Welcome[edit]

Hello, Ph0kin, and welcome to Wikipedia. Thank you very much for your contributions so far. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are a few good links for newcomers:

You might also want to consider changing your username before you get too invested in your current one. Although you are allowed to use just about any name, many Wikipedians encourage others to use real names. I would suggest that you do this. I can certainly understand that you might be uncomfortable using your real name online, but, in this case, I recommend that you choose an alias that resembles a real name. For instance, my name is Nat Krause, but I could just as well have a username such as "Eli Miller" or "Abe Sokolov".

If you are choosing a pseudonym, please do not use the names of famous people or fictional characters. An obscure literary reference is probably all right. As always, please avoid anything that could be considered offensive or inappropriate.

Note that, on Wikipedia, you can use spaces and capital letters; for instance, "T. K. Truong" is possible, rather than simply "tktruong".

I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian! By the way, you can sign your name on Talk and vote pages using three tildes, like this: ~~~. Four tildes (~~~~) produces your name and the current date. If you have any questions, see the help pages, add a question to the village pump or ask me on my talk page. Again, welcome! - Nat Krause(Talk!) 22:50, 5 April 2006 (UTC)

content removal[edit]

It might not have been your intention, but your recent edit removed content from an article. Please be careful not to remove content from Wikipedia without a valid reason, which you should specify in the edit summary or on the article's talk page. Take a look at our welcome page to learn more about contributing to this encyclopedia. Thank you. --Ixfd64 06:22, 2 November 2006 (UTC)

Welcome to WP:WikiProject_Buddhism[edit]

Hi Ph0kin - I see you recently added your name to the participants on Wikipedia:WikiProject_Buddhism and I wanted to welcome you to the group.

I especially appreciate your willingness to share your knowledge of Pure Land Buddhism. If I may suggest, I think one of the difficulties of our community's developing meaningful Buddhism articles is that there are so many different schools of thoughts and teachers. Thus, the practice of a few sometimes (unintentionally) becomes the inappropriate focus of an article. Thus, if you ever see a WP Buddhism article develop in a way that you feel runs contrary to your understanding of Buddhism, please speak up. Your sharing your practice wisdom in an earnest and thoughtful manner will always be a great benefit to other sincere practitioners.

May you be well and happy! Best regards, Larry Rosenfeld (talk) 14:10, 7 January 2007 (UTC)

Daisetz Teitaro Suzuki edits[edit]

Hi Ph0kin -

Following up on your request, I reviewed your edits to the D.T. Suzuki article. You write very well and the material you introduce is interesting and significant. If I may suggest, I personally find that the best way to protect against reversions, edit wars, etc., is to provide citations (for instance, using the <ref> and </ref> tags — let me know if you'd like me to elaborate); this way you provide an externally verifiable source for your information. In addition, it could help people further discuss the material with you. (For instance, I occasionally see what appears to me to be school-specific changes to articles, but since people often don't provide citations, I have little basis for engaging them or appreciating their knowledge source.)

More generally, I'm sympathetic to the point you raise since, as I'm sure you have reflected, WP lacks a mechanism for assuring quality edits. Sometimes I fantasize that the good folks identified on Wikipedia:WikiProject Buddhism could provide such oversight of WP Buddhism articles but I'm not sure we have the group cohesion or actual expertise to implement such stabilizing guidance.

Hope this helps a wee bit. Keep up the good work! Best wishes, Larry Rosenfeld (talk) 12:59, 17 January 2007 (UTC) [late for work yet again!]

Nice Buddha edits; modified Template:Buddhism edits[edit]

Hi Ph0kin,

How are you doing?

First, I wanted to applaud your Buddha article edits. I think they were smart and well placed. Well done!

Second, I hope you don't mind, but I took out the Prajnaparamita Sutras entry in the Template:Buddhism because -- while these sutras are of course core to most Mahayana/Vajrayana sects -- they are already included in the referenced Mahayana Sutras. Given the sidebar's existing length, many of us have tried to keep down redundancy, etc. (For instance, someone had Pali Canon and Tipitaka entries in this sidebar recently (or something like that) and these entries were also removed.) I hope this makes sense. If not, feel free to revert my change, of course. Because of your invaluable efforts on WP Buddhism, I just wanted to make explicit any change I made that you might object to.

I hope you are doing GREAT! Thanks again for making Wikipedia a better, smarter place. With metta,
Larry Rosenfeld (talk) 23:20, 7 March 2007 (UTC)

Your thoughtful kindness & understanding are the beauty of Wikipedia :-) Thanks again, Larry Rosenfeld (talk) 17:58, 12 March 2007 (UTC)

Pure Land/Shingon sections greatly expanded[edit]

You're doing great work! It's a pleasure to read your writing since you write so well. And I appreciate the citations you've been adding to increase the articles' credibility. Moreover, I really enjoy seeing how you are filling in missing gaps (e.g., Shan-tao) and creating cohesive frameworks (e.g., Jodo Shinshu Patriarchs) for Jodo Shinshu newbies (such as myself) to better grasp and appreciate Jodo Shinshu. Well done! Best wishes, Larry Rosenfeld (talk) 17:13, 2 August 2007 (UTC)

Risshō Kōsei Kai[edit]

Hello, you said that you knew alot about Japanese Buddhism...have you ever heard of Rissho Kosei Kai? I am a member of this amazing buddhsit sect and am looking to talk to others who are members or who know of the faith. Thank you and may Lord Buddha bless you.--Greenwood1010 12:36, 24 October 2007 (UTC)

Nope, sorry. Never heard of it. --Ph0kin 04:51, 27 October 2007 (UTC)

