By the way, looking at the calendar - and having gone through the college application process twice in the last 5 years with my kids - I just want to wish you luck with it. My unasked-for advice is: don't worry about it - right now it seems like this choice is the most important thing you'll ever do, but it isn't. yes, I had a feeling you were waiting for an early decision (or do you mean early action...) - my son went to the Really Big Name, and it has a lot to commend it, but go with your eyes open, because some of what you find may be a little bit disappointing. (There are some surprisingly stupid students, for example, whose admission makes you scratch your head in wonder - but think "legacy" and maybe sports, connections, and you start to see the picture. No doubt like that at all the ivies.) You make it work for you -and you will find some people you can relate to - and there are certainly lots of doors open to you as a result. But truthfully there's little difference between them - there is a lot of hype. I think you'll be fine, wherever you end up. Science was a great school in my day - I'm glad it still is. (Btw, the yanadoo link for jcs isn't working - and technically you shouldn't be the one to post it because it's yours - but I will, if you fix it.) Tvoz 01:24, 4 December 2006 (UTC)

Princeton hates taking kids from New York - it is exceedingly hard to get in if you're from NYC. And they are elitest - the Dining Clubs are still strong, etc. Beautiful campus, but in the middle of nowhere. So don't despair. Just move on to the next options and if they come through, you'll have another choice. Personally I think they all should follow Harvard's lead and eliminate early decision and even early action -having choices in the Spring is really a lot better. ANyway, I mean it when I say don't worry about this. You'll get in other places, and once you're wherever you'll be, you'll see that it is a lot less important than yhou thought. Auditorium picture[edit]

Thank you firstly for your major recent contributions to the Bronx Science page. The auditorium picture seems to be a severe case of noise distortion, with the mix of colors in the green walls and the visible film/layer in front of the stage. It leads me to conclude that the picture was probably scanned, but may just need a digital touch with programs like Photoshop or Gimp. Of course, it's all the better if you have a primary digital copy out of the camera. (BTW if you are wondering about my account name, I am a Science freshman.)Bxsstudent 03:11, 5 December 2006 (UTC)

In name, I am popularly known as Sam. Fortunately, I do have a free 9th period, and will try to meet you tomorrow.

Moving on to Wikipedia issues, I should have more closely observed the scientific process and realized that reflections can come from multiple sources. However a retake will be great.

Qazws11 also pointed out some important things. The debate team definitely needs elaboration. To get an idea of the history, go to the debate team web site http://bxscience.ny.schoolwebpages.com/education/staff/staff.php?sectionid=330, and visit the history section. It is depressing that Sadikow had been neglected as you described. He was the founder of our debate team, and under his guidance it rose to become one of the most prominent in the country. He is presented in the TOC Coaches Hall of Fame, being the second person to receive the honor in 1984. After Reidy drove out the five coaches in 2002, the team to a great extent lost its former glory. A renaissance was brought about by the new coach Jon Cruz, but the team never been as successful. I am a current member of the Lincoln Douglas team; Melanie is our director.

The history, like Science’s history itself, is filled with drama. We can get more details from Cruz of Melanie, and I will like to see it as an asset of the Wikipedia page soon. That of course, explains the relevance of the Sadikow room picture. The other pictures mentioned by Qazws11 are just as important. It seems that you will be a great help in the page development. I will like to see all the pictures on the page soon, the accompanying prose, and ultimately the path toward “good article.” Bxsstudent 01:02, 7 December 2006 (UTC)

Yeah, I'd be suspicious of anyone claiming to be a socialite alum of Science - that's pretty amusing. But 2 from the class of 2006? Maybe you know them. Just another repeat vandal. By the way - I saw the stuff above about Bill Lann Lee - what kind of page had you set up that they SD'd?? He is certainly notable, just doesn't have a page yet. Red does not mean not notable - I'm having this argument on an administrative page about lists of notables, in fact, and my position is that if a person has a page or could have a page (and that's the important part), they are by wiki definition notable and can be included on these lists of notables. And there may well be exceptions either way. Too many people here whose only contribution is to delete, which is why I am a member of the "inclusionists" (See my user page and follow the link in the userbox.) Tvoz 18:44, 26 December 2006 (UTC)

