AcademiaNet resubmission

Dear SL93 I am trying to save Draft:AcademiaNet from deletion and want to resubmit it. I read your comment about it (Sounds more like an advertising) but am, to be honest, at a total loss how I could improve the article to meet that criticism. I can't find any embellishment in the wording (maybe the Angela Merkel quote? But I don't think it violates guidelines and is relevant to state the purpose of the project?) and I think as an official project of the Swiss National Science Foundation and the sanctioned collaboration of over 40 other governemental institutions across europe it also clears notability criteria. Could you give me some pointers how to improve the article (I'm mainly active in the german wikipedia so am not that familiar with the ENG-standards), I would be sad to see such an important academic project which solely focus on women to not be represented. Nicky Hayes

The AFC script had a major failure, and didn't remove the AFC comments either. I removed the AFC comments, but didn't notice that the draft template was still there.

It may have been ultimately my mistake, but it is more likely the mistake of the author. The author inserted a comment in the draft. I cut the comment and the AFC question that it answered, and pasted them onto the talk page. I think of this as moving the comment to the back of the page, because I think of a talk page as the back of the article. Either the author or I did something that caused the AFC script not to do the cleanup well. So then I removed the AFC comments, but didn't notice the draft template. That is what happened, which ultimately is the result of editors acting like humans and doing things that the scripts didn't plan on. Robert McClenon (talk) 04:40, 28 November 2020 (UTC)

Hi, thank you for taking the time to look at my first attempt at a wikipedia contribution. I found the interface a bit challenging.

I created the page about Jorg with the intent of then getting all the academics and political leaders that worked with him and that are still using his ideas today to contribute to the page. Many of them will be able to provide direct links to content and to how his ideas are still being used. Last year we held a memorial meeting in Germany with more than 30 scholars that are still working with his ideas, and they all committed to contributing. However, a committee cannot write a wiki page, and therefore I agreed to make a first effort.

As I do not speak good enough German, I cannot interview his mother and his close relations for more personal information.

So I do not know what to do to proceed. In the near future we will have buildings and libraries named after Jorg, so I am just wondering how one reviewer can decide that somebodys life was not significant? There are more than 60 countries using Jorgs models to develop innovation, technology, industrial and local economy policies.

Shawncunningham There are claims to notability in the article and there are potentially ways to make those claims significant enough to show notabiltiy per WP:PROF. There is the statement "Following his death, the German Development Institute described Jörg as one of Germanys most creative and productive development researchers" is an example because the article has no indications of how significant that institute is. The project that he led isn't sourced. "The concepts Jörg developed have strongly influenced the work of international development organisations such as the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit" is a great start because the organization has an article, but a few sourced examples would work well. I would be glad to approve the draft once these issues are fixed and I also have the draft in my watchlist to check up on. "There are more than 60 countries using Jorgs models to develop innovation, technology, industrial and local economy policies" is great also, but the draft makes no mention of such a thing. My being the "main promoter" has nothing to do with cruising around the noms page to format hooks and occasionally leave a drive-by comment. And I certainly don't feel I'm the gatekeeper to the queues. And I would much rather have one or two other people regularly build sets, like Cwmhiraeth and I used to take turns before she became an admin. But when there's not a lot of approved noms available to build well-rounded sets, like now, I take a break from promoting and go do reviews. Then I post on Cwmhiraeth's page and ping you too to promote all the hooks I can't. Thank you for the alts; they're much better. I'll go ahead and do the review. New Page Patrol December Newsletter

Hello SL93,

Year in review

It has been a productive year for New Page Patrol as we've roughly cut the size of the New Page Patrol queue in half this year. We have been fortunate to have a lot of great work done by Rosguill who was the reviewer of the most pages and redirects this past year. Thanks and credit go to JTtheOG and Onel5969 who join Rosguill in repeating in the top 10 from last year. Thanks to John B123, Hughesdarren, and Mccapra who all got the NPR permission this year and joined the top 10. Also new to the top ten is DannyS712 bot III, programmed by DannyS712 which has helped to dramatically reduce the number of redirects that have needed human patrolling by patrolling certain types of redirects (e.g. for differences in accents) and by also patrolling editors who are on on the redirect whitelist.

