Thank you for attending! Wiki World's Fair - Your complimentary shirt!
Thank you User:Pharos for attending the Wiki World's Fair at the Queens Museum in August! A round of applause to all who attended, socialized, gave lightning talks, edited, listened, and toured the Panorama of the City of New York. As previously announced, the shirts will be given, free of charge, to those that attended the conference. You are a confirmed attendee and now is your chance to claim your free shirt! If you want a shirt, we need your size!

What size are you? Please fill out this Google form or email: Wil@Wikimedianyc.org (One "L") Once we have everyone's size and we will order them and distribute them at local meet-ups or via mail. If you are out of town, please include your mailing address. The shirts will be available Feb or later.

(User:Pharos, you, are seen here wearing a size large)

Directories using Wikidata

[edit]

@Pharos: Ziski Putz suggested I ask you about asking a WALRUS (or SWAN?) meeting about how to create and maintain organizational directories based in Wikidata? I have two applications for this:

  1. PeaceWorks Kansas City has a "Community Organization Directory of Peace, justice, environment, and human rights groups in the Kansas City Metro", which has not been maintained since 2018 but is still attracting a substantial audience.
  2. People with Friends of Community Media and the Community of Reason Kansas City want to create a directory of local news outlets.

I think I could crowdsource the creation and maintenance of directories like this if I could identify (or create) the Wikidata properties needed to select Wikidata items based on the type and geographic region.

If I understood how to do this, I could create prototype entries and a SPARQL query to create prototypes of the desired directories. Then I could organize Edit-a-thons (or one-on-one sessions) to crowdsource creation and maintenance of the directories. If I can do this for these two applications, I could then post a tutorial on how to do it to Wikiversity, make a presentation on it at a future Wikimania, etc.

Suggestions? Thanks, DavidMCEddy (talk) 05:57, 26 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Confusion over the northern boundary of the Arabian Peninsula

[edit]

Hi Pharos, I'm currently in the process of adding several municipalities to Wikipedia's list of cities on the Arabian Peninsula by population, and I'm incorporating regions of southern Iraq into that definition (Jordan's southern regions don't have any cities that I'd consider large enough to add). Many years ago, you created this image, in which you gave a rough definition of the geographical northern boundary of the peninsula; your estimate is the basis of the Arabian article's current infobox image. By that definition, it's difficult to figure out exactly which cities would qualify. Although I feel confident in adding Basra, and I doubt I'd provoke much disagreement by also including Nasiriyah, I'm far less sure about Najaf, Kufa, or Karbala. Assuming you remember, I wanted to ask how you determined what you would regard as the northern terminus of Arabia, and I'd also like to know if you'd consider those three aforementioned cities to be within the peninsula. Also, do you think the Arabian Peninsula's northernmost limits are a topic worthy of revisiting in 2023? Kurtis (talk) 16:16, 16 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Pharos: Hey! I hope I don't bother you. The thing is: I don't know if you're aware of this, but the article Cooling center, which you created back in 2006, was proposed for the meta:Translation of the week project last year. If you voted for it, it would actually be next week's Translation of the week article, which means it would be translated into several languages apart from the ones it's available in as of now (English, Arabic, and Japanese). The link is this one. It would be really helpful, but feel free to decline the offer and ignore this message if you will. Thank you for all your work and keep it coming! --Brunnaiz (talk) 14:14, 29 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Username

[edit]

Saw this username. It has one edit that was reverted here.

I added it to the list here. And the bot removed it as addressed here.

I had added the userpage to my watchlist, in case there was any further notices or discussion there, and later when going through my watchlist, I noticed the log from you creating the account.

So now I'm wondering - Did something go amiss here? - jc37 18:29, 14 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

This was from an edit-a-thon with young people, and their edit was a sincere if perhaps naive one. I can't say I was ever aware of the guideline against having "unnecessarily long" usernames before, so probably that's something I should have flagged at the time. In July 2015 around 15.5% of the English Wikipedia's biographies were about women. As of July 2023, 19.61% of the English Wikipedia's biographies are about women. That's a lot of biographies created in the effort to close the gender gap. Happy 8th Anniversary! [edit]
WCNA 2023 Barncompass
Thank you for all your planning work behind the scenes, from hosting the Zoom calls, setting up Etherpads, posting geonotices, contacting culture crawl institution partners, giving advice on how event should be run to being a friendly space committee member. All of these efforts ensured that the conference went as smoothly as it could be. I am awarding this barncompass to you. (Barncompass originated in Wikivoyage as a response to Wikipedia's barnstar. Since everyone travelled long distance for the conference and would have no doubt pulled out a map app at some point, awarding a barncompass is probably as fitting as a barnstar.) ArbCom 2023 Elections voter message

[edit]

Hello! Voting in the 2023 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 11 December 2023. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2023 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:21, 28 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Notice

The article When two tigers fight has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Currently a dictionary definition without sufficient context to indicate possible future expansion.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. The largest Barnstar I have ever seen is in Mountainville, a little ways north of Woodbine Commons. If you're going north on the interstate, it will be on your left. Hi, @Pharos! I hope all is well. A couple of work colleagues and I are gearing up to do a few events for editing English Wikipedia articles related to protest and Columbia University. You are invited to the picnic anyone can edit on Governors Island, at 403 Colonels Row by the ArtCrawl Harlem house.

This is a sequel event to the 2023 Governors Island Wiknic and will feature a workshop led by AfroCrowd at the ArtCrawl Harlem house. We'll also encourage collaboration for wiki-coverage of ArtCrawl Harlem's current exhibition at Governors Island. All are welcome, new and experienced!

Bring a picnic blanket and some potluck, as well as some sunscreen! We'll also provide sandwiches for everyone, and maybe some NYC pizza too, but we encourage you to bring your own favorite dishes to share, especially for those food cultural topics you would like to improve on Wikipedia.

We'll also do a portal thing for a bit with West Coast friends at Wikipedia:Meetup/LA/Wiknic2024.
