01:20, 14 February 2012 (UTC)

Disputed non-free use rationale for File:Olga Hepnarova.jpg[edit]

Thank you for uploading File:Olga Hepnarova.jpg.

Thank you. Stefan2 (talk) 12:57, 28 September 2012 (UTC)

Orphaned non-free media (File:Emil Kolben (18662 - 1943), Czech entepreneur.gif)[edit]

Ambox warning blue.svg Thanks for uploading File:Emil Kolben (18662 - 1943), Czech entepreneur.gif. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Hazard-Bot (talk) 04:09, 5 November 2012 (UTC)