Thank you for looking at the draft of the article. The feedback mentioned specifically that there should be "published, reliable, secondary sources that are independent of the subject". I was wondering why the references citing "The New Arab" didn't meet this criteria? The google translate version of the website translated into English are accurate and show "independence" from the subject. Carlsba Both the "Wooden Castle" article and the "Jerusalem Jaffa Road" from The New Arab was written by the article's subject. That is clearly not "independent of the subject". The "Palestine 2019" article only mentions the subject in one sentence, in relation to his short story receiving an award. There is no indication that the award is a notable one. The "Young Writers" article is one source with significant coverage that is independent of the subject. I have my doubts about the awards being significant because the article states that he has been called an "emerging writer". SL93 (talk) 23:47, 14 December 2020 (UTC)

SL93 I was wondering about the ArabLit source in the draft? They are independent from the subject and I think they, along with the other sources, provide the minimum standard for being published in Wikipedia. Namely, does the subject exist and are they notable. Even though Ameer did receive an emerging writer, I think given his output and previous translation into English, his article should be considered for publication. Draft:USPS Building Bridges Special Postal Cancellation Series

I took an interest in a draft that you rejected for not being significant. Seeing that the intial article was merely a repeat of press releases by USPS, I would have agreed with you. But, I did further research and found more than 100 references that showed its significance both in California, the US and Internationally. I did a significant re-write of the article and added more than 20 of the references I found. I believe that this should be a wikipedia article for the following reasons:

• Significant coverage: the article I wrote addresses the topic directly and in detail, so that no original research is needed to extract the content. The sources are major newspapers and international magazines that are more than 100 years in continuance, such as San Francisco Chronicle, Music Trades Magazine, and more. In some cases, more than 100 citations were available in the local media surrounding an event, and I only listed some of them, to avoid having too many citations.
• Reliable coverage includes major journalists and authors of notability.
• Sources are secondary sources, including newspapers, radio, television, and government resolutions recognizing significance.
• I am independent of the subject.
• Unique series of cancellations by a major organization that is more than 200 years old. The United States Postal Service is one of the oldest and largest Corporations in the United States. This cancellation series has been ongoing for 24 years and remains unique, from what I could find in my research. Most special postal cancellations are one time events, not a series over a period of years. If there had been a set of many different types of cancellations series, I would have created an article on special cancellation series and included the USPS Building Bridges as one of those. But, in my research, I could not find any other series spanning this time period, that used the same symbol repeatedly and had so much newspaper and media coverage per event. So, I think it merits its own page.
• Each of the postal cancellations that I researched fit within a context that was culturally significant for the time. For example, the Music Recording theme for the USPS Building Bridges Spacial Cancellation Series was at the closing of one of the last large recording studios, Fantasy Studios, in a series of closings of studios spanning more than 10 years. It is also the first music recording history theme that I could find in any Special Postal Cancellations globally, from my research.

I would be most interested to know if you think that this page is worthy of being a wikipedia page on your review of it now. I appreciate your experience. I am a new writer to Wikipedia, so I am sure I have more to learn. But, my goal here is to help add good research and reliable citations from worth sources to articles that seem to merit it. The article written was rejected for not having "significant coverage" about the subject in published, reliable, secondary sources that are independent of the subject.

I believe such rejection is wrong. Would you be able to, please, help me with this matter?

All sources (but one) are not related in any shape or form to the subject in matter. One of the sources, A Tarde, is a 108-year-old journal that is also on Wikipedia. All resources are secondary (not related), reliable, independent, and experienced.

The article is about an international American school that is not located in one of the main cities in the country. That said, it is impossible to exist an article from an international outlet. Even schools such as St. Paul's or Graded in São Paulo do not have such coverage. What I can guarantee, and what you can check is, that there is, in fact, significant coverage.

