An article you recently created, Norwegian Basketball Association, does not have enough sources and citations as written to remain published. It needs more citations from reliable, independent sources. (?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. Basketball

[edit]

Hey, why did you revert the "bk-rt/bk" thing. I made it the same as it is in the basketballbox where the flags are right and left and not left and right. Same for adding "none" to won medals, if there is something to add it will be, none is redundant. The headers were made so all coaches/past players and rosters are under the overall header "Team" plus adding an empty header with "Notes" is not needed when there are no notes. And not sure why you did not make the revert right away so i get a notice and did it manual. Kante4 (talk) 17:29, 9 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

This section is displayed identical to the one on the Germany men's football page and Germany women's football page. I found it strange when you switched the display, after I filled in those sections which were blank for years. As for the Notes I readded them because they were previously in use, and could be for future use. They can be removed, I have no issues with it. Also, I wasn't intentionally reverting you, there is no ill-will here mate. SpinnDoctor (talk) 17:57, 9 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Also, the medals area, I come across users putting "None" in the medals category, It really doesn't bother me. Plus, a user may want to know if a medal was won or not. So that's more of opinion to say something is redundant. But like I said it's not an issue to me. SpinnDoctor (talk) 18:05, 9 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I just felt like matching the basketballbox where the flags are different than the one in the box. None in medals for me is not needed but not sure what others think. Kante4 (talk) 14:02, 10 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
The section is similar to the football pages, I'm sure you're familiar with that. I've never seen this done on the football pages, I don't the issue here. With the "None" in the medals category, too many times over the years I have seen users come along and place it there, so I've given up placed it there for them to save them the work. SpinnDoctor (talk) 14:25, 10 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Never looked at that part of a football article, tbh. Maybe i ask the Footy project why it is listed that way and not like in the result boxes. Kante4 (talk) 16:34, 10 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, and i linked the official website with wikidata, so just {{Official website}} is correct, same for commons category. Please check next time the links before undoing it or ask if you have questions about that. Kante4 (talk) 07:41, 11 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
No problem mate, I'll do that! SpinnDoctor (talk) 14:36, 11 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

National Football Teams: World Cup Tables

[edit]

Hi - I see you reverted the changes I made to several tables for the number of World Cups. My goal in making the changes was to standardize this count across all national teams. I started when I noticed that most were showing as X/25 or X/26 (which seems clearly wrong to me - we shouldn't be counting WCs for which qualification hasn't started yet), with most of the rest showing X/22. That included many teams that haven't existed for all WCs, like the former Yugolsav republics and nations that didn't become independent until relatively recently like South Sudan. In the process I did find some like the former Soviet states that were counting only the WCs they've been eligible for, but the vast majority were counting all WCs, so that was the standard I went with.

I can see the case for only counting WCs that a team was eligible for, but in the interest of consistency across all teams, I think simply counting all WCs is the best approach. When I first started updating this count, I actually did try only counting eligible WCs, but I found it wasn't always clear which WCs should or should not be included in the count for a given team, and there was a risk of violating WP:OR. If you still think we should only count some WCs for teams that could not have participated in all of them, do you have any thoughts about which to include/exclude? I think WCs for which a team was not a FIFA member would obviously not be counted, but what if the team was suspended/banned, or withdrew, or simply did not enter? Wburrow (talk) 18:26, 8 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the response! With former Soviet republics, listing x/22 for any of them besides Russia would be inaccurate. With Russia owning all of the stats of the former Soviet Union, it makes sense for it to be listed as x/22, since the Soviet Union became FIFA members in 1912, compared to a country like Belarus who has only been a FIFA member since 1992. Also, take several countries in the Caribbean and Middle East, who have been colonised at some point, or were just were not FIFA members during the early cycles for the WC. It only makes sense to start listing WC cycles after a country becomes a FIFA member. Take Honduras for example, they became members in 1951. So it would be impossible for them to have been able to participate in the three WC cycles in the 1930s as well as the one in 1950. So a country like that should be listed as x/18, and so on
On the suspended/banned topic, I think once a country is a FIFA member, the clock starts running. As in, if, a country fails to participate in any WC cycle regardless of their circumstance, it counts toward them failing to qualify. For example, Russia could be ineligible to compete in the next WC cycle, it doesn't mean we just stop the clock at the 2022 WC, and keep it at x/22. Each cycle that passes, continues to be counted. SpinnDoctor (talk) 22:57, 8 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your thoughts - that all makes sense to me. Part of my hesitation for only counting eligible WCs was teams that joined FIFA around the same time qualifying for a WC began. Bangladesh, for example, joined FIFA in 1976, the same year qualifying for the 1978 WC began - so do we count 1978 in Bangladesh's total? I'd say "yes," but I could see the argument for "no," since I can't find any source that shows definitively if they were eligible to enter qualifying and chose not to or if they were simply not eligible yet. Counting all WCs has the benefit of being simpler and not needing to make any judgment calls like that. But that consideration will only apply to a few teams, and in general I agree that only counting eligible WCs is more accurate. So I'll begin the process of correcting the counts on the various national team pages. I just want to make sure we're avoiding situations where a team like South Sudan is showing 0/22, but Iceland is showing 1/18, since that's obviously inconsistent. Wburrow (talk) 00:44, 9 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I noticed with your new rounds of edits to some WC tables, you've removed the width on many pages, not factoring into account users with wide monitors, which creates a lot of empty space in the right hand column and shrinks the text in the table. That actually fits it in better to the screen, and easier to see. The manual of style page apparently doesn't take that into account obviously. SpinnDoctor (talk) 01:55, 19 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
As you said, the MOS doesn't include the width parameter, so I feel justified in removing it from existing tables. I have a wide monitor myself, and the compact version of the table is actually easier for me to read than the stretched-out version, the text is the same size (just confirmed this with a side-by-side comparison of the tables with and without the parameter), and the extra white space to the right doesn't bother me (that happens with lots of tables). That said, I can respect that others may have a different opinion on the matter, and I have no desire to be the MOS police, so if some users prefer the wide look and put the parameter back, I won't object or remove it again.