I changed the incorrect BOE to Dept of Ed, but otherwise the changes looked right - don't know why those words were capitalized in the first place (no reason to) and nothing else bothered me - if you disagree, maybe I'm missing something as I'm kinda rushed, so change if yoj think needed. New sources[edit]

Hi Ryan,

First you can contact me at sam965@gmail.com. As I said the 50th Anniversary Journal is a compilation of some sources, but is far form complete. The authors skimmed though primary and secondary sources that Ms. Lampach said was impossible to fully explore. These are stored at the library, to which Lampach offered me access but seemed skeptical about my requests. I looked through a repository of news articles filled with the new principal conflict and old articles of little major importance. I briefly looked over stacks of additional materials, including a list of notable alumni according to their year of graduation and career.

The 50th Anniversary Journal also notes a Silver Anniversary Journal form 1963, at which Kennedy supposedly said the words currently in the history section. I you go to the library and ask for this "Silver Jubilee Celebration" and access to the additional sources, you will definitely add more legitimacy to the requests. After all I will first be seen as a freshman. It will make later access much easier. I will bring back the 50th Anniversary Journal tomorrow.

By the way you seemed to have gotten rather active in Wikipedia's internal affairs. I am an open source fan, and triple boot SUSE KDE, FreeBSD Genome, and Windows. Bxsstudent 02:10, 13 February 2007 (UTC)

Nice to hear from you Ryan- best of luck at GW. My daughter almost went there actually - she was accepted and we spent some time visiting and in the end she decided against it, but it did have a lot going for it. Great location, excellent internship opportunities, cool food hall.... DC is wonderful. I knew things would work out for you - told you so! I haven't been too active on the Science article lately - caught up in the political ones - but I saw that request for citations on worldwide reputation and figured it was the least I could do. Singapore and Philippines, not bad. I'm sure there are many others too. Have a good rest of summer, and good luck! Freshman year sucks, but it gets much better. Don't go crazy. Copy edits and the massive backlog[edit]

Hey there!

I'm sending you this because I noticed you were active in the former league of copy-editors. I joined the LOCE something like a few days before it became historical, and have been making a somewhat lonely effort to reduce the copy-edit backlog, so I've been curious - why did the LOCE close, are there any efforts going on out there to reduce the copy-edit backlog, and do you think there's a point in establishing (and would you join) a wikiproject purely to maintain the category of articles needing copy edits?

I've been having a hard time getting people on related projects (WP:PR, WP:GAN, etc) to help with the backlog, so I'm trying to gather suggestions or help regarding starting a project simply to maintain the category of articles needing copy edit.

WHAT Wikis Take Manhattan is a scavenger hunt and free content photography contest aimed at illustrating Wikipedia and StreetsWiki articles covering sites and street features in Manhattan and across the five boroughs of New York City. The event is based on last year's Wikipedia Takes Manhattan, and has evolved to include StreetsWiki this year as well.

LAST YEAR'S EVENT

WINNINGS? Prizes include a dinner for three with Wikipedia creator Jimmy Wales at Pure Food & Wine, gift certificates to Bicycle Habitiat and the LimeWire Store, and more!

WHEN The hunt will take place Saturday, September 27th from 1:00pm to 6:30pm, followed by prizes and celebration.

WHO All Wikipedians and non-Wikipedians are invited to participate in team of up to three (no special knowledge is required at all, just a digital camera and a love of the city). Bring a friend (or two)!

REGISTER The proper place to register your team is here. It's also perfectly possible to register on the day of when you get there, but it will be slightly easier for us if you register beforehand.

Location change (and reservations made) for DC meetup[edit]

I stopped by TGI Friday's this evening and was less than impressed. They apparently don't take reservations, except perhaps if you call 24 hours ahead of time. The staff was not so helpful, and the menu has hardly anything vegetarian which is an issue for some people.