I would have been glad to double-check when I received your early message, but I was surprised with how you reacted when it could also be resolved by speaking nicely. Dormskirk Thank you. Although, that edit summary from Apophis-the-great is very strange. According to White Pass and Yukon Route and its sources, three companies came together to build the railroad in 1897 so it couldn't have been completed in 1892. Request for clarification

Hello, Towards the end of December you rejected my article Draft:Direction Finding by Amplitude Comparison.
Initially I wasn’t sure why you made the comment that I hadn't addressed the concerns of the previous reviewer. However, I have (slowly!) come to realize what your comment meant (I think).

When the article was previously rejected, I had some discussions with the editor who suggested the material needed a better introduction. At the time I took that to mean the article should better introduce the technique of microwave direction finding, so I expanded the introductory section. I now think what was wanted was a clearer, more basic, description of the mathematical concepts underlying the method, before presenting the main details. Am I correct?

Once the situation is clear, I will try and redraft the article, although I am concerned that you think it is not suitable for Wikipedia.

Hi, Thank you for your response.
The material could be added to the existing article and I did consider doing this, initially, and I'm still not adverse to doing that. However, I decided not to do it for the following reasons.
1. The article would become excessively long.
2. The techniques and equipment involved, at microwave frequencies, are quite different to those at RF. Any any case the previous techniques are unsuitable for detecting a transmitter bent on avoiding detection. (I wish I had called my article "Microwave Direction Finding" to better distinguish it from the existing article).
3. The existing article talks, in general terms (but quite clearly), about the techniques of DF prior to the second world war. My aim, rightly or wrongly, is to to show, explicitly, how an antenna array determines the bearing of an incoming signal. This does involve mathematical equations and I give references for the really interested reader. Consequently, the two approaches are rather different, and may look odd in the same article.
What do you think? Should I go to the AFC help desk, as you suggest? (Also, I remain concerned that the content may need amending)

It isn't just there being secondary coverage. The secondary coverage also has to show notability per WP:N. Profiles on websites for the organization doesn't show notability (ugei, wujs, consiglionazionale-giovani). Blogs are typically unreliable sources (shalom). Interviews are primary sources (avantionline). YouTube and Spotify are not reliable sources. Italiaisraeletoday is a broken link. The 13th reference redirects back to the article. WikiCup 2021 March newsletter

Round 1 of the competition has finished; it was a high-scoring round with 21 contestants scoring more than 100 points. Everyone with a positive score moves on to Round 2, with 55 contestants qualifying. You will need to finish among the top thirty-two contestants in Round 2 if you are to qualify for Round 3. Our top scorers in Round 1 were:

• Epicgenius led the field with a featured article, nine good articles and an assortment of other submissions, specialising on buildings and locations in New York, for a total of 945 points.
• Bloom6132 was close behind with 896 points, largely gained from 71 "In the news" items, mostly recent deaths.
• ImaginesTigers, who has been editing Wikipedia for less than a year, was in third place with 711 points, much helped by bringing League of Legends to featured article status, exemplifying how bonus points can boost a contestant's score.
• Amakuru came next with 708 points, Kigali being another featured article that scored maximum bonus points.
• Ktin, new to the WikiCup, was in fifth place with 523 points, garnered from 15 DYKs and 34 "In the news" items.
• The Rambling Man scored 511 points, many from featured article candidate reviews and from football related DYKs.
• Gog the Mild, last year's runner-up, came next with 498 points, from a featured article and numerous featured article candidate reviews.
• Hog Farm, at 452, scored for a featured article, four good articles and a number of reviews.
• Le Panini, another newcomer to the WikiCup, scored 438 for a featured article and three good articles.
• Lee Vilenski, last year's champion, scored 332 points, from a featured article and various other sport-related topics.

These contestants, like all the others, now have to start again from scratch. In Round 1, contestants achieved eight featured articles, three featured lists and one featured picture, as well as around two hundred DYKs and twenty-seven ITNs. They completed 97 good article reviews, nearly double the 52 good articles they claimed. Contestants also claimed for 135 featured article and featured list candidate reviews. There is no longer a requirement to mention your WikiCup participation when undertaking these reviews.

