I'm really sorry to begin the new year with yet another request, but would it be possible to add one more brief detail to your NSG map? I think it would help readers if we showed the area of Captain Johnson's 1821 voyage. I don't have specific coordinates, but a short faint line off the western coast of the peninsula, near the northern tip, should suffice, with the note: "Area of Capt. Johnson's 1821 voyage". If this can be done I should be most grateful. Possible FAC next week. Brianboulton (talk) 15:56, 1 January 2009 (UTC)

Thank you for putting the Johnson details on the map. I think the article is almost ready for a run at FAC but I'll leave it a day or two to see if anything else turns up. One of these days I will master the art of map-making, but at present On-line Map Creation is beyond me. I have been trying to prepare something for Mozart's Italian journeys, which I am working on; I can get an outline, but thereafter my requests for details (cities, tracks etc) are ignored, and I've no idea anyway how to transfer the map to my browser. I'm sure I'm following the instructions. There must be a secret, to which only you (and Awadewit) are privy. Brianboulton (talk) 11:08, 2 January 2009 (UTC)
Just to say I have now nominated New South Greenland at FAC and we shall see how it does. Again, thanks for your help. Brianboulton (talk) 21:38, 3 January 2009 (UTC)
On the question of mapping, I am making progress. Following the instructions you left on my talkpage I can now do the first three stages of OMC, i.e. I can produce a map which shows correctly-located cities, connected by a track line. Of course the map looks nothing like the beauty you provided for Mozart family Grand Tour, and I expect that's where your fourth and fifth stages come in. Unfortunately, I don't understand "I use print screen to capture the map and paste it into MS Paint or Paint.NET" Is this a step that anyone can do? Also, I'm rather confused as to how the map, in whatever final form it emerges, get to my browser. I am determined to master the mapping art, so any further hints would be much appreciated. Brianboulton (talk) 21:38, 3 January 2009 (UTC)
Thanks for supporting the article at FAC. I also thought I'd report my progress as a fledgling map-maker. I can do a decent sketch, with all my cities marked in their correct locations, and the route through them clearly marked. I have not been able to get beyond that point; try as I will to follow your and other instructions, things don't work out. Perhaps I'm missing some software or something. Anyhow, what I've done is print off my sketchmap and then scanned it in as a jpg file. It is visible at File:Mozartinitalymap.jpg. I imagine it is possible to use graphics software to do the finishing touches on this version - colour the sea, bold the city names, put in direction arrows, change the colour of some lines - and I hope to learn how to do that. So it's progress of a sort. I'll keep working. Brianboulton (talk) 18:55, 6 January 2009 (UTC)
PS your message on my talk page arrived while I was writing above! Brianboulton (talk) 18:57, 6 January 2009 (UTC)
I use Windows, and I would like to use Paint to bring the map up to standard. I don't mean to try your patience, but what I would like is a simple set of instructions, which even I can understand, that will enable me to get my interim sketch version up to a finished standard. Then I would never have to ask again. With all your commitments, I don't expect this to have priority. The article is developing in my sandbox, but won't be brought to mainspace before the weekend. I will be most grateful for any help you can give, however. Brianboulton (talk) 21:17, 6 January 2009 (UTC)

Happy New Year!

Dear Ruhrfisch, I hope you had a wonderful New Year's Day, and that 2009 brings further success and happiness! ~ Blnguyen (bananabucket) 05:59, 2 January 2008 (UTC)

You are invited to participate in Yip Pin Xiu's peer review

Happy New Year, Ruhrfisch! May you have a wonderful 2009! I think you deserve a barnstar for your commendable efforts to clear the PR backlog. Unfortunately, you seem to be getting burnt out. Shorter articles take less time to review. Perhaps you could thoroughly review Yip Pin Xiu, an 8kB article about a Singaporean Paralympic swimmer? Thank you for your kind attention. --J.L.W.S. Busy, busy, busy

I've been very busy lately. Sorry for the lateness in my reply. I have never heard of Newberry or Jaysburg ever being a borough. I think it got swallowed up before it had a chance to be incorporated. The resources are good and will provide good historical data for the municipality articles. Hope your New Year is going well so far. I got pics of Cowanesque River, the lake a future article and Nelson Township. Don't know if I'll get more. Dincher (talk) 14:21, 2 January 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for the congrats and the hook. Headed south in a matter of minutes. We'll be visiting on Germania St. in East End for about an hour, seeing the Amish in Snyder County and then off to NC, hopefully by 1 in the morning. Dincher (talk) 15:22, 3 January 2009 (UTC)

I need some help with Jackson Lake State Park (Ohio). What creek was impounded to make the lake? It isn't mentioned in the park's website. I can't access a map of the area from "work". Also, any hook ideas? I am thinking, ...that Jackson Lake State Park now the location of a thriving second growth forest was once home to the iron, coal and salt industries? Dincher (talk) 00:11, 7 January 2009 (UTC)

Thanks. I can't get that ACME mapper to work for me at all. The nomination is in. Thanks for that too. Have a good one.--Dincher (talk) 04:01, 7 January 2009 (UTC)

Philadelphia and Montgomery Counties PA

Thanks you for the help with county names. As you and I are the creators of the County of Montgomery, Pennsylvania & County of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania redirects, do you think it appropriate for me to make similar redirects for other counties?

Smithfield Township, Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania

Smithfield Township has been edited repeatedly lately. Someone keeps putting in a list of national businesses, providing phone numbers and logos. I am sure that this isn't cool with wiki policy. It may need an admin's attention. Hope all is well. Have a good one. Back in NC.--Dincher (talk) 01:38, 5 January 2009 (UTC)

Map-making: Progress report

Well, I successfully pasted my map into MS Paint. I then experimented with the tools, trying to see which did what. I was successful in colouring some of my track lines, but when I tried to paint the sea, problems began. The space filler left lots of spaces between the colour and the lines, including the coordinate lines, so instead of a rich, single area of sea such as you have in the New South Greenland map, I got lots of straggly bits of unconnected colour. When I tried to use the brush to fill in the spaces manually, I got into trouble with the coastlines. The paint is opaque, so the coastlines simply disappear - as do the coordinate lines. So I have some things still to learn. I suppose one partial answer is to redraw the map without coordinates, which are not really necessary here, but how do I paint up to the coastlnes? How can I embolden the town names? How can I add direction arrows? These are the things I still need to learn. Again, thanks for your patience.

