I recently edited the GNAA article to remove some text which stated that freenode began blocking open proxy hosts recently due to GNAA activity. My comment read:

Freenode has long blocked open proxies using BOPM. It's not a recent development and at the time it was begun there was no indication of specific involvement in clonebotting by the GNAA.

This is one of those cases where I wish I'd been a bit more careful in my phrasing. The GNAA may have been one of the groups causing this problem, but we had problems with clonebots well before they started doing so. The decision to block open proxies was based on the general incidence of proxy attacks, rather than attacks by any one individual or group. In particular, I can't confirm that the GNAA was involved because our policy is to ignore the attacker wherever possible, in favor of just clearing up the situation as quickly as we can.
