thanks and Wikipedia:Conflict of interest[edit]

Thanks for your contributions to mutiple articles centered around the IEA. As you appear to be involved with the organization ( Dr Richard Wellings, Deputy Editorial Director from Institute of Economic Affairs ), I wanted to point out wikipedia's community guideline about conflicts of interest. As it states, ...you should avoid or exercise great caution when: editing articles related to you, your organization, or its competitors, as well as projects and products they are involved with... Your edits appear to be neutral in general, but please take a moment to read of the guideline and be extra careful about maintaining a neutral point of view in your contributions.

Please do not add inappropriate external links to Wikipedia. Wikipedia is not a mere directory of links nor should it be used for advertising or promotion. since I have once or twice disagreed with Hu12 on the significance of some similar instances, I want to mention that I completely agree with him here, that this insertion of multiple links to articles published by that Institute, in multiple WP articles indiscriminately is disruptive, and i fully support his block. 18:52, 20 March 2008 (UTC)

I'd like to see an example of where links have been added indiscriminately in a manner that is disruptive. In fact links have been added extremely carefully, only on pages where they make a valuable contribution to the resources available to the reader. Rjwellings (talk)

Your contributions to wikipedia consist entirely of adding external links to iea.org.uk and is considered WP:Spam. Looking through your contributions as a whole, the all seem to be iea.org.uk related only. It has become apparent that your account and IP's are only being used for spamming external links. Wikipedia is NOT a "repository of links" or a "vehicle for advertising" and persistent spammers will have their websites blacklisted. Not all the contributions consist of adding external links to iea.org.uk, although the great majority do (I aim to broaden the contributions in due course). In most instances this was done to correct obvious omissions in wikipedia entries - for example, in lists of works by academics frequently their IEA books would be missing. I put this down to the inevitable US focus of most contributors. Promoting the website was not the aim, since in most cases these authors are pretty obscure.

Unfortunately your removal of my edits has damaged a number of wikipedia entries. The Institute of Economic Affairs entry is now bereft, with essential information now missing. In contrast the Cato Institute (the IEA's nearest US equivalent) entry has far more content and numerous external links to the Cato website. The latter benefit the reader, who uses Wikipedia as a valuable stepping stone to more detailed knowledge. I tidied up the Libertarian Alliance entry to remove unsightly visible links but you undid this and the page now looks a mess again. I have not had time to check many more.

To reiterate, the links were added sparingly to address glaring omissions or benefit the reader when a particular valid perspective or useful source was absent. It might be worthwhile examining the edits you removed one by one to ascertain whether you feel they were appropriate and whether their removal has reduced an entry's value by removing valuable sources or important information. My fear is that some entries may now be incomplete. Rjwellings (talk)

I would very much welcome a response to my queries. In particular I would like to ask for the block to be removed. I can assure you that, under the circumstances, I will desist from adding links to iea.org.uk and will restrict my editing activity to unrelated entries (making greater use of the discussion pages).