Could you look at Brandywine Creek (Christina River)? I think I might go for a GA on this, since it has a lot of good pix, tables, maps in it; but it might have some bad stuff as well. Any help appreciated. Smallbones (talk) 19:43, 7 January 2009 (UTC)

Thanks. "PR"? I hope I'm not pushing it that hard. Smallbones (talk) 04:10, 8 January 2009 (UTC) OK, I got it - "peer review" not "public relations" Smallbones (talk) 04:11, 8 January 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for your very helpful comments on the Chemetco page. That's great advice and I will take up your idea and do a reciprocal review of another article on the PR backlist. Astral Highway (talk) 17:12, 8 January 2009 (UTC)

Semi-automated peer review mistake for USMA

My apologies for not following peer-review procedures in the removal of USMA's peer-review request. I'm still new at this and I posted USMA for peer-review way too soon. I've had several experienced editors help me out in learning how to navigate wikipedia and how to follow proper procedure. Thanks for the helping hand. Ahodges7 (talk) 15:28, 9 January 2009 (UTC)

When are you planning on getting it through GA or FA? It's a shame that bridge is no more. I remember it. --Dincher (talk) 01:27, 10 January 2009 (UTC)

Why does it matter, it's just a 'scratchpad', your edit summary could be more revealing, in fact you could take part in the very constructive article review there. Perhaps I am missing another important WP 'rule'. Nimbus (Cumulus nimbus floats by) 02:05, 11 January 2009 (UTC)

The curse of the Map, Chapter 64

I thought I'd better update you as to my despairing efforts to create a map. Whenever I have prepared the sketchmap at OMC, in the form want it, I am unable to progress. Whatever I do ends up with me losing the map, and having to start again.

The map won't save by the normal right-click method. I've tried pressing control/PrtSc which has no effect at all. I've tried the Download button on OCR, which produces a window asking me where I want to download to, with Mozilla Firefox as an option on the memo. So I select Mozilla Firefox, which appears to work - until I check what's been downloaded, which turns out to be a window telling me that I can't download without Winzip which I don't have. Since the Paintbox won't accept my scanned-in version, I'm out of ideas. It is very frustrating: there must be an answer - what am I doing wrong??!!?

Well, on a lighter note, New South Greenland got promoted, thanks to your map, but I'm beginning to wish I'd never heard of Mozart and his wretched Italian journeys! Got a cold, too. Brianboulton (talk) 18:25, 11 January 2009 (UTC)

Thank you for your very kind offer of rescue. I have now put the draft article Mozart in Italy into mainspace, and my latest version of the map is in it. Check it out (it's 300px at present and probably needs to be a bit smaller). I devised the map on OMC using their "colour" option (which I didn't previously know existed), cropped it as best I could, took it to the paintbox and coloured the lines. Didn't try the direction arrows (and not really sure it needs them). I personally think it will do, though if you could tidy up the right side, that would be good. If you think that FAC will require something a tad more polished, I'll maybe take up your offer to do some finishing work on my OMC creation. But no need for immediate action, I think. Brianboulton (talk) 22:57, 11 January 2009 (UTC) (a little less frustrated)
I'm glad you liked the map. The missing city is Brescia; if you can make the city names a bit more prominent, as well as cleaning up the right side, so much the better, & I'd be most grateful. Thanks for doing the date fix. As to the DYK suggestion, I thought also the fact that the 14-year-old Mozart met the Jacobite Pretender Bonnie Prince Charlie in Rome, in 1770, might be an interesting one, too. Brianboulton (talk) 01:06, 12 January 2009 (UTC)
Thin border fine. I shall be working on the article all the week, with a view to PR, perhaps, next weekend, so no rush. Brianboulton (talk) 01:17, 12 January 2009 (UTC)
Rovereto and Brescia weren't mentioned in the article. They were once, but got edited out. I've put brief mentions back in, rather than amend the map. There are several places mentioned that I've not put into the map (Lodi, Vicenze, Padova) because I don't want to crowd it. It's a map of the general route rather than a detailed itinerary, and I'm very pleased with it as it is. If someone raises a fuss at PR I'll have to think about it. Thanks for the barnstar by the way - surely undeserved, I'm sure I take more out of PR than I put in. Brianboulton (talk) 22:04, 14 January 2009 (UTC)

Columbia Slough

I nominated the slough article just now at FAC. Your suggestions were most helpful and led me to something new. I realized toward the end of the peer review that the published GNIS coordinates at both source and mouth could not be correct. I sent an e-mail Friday to the GNIS manager and got an answer Saturday saying basically, yes, you are right, and we have replaced our old coordinates with the ones you suggested. Truly, this knocked my socks off. I never dreamed I'd get such a quick response or that it would be so favorable. Finetooth (talk) 00:43, 12 January 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for reviewing Ozzie Smith

Thanks for letting me know you added comments to the 3rd peer review for Ozzie Smith. Any constructive comments about the article at any time are always welcome. Thanks again, Monowi (talk) 04:51, 12 January 2009 (UTC)

Bridge No. 3

I don't have any pics of the bridge, but you are right it didn't hurt to ask. Looking forward to seeing it at PR. I'll give it a good look then. You reasons for fair use or whatever it's called sound sound to me. Enjoying my third night in a row at home with the family. Hope all is well with yours. There is news that I need to pass along on email. I will check my watchlist and then send out an email. That's if no domestic drama arises. Dincher (talk) 22:11, 12 January 2009 (UTC)

I see you're taking a PR break. I say good for you. I am working on Teedyuscung now. I am surprised the article doesn't already exist. If you have the chance could you look at the file for Teedyuscung that I uploaded. I am pretty sure that I have it right and it's certainly a fair use image. There is an odd warning that seems to indicate that the link I provided doesn't exist, but when I click on the link it goes right to it. Best of luck with the bridge and let me know when it's up for PR. I'll be happy to look at it. Dincher (talk) 23:54, 13 January 2009 (UTC)
Dtbohrer fixed it! Dincher (talk) 00:26, 14 January 2009 (UTC)