So, I checked out the Bertucci's pizza/Italian place across the street (21st & I St NW). Their staff couldn't have been more helpful, and think it will be fairly quiet so we will be able to hear each other. WHAT Wikis Take Manhattan is a scavenger hunt and free content photography contest aimed at illustrating Wikipedia and StreetsWiki articles covering sites and street features in Manhattan and across the five boroughs of New York City.

LAST YEAR'S EVENT

WINNINGS? The first prize winning team members will get Eye-Fi Share cards, which automatically upload photos from your camera to your computer and to sites like Flickr. And there will also be cool prizes for other top scorers.

WHEN The hunt will take place Saturday, October 10th from 1:00pm to 6:30pm, followed by prizes and celebration.

Our next Wikipedia NYC Meetup is this weekend on Saturday Dec 4 at Brooklyn Museum during their awesome First Saturdays program, starting at 5 PM.

A particular highlight for the wiki crowd will be 'Seductive Subversion: Women Pop Artists, 1958–1968', and the accompanying "WikiPop" project, with specially-created Wikipedia articles on the artists displayed on iPads in the gallery.

This will be a museum touring and partying meetup, so no excuses about being a shy newbie this time. Bring a friend too!

Wikimania 2012 bid, DC chapter & next meetup![edit]

  1. At WikiXDC in January, User:Harej proposed that DC submit a bid to host Wikimania 2012. A bid and organizing committee is being formed and seeks additional volunteers to help. Please look at our bid page and sign up if you want to help out. You can also signup for the bid team's email list.
  2. To support the Wikimania bid, more events like WikiXDC, and outreach activities like collaborations with the Smithsonian (ongoing) and National Archives, there also has been discussion of forming Wikimedia DC, as an official Wikimedia chapter. You can express interest and contribute to chapter discussions on the Wikimedia DC Meta-Wiki pages.
  3. To discuss all this and meet up with special guest, Dutch Wikipedian User:Kim Bruning, there will be a meetup, Wikipedia:Meetup/DC 16 this Tuesday at 7pm, at Capitol City Brewery, Metro Center. There will be a pre-meetup Wikimania team meeting at 6pm at the same location.

National Archives ExtravaSCANza[edit]

Backstage at the Smithsonian Libraries[edit]

Backstage at the Smithsonian Libraries is part of Wikipedia Loves Libraries 2012, the second annual continent-wide campaign to bring Wikipedia and libraries together with on-site events. Running this fall through October and November, libraries (and archives) will open their doors to help build a lasting relationship with their local Wikipedian community.

Wikimedia DC Holiday Party and Wiki Loves Monuments Exhibition[edit]

Please join Wikimedia DC and four other local media nonprofits—the National Press Club's Young Members Committee, 100Reporters, IRE and the Fund for Investigative Journalism—in winding down another year with a night of well-mannered frivolity.

The festivities will take place on Friday evening from 6:30 PM to 9:00 PM in the Zenger Room on the 13th Floor of the National Press Club, located on 529 14th Street NW, near Metro Center. There will be meat and vegetarian appetizers as well as a cash bar with specially reduced drink prices all night long. An exciting month of wiki events![edit]

Hello there,

I am pleased to say that April will be a very exciting month for Wikipedia in Washington, DC. We have a lot of different events coming up, so you will have a lot to choose from.

First, a reminder that our second annual Women in the Arts Edit-a-Thon will take place on Sunday, March 30 at the National Museum of Women in the Arts.

Coming up in April, we have our first-ever Open Government WikiHack with the Sunlight Foundation on April 5–6! We are working together to use open government data to improve the Wikimedia projects, and we would love your help. All are welcome, regardless of coding or editing experience. We will also be having a happy hour the day before, with refreshments courtesy of the Sunlight Foundation.

On Friday, April 11 we are having our first edit-a-thon ever with the Library of Congress. The Africa Collection Edit-a-Thon will focus on the Library's African and Middle East Reading Room. It'll be early in the morning, but it's especially worth it if you're interested in improving Wikipedia's coverage of African topics.

