An important letter[edit]

Dear roads editor,

You may have noticed some changes at WP:USRD lately. Some of them, like the cleanup templates and the stub templates, have been astounding and great. Unfortunately, others have been disturbing.

This has become evidenced by the departure of a few prominent editors at USRD, a few RFC's, and much fighting among USRD editors.

After the second RFC, many of us found the opportunity to take a step away from Wikipedia for a while--as a self-imposed wikibreak, or possibly on vacation.

The result of such introspection was that many of us were placing ourselves in a "walled garden" and on a self-imposed pedestal of authority over the roads department. Also, we were being hostile to a few users who were not agreeing with us.

In fact, IRC has been the main incarnation of this "walled garden." Decisions have been made there to conduct grudges and prejudices against a few valued USRD users with poor justification.

For this, we have come to apologize. We have come to ask your forgiveness.

In addition to this, we hope to work as one USRD team from now on and to encourage cooperation instead of the promotion of interests.

All users are welcome to collaborate on IRC, the newsletter, or anywhere else at USRD.

In the future, please feel free to approach us about any issues you may have.

Regards,

Rschen7754 (talk - contribs) 17:21, 9 August 2007 (UTC)

Hi, SFGiants. It turns out we have a problem. As you may have noticed from the discussion on the project talk page (if you still read it now), your assuming the position of the coordinators in handing out awards in the name of the project is a bit of an issue. Especially considering that you handed them out before we conducted our quality reviews. We had hoped it wouldn't be a problem, but considering reviews revealed that some editors did not earn their awards, you've brought us to a Wikipedia first. We can't just go around deleting barnstars, but they aren't worth much and they undermine the project when they're given out to those who didn't earn them. What are your thoughts? Welcome![edit]

re: Elizabethton, Tennessee[edit]

Greetings:

You might want to reconsider your recent edit of Elizabethton, Tennessee as the spelling of this section title was correctly transcribed from an excerpt of the London Gazette Tuesday August 6, 1771 pertaining to the Regulator Movement and the Battle of Alamance in North Carolina. A group of the Regulators left North Carolina to become some of the earliest settlers in Elizabethton, Tennessee.

Thank you for your consideration in this matter.Bee Cliff River Slob 03:51, 14 August 2007 (UTC)

reminder to mentor[edit]

Hola Mentors!

Im sending you this reminder because you volunteered to mentor my students in English Advanced B as they become contributing members of the Wikipedia community. We start working with Wikipedia in earnest next week. I ask you to take a look at your entry in the Mentor Table at Wikipedia:School_and_university_projects/ITESM_Campus_Toluca/Mentors

Please update the information, esp. with what your technical and informational expertise is or, if you have decided that you no longer want to participate, please remove your information from the table. Please watch the pages associated with the project. Students will contact you via your user page and as soon as my students have user pages, I will put them on the navigation bar associated with the project.

I don’t need to remind you that your job is NOT to write their assignments for them, of course. I certainly will tell my students that… and the fact that you are volunteers that don’t have to help them… so they need to be nice. If any students misbehave (tho I don’t expect it) don’t hesistate to contact me and I will take care of it. The goal of this project is to integrate successfully into the Wikipedia community. Anyway… what I really need your help with is helping students get oriented to Wikipedia, make appropriate changes and write about appropriate topics (see Wikipedia:School_and_university_projects/ITESM_Campus_Toluca/Syllabus for assignments). I also need your technical expertise… I am only an English teacher after all! I appreciate what technology does for us but I am no technical expert!

Again, thank you for volunteering and you will hear from us again soon! Thelmadatter 20:07, 28 August 2007 (UTC)Thelmadatter

  1. Please update your information at Wikipedia:WikiProject U.S. Roads/Participants, our new centralized participant list. Those who have not done so by October 20th will be removed.
  2. There are important discussions taking place at WT:USRD relating to whether WP:USRD, WP:HWY, or the state projects should hold the "power" in the roads projects.

