Hello and the Met[edit]

Hi, it was very nice meeting you. And wanted to tell you that after looking at the Met's schedule I will come on Friday (18th) as its open till 8 and I always prefer as much time as possible, I'm of those who try to see and read everything they can manage. :)

So if you can, let me know if and where you are there or another day (but before Friday) you are there when I can also come if you are available to chat and maybe also have cool things to tell about at the museum.

Sorry if that's the general talk page and not the specific intendend for new posts, I'm just writing from cell so it's difficult to see.

Hope we manage to talk and meet there! אומנות (talk) 14:59, 16 August 2017 (UTC)

Sunday January 15: Wikipedia Day NYC Celebration and Mini-Conference[edit]

Sunday January 15: Wikipedia Day NYC 2017
W16 wordmark.svg
Ace Hotel 2016 02.jpg

You are invited to join us at Ace Hotel for Wikipedia Day NYC 2017, a Wikipedia celebration and mini-conference as part of the project's global 16th birthday festivities. In addition to the party, the event will be a participatory unconference, with plenary panels, lightning talks, and of course open space sessions.

With special guests Katherine Maher of the Wikimedia Foundation and Tim Wu of Columbia Law School speaking on our Post-truth panel!

Also featuring an International/Multilingual panel, a Documenting Activism panel, a Multimedia/Tech Panel, a Science panel, an Art panel, and more.

And there will be cake.

We also hope for the participation of our friends from the Free Culture movement and from educational and cultural institutions interested in developing free knowledge projects.

10:00am - 7:00 pm at Ace Hotel, 20 West 29th Street in Manhattan

We especially encourage folks to add your 5-minute lightning talks to our roster, and otherwise join in the "open space" experience! Newcomers are very welcome! Bring your friends and colleagues! --Pharos (talk) 14:57, 8 January 2017 (UTC)

Thanks for a great conference! (I am one of Dr. Kyra Gaunt’s students.) I just want to mention that the food at lunch was unlabeled with either names or allergen warnings; I ended up spending much of my time there recovering from throwing up and taking Benadryl as a result. Something to consider for next time, since it’s free, unbiased information to share. EnunciationOfTruth (talk) 08:45, 1 February 2017 (UTC)

ThoughtAudio Review Request[edit]

I am seeking independent and neutral viewpoints on the article ThoughtAudio, which is being considered for deletion. If you have a few minutes to review it, I would appreciate your opinion on the decision to retain and improve, or to delete it. I fear that ThoughtAudio may have been targeted by the same editor that made a failed attempt to delete the wikiquote article Michael Scott Gallegos on the grounds "Not sufficiently notable." The majority of my work has been as the wikiquote editor ELApro. I have also been a long time editor for Wikipedia, but have not created many articles here. I would much appreciate your advice and/or contributions with regard to this decision. ELApro (talk) 18:30, 6 February 2017 (UTC)

This is the third newsletter sent by mass mail to members in Wikipedia:WikiProject Genealogy, to everyone who voted a support for establishing a potential Wikimedia genealogy project on meta, and anyone who during the years showed an interest in genealogy on talk pages and likewise.

(To discontinue receiving Project Genealogy newsletters, please see below)

Request:

In order to improve communication between genealogy interested wikipedians, as well as taking new, important steps towards a creation of a new project site, we need to make communication between the users easier and more effective.

At Mail list on meta is discussed the possibility of creating a genealogy-related Wikimedia email list. In order to request the creation of such a list, we need your voice and your vote.

In order to create a new list, we need to put a request it in Phabricator, and add a link to reasoning/explanation of purpose, and link to community consensus. Therefore we need your vote for this now, so we can request the creation of the mail list.

Read more about this email list at Meta; Wikimedia genealogy project mail list where you can support the creation of the mail list with your vote, in case you haven't done so already.

Sunday March 26: Action=History Wiki-Hackathon @ Ace Hotel
NYC-2017-WIKIPEDIA DAY-90.jpg
Wikimedia New York City logo.svg

On the last Sunday of every month, the Boardroom at Ace Hotel New York hosts Action Equals History — a unique opportunity for New Yorkers to learn hands-on in a technology training/workshop session about the mechanics, practices and benefits of Wikipedia and the Wikimedia projects. This is an opportunity for all to gather, share and work collectively towards a more robust account of history.

For this month, and following on the recent Art+Feminism campaign, we'll focus on building better edit-a-thon tools for a variety of different thematic campaigns, and user-testing them with the community. Towards a goal of advancing these tools for wider use with diverse local groups.

Newcomers are very welcome! Bring your friends and colleagues! --Pharos (talk) 05:13, 21 March 2017 (UTC)

In that sense, I have submitted a proposal of a Birds of a Feather activity to Wikimania that you can check out here. I hope to count with your support in this project and would like to invite you to join us if you participate in Wikimania. In case of any doubts, please feel free to contact me, either in my talk pages or by e-mail at david.alves(at)outlook.com.