I will review this article tomorrow night. Busy IRL today. We got hit by a hit and run driver. All of us are fine, but I am dealing with police reports, insurance, etc., etc., Happy! Happy! Joy! Joy!--Dincher (talk) 16:30, 26 January 2009 (UTC)

Well we have a rental, no update yet on any investigation into the incident. I will be able to do the PR from JCP. I won't have much else to do then. The van is now in the hands of the insurance company. Dincher (talk) 19:24, 26 January 2009 (UTC)
Tip of the day. Don't get hit in a hit and run. Off to get the rental car. Woo-hoo. Dincher (talk) 20:41, 26 January 2009 (UTC)

I did a blue pen edit. (Since everyone knows that red pens lower self-esteems) I also did a link check. The article looks really good to me and I don't see any major problems. I stole lots of the history and added it to Plunketts Creek Township which could be a future FA, I am sure. Dincher (talk) 23:57, 27 January 2009 (UTC)

The article is ready for FA, I believe. Dincher (talk) 23:40, 28 January 2009 (UTC)

Sorry, but the discussion about the image is way above my head. I would just ask myself. Do I really need this image for it to reach FA? If the answer is no, it's gone. If the answer is yes, I fight to keep it in. Other than this the FAC looks pretty good. Have a good one! Dincher (talk) 21:23, 3 February 2009 (UTC)

Glad to know it's working out. It was looking good to me when I looked. Dincher (talk) 02:42, 4 February 2009 (UTC)
I agree. A doorstop from the bridge would be pretty cool. I bet the rocks that were left behind look just like the rest of the rocks in the creek. Two hour delay today for a light dusting of snow! Dincher (talk) 13:52, 4 February 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading and adding the pic. I will look at it next. This brings me to a pic question for you. I saw that you linked Valley#hollow to the bridge article. Do you have a pic of a hollow that could be added to the valley article? I think it would be very helpful. What a hollow is, is very obvious to us, but it seems to be a very regional word. People here on the coastal plain really don't know the use of hollow as it is used in PA etc. Dincher (talk) 22:38, 5 February 2009 (UTC)

The one of the state game farm is the best. But just okay. The best PA hollows are in the ridge and valley region, in my opinion. Good night! Dincher (talk) 03:58, 6 February 2009 (UTC)

Teedyuscung

Teedyuscung has turned into a pretty big project. I won't work on it much again until Thursday when I "work" again. Any edits that you can make will be greatly appreciated. I am sure there's a hook too. His death was pretty brutal and notable. Perhaps the hook will be there. I think I'll contact Kevin Myers about it too. If I remember correctly he was pretty helpful with Fort Antes, Shikellamy and Elizabeth Catherine Montour. Dtbohrer has been helpful too. This could be a GA I think. Not sure. There is some stuff I have to sort out. It's still pretty rough. Dincher (talk) 04:13, 14 January 2009 (UTC)

My resources on Teedyuscung are limited, but there is a book that I may buy. He was pretty much stuck between a rock and a hard place his entire life. Dincher (talk) 20:49, 15 January 2009 (UTC)
I found even more on line about the Treaty of Easton and Teedyuscung. Thanks for the google books link, too. My goal for tonight is to get it ready for DYK and then maybe buy some books for a GA push. Any help is as always greatly appreciated. Dincher (talk) 23:32, 15 January 2009 (UTC)
Teedyuscung is done for now until I get or decide to get a book. Any hook ideas? perhaps...that Teedyuscung unsuccessfully tried to establish a home for the Lenape in the Wyoming Valley of Pennsylvania? Dincher (talk) 01:32, 16 January 2009 (UTC)
Thanks for the better hook. I nominated it and am going to shoot for getting the pic on the mainpage too. Hopefully it's compelling enough to warrant the lead spot. Thanks again. Dincher (talk) 02:12, 16 January 2009 (UTC)

I doubt he died. Two portraits of former Carbon County judges were created in 1996 by a Dr. Robert C. Burns from Princeton, New Jersey.[1]. The last Robert Burns to die in Mercer County, New Jersey was in 1995. --D.B.talkcontribs 23:10, 16 January 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for putting in the finishing touches and tidying the map up. I think it looks fine now. I will continue to blunder on with my efforts to produce maps unaided, it will be worth it in the end. Meanwhile I think the Mozart article is looking in reasonably good shape and I hope to bring it to PR shortly. Brianboulton (talk) 17:31, 14 January 2009 (UTC)

Just thought I'd let you know that another editor has worked on the map, changed colours, added a bit of detail. The editor is well-intentioned and I've no complaints with his revisions, but in view of your work I thought I'd draw your attention to it. Brianboulton (talk) 21:25, 17 January 2009 (UTC)

Akron editors

Hi there, I suspect there might be a bit of sockpuppetry going on and before I file a CU was wondering if you thought my reasoning was logical. The following editors all have similar styles in content and summaries, one also uploaded an image the day after it was deleted that was originally claimed to be the work of another.

Probable users:

  • Troop330 (not 100% sure, but looks to fit) edited from May 4-August 29
  • Sleepydre edited from October 10-27
  • Dreadys15 edited from November 2-30
  • Sleepyak3 editedfrom December 2-29
  • Rubohcity began editing on January 3-present

Probable IPs:

Examples: Images:

  • Sleepydre uploaded a file, it was deleted, then Sleepyak3 uploaded the exact same image a day after the original was deleted.
  • Checking there commons images and here, I noticed some users also use Source as anonymous Akronite when tagging them as copyvios. (ex. File:Ybridge.jpg)

Summaries:

  • Rubohcity and 219 use summaries with similar wording when adding previously removed content User diff IP diff

Other:

  • 219 was blocked at 18:24, January 14, 2009, Rubohcity began editing at 18:44, January 14, 2009 following the exact same edits as the IP
These are just things I've noticed as I've come across all of these editors (except Troop 300, but that account appears to be the starter). The one thing that bothers me most is Sleepydre and Sleepyak3 uploading the same image, each of them claiming it to be their own work. In your opinion is this something I should get checked, or am I being paranoid? §hepTalk 03:53, 15 January 2009 (UTC)
I'll see what all I need to do. Thanks for the advice. §hepTalk 04:04, 15 January 2009 (UTC)

This file was uploaded again (File:SummitCountyMeh.jpg) by the same user. I wasn't totally sure which avenue to take in tagging it. --JonRidinger (talk) 12:22, 15 January 2009 (UTC)

Thanks. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Purocafe (talkcontribs) 17:27, 21 January 2009 (UTC)

HELP!

