Hi[edit]

Good development on the Rock article - referenced (I fixed them a little bit) which is VERY good for a new editor. Keep up the good work!. DuncanHill 14:42, 17 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Messages[edit]

You'll get the hang of it, and don't be afraid to ask for help! By the way, when you leave a message on a talk page, it's best to add the message at the bottom of the page, you can do this by clicking the "+" symbol at the top of the page. Also, don't forget to "sign" using ~~~~ (if you are on a British keyboard, it's usually on the "#" key, next to "return". This adds your username and the time & date of your comment, which helps people keep track of conversations. DuncanHill 14:49, 17 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

A ha indeed[edit]

You've got it! If it's ok with you, I'll keep an eye on your contributions for a little while, and "tidy up" any little slips you might make - then you can look at what I've changed to see how it works. Also, you might be interested in joining the Cornwall Wikiproject, which is for all editors working to improve Wikipedia's coverage of Cornwall. We could do with some new blood! References[edit]

The reference should go between <ref> reference here </ref> I think you're missing the "/" out of the second tag! Also, you don't need to put http references within [square brackets]. DuncanHill 15:12, 17 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

This diff [1] should show you what I did, the changes are highlighted in red. DuncanHill 15:14, 17 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

This account with this username has been blocked indefinitely because Usernames that match the name of a well-known living or recently deceased person, unless you verifiably are that person, in which case please note this on your user page. Wikipedians with articles is a list of such users. (see our blocking and username policies for more information).

You are encouraged to create a new account and contribute to Wikipedia under an appropriate username. Our username policy provides guidance on selecting your username.

Alternately, you may request a change in username if you want to keep the contributions from this account. To do so, please follow these directions:

  1. Add {{unblock-un|your new username here}} below. This is possible because even when you are blocked, you can still edit your own talk page.
  2. At an administrator's discretion, you may be unblocked.
  3. You will have 24 hours after the unblock to file a request before you may be re-blocked. Please note, you may only request a name that is not already in use; do not create the new account then request a name change. For more information, please visit Wikipedia:Changing username.

In many cases (especially if your account has few or no edits), it is much easier to create a new account. You may also edit Wikipedia without creating an account. Due to Wikipedia's mechanism for enforcing name changes, your IP address may be temporarily blocked. Unless you have also been engaging in vandalism or impersonation of another user, we will remove that block as soon as possible.

If you believe this block is unjustified, you may contest the block by adding the text {{unblock|your reason here}} below or emailing the administrator who blocked you.

Oh for Gawd's sake....[edit]

Dear Irish Guy, Do you really believe that your action was the most appropriate way to proceed? Have I done anything that in any way consitutes vandalism? Or that in any way negatively impacts on the Wikipedia project? Have I not in just immeasurably improved on more than several articles, plus created new ones on well-sourced and deserving subjects?

Could at least have the common courtesy to explain what is going on?

Your request to be unblocked has been granted for the following reason(s):

Allowing username change to Sittingduck (talk · contribs). Please put this request in at Wikipedia:Changing username/Usurpations as soon as possible to avoid re-blocking. Since the account "Sittingduck" already exists but has made no edits, you should make a request at the previous link (WP:USURP). You should be renamed by a bureacrat after a week. Feel free to ask me any questions.

Request handled by:Malcolm (talk) 00:32, 18 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I suggest you use a different username than "Sittingduck", however, as it's taken and requires a longer process than WP:CHU. How about "Sitting duck"? — Malcolm (talk) 00:45, 18 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Carmenelectra → Sittingduck[edit]

Oh god![edit]

I have left a message on the talk page of Irishguy suggesting that this could have been dealt with in a less confrontational way. Hopefully someone will see sense! DuncanHill 23:32, 17 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks Duncan[edit]

...and my Wikipedia editing was shaping up so nicely as a new-waste-of-time-diverting-distraction-while-really-I-ought-to-be-getting-on-with-other-stuff.....it is - or perhaps I should say, was - rather wonderfully therapeutic that way...

Irish Guy[edit]

I am finding this very frustrating.