Remember that any content promoted after the end of Round 1 but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. Hi SL93: I saw your note in Prep 6 saying that the picture slot should be a non-bio pic. Are we supposed to be alternating bio & no bio hooks in the lead spot? (That's what I've gathered from conversations on the talk page anyway.) You'd put the Japanese route pic as lead spot in Prep 5, so I'm wondering if it should be a bio pic in 6. Hi SL93: I'm just curious as to why you didn't just return the original picture hook back to Prep 7, rather than replacing the Armenian genocide hook with something else. MeegsC For the image hooks, I became confused as to where they used to be at. When I moved a building hook out of one set, it was because I moved a building hook to that set as an image. WikiCup 2021 May newsletter

The second round of the 2021 WikiCup has now finished; it was a high-scoring round and contestants needed 61 points to advance to Round 3. There were some impressive efforts in the round, with the top eight contestants all scoring more than 400 points. A large number of the points came from the 12 featured articles and the 110 good articles achieved in total by contestants, as well as the 216 good article reviews they performed; the GAN backlog drive and the stay-at-home imperative during the COVID-19 pandemic may have been partially responsible for these impressive figures.

Our top scorers in Round 2 were:

• The Rambling Man, with 2963 points from three featured articles, 20 featured article reviews, 37 good articles, 73 good article reviews, as well as 22 DYKs.
• Epicgenius, with 1718 points from one featured article, 29 good articles, 16 DYKs and plenty of bonus points.
• Bloom6132, with 990 points from 13 DYKs and 64 "In the news" items, mostly recent deaths.
• Hog Farm, with 834 points from two featured articles, five good articles, 14 featured article reviews and 15 good article reviews.
• Gog the Mild, with 524 points from two featured articles and four featured article reviews.
• Lee Vilenski, with 501 points from one featured article, three good articles, six featured article reviews and 25 good article reviews.
• Sammi Brie, with 485 points from four good articles, eight good article reviews and 27 DYKs, on US radio and television stations.
• Ktin, with 436 points from four good articles, seven DYKs and 11 "In the news" items.

Hello @SL93:, I want to make Emiway Bantai. I tried once before to create an article Emiway Bantai (Indian rapper), but it was deleted, which probably would not have passed GNG at that time. Then I found a Machayenge article from Emiway on Wiki. When I checked that article, it turned out that it was created by CptViraj. He is also an NPR. When I talked to him about this, he said that he was previously associated with this subject. So now he does not want to make it. Then I saw their sandbox which was made to make User:CptViraj/sandbox/Emiway Bantai. Recently I have prepared an article on their sandbox. Therefore, I will ask you to review it. I'm sorry you feel that an unjustified 'jab'. DYK is a favorite main page feature for me. But I am constantly finding that the text of linked articles contains embarrassing flaws.

And while lately there hasn't been a repeat of "which of three surgeons actually removed the Prince of Wales' appendix?" there remains a persistent disdain for the actual text. Some days it is every third article.

Check through my latest edits for examples. "instrusions" remained after all the reviewers objections were addressed?

I have brought up the persistence of uncaring repeatedly, but almost always the answer is "but we're doing important stuff, too much to consider reading..." It is 'process' over 'content'.

WikiCup 2021 July newsletter

The third round of the 2021 WikiCup has now come to an end. Each of the sixteen contestants who made it into the fourth round had at least 294 points, and our top six scorers all had over 600 points. They were:

• The Rambling Man, with 1825 points from 3 featured articles, 44 featured article reviews, 14 good articles, 30 good article reviews and 10 DYKs. In addition, he completed a 34-article good topic on the EFL Championship play-offs.
• Epicgenius, a New York specialist, with 1083 points from 2 featured article reviews, 18 good articles, 30 DYKs and plenty of bonus points.
• Bloom6132, with 869 points from 11 DYKs, all with bonus points, and 54 "In the news" items, mostly covering people who had recently died.
• Gog the Mild, with 817 points from 3 featured articles on historic battles in Europe, 5 featured article reviews and 3 good articles.
• Hog Farm, with 659 points from 2 featured articles and 2 good articles on American Civil War battles, 18 featured article reviews, 2 good articles, 6 good article reviews and 4 DYKs.
• BennyOnTheLoose, a snooker specialist and new to the Cup, with 647 points from a featured article, 2 featured article reviews, 6 good articles, 6 good article reviews and 3 DYKs.

