wikiquote:British Columbia

Sri, I appreciate the work you have been doing, but there is still a lot of concern (not just from me) about the British Columbia page. The main concern is that most of the quotes on the page seem to have nothing to do with British Columbia, or to not be particularly about British Columbia. Are you under the impression that any notable quote by a notable British Columbian belongs on this page? If so, that's not the way things work at Wikiquote. I understand that you have a portal that you would like to maintain, and are trying to put the quotations in Wikiquote, which is fine and good, but the way to do it would be to set up separate pages from separate topics, and then cross-reference them from your portal. For instance, you could certainly have a page on Emily Carr, who is notable and whose quotes are notable. You could probably have a page about British Columbia too, but you would need to keep to topic on it (that is, only notable quotes clearly about British Columbia.

Going through the quotes on the page, here are my comments:

  • Cedars are terribly sensitive...
    • Appears to be about cedars, which grow everywhere
  • Come to the edge of the barn...
    • Not apparently about BC.
  • Downstream ever further...
    • If I had to guess, I'd say this is about salmon. I can see where it might be about BC, but I'd need some context.
  • It is wonderful to feel the grandness of Canada...
    • Seems to be about Canada. Yes, I know she lived in BC, but if she meant BC why did she say Canada? Much of what she says is true about other parts of Canada.
  • Life's an awfully lonesome affair.
    • This is about life. I don't see the connection to BC
  • Most of the Games..
    • First, this is about the games, not about BC (even though the games will be there). Second, it's not a very interesting quote from a quotability standpoint -- it's just marketing propaganda.
  • owls in the beardusky woods
    • About owls? We have them too.
  • Stand with Baillie-Grohman in 1882...
    • I don't know where most of those places are, but I'm prepared to believe this one is about BC.
  • The flavour is its own reward...
    • Have no idea why this is about BC.
  • There is something bigger than fact...
    • Again, if she's talking about BC we need some context.
  • You always feel when you look it straight...
    • Isn't this about art?
  • The coast of British Columbia was one of the three chief centers of aboriginal America.
    • About BC, but of no interest as a quote. It's just a fact.

If some of these (other than the one i mention) are really about BC, you need to explain why. The standard wikiquote format, which you haven't used, would be useful here. Here's an example:

  • The hush of the forest in the still of the mountains.
    • explaining what he finds unique about British Columbia
    • John Doe, My Life, Erehwon Publishers, 2007

But the source had better bear out the fact that the person really is talking about some experience or quality unique to BC, not just an impression he happened to have just because he happened to be in BC or because he was born there. Do you understand what I mean? --ubiquity (talk) 15:53, 15 January 2008 (UTC)

In Ayyavazhi article

Thanks for the good works. And the citations, 108 and 109 were moved to another URL and now I've placed the current URL to the article. And the page cited in 'citation 75' was missing and I don't find it through search engines. So I removed it from the article. Please refer to the article and it's talk page. Once again thanks very much for your good suggestions and works. - PAUL RAJ 20:27, 18 January 2008 (UTC)

Sask Quotes

Hi SriMesh, how are you? It was nice to hear from you. I checked out the Saskatchewan page. Looks good. I have started a discussion on its Talk page. Talk to you soon! Moisejp (talk) 02:30, 20 January 2008 (UTC)

Hi SriMesh, how are you doing? All is well here. I just wanted to make sure I got the Sask stuff I sent you a few weeks or so ago. That was my first time to e-mail anything through Wikipedia, so just wanted to make sure. Have a good day! Moisejp (talk) 08:02, 1 March 2008 (UTC)
Hi SriMesh. How's it going? I'm well. Wow, you sure added lots to Saskatchewan! I have the DVD for The Muppet Movie, so I will find the exact quote Kermit uses in "Movin' Right Along" about Saskatchewan. Also, when I was doing research for the old SIPC page, I came across this webpage: http://www.saskatoonlibrary.ca/html/LHistorysong.html but it was right before the SIPC article was going to be deleted so I didn't have a chance to check out many of the quotes. I will try to check a few of them out in the next few days. Bye for now! Moisejp (talk) 01:56, 5 March 2008 (UTC)
Added the Muppets quote, fixed up some punctuation, and left a note on the discussion page. Check it out! Moisejp (talk) 23:52, 6 March 2008 (UTC)

Ayyavazhi GAC Reassessed

User:SriMesh, User:Ncmvocalist had reassesed the Ayyavazhi article and had still clamed that the article lacks Good prose, MOS guidelines, Fair Use rationales, the article is not in focus, ect. He had also made suggestions. Can you please help in maintaining it.