You are invited to join the Wikimedia NYC community for our monthly "WikiWednesday" evening salon (7-9pm) and knowledge-sharing workshop at Babycastles gallery by 14th Street / Union Square in Manhattan.

We will include a look at the organization and planning for our chapter, and expanding volunteer roles for both regular Wikipedia editors and new participants.

We will also follow up on plans for recent and upcoming edit-a-thons, museum and library projects, education initiatives, and other outreach activities.

We welcome the participation of our friends from the Free Culture movement and from all educational and cultural institutions interested in developing free knowledge projects.

After the main meeting, pizza/chicken/vegetables and refreshments and video games in the gallery!

7:00pm - 9:00 pm at Babycastles gallery, 137 West 14th Street

We especially encourage folks to add your 5-minute lightning talks to our roster, and otherwise join in the "open space" experience! Newcomers are very welcome! Bring your friends and colleagues! --Pharos (talk) 18:30, 15 April 2017 (UTC)

account creators[edit]

Hi Pharos, do you have a tracking table somewhere to remove all of these temporary account creators you created after their scheduled events? Some of these users have 0 demonstrated experience on wiki. — xaosflux Talk 02:16, 19 April 2017 (UTC)

Hello are you around? Baring any other comment, use of the the expiration system may be the solution here and can be added to the existing users - to allow expiration at the end of the event. — xaosflux Talk 16:50, 24 April 2017 (UTC)
@Xaosflux: Apologies for delay, the expiration system sounds quite appropriate for those who will only use annually. I'm not sure I've seen it in action, though, where is it documented?--Pharos (talk) 20:09, 27 April 2017 (UTC)
The big write up is over on mediawiki - its boring, small discussion is at WT:PERM - but for the most part, next time you go to Special:UserRights it should be pretty obvious; you get a pull down like you do for blocks. If you have any issues, let me know and I'll look in to them for you. — xaosflux Talk 21:58, 27 April 2017 (UTC)
Hi Pharos, I never really saw a response to the actual item I brought up here - how are all of these accounts you enabled be tracked and managed? When are they currently expected to have this extra flag removed? Is that listed somewhere? — xaosflux Talk 14:57, 12 May 2017 (UTC)
My apologies, I've been absorbed by the Met Museum project, but I have a list, and I'll set the month-exprirations where appropriate next week - not in all cases, though, as some will be using for other events.--Pharos (talk) 17:00, 16 May 2017 (UTC)
What is the status of this? — xaosflux Talk 01:05, 5 August 2017 (UTC)
I saw you took care of a very minor batch, but there are still a very large number left and you are not responding promptly to queries regarding your administrative action. — xaosflux Talk 01:32, 13 August 2017 (UTC)
My apologies, you're entirely right. I had wanted to get them all done at your last message, but all of my recent time has been absorbed in Wikimania (and a number of events I committed myself to in the days before and after) and I at least wanted to get my basic procedure set up by then. The rest is just mechanical, and I'll finish by at latest Wednesday.--Pharos (talk) 04:38, 13 August 2017 (UTC)
Thank you, note this situation (having completely inexperienced editors with indef accoutncreator access) is one of the factors that is likely derailing the current RfC that would have allowed for adding "confirmed" at the same time. I think that may get traction again in the future - but event management will need to be better clarified. FWIW, I'm in favor of some sort of event-kiosk type situation (what would mostly just be a web page and someone's tablet/computer) to support edit-a-thons. I think these are important events to bring in new editors. — xaosflux Talk 17:23, 13 August 2017 (UTC)
I'm sorry, working on this tonight.--Pharos (talk) 18:55, 17 August 2017 (UTC)
I ran a quick query of accountcreators with under 25 edits inactivate >100 days, here: User:Xaosflux/Sandbox34 - a random sample of 5 all are from you. Have you given up on this clean up? — xaosflux Talk 02:21, 25 August 2017 (UTC)

Article generator for MET[edit]

Hi Pharos, just checking: the article generator you plan to use / present for the MET Glam; it is only intended for drafts, project subpages, ... and not for actual enwiki articles, right? At the moment, Listeriabot maintained articles in the mainspace are not allowed. Fram (talk) 09:07, 9 May 2017 (UTC)

@Fram: Yes, the article generator only creates drafts (which can become mainspace articles with additional human content). And the Listeria table itself lives just on project pages, i.e. Wikipedia:GLAM/Metropolitan Museum of Art/Artworks.--Pharos (talk) 15:57, 9 May 2017 (UTC)
Okay, thanks. I have no problem with Listeria tables outside mainspace, they are often useful or interesting (sometimes some problems with fair use images, but that's the only problem I know of). Fram (talk) 19:29, 9 May 2017 (UTC)

Metropolitan Museum of Art entrance NYC.JPG

The Metropolitan Museum of Art Edit-a-thon: Met Open Access Initiative is the Metropolitan Museum of Art's first edit-a-thon, being hosted on Sunday May 21, 2017 in Thomas J. Watson Library at The Met Fifth Avenue in New York City.