FROM THE SOUTH[edit]

Hi again! I am, Belen from FROM THE SOUTH group, do you remember us? Well, we previously asked you for help in our Advanced English final project. It was required for us to extend a stub or write a new article that does noy exist at Wikipedia, about any topic of our country. FROM THE SOUTH decided to extend a stub. We found Amecameca's page could be a good option. We proceeded to add relevant information supported by reliable sources about this municipality of Mexico. We would like you to read it and give us some feedback. You can check it at>>> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amecameca
Please if you have any comments or suggestions feel free to write us at our group discussion page at >>> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_talk:School_and_university_projects/ITESM_Campus_Toluca/From_the_South

so that our teacher could be able to see it and grade us. Than you very much for you time and attention.--Belen Rios 06:27, 14 November 2007 (UTC)

Thanks and Happy New Year[edit]

Firstly, let me wish you a very happy New Year and thank you for your help in the Milhist Tag & Assess 2007 drive.

Secondly, although the Tag & Assess 2007 drive is now officially closed, you are very welcome to continue tagging and assessing until 31 January 2008. Any articles you tag and assess during this time will be credited fully to your tagging tally for further award purposes.

Thirdly, if you can find the time, it would be great to have your feedback/comments and participation in the recently-set-up Tag & Assess workshop The idea is to see what lessons we can learn from the 2007 drive to make the 2008 one more efficient and enjoyable.

Fair use rationale for Image:KNBR.gif[edit]

Nuvola apps important.svg

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:KNBR.gif. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use. Suggestions on how to do so can be found here.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Rockfang (talk) 04:17, 6 January 2008 (UTC)

Disputed fair use rationale for Image:Portalimage.gif[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Portalimage.gif. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Speedy deletion of Template:LangBR[edit]

A tag has been placed on Template:LangBR requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section T3 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a deprecated or orphaned template. After seven days, if it is still unused and the speedy deletion tag has not been removed, the template will be deleted.

If the template is intended to be substituted, please feel free to remove the speedy deletion tag and please consider putting a note on the template's page indicating that it is substituted so as to avoid any future mistakes (<noinclude>{{tranclusionless}}</noinclude>).

Disputed fair use rationale for Image:CUSD.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:CUSD.jpg. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot (talk) 03:55, 12 February 2008 (UTC)

Orphaned non-free media (Image:Challengerlogo.gif)[edit]

Nuvola apps important blue.svg Thanks for uploading Image:Challengerlogo.gif. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 12:12, 13 March 2008 (UTC)

Roosevelt[edit]

Hi, there seems to be some general confusion about the pronunciation of the Roosevelts' name, even within the FDR article. I've tried to find a few reliable sources for this info.

M-W gives:

Main Entry:

Roo·se·velt Pronunciation:

\ˈrō-zə-vəlt (Roosevelts' usual pron.), -ˌvelt also ˈrü-\

Dictionary.com gives:

Roo·se·velt /ˈroʊzəˌvɛlt, -vəlt, ˈroʊzvɛlt, -vəlt; spelling pron. ˈruzəˌvɛlt/

Inogolo gives this about Teddy's name:

Name: Roosevelt Phonetic Pronunciation: ROAZ-uh-velt

Notes: There has been much debate about the correct pronunciation of Roosevelt's last name, however, in several letters Theodore Roosevelt himself specifies the correct pronunciation. In a letter to the Rev. William W. Moir dated October 10, 1898 he writes:

As for my name, it is pronounced as if it was spelled "Rosavelt." That is in three syllables. The first syllable as if it was "Rose."