Leave the reference section, i will prove its relaiability and hence the article's NPOV. But I need help in the above issues. Thanks - PAUL RAJ 09:02, 5 February 2008 (UTC)

Thanks very much for you help. I kindly request you that keep an eye on the MOS of the article, since I can't do anything better than you, Thanks. - PAUL RAJ 07:35, 6 February 2008 (UTC)

Re: Ayyavazhi

I'm sure there are other articles that have managed to find a way of 'getting around' issues like the one that you have mentioned. However, if it is indeed impossible to make the prose both well written, and clear throughout the article (even with respect to these names), then the article is destined to staying at a B grade as it does not come up to the required standard of other articles that are at a higher grade.

So, instead of making a separate sentence for explaining that the name has changed, incorporate it into the previous sentence in which the name was used. So in effect, you should be tightening the expression of the article so that every sentence is focused on the heading under which you've written it, rather than having indirectly relevent sentences floating around. Eg; Instead of having "Ayyavazhi began to be noticed initially by the large number of people gathering to worship Vaikundar (birth name 'Mudisoodum Perumal' )[28] (1809 C.E – 1851 C.E)[29] at Poovandanthoppe. Poovandanthoppe is the name of a village now called Swamithoppe. The Thuvayal thavasu..." -> try "Ayyavazhi began to be noticed initially by the large number of people gathering at the village, Poovandanthoppe to worship Vaikundar...." So a reader can click on Poovandanthoppe and after being redirected to the Swamithoppe article, the first sentence states that Swamithoppe was previously known as Poovandanthoppe. Similarly, the fact that there is no article on Vaikundar is another major concern. Anyway, good luck! Ncmvocalist (talk) 04:02, 6 February 2008 (UTC)

Saskatchewan, etc.

Hi SriMesh. How are you doing? Sorry I haven't been too helpful lately. I have been quite busy and haven't put in a lot of Wikipedia time in recently. Actually, I have another project (i.e. article) or two that I hope to work on before I would be able to find time to get back to the Saskatchewan quotes stuff. Did you end up finding the file you saved from the old SiPC article? If you are eager to do more work on the Sask quotes and want me to send you what I saved from the old SiPC article I could. But I don't want it to seem like I'm dumping extra work on you when I said that I was going to help you. I know you would probably appreciate someone else to jump in there and help you along. But I will try to get back to the quotes thing sooner or later. Bye for now, and take care! Moisejp (talk) 02:51, 9 February 2008 (UTC)

I left some discussion on this on WP:SKCN talk page. It needs a lot of work as far as references go. I have added some, but it needs a lot more to be considered for good article status in the least. I know you will do what you can. Mr. C.C. (talk) 02:51, 16 March 2008 (UTC)

St. Lina Aerodrome

Well it appears that St. Lina is in Alberta, so it looks like an error. However, I'm at home right now and don't have access to the manual. I'll double check it later when I get to work. By the way the next one I created right after that was Estevan (Blue Sky) Aerodrome so St. Lina is probably not near Estevan. THanks for seeing it. I completely agree in the case of Holy Trinity — although the idea that high schools are encyclopedically notable still personally makes me itch, the article does contain independent references and the education project does generally regard high schools as notable. Hello Srimesh. Good Morning (in Philippine time). Thanks for the prompt reply. For the non-free images, I was really thinking yesterday that the idea of posting them in the portal is against the policy. Most portals and even the main page do not post non-free images. When a song-related article is featured, they do not use the single's cover; instead, they use available free image used in the article—of course, nice images. I'm really interesting to be part of the project Wikipedia:WikiProject R&B and Soul Music, and I believe the portal is part of it. However, the project is dying, almost. You can count on me for further improvements. --Efe (talk) 00:28, 27 March 2008 (UTC)

Re: SK 16/SK 58

No problem. Just the thing is, GAs don't usually pass w/o pictures. And that 16 has the best chance of passing compared to the other two. Mitch32contribs 22:44, 27 March 2008 (UTC)