Although we are not allowed to copywrite photos, so that photo is not copywritten regardless of being on a web page, I found a similar photo and uploaded it as bboze.jpg. But it isn't loading and I've tried over and over. Since you took it down, can you please, please help and put that one up in it's place. I'm 99.999% certain that it isn't used anywhere else.

Thank You

ONCE AGAIN?

Thanks for your help. I saw that the picture was up, but it disappeared as quickly as it appeared. I don't see anything in the history about it being deleted, though. Wikipedia isn't my forte and I don't know what I'm doing.

Any help is greatly appreciated and more than welcome!

Ohio state parks

It looks like I just might knock out the rest of the Ohio state parks. The latest to be up and running is Beaver Creek State Park. I am sure there is a DYK in it somewhere. The history is pretting interesting wars and canals. If you don't mind could you take a look at it. This would be about the 60th DYK hook that you've helped with. For that I thank you. Stephen Etnier

Hi, and thanks for contacting me. I'm totally new to Wikipedia content creation. As you may know, I'm working up an entry on my father, the artist Stephen Etnier. I am working meticulously to avoid conflict of interest and POV problems. Your input is very much appreciated. I'm contacting you now to ask if I am required to document changes to the page as it exists in draft on my user page. Is this necessary for a page under development on a user page??

Thanks!!! Etnier (talk) 16:01, 23 January 2009 (UTC)

Stephen Etnier again

I'm sure I'm not replying at the appropriate spot, but I'm new to this. Please feel free to email me if you'd prefer: it seems easier.

I received your message and am very grateful for your input. I take it from your silence that I don't have to annotate my edits on my user-page draft. In essence, all references can be taken to be sourced from the "Journeys Over Water" catalog, which containsamong other things a timeline for my father's career. I'm not sure how to handle that situation. The other references may well be on the page by error: from my early reading I thought it was important to 'reference' outside articles and books on the subject of interest. If the presence of these references, absent a direct connection to the article, is inappropriate, I'll delete them (with regrets LOL).

Someone else is drafting the 'career' sections and I will review/edit them before adding them. Once the page is done it was my intention to create a new page, not to "Move" it. Is this appropriate???

Many, many thanks for contacting me and for your support. Etnier (talk) 18:54, 23 January 2009 (UTC)

I have added refs per your suggestion and now find I have a stack of reiterated identical text above the 'real' reference section. My research here hasn't helped me clear this up. Any further assistance much appreciated!!! Etnier (talk) 19:03, 23 January 2009 (UTC)

Thank you for your continued support and your research! I have edited in response to your suggestions. I'm afraid I don't understand what you meant, however, when you wrote "I would also go back and add the wikilink to the bio when it is moved to mainspace (instead of the external link to his official webpage)." What does that mean, please? Etnier (talk) 19:47, 23 January 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for your gallery work!!! I considered that originally and then forgot about the option; sheesh. Your assistance has been invaluable.

Should you care to get in deeper, I just completed John Etnier and appreciate any input.

Many thanks for all you've done in recent days! Etnier (talk) 08:38, 25 January 2009 (UTC)

I want to thank you very much for your help today. I feel confident enough about the page that I have created the real version. I sorted out the York list; it appears it will take a bit to propogate back up to that category.

Many thanks! Etnier (talk) 20:53, 23 January 2009 (UTC)

If I may I would like your input/review on painting images now added to the page. Although it looks fine to me, I do notice a string of resultant "edit" tags which are not the most graceful in appearance. Plus, of course, any stylistic/formal errors I may have committed. Many thanks, again.

I notice you cleaned up the category and similar links before I could get there! Many thanks. Etnier (talk) 13:10, 24 January 2009 (UTC)

Mozart, map et al

I hope you are taking things nice and easy, though I see you are picking up the odd PR. Rest assured, PR is doing fine, the backlog is under control. I thought you'd like to know that Mozart in Italy and its infamous map has gone to FAC. It had a very thorough peer review, thanks to Jappalang (who also upgraded the map) so I am quite hopeful. Take care. Brianboulton (talk) 22:04, 23 January 2009 (UTC)

Vigo

Where is Terre Haute in relation to that township? This place, as far as I can tell is described as a "town", which could mean township. But it is also described as about 6 miles south of Terre Haute. It shows up on Google Maps as pretty much part of Terre Haute today. I am almost certain it no longer exists but haven't ever been to Terre Haute so i don't actually know that. I just don't like putting together town articles much so thought maybe someone else would notice and do it, Vigo is linked from quite a few articles. --IvoShandor (talk) 05:25, 24 January 2009 (UTC)

Columbia Slough

Thank you for all the help with this. It was a long haul, and I'm feeling pleased. I don't know if I'll find enough for Tryon Creek to eventually add it to the set, but that's the plan. Great fun, this. Finetooth (talk) 21:29, 24 January 2009 (UTC)

I've never investigated featured topics, but now that you've put me on to the idea, it seems like a good one. This is further incentive to keep going, not that my interest is flagging. You have been, by the way, an enormous amount of help. Without it, I doubt that I'd have taken anything as far as FAC. Finetooth (talk) 00:22, 25 January 2009 (UTC)

If you get the chance, please consider taking a look at Benjamin Franklin High School (New Orleans, Louisiana) which is up for peer review at Wikipedia:Peer review/Benjamin Franklin High School (New Orleans, Louisiana)/archive1. More curious

I have thought about this for awhile, since you commented about the two not being the same. My thoughts follow, rambling, and possibly incoherent at times. :-)

