Project

I note that a student project has appeared creating articles about Hindu temples - I have identified seven people here. Is it possible for you to take them in hand and give them some guidance on what a Wikipedia article should look like? — RHaworth (talk · contribs) 10:00, 2 September 2011 (UTC)

Sadly, most of these articles will have to be deleted because they are copyvios from ignca.nic.in, for example this one, with negligible attempt made to trun them into articles. — RHaworth (talk · contribs) 17:52, 4 September 2011 (UTC)

I am rather disappointed that you have not even acknowledged my message. I have now created Wikipedia:Bhubaneswar temples project. Your assistance in taking this group in hand would be greatly appreciated. — RHaworth (talk · contribs) 12:11, 20 September 2011 (UTC)

You are welcome, not many can differentiate between myth and history when writing about these topics, you do a good job to maintain the difference. Keep it up. Kanatonian (talk) 14:50, 12 November 2011 (UTC)

I've understood you've made some reverts in the page titled above. Revenue administration is local administration but not local government. It is a state subject as they are directly responsible to state government. Put forth your ramifications if you have any. What they've mentioned in Govt. website is the divisions of administration. --BabuOnWiki (talk) 16:12, 13 November 2011 (UTC)

Both of our edits hold good - I am also referring the local body website. Administration is done at administartive and revenue levels - they are also local bodies. I have specifically not added the revenue details table considering it irrelevant. These two are overlapping and hence to avoid confusion to readers, i have included. Please include them if you find it valid S Sriram(talk - my page - contribs) 21:27, 13 November 2011 (UTC)ssriram_mt

Revenue Blocks

Having a glance at administrative divisions of Tamil Nadu, I've found that the term 'Revenue' is included for 'Blocks'. I could understand that by the way of 'Revenue block' it means 'ஊராட்சி ஒன்றியம்' here. If so it's an error as the panchayat blocks or unions are developmental blocks. Revenue blocks is never used in TN. Only revenue divisions are there, but they are meant for revenue administration assisted by Revenue Divisional Officer. refer here. --BabuOnWiki (talk) 04:54, 1 December 2011 (UTC)

Are you referrring to this- List of Developmental administrative units of Tamil Nadu? I have added the definition of revenue administration in contrast. Blocks are administrative units only. The category name(Revenue blocks of Tamil Nadu) is misleading - just for consistency across districts, i used the same naming convention & created missing ones. The category needs a overhaul. S Sriram(talk - my page - contribs) 11:50, 1 December 2011 (UTC)ssriram_mt
I've now come with a clear description of the issues found in regard to the Govt. of Tamil Nadu articles. Your contributions List of Developmental administrative units of Tamil Nadu and List of Revenue Divisions of Tamil Nadu are written well and they are not of our concern now. Please visit page. Developmental blocks (ஊராட்சி ஒன்றியம்) are referred as 'Revenue Blocks'. This is also carried to the sub-pages in this category. This is misleading and erroneous. --BabuOnWiki (talk) 14:27, 5 December 2011 (UTC)
All the block pages are wrong - i have highlighted this [[1]]. So are the taluks - the users who created got confused with administrative and actual village pages. S Sriram(talk - my page - contribs) 22:42, 5 December 2011 (UTC)ssriram_mt
I'll join the club soon. Just read all the discussions. I've proposed the idea to him earlier. Let me make this clear to you. Revenue admin units are the sub-entities of the state govt but they are not the local entities. Local bodies are the one for which I've made articles. Revenue admin units are permanent executives and local bodies are elected temporary bodies. Revenue divisions comes under Revenue dept. and local bodies such as Municipalities, City Municipalities, Blocks, Town Panchayats, Village Panchayats comes under Local Admin and Rural Devpt. Dept. We both shall be clear with this to avoid misunderstandings later. Can we rename or move categories? If so, I'll start renaming soon! --BabuOnWiki (talk) 04:18, 6 December 2011 (UTC))
I am proposing a step further - delete all the articles under the category. They are of no value and I don't foresee any expansion scope. It is merely an org structure or rather more like a branch of a bank.S Sriram(talk - my page - contribs) 04:02, 6 December 2011 (UTC)ssriram_mt

Regarding peer-review of Tiruchi

I am sorry if I was harsh. But you see, your statement that the "statements lack local knowledge" were imperious and uncalled for. I had spent 4 years in the city and I know a great deal abt it. Anyway it is not a requirement in Wikipedia that ppl should come from a place in order to write abt it. I was just asking for sources. In the midst if all this, was this necessary?-RaviMy Tea Kadai 15:03, 22 December 2011 (UTC)