I gave it a lookover, as did several others. I'm on the edge of failing it because its screwed up with MoS. If you want some opinions, the #wikipedia-en-roads IRC channel is where I am as well. SK 16 is a big mess, no history should be in the route description, etc. Please, if you want help, ask in the IRC channel.Mitch32contribs 23:36, 28 March 2008 (UTC)
The article still has problems. 1) MoS and puncutation issues throughout, 2) infobox needs to be expaned, 3) no need for the RM box, 4) split apart the images (they're too bunched up), 5) Jct list should only be kilometres. This is from others. Mitch32contribs 22:10, 30 March 2008 (UTC)
How about the words "Look now" - -I just fixed half your problems. :) Mitch32contribs 22:45, 30 March 2008 (UTC)
Being a little nitpicky but: 6) Use either SK or Hwy throughout the article, 7) What is twinning? 8) Section 2.6 needs cleanup, 9) Ghost town section needs a notability mention, or it should be removed, 10) Section 2.5 - How can a highway be "graveled"? - These need fixing.Mitch32contribs 23:49, 30 March 2008 (UTC)

Saskatchewan Highway 16

I am trying to tweak this article to make it a GA it is on hold. I have placename sizes via the latests census, but always re-stating that the date of the population was 2006 and the cite source is making a hard to read prosy article is there a better way of citing the facts to not get a fact tag, but still say the size of the village or hamlet? Thank you.SriMesh | talk 19:42, 30 March 2008 (UTC)

I'm sorry, I don't quite understand. Could you rephrase your question? Thanks. Microchip 08 20:44, 30 March 2008 (UTC)
You can use <cite name="foo"/> if the item named 'foo' was already used before your use of it. So you can do something like <cite name="foo"> blah</cite> and later on in the article do <cite name="foo"/> and basically reuse the prior citation.. PS I'm going to remove the helpme tag, re-add it when and if you need clarification. —— nixeagle 20:55, 30 March 2008 (UTC)
Hey! ok, that is basic wikimarkup... I'm not sure if there is a way round that. However you do have a few options here. First you can continue as you are doing now, putting that tag after each number. Or you can place the tag after each paragraph, and simply place a {{citationneeded}} tag after those that you don't have a citation for. —— nixeagle 21:28, 30 March 2008 (UTC)

Saskatchewan highway shields

Hey. I fixed the Saskatchewan shield template in {{Infobox road}} to use a variation of Pomte's shield template on all articles. You can see it in action on Saskatchewan Highway 58. I'm also in the process of developing a Saskatchewan junction template (that, with some tricky code, could probably be expanded for any Canadian province) that will simplify the amount of code required to generate a junction table. Re: Saskatchewan Highway 1

No problem; I'll get to it in the morning. An en-dash is the first dash next to "Insert:" at the bottom of the editing page. It refers to a dash that has the width of a standard "n". Another way to insert an en-dash is to write out &ndashplus-a-semicolon. —Rob (talk) 04:03, 15 April 2008 (UTC)

Twillingate, Newfoundland and Labrador

Hi,

You said that the article Twillingate, Newfoundland and Labrador needed improvements before being passed for the good article nominations, though I can't find in the talk page the improvements you requested. I'm one of the main contributors to the article and I'd appreciate if you provided the information as to what you would like to see improved. Thank you. NeonFire (talk) 20:30, 3 May 2008 (UTC)

I've responded and fixed most of the things you mentioned during the review, though there were a few things I found unclear. Could you provide an update as to what else (more specifically) should be improved before pass/fail? Thanks! NeonFire (talk) 11:44, 4 May 2008 (UTC)

Twillingate, Newfoundland and Labrador

You passed this article yesterday. Unfortunately, I have found several issues with the GA criteria that need to be addressed, so I think your passing it was a little premature. The article will be delisted from WP:GA in one week unless the issues are resolved.

Also, when passing GAs, please do not start a new main section for 'successful good article nomination'. Please keep the article pass in the same main section as the review. This will make things much easier when reviews are archived at a later point. Dr. Cash (talk) 22:24, 6 May 2008 (UTC)

As an additional note, one thing that might help out, especially in the area of 'completeness/broadness' with city articles is to become somewhat familiar with the city article guidelines at WP:USCITY and WP:UKCITIES. If the article is missing a several main sections from those guidelines, it fails the completeness criterion. Also, keep an eye out for sections with very little content (2-4 sentences), which indicates some completeness issues. Even a major section like history should have more than two paragraphs. The history section should tell the story of the development of the city, from ancient times (if the city's that old) to modern day. One thing I am seeing with a lot of recent articles is that they do a good job with history, but really skimp on recent history, cutting off largely around world war II, which leaves off about sixty years or so. Dr. Cash (talk) 01:55, 7 May 2008 (UTC)

Saskatoon John G. Diefenbaker International Airport

Thanks. I added an image to the box and put some in a gallery. I also went to Transport Canada and using the first box (Mark) I was able to identify some of the aircraft and updated the Commons pictures. Just use the last four letters off the aircraft and it will tell you what they are and the owner. Cheers. CambridgeBayWeather Have a gorilla 07:43, 10 May 2008 (UTC)

Just some of your images:
  • Saskatoon 084 is a 1966 Piper PA-28-160 Cherokee
  • Saskatoon 085 is a 1976 Piper PA-28R-200 Cherokee Arrow
  • Saskatoon 086, 087, 088, 089 and 092 are all Fokker F-28-1000s of Canadian Regional Airlines.

