Discussion: Agnostic Atheism and Reliability of Wikipedia
[edit]So you got rid of the talk regarding "Agnostic Atheism" (and Wikinights stated here on your talke page that he was offended) when that term is minimally passible as a legitimate term according to Professor Paul Draper of Perdue University, (whose credentials are beyond reproach), who wrote on this subject in the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy which is put together by the top Professors at the top Universities in the country? [1][2]
Here is what is offensive. You and others thinking that a book written in 1894 by James Alexander Harrison, which has no Bibliography, (Professor Drapers does), which is basically just a book of his viewpoints on subjects is superior? That is not only totally offensive in and of itself that people editing would believe this, it is also totally offensive to users of Wikipedia that rely on accurate up to date information and resources.
Further Proof of Wikipedia's Non-Reliability:
I was Manager of Financial Planning and Analysis for Brinks Home Security. When unpacking after a move recently I came across my business card. So of course it brought back memories. I thought I would check to see what was written about Brinks Home Security on Wikipedia. It was pretty much a joke. So I corrected some things. A user that only went by an IP address reverted my changes back. So I don't know if it's still there, but since just like the Agnostic Atheism piece it's a waste of time to put in accurate information, from reliable sources, today I put in the following at the top of the page.
"Some of the information below is incorrect. I had put in a correction on the top but it got deleted. I worked for Brinks Home Security from 1986-1991, first as a Senior Financial Analyst, and then as Manager of Financial Planning and Analysis.[3] I can be contacted for further information and verification at 469-613-7236.
Also here is the linkedin page of the second President and CEO of Brinks Home Security, (Peter Michel) from 1988-2001.[4]
Now whoever deleted my correction at the top, would like to get their facts straight on this company, please call me. Or any user can call me to get the correct information."
Now by the time you check this page this information above will probably be deleted again, just like when I made actual corrections. This is why Wikipedia is a joke and I don't use it, nor edit it any longer, (check my history, I made two edits in 2012, then was gone till recently. The only reason I came back was because people on social media cite this piece of crap encyclopedia, which is a piece of crap because anyone can go in and take out factual information. So why, as a professional researcher would I waste my time with a bunch of people who for the most part don't know how to do proper research and put in garbage into an encyclopedia?[5] — Preceding unsigned comment added by Madjess (talk • contribs) 19:47, 19 November 2020 (UTC)
- First of all, I did not get rid of the discussion, I archived it. Second of all, what exactly do you hope to accomplish by writing an essay about why you think Wikipedia is trash? I'm not forcing you to use it, and I don't make all the policies here. And obviously you do still care about Wikipedia if you are willing to write all this about it. [edit]joji
[edit]Hey Saucy, I'm a fairly new editor so i didn't really know how to start a discussion. I tried it before the move but i couldn't figure it out so can you help me? My reasoning behind the move was that the article clearly is about George's whole career rather than just his joji part. I think the name filthy frank is also highly popular just like the name joji is. The name joji can still be used as a redirect if people search for it. Hope you can help me out :) DarkerthanTar (talk) 10:52, 15 July 2021 (UTC)
- @DarkerthanTar: Sure! To start a discussion, go to Talk:Joji (musician) and click the Edit button. At the bottom of the page, add the following:
{{subst:requested move|George Miller (musician)|reason=YOUR REASONING HERE}}
Once you've added your reasoning, save your edits, and you're done. You don't need to do anything after that; a bot will take care of it. Saucy[talk – contribs] 11:01, 15 July 2021 (UTC)

Undid revision 1041564905 by Saucy (talk) Routine Calculations are not considered Original Research
[edit]I composed a spreadsheet that calculates the contribution of each state to the 2010 mean US population center. I then calculated the influence of each state's 2010 to 2020 population change to the 2010 centroid to determine the centroid's 2020 position. I used this method to successfully estimate the 2010 population centroid and post it on this Wikipedia entry, to the apparent appreciation of local residents and regional media. I would like to post my 2020 calculation. I am willing to share my spreadsheet, just tell me how. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 108.50.182.207 (talk) 20:03, 6 September 2021 (UTC)
- @108.50.182.207: I believe that the "routine calculations" clause of the original research policy is more for simple calculations, such as converting between units. However, finding the mean population center of the United States is such a complex calculation that it would be very difficult for other editors to verify that it's true. "Routine calculations do not count as original research, provided there is consensus among editors that the result of the calculation is correct, and a meaningful reflection of the sources." I suspect it would be difficult to get consensus that your result is correct, since it is not an official calculation. Saucy[talk – contribs] 02:57, 8 September 2021 (UTC)
My spreadsheet is fairly simple and straightforward (3 columns of data, 9 columns of calculations, and a row for each US state), and uses only four fundamental mathematical functions: addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, so it is not difficult to interpret. I have a high level of confidence in my method because it worked in 2010. I would like to try to obtain a consensus among the editors of this page that my calculation is an estimate rigorous enough to be added. How do I proceed with consensus-building on this issue? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 63.115.57.2 (talk) 15:59, 13 September 2021 (UTC)
- @63.115.57.2: The original research noticeboard is one place to get opinions on whether it breaks the original research policy. Saucy[talk – contribs] 04:52, 15 September 2021 (UTC)
The article will be discussed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Keemstar until a consensus is reached, and anyone, including you, is welcome to contribute to the discussion. The nomination will explain the policies and guidelines which are of concern. The discussion focuses on high-quality evidence and our policies and guidelines.

