WP Athletics in the Signpost[edit]

The WikiProject Report would like to focus on WikiProject Athletics for a Signpost article scheduled to coincide with this summer's European Athletics Championships. The article about WikiProject Athletics would serve as the beginning of a special "Summer Sports Series", giving you an excellent opportunity to draw attention to the project's efforts and attract new members. Would you be willing to participate in an interview? If so, here are the questions for the interview. Just add your response below each question and feel free to skip any questions that you don't feel comfortable answering. Multiple editors will have an opportunity to respond to the interview questions, so be sure to sign your answers. If you know anyone else who would like to participate in the interview, please share this with them. Have a great day. -Mabeenot (talk) 04:10, 6 June 2012 (UTC)

Disambiguation link notification for April 26[edit]

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited MSP Solai Nadar Memorial Higher Secondary school, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Handball (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Soviet Union[edit]

This edit of Ryulong[1] and related edit comment is really misguided. The discussion on the talk page had resolved the issue. The fact that Ryulong reverted my edit without even leaving a note on the talk page but instead requesting protection is most improper, nor do I understand why the seconded Ryulong's request for full protection.

User:Incnis Mrsi reported the problem of IP disruption at this thread. I subsequently report the issue here and the page was semi-protected. I then reverted this disruptive IP. The book State Succession to International Responsibility by Patrick Dumberry published in 2007 summarises the current mainstream view on page 151:

"The question whether the break-up of the U.S.S.R. should be regarded as a case of State dissolution or rather a series of secessions is also controversial. The only non-controversial point is that the three Baltic States are regarded not as new States (and not as successor States of the U.S.S.R.) but as identical to the three Baltic States that existed before their 1940 illegal annexation by the U.S.S.R."

I think with that definitive summary we can conclude that the mainstream view is that the Baltic states were not successor states, since the author clearly states there is no controversy in that view, i.e. it is not contested in scholarly literature. Therefore, the Baltic states, which left the Soviet Union three months before it was dissolved, is improperly included as successor states in the inbox. Note that only four republics are listed as predecessors and 12 should be listed as successors, as any RS will show. --Nug (talk) 11:04, 29 April 2013 (UTC)

If all reliable sources do indeed support you, it should be easy for you to establish a talk page consensus; as of now, though, despite your claims the issue clearly hasn't been resolved. As for fully protecting the page, if there's an edit war under way involving both IPs and non-IPs then full protection is much more appropriate than semi-protection. Per WP:SEMI, semi-protection is only an appropriate reaction to edit warring "where all parties involved are unregistered or new editors", which clearly isn't the case here. And no, edit warring is not vandalism. Sideways713 (talk) 11:35, 29 April 2013 (UTC)
Indeed the discussion has been dormant for nearly two weeks, indicating that no one has been able to refute the sources presented, the disruptive IP was not contributing to the discussion, User:Incnis Mrsi who initially opposed the edit in discussions finally implicitly agreed when he also reverted the IP, thereby showing that consensus has been achieved. The only other opposing editor User:GoodDay was site banned for disruptive behaviour in East European topics, and I wouldn't be surprised if this IP was him. --Nug (talk) 11:42, 29 April 2013 (UTC)

Template:IAAF simple[edit]

Hi Sideways. Does Template:IAAF simple have the same result as Template:IAAF name? If so, we should probably update the name template with the simple code and redirect the now redundant Template:IAAF profile into that too. SFB 12:02, 15 September 2013 (UTC)

I'm not entirely sure what you mean or intend, but at this point I see no advantage to tampering with any of the templates.
IAAF simple and IAAF name are interchangeable to a limited extent: a working link should be produced by the same parameters whichever template is used, but it won't be the same link. Furthermore, IAAF name has a parameter called "name" whereas IAAF simple has one called "text" for the same purpose - confusing the two shouldn't do much damage either way since both templates automatically remove disambiguation from pagenames, but it surely wouldn't do any good.
IAAF profile takes entirely different parameters, and redirecting it to either of the other two would break eighty-odd profile links. Sideways713 (talk) 13:26, 15 September 2013 (UTC)

Snake mackerel[edit]

I wondered why you changed my edit I was literally about to put a refrence?