Bear with me. My guess is that the boundaries have changed, significantly, since the Vigo Ordnance Plant was constructed (during World War II). Whole townships may have been created since then. Often rural villages (both unincorporated and incorporated) often have vague and sprawling boundaries, take a village like Esmond, Illinois, the village has a total of about 300 people but covers 22 square miles of land. Google Maps takes a Vigo query closer to Terre Haute which is not surprising, considering the lack of what is generally widely available statistical data about Vigo. And though Terre Haute had a larger population in 1940 than it does now I would venture to guess that the area covered by the city has grown (the rise of modern subdivisions and suburbs being a post-WWII phenomenon) since the Vigo Plant existed. If you search "Pfizer Terre haute" on Google Maps it takes you to a large production facility which may well be the old Ordnance Plant (it almost has to be - as they are one and the same with the Pfizer facility recently closed and the only facility of its kind in TH that I am aware of). This, of course, is original research coupled with a healthy dose of speculation, I would imagine the people at Pfizer or the Vigo County Courthouse might have a better idea, I'll save that one for the book though I guess. --IvoShandor (talk) 08:18, 28 January 2009 (UTC)

PR backlog maintenance

I'll keep doing it for a while, it's no great bother. It's interesting to see the range of articles in preparation. I'll let you know when I'm ready for a rest. I'll try and keep going eith the reviews, too. Brianboulton (talk) 17:24, 28 January 2009 (UTC)

Kinzua Bridge PR

Sorry if this is a bad time, as you also have a bridge at PR, but could you possibly add some comments to the peer review for the Kinzua Bridge. I asked Dincher as well. I was also going to ask IvoShandor as he provided a lot of the bridge photos, but he appears to be on a wikibreak (maybe once he's back?). It's been over two years since the article was created, over 6 months since it made GA, and have not a clue to how many articles you've sent through PR and made FA in that time. I swear my method of improving articles is the same as the one for wine and cheese ;-) Good luck in the impending FAC, though. --D.B.talkcontribs 21:54, 29 January 2009 (UTC)

Cherry Springs State Park

To ease my pre-Super Bowl tension, I went ahead and used the NY Times resource to expand the Astronomy section. I like the way it looks so far, but am not sure where to place it. Another user suggests putting it in the recreation area. Upon reflection this seems like the best bet. It seems to be purely recreational astronomy going on there awyway. Thoughts? I gotta work today, but will get Super Bowlitis at 5:30 or so. Have a good day! Dincher (talk) 19:15, 1 February 2009 (UTC)

Oh I won't be at work. I am scooting out of here at 5:30. I will move the Astronomy section now. Thanks. Dincher (talk) 20:23, 1 February 2009 (UTC)
Maybe. We're a long way from needing to make that decision. Dincher (talk) 21:46, 1 February 2009 (UTC)

Created Buck Creek State Park tonight. Calling Dr. Hook. I looked at Cherry Springs State Park today on Google Earth. An airfield there is obvious and it must have been built by the CCC. I am going to seek more info on this. And the history of the airfield too. It doesn't look to be active any longer, but I'd bet you could land there if you had too. The FAC still looks pretty good. Dincher (talk) 02:09, 5 February 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for the hook. The nomination is in. I didn't think the pic was all that interesting or illustrative. It's just a sunset on any lake any where. Unless I am missing something. Don't lose your rock! Have a good night and rest well. Dincher (talk) 03:58, 5 February 2009 (UTC)

New Purchase

With regard to Plunketts Creek Bridge No. 3, I think I was in a hurry and misread the information when I removed reference to the title New Purchase. There should be an explanation of what New Purchase refers to though, as there is neither a page about the subject nor mention of the name in the article Treaty of Fort Stanwix. --Natural Cut (talk) 04:11, 3 February 2009 (UTC)

Ahh, that's much better. I made New Purchase redirect to the treaty page for future reference purposes. The bridge article is well done other than the confusion I had there. I'm new to Wikipedia, so it's encouraging to see my comparatively small contributions are appreciated. :-) --Natural Cut (talk) 04:45, 3 February 2009 (UTC)

PD

You are most welcome. I sent a second e-mail just now to Ms. Russell, and I'm hoping that she soon e-mails the photo to photosubmissions@wikimedia.org with statements about ownership and licensing. (Knock on wood.) She was certainly helpful and quick with her first reply. Finetooth (talk) 23:29, 3 February 2009 (UTC)

I plunged ahead today as I sometimes do. On reflection, it would have been better to suggest at FAC that a note to Ms. Russell might solve the problem. I'd be happy and a bit relieved to step out of the middle if you'd like to talk to her directly. She is Kara Russell, Architectural Historian, PennDot Bureau of Environmental Quality. The OTRS is not a process I've looked into at all before today. I didn't think much about what would happen if Ms. Russell said "yes, public domain". After she did, I felt great elation but then began to wonder, now what? It's possible that I've produced a new tangle rather than a neat solution. I hope not. Finetooth (talk) 05:06, 4 February 2009 (UTC)
I'm glad you saw my good news message on my own talk page. I meant to post it here but got distracted by a real-life problem. All is well. Finetooth (talk) 00:43, 5 February 2009 (UTC)

Ruhr, I think this image has all sorts of problems (BLP among them), it can probably be fair use, but there are some grand implications made on the page and in the file name. --IvoShandor (talk) 14:19, 4 February 2009 (UTC)

Rock, paper, hollow, shoot!

Sorry to hear you lost your rock. I hope I didn't jinx you. I am pretty sure I did. I've been thinking about hollows and how are they would be to photograph. My definition of a hollow is a small valley that is just barely wide enough to run a road through or smaller. Is the bird farm in the hollow or is the hollow in the background. A good example of a hollow would be Jack's Hollow. I am not sure how you could position to get a good picture of it, unless you want to climb to the top of the Arch Street Bridge, which I hear is slated to be replaced. Dincher (talk) 23:03, 6 February 2009 (UTC)

The rock was removed from a beautiful setting. Very nice pic. As for the hollow pic, I say go for it! Will be busy IRL this weekend. Dincher (talk) 04:17, 7 February 2009 (UTC)

Would it be possible for you to spare a minute to look at my review of this article, and perhaps add a few comments if you think necessary? I just think the nominator will be happier to hear something from someone more familiar with American football. If you think any of my comments are unhelpful, feel free to say so! Brianboulton (talk) 21:44, 7 February 2009 (UTC)