Framework Computer - an excessive amount of intricate detail message
[edit]Hi Saucy, thank you for your feedback for the "Framework Computer" page. What parts could be improved especially on the page? This is my first try to "talk" on Wikipedia. Junaruga (talk) 21:50, 25 January 2022 (UTC)
- @Junaruga: Hi there! Thank you very much for all your contributions on the Framework article; I appreciate all the work you've put into expanding and improving the article. But I feel like you actually went a little overboard. See Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not. For example, information about the firmware of the embedded controller isn't relevant to most people, and feels out-of-scope for an encyclopedia. The article also has a lot of links to help guides and forums, which isn't really the purpose of Wikipedia either. Some sections of the article also rely heavily on references to user-generated content, which are generally considered unreliable. Saucy[talk – contribs] 06:28, 26 January 2022 (UTC)
- @Saucy Thank you for your feedback! I am sorry to be late to reply to you. I checked the Wikipedia page "What Wikipedia is not.". I tried to simplify the firmware section, adding other section "mainboards" and "expansion cards" in balance. My intent of the firmware part is because it is only a software developed by the company Framework. It directly affects users experiences. As a person who have seen the users community, I feel that firmware is an important factor of this laptop, unlike other companies laptops. I will continue to improve this page. Thank you. Panera Logo
[edit]Hi there, I see you have edited the Panera Bread logo on wikipedia before. Our marketing department has asked we serve up the wordmark as the logo instead of the images we refer to as "Mother Bread". It's correct now in the USA, but Google is pulling in the old logo still from the German version of wikipedia. Do you know how to replace this logo https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Datei:Panera_Bread_Logo.svg with this one Panera Bread#/media/File:Panera Bread wordmark.svg
Thank you! PaneraTerry (talk) 21:25, 9 December 2022 (UTC)
- @PaneraTerry: I've went ahead and replaced the logo on the German Panera Bread article with the new one, though that hasn't deleted the file. It seems strange to me that Google is specifically pulling the image from the German Wikipedia; I suspect someone from Google has manually set it to do that. To remove it from Google you would probably have to either contact Google or delete the file from the German Wikipedia. Since the Mother Bread version of the logo is copyrighted, it could probably be deleted fairly easily; though I'm not familiar with the German Wikipedia's deletion policies and procedures. Also, since I assume you are employed by Panera, be sure to follow Wikipedia's conflict of interest policy when making any edits. Saucy[talk – contribs] 01:02, 11 December 2022 (UTC)
- Yes, I oversee our search presence as well as some other digital marketing components within Panera. Will definitely read up on that. My objective is to just ensure accuracy, not using Wiki for promotion. If there is someone I should recommend changes to rather then trying to edit it myself I am definitely happy to do it that way! :-). Thank you so much for the help, very much appreciated. Updates for editors
- Readers of 42 more wikis can now use Dark Mode. If the option is not yet available for logged-out users of your wiki, this is likely because many templates do not yet display well in Dark Mode. Please use the night-mode-checker tool if you are interested in helping to reduce the number of issues. The recommendations page provides guidance on this. Dark Mode is enabled on additional wikis once per month.
- Editors using the 2010 wikitext editor as their default can access features from the 2017 wikitext editor by adding
?veaction=editsource
to the URL. If you would like to enable the 2017 wikitext editor as your default, it can be set in your preferences. [2] - For logged-out readers using the Vector 2022 skin, the "donate" link has been moved from a collapsible menu next to the content area into a more prominent top menu, next to "Create an account". This restores the link to the level of prominence it had in the Vector 2010 skin. Learn more about the changes related to donor experiences. [3]
- The CampaignEvents extension provides tools for organizers to more easily manage events, communicate with participants, and promote their events on the wikis. The extension has been enabled on Arabic Wikipedia, Igbo Wikipedia, Swahili Wikipedia, and Meta-Wiki. Chinese Wikipedia has decided to enable the extension, and discussions on the extension are in progress on Spanish Wikipedia and on Wikidata. To learn how to enable the extension on your wiki, you can visit the CampaignEvents page on Meta-Wiki.