The Met is excited to make available over 375,000 images of public domain artworks for contribution to Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons from the museum’s collection spanning 5,000 years of art. The event is an opportunity for Wikimedia communities to engage The Met's diverse collection onsite and remotely. The event is a key marker too of The Metropolitan Museum of Art's first Wikimedian-in-Residence program, with resident Richard Knipel (User:Pharos), along with Wikimedia NYC. We invite you to help enhance Wikimedia communities and platforms with open access images from The Metropolitan Museum of Art.

The event requires pre-registration. To register, 1) please sign-up with Eventbrite via The Met's website and 2) add your Wikipedia username to the #Participants on the wikimeetup page. Please check-in with museum staff when you arrive at the Thomas J. Watson Library within the museum.

We also welcome remote participation for the global Met Open Access Artworks Challenge (15 May - 30 June, 2017), you can sign up there at Met Open Access Artworks Challenge/Participants. --Pharos (talk) 16:23, 16 May 2017 (UTC)

New York City landmarks[edit]

Look it over, try it out: {{NYC LPC header}} and {{NYC LPC row}}. I noticed the "Upload image" function doesn't work, as it actually doesn't on the NRHP template either! This is because the NRHP template's button corresponds to the 2016 Wiki Loves Monuments event, which closed, and I suppose it hasn't been updated for the 2017 event yet, as it hasn't opened. Should we wait to fix this when they fix the NRHP template, or should I simply replace that nonfunctional "Upload image" url with the standard Upload Wizard url? ɱ (talk) · vbm · coi) 02:18, 30 May 2017 (UTC)

And not a big consideration, but would you want the header's colors to be different from the current (NRHP) color used, in order to distinguish that it's separate from the NRHP lists? If so, do you have a particular color in mind? Other than this, it looks like these templates are largely done, unless you have further ideas for parameters, renaming, etc. ɱ (talk) · vbm · coi) 02:24, 30 May 2017 (UTC)

Hi @: Wanted to introduce myself - I'm Kevin, one of the organizers of WLM 2017 in the United States. I'm glad you made this template, thank you! You may have seen that last year, we expanded the scope of our campaign to not only include NRHP sites, but also state-designated sites. In the future we'd have templates like these for all states, as well as the corresponding WLM database data for them.
I'm currently caught up in Wikimania but I'll take a look at your concerns, especially regarding that upload button. Cheers, ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 19:16, 12 August 2017 (UTC)

For this month, we'll focus on Wikipedia casual editing, ways to use and develop Wikidata, building better edit-a-thon tools for a variety of different thematic campaigns, and user-testing them with the community. Towards a goal of advancing these tools for wider use with diverse local groups.

Hey again, and Met[edit]

Hi, thank you very much for your mail and with that I'm so sorry, also for myself, I only saw it after coming back from my travels :( . I kept looking on the 17th if you respond on this page, also checked my primary-mail. I was also mostly outside, going from attraction to attraction in New York, so wasn't always with wifi connection and my internet package was also screwed often (which I also used a lot during my 2 prior weeks in Iceland and then Canada/Montreal). Back home I saw your message, on my "social"-mail section...

So alongside my self-disappointment from loosing this chance to meet further, I apologize I didn't notice to check there, and for my late reply. I'm just at work now, where the mail is blocked, but wanted to write you already, so doing this again here (this time at the right bottom-page placing ;)). I also wanted to tell you that on the 18th I asked a bunch of people at the Met's staff if they can locate you via office number or something, but eventually (after I managed to open the wifi to see your surname) they said you don't have an extension of your own, which I figured, and anyway I knew it was a long shot with you not permanently/only volunteering from this institute.

I will mail you later about few cool things I managed to do, also the official site's online-catalogues for the enormous collections which I managed to find while I barely managed to scrap their surface when I was physically there. And just ask you some few questions about these catalogues in hope I can find the outmost ways to browse via "Galleries + chronology" and such, and keep exploring this fantastic place, till next time I arrive there.

Thanks again for your willingness! אומנות (talk) 14:05, 27 August 2017 (UTC)

Invitation to Admin confidence survey[edit]

Hello,

Beginning in September 2017, the Wikimedia Foundation Anti-harassment tool team will be conducting a survey to gauge how well tools, training, and information exists to assist English Wikipedia administrators in recognizing and mitigating things like sockpuppetry, vandalism, and harassment.

The survey should only take 5 minutes, and your individual response will not be made public. This survey will be integral for our team to determine how to better support administrators.

To take the survey sign up here and we will send you a link to the form.

We really appreciate your input!

Please let us know if you wish to opt-out of all massmessage mailings from the Anti-harassment tools team.

For the Anti-harassment tools team, SPoore (WMF), Community Advocate, Community health initiative (talk) 20:56, 14 September 2017 (UTC)

Wrong date in the geonotice[edit]

Sep 14 → Sep 27, unless there are two annual chapter meetings. :) — Rhododendrites talk \\ 05:26, 15 September 2017 (UTC)