In round three, contestants achieved 19 featured articles, 7 featured lists, 106 featured article reviews, 72 good articles, 1 good topic, 62 good article reviews, 165 DYKs and 96 ITN items. We enter the fourth round with scores reset to zero; any content promoted after the end of round 3 but before the start of round 4 can be claimed in round 4. Please also remember that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them (one contestant in round 3 lost out because of this). When doing GARs, please make sure that you check that all the GA criteria are fully met.

I'll continue to work on it to see if I can revise and improve it. I do now see a couple of minor NPOV copy editing spots but not a page-wide general tone. Perhaps you can confirm my assumptions. (Most charities have very simple public footprints even if they have significant and ongoing societal impacts: they raise money and give it away. Regionally important organizations, such as this one, also serve as 'rain-makers' in bringing together and coordinating public and private entities. So, a concise description of their processes and the initiatives might inherently seem promotional.) So, I just want to make sure this is an issue of copy editing and not inherent content. @Zatsugaku: Your draft has language that is often used in promotional articles - "seeks to", "fulfill this mission", having a mission section in general, "through a competitive process", "aimed toward", "building a healthy and vibrant region", "endeaver to", having a Leadership initiatives section in general, and "its goal". The quoted content look spammy - "“The Community Foundation serves and inspires people to build philanthropy for our region and to engage in our community.” Even if the promotional language is taken care of, I still don't think it passes WP:ORG. Thanks so much for those details; that will be very helpful. I see that other similar pages typically replace those sections with an expanded History, etc., and more neutral language. (Perhaps only about 1/4 of non-profit organizations have a Mission section.) On WP there are many Community foundation pages, most seem to be stubs or starter grade. I was shooting for somewhat higher quality launch, and I thought this page Chicago Community Trust looked like a good model. However, I understand some of the underlying differences. (It would be helpful if there were agreed upon exemplars; maybe there are and I've missed them.) I'm working both to be able to provide mentorship to new wikipedia editors and to become a page reviewer, so I'm looking at these topics/policies and my errors in almost OCD detail, doing deep dives on talk page archives, and trying to formulate how I would offer guidance to others. Re General Notability, there are more news stories for this organization; I was having some trouble until I inquired about its prior entity names going back to 1968. So I think I can meet WP:ORGCRIT/Primary. (I see that WP:NONPROFIT seemingly implies a hurdle that other organizations are not subject to. But on closer reading, it is "an optional, alternative method" whose standards confer an affirmative assumption. Thus, not meeting NONPROFIT, i.e., not being national in scope, should not confer a negative assumption.) Zatsugaku (talk) 17:23, 19 July 2021 (UTC)

WikiCup 2021 September newsletter

The fourth round of the competition has finished with over 500 points being required to qualify for the final round. It was a hotly competitive round with two contestants, The Rambling Man and Epicgenius, each scoring over 3000 points, and six contestants scoring over 1000. All but one of the finalists achieved one or more FAs during the round, the exception being Bloom6132 who demonstrated that 61 "in the news" items produces an impressive number of points. Other contestants who made it to the final are Gog the Mild, Lee Vilenski, BennyOnTheLoose, Amakuru and Hog Farm. However, all their points are now swept away and everyone starts afresh in the final round.

Round 4 saw the achievement of 18 featured articles and 157 good articles. Bilorv scored for a 25-article good topic on Black Mirror but narrowly missed out on qualifying for the final round. There was enthusiasm for FARs, with 89 being performed, and there were 63 GARs and around 100 DYKs during the round. As we start round 5, we say goodbye to the eight competitors who didn't quite make it to the final round; thank you for the useful contributions you have made to the Cup and Wikipedia, and we hope you will join us again next year. For other contestants, remember that any content promoted after the end of round 4 but before the start of round 5 can be claimed in round 5. Remember too that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them.