Updates for technical contributors
- Developers with an account on Wikitech-wiki should check if any action is required for their accounts. The wiki is being changed to use the single-user-login (SUL) system, and other configuration changes. This change will help reduce the overall complexity for the weekly software updates across all our wikis.
In depth
- The server switch was completed successfully last week with a read-only time of only 2 minutes 46 seconds. This periodic process makes sure that engineers can switch data centers and keep all of the wikis available for readers, even if there are major technical issues. It also gives engineers a chance to do maintenance and upgrades on systems that normally run 24 hours a day, and often helps to reveal weaknesses in the infrastructure. The process involves dozens of software services and hundreds of hardware servers, and requires multiple teams working together. Work over the past few years has reduced the time from 17 minutes down to 2–3 minutes. [4]

Weekly highlight
- Communities can now request installation of Automoderator on their wiki. Automoderator is an automated anti-vandalism tool that reverts bad edits based on scores from the new "Revert Risk" machine learning model. You can read details about the necessary steps for installation and configuration. [5]
Updates for editors
- Translators in wikis where the mobile experience of Content Translation is available, can now customize their articles suggestion list from 41 filtering options when using the tool. This topic-based article suggestion feature makes it easy for translators to self-discover relevant articles based on their area of interest and translate them. You can try it with your mobile device. [6]

Updates for technical contributors
- It is now possible for
<syntaxhighlight>
code blocks to offer readers a "Copy" button if thecopy=1
attribute is set on the tag. Thanks to SD0001 for these improvements. [7] - Customized copyright footer messages on all wikis will be updated. The new versions will use wikitext markup instead of requiring editing raw HTML. [8]
- Later this month, temporary accounts will be rolled out on several pilot wikis. The final list of the wikis will be published in the second half of the month. If you maintain any tools, bots, or gadgets on these 11 wikis, and your software is using data about IP addresses or is available for logged-out users, please check if it needs to be updated to work with temporary accounts. Updates for editors
- The Structured Discussion extension (also known as Flow) is starting to be removed. This extension is unmaintained and causes issues. It will be replaced by DiscussionTools, which is used on any regular talk page. A first set of wikis are being contacted. These wikis are invited to stop using Flow, and to move all Flow boards to sub-pages, as archives. At these wikis, a script will move all Flow pages that aren't a sub-page to a sub-page automatically, starting on 22 October 2024. On 28 October 2024, all Flow boards at these wikis will be set in read-only mode. [14][15]
- WMF's Search Platform team is working on making it easier for readers to perform text searches in their language. A change last week on over 30 languages makes it easier to find words with accents and other diacritics. This applies to both full-text search and to types of advanced search such as the hastemplate and incategory keywords. More technical details (including a few other minor search upgrades) are available. [16]
- View all 20 community-submitted tasks that were resolved last week. For example, EditCheck was installed at Russian Wikipedia, and fixes were made for some missing user interface styles.
Updates for technical contributors
- Editors who use the Toolforge tool Earwig's Copyright Violation Detector will now be required to log in with their Wikimedia account before running checks using the "search engine" option. This change is needed to help prevent external bots from misusing the system. Thanks to Chlod for these improvements. [17]
- Phabricator users can create tickets and add comments on existing tickets via Email again. Sending email to Phabricator has been fixed. [18]
- Some HTML elements in the interface are now wrapped with a
<bdi>
element, to make our HTML output more aligned with Web standards. More changes like this will be coming in future weeks. This change might break some tools that rely on the previous HTML structure of the interface. Note that relying on the HTML structure of the interface is not recommended and might break at any time. Weekly highlight
- The Mobile Apps team has released an update to the iOS app's navigation, and it is now available in the latest App store version. The team added a new Profile menu that allows for easy access to editor features like Notifications and Watchlist from the Article view, and brings the "Donate" button into a more accessible place for users who are reading an article. This is the first phase of a larger planned navigation refresh to help the iOS app transition from a primarily reader-focused app, to an app that fully supports reading and editing. The Wikimedia Foundation has added more editing features and support for on-wiki communication based on volunteer requests in recent years.
Updates for editors
- Wikipedia readers can now download a browser extension to experiment with some early ideas on potential features that recommend articles for further reading, automatically summarize articles, and improve search functionality. For more details and to stay updated, check out the Web team's Content Discovery Experiments page and subscribe to their newsletter.
- Later this month, logged-out editors of these 12 wikis will start to have temporary accounts created. The list may slightly change - some wikis may be removed but none will be added. Temporary account is a new type of user account. It enhances the logged-out editors' privacy and makes it easier for community members to communicate with them. If you maintain any tools, bots, or gadgets on these 12 wikis, and your software is using data about IP addresses or is available for logged-out users, please check if it needs to be updated to work with temporary accounts. Guidance on how to update the code is available. Read more about the deployment plan across all wikis.
- View all 33 community-submitted tasks that were resolved last week. For example, the South Ndebele, Pannonian Rusyn, Obolo, Iban and Tai Nüa Wikipedia languages were created last week. [20][21][22][23][24]
- It is now possible to create functions on Wikifunctions using Wikidata lexemes, through the new Wikidata lexeme type launched last week. When you go to one of these functions, the user interface provides a lexeme selector that helps you pick a lexeme from Wikidata that matches the word you type. After hitting run, your selected lexeme is retrieved from Wikidata, transformed into a Wikidata lexeme type, and passed into the selected function. Read more about this in the latest Wikifunctions newsletter.
Updates for technical contributors
- Users of the Wikimedia sites can now format dates more easily in different languages with the new
{{#timef:…}}
parser function. For example,{{#timef:now|date|en}}
will show as "2 December 2024". Previously,{{#time:…}}
could be used to format dates, but this required knowledge of the order of the time and date components and their intervening punctuation.#timef
(or#timefl
for local time) provides access to the standard date formats that MediaWiki uses in its user interface. This may help to simplify some templates on multi-lingual wikis like Commons and Meta. [25][26] - Commons and Meta users can now efficiently retrieve the user's language using
{{USERLANGUAGE}}
instead of using{{int:lang}}
. [27] - The Product and Tech Advisory Council (PTAC) now has its pilot members with representation across Africa, Asia, Europe, North America and South America. They will work to address the Movement Strategy's Technology Council initiative of having a co-defined and more resilient technological platform. [28]
In depth
- The latest quarterly Growth newsletter is available. It includes: an upcoming Newcomer Homepage Community Updates module, new Community Configuration options, and details on new projects.
- The Wikimedia Foundation is now an official partner of the CVE program, which is an international effort to catalog publicly disclosed cybersecurity vulnerabilities. This partnership will allow the Security Team to instantly publish common vulnerabilities and exposures (CVE) records that are affecting MediaWiki core, extensions, and skins, along with any other code the Foundation is a steward of.
- The Community Wishlist is now testing machine translations for Wishlist content. Volunteers can now read machine-translated versions of wishes and dive into discussions even before translators arrive to translate content.