I can't comment on your User's page (because you've blocked me) so I've no idea if you'll read this and I'm just rather saddened by your response. I've followed the User Name Change guidelines to the best of my abilities but nothing has happened. The choice of my original name certainly wasn't malicious or even pointed, it was a tip-of-the-tongue thing, I didn't even know who she was until you blocked me and I Googled her!

What I find most depressing about this episode, is that I find the Wikipedia project rather romantically idealistic. I heard Jimmy Wales talk on it back in 2005 and was overwhelming impressed and yet, here I am, in an idle moment, giving it a go, actually getting a bit carried away with it, and then bang, Irish Guy intervenes.

Possibly, if you know your way around Wikipedia this happens all the time, but I think you need to re-consider your attitude and policy towards non-expert Wikipedians and newcomers. I quote Sir Jimmy, it's supposed to belong to us all. Carmenelectra 00:08, 18 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Irish Guy #2[edit]

PS I've now read the User Name guidelines and you're in clear breach of them.

It quite clearly states that the appropriate response, in the first instance, is to communicate with the user and suggest a change. More extreme action is only justified, it says, in cases in which the user name is offensive or promotional. And mine was evidently neither.

Carmenelectra 00:18, 18 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

There are instructions for that process at WP:CHANGE. I am suprised that an admin blocked you for that without suggesting you change it first (although I am honestly not suprised that it was Irish Guy that blocked you). Hope that link helps. - Rjd0060 00:37, 18 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Hmmm. I read that you already tried that. Do you have your email setup? If you do, go ahead and send me an email and I can try and help you. - Rjd0060 00:39, 18 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Hey, sorry to hear about this blocking and such. The bureaucrats should get to your request soon, you are a great new contributor, please don't leave. If you need anything, please contact me on my talk page after you're unblocked, or post here and I'll find it. Best wishes! Love, Neranei (talk) 00:40, 18 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Glad you are unblocked. - Rjd0060 00:41, 18 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hello y'all![edit]

Thanks for your messages. How did you even know my little drama was going on? I have so much to learn. Anyhow, I have requested, as per Malcolm's suggestion, to become sitting duck.....hope this meets approval. With my luck it's probably the name of a little-known Californian early 70s porn star and I'll be instantly banned again...

Still, thanks everybody. Best, Miss S Duck.

Actually, you should probably make a request at WP:CHU instead for the name "Sitting duck"...sorry, my fault for not telling you that when I granted the request. I'm going to remove it from the USURP page, and you can put it on CHU. Again, sorry about this. — Malcolm (talk) 00:56, 18 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Hope the name change works! How did we know? Well, this page is on my watchlist (your watchlist is linked at the top of any screen), and when I saw what had happenned I went about asking for help, and a couple of decent folk responded. DuncanHill 00:58, 18 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Well, thanks again...[edit]

...I'm still slightly confused about what my name is, or should be, or might be becoming, but I'm assuming this will clarify in the fullness of time....

Anyhow, it has certainly proved to be an interesting introduction to Wikipedia. It looks so placid on the surface, and underneath it's war.....

OK, you're renamed. :) Sorry for the confusion yet again... — Malcolm (talk) 01:23, 18 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hello ducky![edit]

Sorry, couldn't resist that! Let's hope things go a little more smoothly for you now. DuncanHill 01:24, 18 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hello! Hope your rename is satisfactory, please ask me if you have any questions! We're really glad you're here. Love, Neranei (talk) 01:27, 18 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Hello. Welcome to Wikipedia, and congratulations on being just about the most popular new editor I can recall. :) If you have any questions or need any help, you can contact me on my talk page, check Wikipedia:Questions, or leave {{helpme}} and your question on this page, and someone will be around to help shortly. Again, welcome, and happy editing! WODUP 01:50, 18 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Ducky, Duckface....[edit]

..whatever! Glad to be back. It is strangely addictive, is it not? This editing lark? What I can't believe is just how many people (and places) aren't on here, who, and which, you'd think would be....it's such a strangely partial snapshot of the world around us...

It is, that's why I'm here! There's something about contributing to something so influential that makes it really attractive. Neranei (talk) 02:18, 18 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