1970s LGBT shows

Thanks for reviewing the list. Sorry that you wasted your time on it, since it's blindingly obvious from other peer reviews and FL nominations that there is no way the image fascists are going to let the articles through the FL process if they contain any images. If you should ever see my sig on a peer review request again following a notation like "I want to try to get this to FA" then please have me hunted down and killed because clearly it will mean that I've gone mad. Otto4711 (talk) 17:33, 8 February 2009 (UTC)

  • Would a single lead FU image work? I have no idea, nor do I care to try to find out. I admit that my interpretation of what constitutes "significant understanding" and "detrimental" may be somewhat more liberal than others', but it's simply not worth the time and emotional expense for me to subject myself to the arrogance of these self-styled "experts". I know I do good work. If I have to forgo a little banner on my user page to announce to the world that I do good work if the cost is spending my limited time away from that good work, then so be it. When Bride is done with FA, so am I. Thank you again for the time and thought that you put into your reviews. I specifically and unequivocally exclude you from the "arrogant experts" clique. If there was a "thanks for not being a jerk" barnstar I'd give you one. Otto4711 (talk) 05:14, 12 February 2009 (UTC)

I am reviewing this, but I can't find a PR template on the article's talkpage. It doesn't seem as though one was ever there, so I don't quite know how the article got into the PR system. Can you fix it, otherwise my review won't have a home to go to! Brianboulton (talk) 21:29, 9 February 2009 (UTC)

OTRS pic

Re: Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Plunketts Creek Bridge No. 3 - after half an hour of searching in OTRS, I cannot find the picture you referred to. I'm going to be going away for the next week, but I suggest you find another OTRSer and give him or her the necessary information (the email address of the sender) to find it and tag the picture appropriately. Raul654 (talk) 18:40, 10 February 2009 (UTC)

Ruhr, do you have the e-mail address? It's published on-line, and I can post an embedded link here if you like or send the e-mail address to you via e-mail. Finetooth (talk) 20:51, 10 February 2009 (UTC)
OK. I see what happened. She sent the e-mail to photosubmission@wikimedia.org* instead of photosubmission@wikimedia.org. This happened because my original note to her included the typo with the odd asterisk. I noticed my mistake after I had sent it to her, and I sent a follow-up note to her explaining the typo. Alas, I did not notice that the typo had survived in the final message she sent to photo submission. I would be willing to write to her again explaining this, but it might reduce the confusion if you wrote to her. She seems very nice and eager to help. Finetooth (talk) 21:32, 10 February 2009 (UTC)
Thanks for updating me. She responded within hours on the occasions I wrote to her. Her final message to me indicated an eagerness to read the article, and I wrote back with a link to it and to the covered bridge articles, which I thought she would also find interesting. Finetooth (talk) 17:35, 11 February 2009 (UTC)
Any response from Ms. Russell? Finetooth (talk) 05:02, 14 February 2009 (UTC)
In my correspondence with her, I used my real name. If you need this, I don't mind sending it to you by e-mail. Just let me know if that would be helpful. She will not know me by Finetooth. I am traveling, by the way, and my Internet connections for a little while will vary from day to day. This one is good for tonight, but I don't know what tomorrow may bring. Finetooth (talk) 05:15, 14 February 2009 (UTC)
I sent the e-mail just now. The phone call is a good idea, especially considering how impressed she'll be when she learns your real name. Although, depending on her world view, it might not impress. I trust your judgment in such matters as in all others. Finetooth (talk) 05:50, 14 February 2009 (UTC)

Carsten Borchgrevink – new fast-tracking policy?

I was astonished that Borchgrevink got promoted so soon. I only put it up on 5 February, so that's 5 days! Mind you, I'm not complaining, but as I have said before, strange are the ways of FAC. I've just congratulated User:DavidCane on the promotion of Edgar Speyer, after 34 days. I'm sure your latest bridge offering will come through soon—there seems to be a minor image tag issue, but nothing else. Thank you for your good wishes and valued support for these polar-related articles.

Map Thanks

I look forward to seeing the linking that you talked about. Let me know how that comes along. Also, I would suggest a 90 degree rotation so that north is at the top. This will also allow for the map to be larger at 400px or whatever size we use. My only suggestion is to consider including Nichols Bridgeway in the map.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTM) 05:50, 13 February 2009 (UTC)

As a template, could it be used in the Millennium Park infobox?--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTM) 16:54, 13 February 2009 (UTC)
It is looking great.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTM) 17:38, 13 February 2009 (UTC)
I have added the unformatted map at Template:Millennium Park. I like the way the linked map is looking. I think some of the text is going to look better in the horizontal version. I kind of would like to see the vertical version, but I think it will be too much additional trouble. On the main article page, it might look better vertical with the current map adjacent to it.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTM) 21:07, 13 February 2009 (UTC)
The streets would be a good addition. The three that have articles are more important than the fourth.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTM) 21:36, 13 February 2009 (UTC)
Uh Oh. First problem at Millennium Park. In Internet explorer, when I hit the middle button on the upper right to maximize and shrink the page, the map disappears.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTM) 03:20, 14 February 2009 (UTC)
I'd start at the help desk.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTM) 03:41, 14 February 2009 (UTC)
I am getting use to the horizontal. You don't need to spend your time with the vertical map. We are pretty much set. It looks extremely good.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTM) 00:42, 15 February 2009 (UTC)
I added the map to all the individual articles. It is hard to arrange things so they look good both at high resolution viewing (say 1680 wide) and low resolution viewing (say 1050 wide). Any suggestions.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTM) 04:31, 16 February 2009 (UTC)

Glad to be third in line.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTM) 03:42, 14 February 2009 (UTC)

Taking you up on your offer

I'm going to take you up on your offer of assistance, because I'm a little shocked at the response I got to my comments on Wikipedia:Peer review/Reptile (Mortal Kombat)/archive1. A lighthearted comment about how I would rather see Napoleon featured than Reptile (I'm glad I didn't use your bridge, that would have been even worse) turned into an accusation of fancruft. Would you mind giving your input on things like the section changes I suggested and YouTube references? Thanks. Natural Cut (talk) 16:56, 14 February 2009 (UTC)