Note that none of these sources make a distinction between Teddy and FDR, despite the claims of some that they preferred different pronunciations. At the very least, each article should be internally consistent. For Teddy, it seems to be clear that it's /ˈɹoʊzəvɛlt/. His statement above makes that pretty clear. FDR's case doesn't seem to be as unequivocal, but the same pronunciation seems to be the preferred one in most media. The most common variant seems to be the barely noticeably different /ˈɹoʊzəvəlt/. Most seem to cite the preferred pronunciation of the name being three syllables, not two. -- χγʒ͡ʒγʋᾳ (talk) 20:51, 1 July 2008 (UTC)

German FMs[edit]

"Regarding this edit, while Borussification may not be appropriate for Germany prior to 1867, the German Imperial government was undoubtably more or less identical to the Prussian government, and the Prussian Foreign Minister was the closest equivalent to a German foreign minister, in the political role with which we associate such offices today."

That still doesn't make Prussian ministers in office before 1870 German ministers - and that was what my edit was all about. Str1977 (talk) 07:27, 3 April 2009 (UTC)

That's fine, but the ones after 1870 were also removed. ¿SFGiДnts! ¿Complain! ¿Analyze! ¿Review! 21:14, 3 April 2009 (UTC)

And rightfully so, I removed all Prussian FMs from the template titled German FMs. In as much as they were German FMs - some indeed held the office at the same time or at slightly differing times - they are of course included in the grouping "German Empire 1871-1918)". But those that merely were Prussian FMs are excluded from this template. They have no business being in there.
The gist is: the template lists German FMs and only German FMs are listed. Not Prussian FMs or Bavarian FMs or Badian FMs or FMs of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha. Only German ones! Str1977 (talk) 21:19, 3 April 2009 (UTC)

AfD nomination of Election results in 2009[edit]

Ambox warning pn.svg

An editor has nominated one or more articles which you have created or worked on, for deletion. The nominated article is Election results in 2009. We appreciate your contributions, but the nominator doesn't believe that the article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion and has explained why in his/her nomination (see also Wikipedia:Notability and "What Wikipedia is not").

Your opinions on whether the article meets inclusion criteria and what should be done with the article are welcome; please participate in the discussion(s) by adding your comments to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Election results in 2009. Please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~).

You may also edit the article during the discussion to improve it but should not remove the articles for deletion template from the top of the article; such removal will not end the deletion debate.

Please note: This is an automatic notification by a bot. I have nothing to do with this article or the deletion nomination, and can't do anything about it. --Erwin85Bot (talk) 01:06, 19 December 2009 (UTC)

You are now a Reviewer[edit]

Wikipedia Reviewer.svg

Hello. Your account has been granted the "reviewer" userright, allowing you to review other users' edits on certain flagged pages. Pending changes, also known as flagged protection, is currently undergoing a two-month trial scheduled to end 15 August 2010.

Reviewers can review edits made by users who are not autoconfirmed to articles placed under pending changes. Pending changes is applied to only a small number of articles, similarly to how semi-protection is applied but in a more controlled way for the trial. The list of articles with pending changes awaiting review is located at Special:OldReviewedPages.

When reviewing, edits should be accepted if they are not obvious vandalism or BLP violations, and not clearly problematic in light of the reason given for protection (see Wikipedia:Reviewing process). More detailed documentation and guidelines can be found here.

If you do not want this userright, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. Courcelles (talk) 18:37, 19 June 2010 (UTC)

Added template for SuggestBot[edit]

Hi,

Thanks for being one of SuggestBot's users! I hope you have found the bot's suggestions useful.

We are in the process of switching from our previous list-based signup process to using templates and userboxes, and I have therefore added the appropriate template to your user talk page. You should receive the first set of suggestions within a day, and since we'll be automating SuggestBot you will from then on continue to receive them regularly at the desired frequency.

We now also have a userbox that you can use to let others know you're using SuggestBot, and if you don't want to clutter your user talk page the bot can post to a sub-page in your userspace. More information about the userbox and usage of the template is available on User:SuggestBot/Getting Recommendations Regularly.

If there are any questions, please don't hesitate to get in touch with me on my user talk page. Thanks again, Nettrom (talk) 20:45, 17 February 2011 (UTC)