The following day, we are having our second annual Wiki Loves Capitol Hill training. We will discuss policy issues relevant to Wikimedia and plan for our day of outreach to Congressional staffers that will take place during the following week.

There are other meetups in the works, so be sure to check our meetup page with the latest. I hope to see you at some of these events!

The Great American Wiknic and other events in July[edit]

I am pleased to announce our fourth annual picnic, the Great American Wiknic, will take place at Meridian Hill Park in Washington, D.C. on Sunday, July 13 from 1 to 5 PM (rain date: July 20). We will be hanging out by the statue of Dante Alighieri, a statue that was donated to the park in 1921 as a tribute to Italian Americans. Read more about the statue on Wikipedia. If you're coming by Metro, the closest station is Dupont Circle (on the Red Line). Museum hacks and museum edits[edit]

Hello there!

Upcoming events:

  • February 6–8: The third annual ArtBytes Hackathon at the Walters Art Museum! This year Wikimedia DC is partnering with the Walters for a hack-a-thon at the intersection of art and technology, and I would like to see Wikimedia well represented.
  • February 11: The monthly WikiSalon, same place as usual. RSVP on Meetup or just show up!
  • February 15: Wiki Loves Small Museums in Ocean City. Mary Mark Ockerbloom, with support from Wikimedia DC, will be leading a workshop at the Small Museum Association Conference on how they can contribute to Wikipedia. Tons of representatives from GLAM institutions will be present, and we are looking for volunteers. If you would like to help out, check out "Information for Volunteers".

I am also pleased to announce events for Wikimedia DC Black History Month with Howard University and NPR. Details on those events soon.

In addition to the party, the event will be a participatory unconference, with plenary panels, lightning talks, and of course open space sessions.

We also hope for the participation of our friends from the Free Culture movement and from educational and cultural institutions interested in developing free knowledge projects.

The Wikipedia training and editathon will take place in the Aaron Douglas Reading Room of the Jean Blackwell Hutson Research and Reference Division, with a reception following in the Langston Hughes lobby on the first floor of the building at 5:00pm.

You are invited to join us for the MoMA Art+Feminism edit-a-thon on Saturday, to support the expansion of Wikipedia's coverage of women in the arts.

We encourage both people new to Wikipedia, and people who have experience editing online, or have joined us for past edit-a-thon events.

This is by far our biggest event of the year (over 200 participants in the last edition), and every extra hand counts, so please join and volunteer to help us engage new communities!

10:00am - 5:00pm (drop-in anytime!) at The Dorothy and Lewis B. Cullman Education and Research Building at the Museum of Modern Art, 4 West 54 Street - between 5th/6th, New York, NY 10019

On Saturday April 30, 2016, in conjunction with a global campaign, the Guggenheim will host its fourth Wikipedia edit-a-thon — or, #guggathon — to enhance Wikipedia's coverage of modern and contemporary artists from the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, and to counter geocultural systemic bias on Wikipedia.

The Guggenheim aims to further the goals of the Guggenheim UBS MAP Global Art Initiative, and build on the model of campaigns like the Wikipedia Edit-a-thon at the Guggenheim: Women in Architecture, Wikipedia Asian Month, and Art+Feminism.

New and experienced editors are welcome. The event will include a training session for participants who are new to Wikipedia and Wikipedia specialists will be on hand to provide basic instruction and editing support.

Join us for a full Sunday of social Wikipedia editing at the Center for Jewish History (drop-in any time!), during which we will create, update, and improve Wikipedia articles pertaining to Women in Jewish History.

All are invited, with no specialized knowledge of the subject or Wikipedia editing experience required.

Expanding coverage of Jewish women on Wikipedia makes these women and their creations discoverable, addresses the gender bias on Wikipedia in a positive way, and works to correct imbalances archival collecting practice and institutional projects that have historically silenced women's narratives.

A training session on editing Wikipedia will be held at 12:30 pm. Experienced Wikipedians will be on-hand to assist throughout the day. Please bring your laptop and power cord; we will have library resources, WiFi, and a list of suggested topics on hand.

Light refreshments will be provided.