DYK update

Hello. The DYKAdminBot doesn't seem to be updating again; it's late and an update needs to be pushed. Could you manually do the update if you're here? It should be from queue 5. Thank you! Shubinator (talk) 17:26, 14 February 2009 (UTC)

Fixed by Rootology. Shubinator (talk) 19:20, 14 February 2009 (UTC)

Update needed again. Other admins don't want to touch it in fear of messing up the main page. Can you do it? Should be updated from queue 1. Shubinator (talk) 01:58, 15 February 2009 (UTC)

Heh, we crossed pigeons. I can do the credits. I can't reset the timer, change the bot's next queue number, clear the queue, or delete the previous pic. Thanks! Shubinator (talk) 02:03, 15 February 2009 (UTC)
Ok, that works. No worries. Shubinator (talk) 02:16, 15 February 2009 (UTC)
I've finished credits. Thanks! Shubinator (talk) 02:20, 15 February 2009 (UTC)
I've cleared Next update. It's editable by normal users. Thank you for doing the update! It looks like we'll get some peace for 6 hours. Shubinator (talk) 02:25, 15 February 2009 (UTC)

Re: Followup

Thanks for the reminder, I will do that PR today. --Der Wohltemperierte Fuchs (talk) 20:03, 16 February 2009 (UTC)

I finished mine just now (good timing). Thanks for all you do over at PR. --Laser brain (talk) 04:13, 17 February 2009 (UTC)

Bates method peer review

Thanks for the peer review. I have responded to your points and made a couple of changes to the article based on your suggestions, but there are a few points I am not clear on. PSWG1920 (talk) 20:24, 17 February 2009 (UTC)

I added a photo of Bates and his assistant to the infobox, and responded to your replies on the peer review page. In particular, I'm wondering if you think the lead section now meets WP:LEAD? PSWG1920 (talk) 22:57, 18 February 2009 (UTC)

Thank you very much. As far as the Huxley photo, I'm not sure what the standard practice is in regards to duplicating images in different articles; see my comments at the peer review page. It would be helpful if you could keep Bates method on your watchlist, as there still exists the potential for the article to be ruined, by some well-meaning (I assume) but in my view misguided editors. PSWG1920 (talk) 07:08, 19 February 2009 (UTC)

OTRS

Great news about the formerly lost but recently re-sent e-mail. If this were only about the one photo, the fair-use route might have been better. It appears, though, that the side effect of having a batch of free-use images available makes the extra effort worthwhile. I'm glad you got it sorted out. Finetooth (talk) 22:31, 17 February 2009 (UTC)

Vandalized pages on my watchlist

Kennett Square gets a good bit of vandalism. I have to revert a couple times a month. With my work on the wiki falling off, I would like you to add it to your watchlist. I will add more here as I remember them or have to revert them. Dincher (talk) 22:35, 17 February 2009 (UTC)

You already have Plum, right? Dincher (talk) 22:35, 18 February 2009 (UTC)

DYK update

Can you do another update? Should be from Queue 3. Shubinator (talk) 00:52, 19 February 2009 (UTC)

Sure. Shubinator (talk) 01:00, 19 February 2009 (UTC)
Whoops, I've done credits. Shubinator (talk) 01:38, 19 February 2009 (UTC)
Sorry, I should've told you earlier. All that's left is bumping up the queue number and resetting the queue. Shubinator (talk) 01:40, 19 February 2009 (UTC)
Excellent, thank you! Shubinator (talk) 01:45, 19 February 2009 (UTC)

Another update needed, from Queue 4. Shubinator (talk) 17:13, 21 February 2009 (UTC)

I can do credits. You can clear the queue when you're done; I can do credits from the history. Thank you! Shubinator (talk) 17:20, 21 February 2009 (UTC)
Haha, I'm sure there'll be a next time :). Shubinator (talk) 17:22, 21 February 2009 (UTC)

Plunketts Creek promotion

I've just seen the article's overdue promotion. Congratulations, and keep the bridges coming! Brianboulton (talk) 09:12, 19 February 2009 (UTC)

It's listed as a featured article under Geography and Places. I reckon the bot is sleeping again. Brianboulton (talk) 14:39, 19 February 2009 (UTC)
A star has appeared over Plunketts Creek Bridge No. 3. Congratulations, cheers, and waving of hats all around. Finetooth (talk) 02:47, 20 February 2009 (UTC)
Congratulations. I'd better start picking up the pace, else you might pass me on WP:WBFAN. ;) –Juliancolton Tropical Cyclone 04:34, 20 February 2009 (UTC)

Well done, surprised it's taken so long, I'll have to get Tree Sparrow finished to stay ahead, but about to go to Brazil for a fortnight (sigh...) jimfbleak (talk) 09:55, 20 February 2009 (UTC)

My simultaneous nomination of three different articles for peer review

Thanks for letting me know about this mistake. I remember reading that rule, but somehow forgot to apply it. Huntthetroll (talk) 16:28, 19 February 2009 (UTC)

Re: Kinzua Bridge question

Go right ahead with any changes. --D.B.talkcontribs 22:14, 20 February 2009 (UTC)

I'd go with the better source and say 1982. No luck with finding the cost of the reconstruction. --D.B.talkcontribs 18:32, 21 February 2009 (UTC)

Work on Kizua Bridge is looking pretty good. I'd say it's a good head start on another FA for yet another park. Dincher (talk) 18:50, 21 February 2009 (UTC)

I agree with your thoughts on future work on Kinzua Bridge State Park. Hyner is a possible FA too, depending on what we can find in history and geology. I am taking all the PA counties off my watchlist and all the cities from the template. I will update as I come across smaller places that need watching. Dincher (talk) 20:32, 21 February 2009 (UTC)
I am going to miss working on wiki. But I am needed elswhere. I have now removed all the largest boroughs on the PA template from my watchlist, except, Plum. The only city is Williamsport. Dincher (talk) 20:43, 21 February 2009 (UTC)

I'll take to FAC probably once Michael Devore and Finetooth have chance to look at it. Your welcome to support it. I'd mention that you helped put the finishing touches onto the article, but I wouldn't think there'd be any problems. If you decide not to, I'd give you credit in the nomination.