You wrote: "Re Mather Byles DesBrisay, one of the external links was changed to a reference citation using the wiki style of referencing...[[Wikipedia:Citation templates]. Could more be added to the article to support Wikipedia:Notability."

On the contrary, you did the opposite and changed a reference citation to an external link. Nonetheless, it seems rather odd to change the single most important and reliable reference source that far exceeds Wikipedia:Notability requirements to an external link then turn around and say: "Could more be added to the article to support Wikipedia:Notability". Being new, I prefer to yield to others more experienced but frankly, neither your message to me nor your edit, makes any sense. Please elucidate. Thank you. Jonathan Logan (talk)

Public Transit in Saskatchewan

Thank you for your invitation to join the Saskatchewan Project, because I created the Prince Albert Transit article, but unfortunately I really don't know much about the province. My task is a sort of "if you build it they will come" project, to create an entry for every public transit system in Canada. Because the quality and quantity of information available on the internet varies I have to rely on locals to contribute supplementary input that may not be available online and to take photographs of buses and terminals that I cannot supply. Perhaps you can help me contact a 'Saskapedian' (do you like this word?) who would be willing to upload photographs relating to the Category:Transit agencies in Saskatchewan and also the Saskatchewan Transportation Company. Thank you. -Secondarywaltz (talk) 00:06, 18 June 2008 (UTC)

Thank you for the pictures. I have used three edited versions in the Saskatoon Transit article. What I have to do with many of my own photographs is trim off the asphalt in the foreground, otherwise objects can seem to float. For the downtown terminal I simply removed that excess and changed it into a 16x9 widescreen format, which I find to be pleasant dimensions (like HDTV). The other two pics focus on buses in different paint schemes; the current one for the infobox and the old one in 'Fleet'. Julia, cooperation like this is what makes Wikipedia enjoyable. Thanks again. -Secondarywaltz (talk) 16:17, 26 June 2008 (UTC)

a couple of subjects :)

  1. Your edit here may have been misplaced. That article is for stuff in the 20th century. 2004 is a part of the 21st century. You may want to put it in the main article at Royal tours of Canada.
  2. With regards to this edit, why was {{WPCFL}} added?
  3. With this edit, the credit should go to G2Bambino as all I did was split the 20th century off into it's own article.--Rockfang (talk) 02:33, 20 June 2008 (UTC)

Hi

Hi SriMesh, how are you doing? I've been meaning to write to you for a while just to say hello, but haven't had any particular special news to write so I have held off. Have you been keeping busy with Saskatchewan-related articles? How's that going? Recently I have become involved in WikiProject Vancouver, which has been fun. Actually I saw you had written a note or two on I think the WikiProject Vancouver discussion page, was it? I can't remember for sure. Anyway, I hope all is well. Look forward to hearing from you whenever you have time. Moisejp (talk) 03:32, 22 June 2008 (UTC)

Hi again, thanks for your note. I'm glad you liked my article, thank you. Good job on your two SK highway GAs, too. And I see you're doing GA reviewing too, that's cool. That's something I would like to try at some point, but right now I just don't have the time (plus I figure maybe I should write one or two more GAs myself before reviewing others). Actually, my end of June resolution that I decided on last night is that I unfortunately need to take a break from Wikipedia for a while, to get caught up on some other commitments in my life. Which is too bad, because I do love Wikipedia so. But I will be back sooner or later. (And who knows, maybe I won't be able to keep away, but I have to at least try!) Take care, and talk to you later! Moisejp (talk) 00:28, 26 June 2008 (UTC)

NY Route 343 GAN

There are some issues with your review, could you please take a look? Comments have arised mainly about unnecessary stuff and all.Mitch32contribs 22:23, 23 June 2008 (UTC)

Hi. I've made changes that could be made per your suggestions. Most of what you said should definitely be incorporated or at least touched upon in the article. However, there is a lack of sources (at least those accessible online) on the influence of this road on the communities around it. In terms of construction and paving, I don't think there is anything noteworthy about this particular case as it is a regular minor rural highway. Anyway, please have a look at the article again to see if it is good enough. We will definitely try and add your suggestions over time as sources are found (which may require a trip to a local public library or historical society). Thanks. --Polaron | Talk 23:16, 24 June 2008 (UTC)