Ben Benjahdrum (talk) 22:46, 27 July 2015 (UTC)

@Benjahdrum: According to the article itself, the snake mackerel had acquired at least 6 scientific names by 1860 and was used as a food in Hawaii in the time of Kamehameha I, who died in 1819; accordingly, I felt it was very unlikely the information about it being first seen by Thor Heyerdahl in 1947 was accurate.
A bit of Googling showed me some sources were making the more limited claim that Heyerdahl was the first to see a living snake mackerel; whether that is true, I don't know either, since it seems very unlikely it would be used as food and never seen alive. The source used for the Hawaii claim is available on Google Books, and I verified it does support the claim made; it might not be accurate, I don't know. Sideways713 (talk) 22:56, 27 July 2015 (UTC)

MOS:IDENTITY is being revisited: How should Wikipedia refer to transgender individuals before and after their transition?[edit]

You are being contacted because you contributed to a recent discussion of MOS:IDENTITY that closed with the recommendation that Wikipedia's policy on transgender individuals be revisited.

Two threads have been opened at the Village Pump:Policy. The first addresses how the Manual of Style should instruct editors to refer to transgender people in articles about themselves (which name, which pronoun, etc.). The second addresses how to instruct editors to refer to transgender people when they are mentioned in passing in other articles. Your participation is welcome. Speedy deletion nomination of Ben Hedges[edit]

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia. This is a notice to inform you that a tag has been placed on Ben Hedges requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A3 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is an article with no content whatsoever, or whose contents consist only of external links, a "See also" section, book references, category tags, template tags, interwiki links, images, a rephrasing of the title, a question that should have been asked at the help or reference desks, or an attempt to contact the subject of the article. Please see Wikipedia:Stub for our minimum information standards for short articles. Also please note that articles must be on notable subjects and should provide references to reliable sources that verify their content.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator, or if you have already done so, you can place a request here. Olympic Trials[edit]

Thanks for all your hard work on the footers of Olympic Trials. I wanted you to know I'm about half way to building the article on the 1968 US Olympic Trials and will be moving backward in time from there, so you don't need to duplicate my work. But this is the lead up to the Olympics, so I've got bigger fish to fry right now. Trackinfo (talk) 20:35, 17 July 2016 (UTC)

@Trackinfo: Thanks for the heads-up! When/if I get back to working on the Trials I'll probably do 1924 and 1920 next; for now, I plan to do all US team footers back to 1920 (I'm not sure if it makes any sense to have footers for pre-1920 teams, given how different the system and the role of national teams was in the early Olympics). Sideways713 (talk) 21:08, 17 July 2016 (UTC)
While there are sources, I'm not nearly as well versed on the 1920's, please have at it. I've built Olympic Trials (results) articles from 2000 backwards to 1972 and I did 1948, so my goal is to fill in the gap. Even to 1948 includes people I've met and have even competed with, so it is much more familiar territory. Trackinfo (talk) 21:57, 17 July 2016 (UTC)

Invitation to the African Destubathon[edit]

Hi. You may be interested in participating in the African Destubathon which starts on October 15. Africa currently has over 37,000 stubs and badly needs a quality improvement editathon/contest to flesh out basic stubs. There are proposed substantial prizes to give to editors who do the most articles, and planned smaller prizes for doing to most destubs for each of the 53 African countries, so should be enjoyable! So it would be a good chance to win something for improving stubs on African sportspeople, including footballers, athletes, Olympians and Paralympians etc, particularly female ones, but also male. Even if contests aren't your thing we would be grateful if you could consider destubbing a few African articles during the drive to help the cause and help reduce the massive 37,000 + stub count, of which many are rated high importance (think Regions of countries etc). If you're interested in competing or just loosely contributing a few expanded articles on African Paralympians, Olympians and committees etc, please add your name to the Contestants/participants section. Diversity of work from a lot of people will make this that bit more special. Thanks. --MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 21:14, 6 October 2016 (UTC)

Didn't notice that, but no diacritics policy was always used for every single person on North American ice hockey article. I suppose other teams' staff was excluded for some reason or it just was a silly mistake. – Sabbatino (talk) 16:28, 6 January 2017 (UTC)
It was just worded that way cause the fights usually resulted from player names. But yes we intended it for any person name. Its really just meant to stop edit wars. Really the best course of action for most people is just leave as you find. But a few people on either side of the debate always end up edit warring so we had to make the guidance to stop the fights. -DJSasso (talk) 16:48, 6 January 2017 (UTC)
We now delete or hide diacritics on NHL franchise articles. Such compromise was required to help end the Diacritics Wars of yesteryear :) GoodDay (talk) 07:10, 8 January 2017 (UTC)