I also still have some photos of the bridge and of the park that I could upload. --D.B.talkcontribs 03:59, 22 February 2009 (UTC)

I'd be glad to have a look. I'll wait until tomorrow to start fresh. Finetooth (talk) 05:11, 22 February 2009 (UTC)

Map of the state of Washington

Hi there. Thanks for putting together this map of the state of Washington. I've just noticed that there appears to be a problem with Thurston County, which is shown on your map as landlocked but which, in fact, borders Puget Sound. I thought I'd let you know. Many thanks. — Lincolnite (talk) 14:35, 22 February 2009 (UTC)

Peer review for SR Leader Class steam locomotive.

Hello, Ruhrfisch. I seem to recall that you reviewed the LSWR N15 class article during its FA progression, and made many worthwhile comments on the style of the article. I am therefore wondering whether you are interested in doing a peer review of the above article, as part of an ongoing process to move this one up to FA status. Regards, --Bulleid Pacific (talk) 13:45, 24 February 2009 (UTC)

Thank you for your review of the above article, it was most instructive. Most, if not all the modifications you highlighted have been dealt with, and there are a couple more photographs of the Leader that I wish to add in due course. Regards, --Bulleid Pacific (talk) 01:49, 27 February 2009 (UTC)

Regarding this

Just a note regarding this, the first full use is in the intro, fourth sentence; I added the abbreviation in there after you said in the FAC. -- Sabre (talk) 20:06, 24 February 2009 (UTC)

Another accursed Antarctic map

I hesitate to ask you again to help me with a map, but at least this one is quite straightforward. It doesn't involve creating a new map, merely drawing some voyage lines on an existing one. All the details are on User:Brianboulton/Sandbox3. If you could spare a moment to look at this, I'd be most grateful; perhaps you could tell me if you foresee any problem? Thanks indeed, either way. Brianboulton (talk) 22:56, 24 February 2009 (UTC)

Zak Salmon

I would like all the codes used to create the page that you irresponsibly deleted without a debate. Mattshank (talk) 01:23, 25 February 2009 (UTC)

I don't think it meets the criteria, because it rather obviously stated why the subject was important or significant. And furthermore, I wish to use the code to create a page off of my own page as I have read I can do. Mattshank (talk) 02:41, 25 February 2009 (UTC)

PR Box

Thanks for the note. The PR box is now on my user page. :) Pax85 (talk) 06:20, 25 February 2009 (UTC)

Thanks

Thank you for the encouraging note. I'll take a look at the userbox. Wronkiew (talk) 02:08, 26 February 2009 (UTC)

quick question

What program did you use to make File:Millennium_Park_Map.PNG? It is a fantastic map and I would like to make something similar for another group of articles! Thanks --TorsodogTalk 04:04, 27 February 2009 (UTC)

Favor

Hey, could you do me a favor? Mtpascoe (talk · contribs) keeps copying text from two other articles and pasting it into the article Harry Kellar, as well copying and pasting text from a website. I left a note on the user's talk page asking that they paraphrase the material instead of copying word for word, where I mentioned the specifics if you wish to see them. They've since added the material back without any type of response. You don't suppose you could protect the page or something? --D.B.talkcontribs 20:55, 27 February 2009 (UTC)

Thanks, I'll keep an eye on it. --D.B.talkcontribs 21:26, 27 February 2009 (UTC)
I'll be sending Kinzua to FAC possibly tomorrow night. I'm traveling back home tonight for spring break and won't be online. If I happen to find internet, I might do it during my layover at Penn Station. --D.B.talkcontribs 21:57, 27 February 2009 (UTC)
...and Mtpascoe just reverted again, now. --D.B.talkcontribs
Thanks. Getting ready to head out the door. --D.B.talkcontribs 22:25, 27 February 2009 (UTC)

Antarctic map

Thanks indeed for the map. I have decided not to clutter it with letter references; would it be possible just to add date information as follows?

  • South Georgia: 20.11.22
  • 118°E: 1.2.23
  • 0°: 23.2.23
  • S. Sandwich Is: 28.2.23

One of the main purposes of the map is to show that, for his return journey to 0° (the curved line), Captain Morrell's claimed voyage track was, for parts of the way at least, within the then undiscovered Antarctic coastline. His Enderby Land position was about 100 miles inland! At present, the curved line doesn't really indicate this; could the curve be straightened a little, to emphasise the "landward" nature of his claimed journey? A shallow curve to the Enderby position, followed by a straight line to 0°, might be the best way of doing this. I'm sorry to have to ask you to make these adjustments; perhaps I should have made the map's purpose clearer to begin with. Do let me know if what I'm asking is a problem, and thanks again for your work. Brianboulton (talk) 10:08, 28 February 2009 (UTC)

The voyage line is just fine, now. I think just the four dates will do, they are the most relevant ones. Suggest the dates in black. I am trying some positions for the map in the Benjamin Morrell article (which will be in PR soon). Most grateful. Brianboulton (talk) 15:14, 28 February 2009 (UTC)
I think the map is perfect now. "Morrell Antarctic Voyage 1822.png" would be an appropriate name. Can you ping me when it's uploaded and confirm the name so I can incorporate the latest version into the article (where it looks great, by the way)? Brianboulton (talk) 17:05, 28 February 2009 (UTC)
All checked out! Now for PR. Brianboulton (talk) 19:21, 28 February 2009 (UTC)

Queue bump

Hi again. Can you take a look at the hooks at Next next update and put them into queue 3 if you think they're up to scratch? We've got some non-admin editors helping out with assembling updates, so if you could in general keep an eye on T:DYK/N and T:DYK/NN, that would be great. Shubinator (talk) 16:53, 28 February 2009 (UTC)

Thank you! Shubinator (talk) 17:14, 28 February 2009 (UTC)

Thanks! for NRHP infobox rollout support

The Teamwork Barnstar
Thanks for helping along with others in the recent, successful rollout of the new {{infobox NRHP}} infobox. Your support and specific assistance in getting it done is appreciated! We did a good job, as evidenced by no subsequent problems being reported, although it affected 20,000 or so articles. And it was sure more enjoyable working as a team to get it done. Thanks! doncram (talk) 19:50, 28 February 2009 (UTC)