Zack Smith

It would appear that he doesn't meet the criteria for notabiliy as he's never competed in a fully professional league or played at the highest level of amateur competition where as Brent Bobyck has played professional hockey. If he doesn't meet those criteria or the general criteria at WP:N then he shouldn't have an article. --JD554 (talk) 09:35, 27 June 2008 (UTC)

I expanded upon this article a bit for you. If you want to try to remove the PROD, go for it. I'd say your only stance for argument of keeping the article, though, is that he did play in six games with the Manitoba Moose (of the AHL, a fully professional league) during the 07-08 playoffs. Skudrafan1 (talk) 11:51, 27 June 2008 (UTC)
Ah, I should have looked in to his playing career rather than taking the article at face value. If he's played in a pro league then he meets WP:ATHLETE. I've removed the prod. --JD554 (talk) 13:10, 27 June 2008 (UTC)

RE:Reward Board Request

Hi-
I'm not sure if this is the sort of thing you were looking for, but I'm not very good at article writing, so I made a graphic. It's a map that shows all the villages along with Saskatchewan Highway 11:
Map
It's in a vector format, so you can resize it as you see fit. I used the colors defined by the MOS for maps, but I can change them if you wish.
I spent about an hour and a half on it between tracing maps, finding the cities, etc etc. Let me know if this is acceptable to you--

NY highway sufficiency database

Hi. I replied to your posting on Talk:New York State Route 343. The database is indeed a very rich source of information for highway articles in New York and the State Routes project would definitely make extensive use of this. Is there a way we can get a copy of this from you? Do you have any suggestions for sending such a large file? I can probably setup an FTP server if needed. Thanks. --Polaron | Talk 14:11, 9 July 2008 (UTC)

It may take a bit more time to setup the FTP server. However, if you don't mind the postage and blank CD cost, snail mail might actually be easier. Let me know if that's alright with you and I'll email you my mailing address. Otherwise, I'll work on setting up FTP this weekend. Thanks again. --Polaron | Talk 14:25, 11 July 2008 (UTC)

Saskatchewan Portal Issue Still Unresolved

I have looked over the Saskatchewan portal and can't figure out how to make it so it fits on the page. It still is stretching the page. I have looked at other portals like Iceland and New South Wales and all their content fits well on the page without stretching it. I have read your comments on the Saskatchewan Portal talk page about you having a wide screen monitor. Now I think the portal should fit nicely on the page regardless of the reasons. A lot of people do use 1024x768 setting for their monitor. Besides, it would look much better if it was back to the width it originally was while still having the current layout. Mr. C.C. 1. Thanks for fixing that. It didn't look right with cellpadding and cellspacing. Thanks again for fixing that.
  2. You do a lot with Canadian articles and you deserve the award.
  3. Also take a look at the new colours on the WP: SKCN navigation template. I wanted to use the colours on the Saskatchewan flag. Tell me what you think.
  4. Have been adding stuff the WP: SKCN Assesment Department and added a list of B-Class articles. If there are other articles for FA, GA, or start class, than add them in.
  5. I added some article class icons to the Saskatchewan Assesment Department.
  6. I want it to get done so Assesments for WP: SKCN can get started.

Re: Canada talk page template

Sorry for the late reply. I'm currently on the road and don't have access to a full computer, so I don't think I can properly look over templates, otherwise I'd love to help out. I hope that Qyd was able to help you. If I'm reading your code right, will it make it so that articles tagged as both SK and as a community will automatically be also added to a third SK-communities project? If this is that case, cool idea.  :) --Arctic Gnome (talkcontribs) 21:50, 22 July 2008 (UTC)

I just wanted to let you know that after putting in the code, I realized the importance categories for WikiProject Saskatchewan Communities & Neighbourhoods didn't match the quality categories (missing a related), so the editorial bot didn't count the stats. I've fixed the issue on the Canada banner {{WikiProject Canada}} and I'm putting in the old importance categories for deletion. Best, --Jh12 (talk) 22:33, 31 July 2008 (UTC)
Thanks for the award! I did a lot of similar template work for WikiProject Schools. Incidentally, I've been working on the Schools Portal and I noticed Portal:Saskatchewan had a peer review. If you don't mind, I could make some minor changes to that. Best, --Jh12 (talk) 00:44, 2 August 2008 (UTC)

How goes the review for New York State Route 100? I was looked through the backlog and noticed it had been on hold for awhile.