Buddhist cuisine[edit]

Nuvola apps important yellow.svg

Another editor has added the {{prod}} template to the article Buddhist cuisine, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but the editor doesn't believe it satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and has explained why in the article (see also Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not and Wikipedia:Notability). Please either work to improve the article if the topic is worthy of inclusion in Wikipedia or discuss the relevant issues at its talk page. If you remove the {{prod}} template, the article will not be deleted, but note that it may still be sent to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. Vajrasattva article[edit]

I was wondering if you might be able to help out with some references for the Vajrasattva article? It gives some useful information about Vajrasattva in Shingon buddhism but unfortunately no sources are cited... so I'm hoping you might be able to add some. Dakinijones (talk) 17:37, 6 July 2008 (UTC)

Sure thing. I haven't seen that article in a long time, before I knew how to cite, so I really out to go back and fix it up a little.  :) --Ph0kin (talk) 15:59, 29 July 2008 (UTC)

Subordination[edit]

In Ryūkyū Kingdom, I thought that this edit was elegant -- see here. You changed "dominance" to "control" to "subordination" -- a bit of fine tuning that helped me figure out a better way to parse the complex relationships which evolved in this period. Sometimes the right word does make all the difference ...? --Tenmei (talk) 03:18, 15 March 2009 (UTC)

Thanks Tenmei. I still don't know if I really picked the right word, but an online thesaurus did help.  ;) --Ph0kin (talk) 16:47, 18 March 2009 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of Jitchū[edit]

Ambox warning pn.svg

A tag has been placed on Jitchū requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about about a person, organization (band, club, company, etc.) or web content, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the page does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that they userfy the page or have a copy emailed to you. Yushima Tenman-gū[edit]

Hi, this article contains a red link to Hayashi Doshun. Is this the same person as Hayashi Razan? His article states that he is also known as Hayashi Doshun and seems to fit the description. Jarkeld (talk) 14:24, 21 April 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for the catch. Article has been corrected to point to the right article.  :) --Ph0kin (talk) 14:32, 21 April 2010 (UTC)

copyright status of File:Honen.jpg[edit]

Hello PhOkin, はじめまして。I know you do really great contributions about Buddhism!

You wrote in Talk:Hōnen that the file File:Honen.jpg is "a picture kindly contributed by the Eikando Temple" (so I transferred it to Wikimedia Commons a little while ago), however another user in Japanese Wikipedia pointed out in ja:トーク:法然 that the fact of its contribution/attribution cannot be confirmed. Would you mind confirm it visibly by means such as using WP:OTRS (or by proving that the painter died more than 70 years ago and the painting is in the public domain)?

If a clear permission cannot be established, one possible solution is to use other artworks that are obviously in the public domain -- there's a famous portrait of Honen by Fujiwara Takanobu(1142 - 1205), whose reproduction should be available in the public domain since "faithful reproductions of two-dimensional public domain works of art are public domain" (commons:Commons:When to use the PD-Art tag). The file is: File:Takanobu-no-miei.jpg. Thank you! --Igitur (talk) 15:18, 23 May 2010 (UTC)

Hi Igitur, the image was something I requested for use by Eikando in private email conversation, which I've now sadly lost. It's probably best to remove the image from Wikipedia, since you've pointed out a good alternative. The painting is indeed old, but I have no clear written permission to use it anymore on a site other than the Eikando webpage, so better safe than sorry. I'll update the Honen page accordingly, thanks! --Ph0kin (talk) 21:40, 26 May 2010 (UTC)

File source problem with File:Kinkakuji closeup.jpg[edit]

Thank you for uploading File:Kinkakuji closeup.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, please add a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a brief restatement of that website's terms of use of its content. However, if the copyright holder is a party unaffiliated from the website's publisher, that copyright should also be acknowledged.

If you have uploaded other files, consider verifying that you have specified sources for those files as well. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged per Wikipedia's criteria for speedy deletion, F4. If the image is copyrighted and non-free, the image will be deleted 48 hours after 00:20, 26 January 2011 (UTC) per speedy deletion criterion F7. If you have any questions or are in need of assistance please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Logan Talk Contributions 00:20, 26 January 2011 (UTC)

Hello. Thanks for the notice about the File:Kinkakuji closeup.jpg file. Unfortunately, I received the message too late and thus the image was deleted. Can I get the photo reinstated? The photo was my own work, so I will clarify that in the page. Thanks! --Ph0kin (talk) 06:32, 24 February 2011 (UTC)
The photo has now been restored. You may now clarify that it is your own work. Sorry about that! Logan Talk Contributions 15:44, 24 February 2011 (UTC)

Infobox Korean Film[edit]

I saw your ID on WikiProject and so I thought you might be interested in a debate at Template Talk on the topic of merging Infobox Korean Film into the generic Infobox Film category, deleting the Hangul/hanja/RR/MR information, or keeping it separate (as it currently is). I would appreciate it if you to contribute your thoughts or at least glance over it. The more people looking/thinking about it will give us better ideas as to what should be decided. Thank you. ₪RicknAsia₪ 09:50, 13 October 2012 (UTC)

Is Nichiren Shōshū "orthodox"?[edit]

Nichiren Shōshū believes that Nichiren is the only Buddha of this age, the Gohonzon is the only Dharma, the Gohonzon has magic powers to make you rich, etc. On Talk:Soka Gakkai a user is claiming that the only NPOV term for this school is "orthodox", and my academic sources which call it "militant" are all POV and must be removed. Please comment. Shii (tock) 02:24, 1 April 2013 (UTC)

ArbCom elections are now open![edit]

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page.
