Khirokitia / Choirokotia

Hi

Sorry but I undid your edit to the Cyprus page. The name of the village is still Khirokitia and that is its common name during the period being discussed in the sentence that was edited.

Normal policy is to keep to the most known name and the Khirokitia name is the one most used to reference the town, especially in works on that period of archaeology

Also it is the name of the village on most maps it would seem. eg Maplandia [1] , Encyclopedia britannica [2] and maps.google

Choirokoitia

Hi

I know there is a desire to correct the spellings of places but the problem here is that many text books refer to it as the old spelling, Khirokitia.

Please can you try and rename thus:

[[Khirokitia]] [[Choirokoitia]] (Khirokitia)

My reasoning is twofold. Firstly the main body of people looking in the History articles will be researching from text book etc that have the old name. Secondly the google searches give these results

Choirokoitia - About 27,500 results (0.31 seconds)
Khirokitia - About 41,100 results (0.36 seconds)

and maybe go back and change some of them that you have already changed ?

I have changed it to how it should be. Realistically we would normally go with the most well known English version but in this case I am not going to press the matter (as long as both are there lol)

I realise there is the problem of the Choirokoitia article itself and the many archaeology articles that cover Cyprus history but they should also reflect the more well known English version until Choirokoitia becomes more well used.

Choirokoitia (also known as Khirokitia)

We do not, for example, still call Istanbul "Constantinole" or "Byzantium", but when speaking of it in an article about ancient history of 500 BC we would normally use the name it was called then

"In 500 BC Byzantium (now Istanbul) was the centre of an empire..." or

"In 470 AD Constantinople (now Istanbul) was one of the major trading..."

That means that if talking in the article "Istanbul" about its history -

"Trade flowing to the Black Sea from the Mediterranean through Marmara and the Bosphorus straits in 470 AD meant that Istanbul (then called Constantinople) maintained it's economic..."

My name is Lucas Luca, i am a diplomatic interpreter born and raised in the city, that you write as the capital of both Cyprus and northern Cyprus. My dear, Nicosia is officialy, the capital, of the Republic of Cyprus and not the capital of any northern Cyprus. By adding that, you inform everyone about wrong things.. EU, NATO, THE COUNCIL OF EUROPE, and every other diplomatic organisation around the globe, recognise Nicosia as the capital of one and only one state.. who are you to tell otherwise? who are you to inform wrongly everyone that this city belongs to 2 states? can you STOP adding the turkish name for larnaca and pafos airport. they are on the greek side. and the greeks use it. as you enter the airports it has there name in greek ans english not turkish so stop.

So in theory as you go into the airports they should have it in Turkish as well as greek and english no?. larnaca and pafos airports are on the republic of Cyprus side. or the Greek side. Hi Seric2! On WikiProject Israel we tend to use a specific infobox which covers our needs. There was a discussion in the past where there was no consensus to use the global infobox, which is more complicated and creates certain problems for Israeli localities. Please report sockpuppetry to WP:SSP. This is for English Wikipedia suspected violations only. Whatever he has done on sister projects is blameless here, I fear, though the admins may take it into account. Their problem, of course, is language, not quickly surmounted with all the other problems regarding sockpuppetry. Best to forget suspected violations outside English Wikipedia IMO. Copy and paste moves

Please stop what you are doing. The proper way to move a page is to use the "Move Page" function, not copying from one title and pasting to another. See WP:How to move a page. Doing it the way you are messes up the licensing requirements for attribution to authors. nableezy - 16:00, 30 November 2010 (UTC)

Yes, you are right. If the move is contentious it should go through the process at WP:RM, and you are free to revert a move made without discussion. The issue is how you do it, not if you do it. Ill see if an admin can repair the moves and put the articles back in their original location. Just keep in mind that if you want to move a page it needs to be done through the "Move Page" function and not be copying and pasting content from one title to another. nableezy - 17:26, 30 November 2010 (UTC)

I have seen the edit war but Ercan airport is indeed an unrecognized airport - something the Greek Cypriots will not use for legitimacy reasons.

It does not have Greek name because, first it lies in the unrecognized part of Cyprus under a de facto entity and secondly the Greek Cypriots do not want to legitimze the status airport due to its location in an unrecognized entity.

Again the Republic of Cyprus does not recognize the aiport and the entity it is sitauted in. That is why they never use a Greek name in order not to legitimize it. Do not insist on this.