The API will be rerouting some page content endpoints from RESTbase to the newer MediaWiki REST API endpoints. The impacted endpoints include getting page/revision metadata and rendered HTML content. These changes will be available on testwiki later this week, with other projects to follow. This change should not affect existing functionality, but active users of the impacted endpoints should verify behavior on testwiki, and raise any concerns on the related Phabricator ticket.

Updates for editors
- Two new parser functions were added this week. The
{{#interwikilink}}
function adds an interwiki link and the{{#interlanguagelink}}

on English Wikipedia conflict with themos
language code prefix of Mooré Wikipedia. - Starting this week, Wikimedia wikis no longer support connections using old RSA-based HTTPS certificates, specifically rsa-2048. This change is to improve security for all users. Some older, unsupported browser or smartphone devices will be unable to connect; Instead, they will display a connectivity error. See the HTTPS Browser Recommendations page for more-detailed information. All modern operating systems and browsers are always able to reach Wikimedia projects. [46]
- Starting December 16, Flow/Structured Discussions pages will be automatically archived and set to read-only at the following wikis: arwiki, cawiki, frwiki, mediawikiwiki, orwiki, wawiki, wawiktionary, wikidatawiki, zhwiki. Updates for technical contributors
- In late February, temporary accounts will be rolled out on at least 10 large wikis. This deployment will have a significant effect on the community-maintained code. This is about Toolforge tools, bots, gadgets, and user scripts that use IP address data or that are available for logged-out users. The Trust and Safety Product team wants to identify this code, monitor it, and assist in updating it ahead of the deployment to minimize disruption to workflows. The team asks technical editors and volunteer developers to help identify such tools by adding them to this list. In addition, review the updated documentation to learn how to adjust the tools. Join the discussions on the project talk page or in the dedicated thread on the Wikimedia Community Discord server (in English) for support and to share feedback.