All through i have been commenting on the contents and i dont think it was imperious anyway(as there is no personal reference and i have provided lead for most of my claims). Also this article needs to be the best representing Trichy(as it is FAC). Dont you think there are primary mistakes - "Maris is quoted as Morris, Our lady of Lourdes as St Joseph college church, missing mention of Teppakulam & main guard gate, chatram bustand-central busstand are close to each other, paddy not the primary crop"? If only people from a given place should write, then no one can make shared contributions. What i mean is locals can provide better leads and that is always best for geo articles. Some of the common phrases like "The climate of Tiruchirappalli is favourable and healthy", "The alluvial soil is conducible for agriculture and crops such as ragi ", "both accessible through a 437-step stairway" - these dont look specific. If you were in Trichy for so long, I am pretty sure you would have made to MG gate innumerable times. Most pics of rockfort always come with Teppakulam.. these are inseparable from Trichy. S Sriram(talk - my page - contribs) 01:14, 23 December 2011 (UTC)ssriram_mt
The theatre is mentioned as "Morris theatre complex" by the Limca Book of Records. See here. It does look a bit absurd but we go by the sources. The Teppakulam is just a tank and has no "architectural significance" of its own apart from the fact that it forms a part of the Rockfort complex. Also, most books on Trichy, both historical as well as contemporary, dont mention it. Anyway, I'm planning to incorporate a line or two abt Teppakulam in the description of Rockfort. Mentioning the main guard gate might be outside the scope of this article.-RaviMy Tea Kadai 14:59, 23 December 2011 (UTC)

Hindu temples in Cuddalore district listed at Redirects for discussion

An editor has asked for a discussion to address the redirect Hindu temples in Cuddalore district. Since you had some involvement with the Hindu temples in Cuddalore district redirect, you might want to participate in the redirect discussion (if you have not already done so). RaviMy Tea Kadai 05:10, 5 February 2012 (UTC)

I am messaging you because you appear to have been involved with the so-called Bhubaneswar temple project. Most of the articles under this category are barely small shrines which form part of a larger temple complex and do not satisfy notability criteria on their own. I suspect the IGNOU document's credibility in calling them "temples". Accordingly, I've merged the 8 pages created for the eight different Astasambhu shrines with the article Astasambhu Siva Temples. I'd rather request you have a look at the pages and fix them up. Even, categories such as Hindu temples in Thanjavur district or Hindu temples in Dakshina Kannada or Hindu temples in Varanasi don't have so many articles. I suspect if most of these temples are really notable.-RaviMy Tea Kadai 06:17, 5 February 2012 (UTC)

I have tried to reference and structure most of the articles. The original idea of starting the project was to get off the IGNOU references. I think i have already merged the Astasambu articles and i am perfectly fine with it. The original creator of the articles didn't differntiate shrine vs temple resulting in so many articles, which otherwise are not notable individually. I have compiled the temples into List of temples in Bhubaneswar. Time and again i add references soon i come across and will add some as well. Some of the categories may not have as many, but potentially have lot of scope - esp Thajavur district should. Some may have naming differences b/w 'district' and "District", resulting in some more unused ones. I am perfectly fine with deleting or redirecting them as well.

Ssriram mt (talk) 13:38, 5 February 2012 (UTC)ssriram_mt

Yeah, but you hadn't redirected those individual articles to Astasambhu Siva Temples. I did the same. Names of districts like "Thanjavur District" are proper nouns and should be capitalized (like Harris County, Texas). Almost all other Wikiprojects do the same. I simply don't understand why Wikiproject India alone uses lowercase letters.-RaviMy Tea Kadai 18:37, 5 February 2012 (UTC)
A "district" is a common noun and should be in lowercase but "Kanchipuram District", "Chennai District", etc., are proper nouns.-RaviMy Tea Kadai 18:40, 5 February 2012 (UTC)

Help requested

Sriram, would you consider coordinating the Tag & Assess 2012 drive please? You are an experienced editor, understand the nuances of the WikiProject India talk page template and are genuinely interested in assessing. My area of responsibility being the whole WikiProject, it will allow me to devote some effort to encourage other parts of the WikiProject which are now defunct, which otherwise I may not be able to do if I devote all my time to this. I'm sure the community would be very happy too to find a new person organising the present activities. Organising activities has other benefits such as developing online leadership skills, etc, and a spoken reputation as you are well aware. Also, not just me but the community will be there to help you. Tentatively, I've planned it as a three month event so there is no great commitment of time required on a daily basis. AshLin (talk) 03:53, 29 February 2012 (UTC)

Thanks, that is a very great help to me. :) AshLin (talk) 04:12, 29 February 2012 (UTC)
Fyi Wikipedia:Bot_requests#Message_to_take_part_in_Assessment_Drive. AshLin (talk) 20:06, 29 February 2012 (UTC)
You are doing great, :)! AshLin (talk) 19:11, 2 March 2012 (UTC)

Responsibilities :)

  1. You need to force-purge the WikiProject Statistics tool which gives us the statistics about articles. Bot is supposed to update it automatically at 3.00 AM UTC ie 8.30 AM each morning but for some reason doesn't do it. The homepage for WikiProject India article statistics is this page. The force purge option is listed in the left hand menu as "Update project data". Press this & load India as the project name. It will initiate a script. Wait 15 minutes for it to activate. Then revisit the homepage for Indian WikiProject statistics, you will find the data updated.
  2. Also save a screenshot of each days statistics before you purge. (It will be needed for comparing statistics).
  3. I have been taking the figure at the junction of the row titled "???" & the column titled "Unassessed " for the baseline progress. However, the articles number increased by about 300 odd, that means 300 odd of our assessments were replaced by fresh unaccounted for articles nd we undercounted. You will need to think out better metrics & parameters. AshLin (talk) 05:42, 3 March 2012 (UTC)
There were quite some added in Bengal project. I usually go by category to get the accurate numbers - the project stats is not correct most times. I will start posting stats from tomm.
Hope you are aware of Guide (part 1) & Guide (part 2) (under development). AshLin (talk) 05:04, 4 March 2012 (UTC)
Very good addition, Sriram, I took the liberty as making it Part 3 of the Guide :). I'll be frank that I could not have written it. I'll read it in detail & comment on it later. There is good synergy netween us. The reason I moved was the page was becoming too deep. AshLin (talk) 05:19, 5 March 2012 (UTC)
Cool, np - i also wanted to keep it clean. Ssriram mt (talk) 00:10, 6 March 2012 (UTC)ssriram_mt
Hi Sriram, Your figures seem incorrect and I do not know how you calculated them. I would request you to write the detailed calculation in commented out wikitext. It allows the cross-checking by others - you can check my calculations & vice versa. I have also added a webcitation citation which will save the snapshot of the statistics for our reference. Use this page for archiving each day's WikiProject summary). Earlier I was downloading on my computer but I think using webcitation is better, it makes it available online. I'll find a way to archive the older snapshots too. Best wishes. AshLin (talk) 06:09, 5 March 2012 (UTC)
I ran the process manually and got the snap and later in the morning, i found different figures. I will post on comments as you suggested. Ssriram mt (talk) 00:10, 6 March 2012 (UTC)ssriram_mt
Thank you Sriram for the barnstar. I would like to give my 2 cents worth of comments. I took it upon myself to look at all the articles that have a stub template in them and decided to assess them as stubs, using AWB. Over the last week or so, I have assessed more than 2000 articles as stub using AWB. In that process, I also found that some articles were not tagged with India project template and hence those were the additions. This causes the number of articles to increase. I believe there could be more than 300 additions from my counts - there must be some way to look at the AWB statistics (new talk pages), but in some cases existing talk pages without India project template would also have got the template added. Hope this helps with your collaboration and coordination plans. VasuVR (talk, contribs) 02:58, 6 March 2012 (UTC)
Vasu, your contributions are valuable indeed, especially, the tagging of new pages with the WikiProject India template. I wanted to point out that you could add much more value to your edits for which I have given detailed feedback. AshLin (talk) 05:03, 6 March 2012 (UTC)

Talking on a slightly serious note here. One of your responsibilities as a coordinator is to give detailed feedback to users. For this you need to be master of the WikiProject India template yourself! Friendly word of advice, please check out every parameter of the template and experiment. Please also read guide part 2 carefully as I develop it. I have given detailed comments on a user just before this post to you. Please read that also, because gentle guidance is something which is very much in your charter of responsibility.</serious> (Ah, I just now noticed you gently nudged Anbu. That's the spirit!) Pending work

After two more days ie 9th & 10th we would complete one week in the new tally system and ten days since the drive started. At this time, we need to start awarding barnstars for those who have met the landmarks. You also need to verify cursorily that they have in fact assessed that many articles or so by quick & dirty counting from their contribs. For that you need time. I recommend a break from your assessing now. Our assessing/not is immaterial. You now need to begin the counting and awarding - start with those with smaller counts first.

I have also made some changes to the award systems - an additional set of awards for bot users. Plus they would need ten times the edit count to get the equivalent manual awards. Please see the changes I made and feel free to change/revert them if you disagree.

Have you understood how to save a webpage snapshot using webcitation.org?

Thank you for the details. It is just to be aware of various ways of cutting and dicing stuff. I am just glad to ensure we have more pages identified as part of our project during my processing and methodology. I have also slowed down to stop and really check the class and importance & in some cases to look for sub-project relevance, etc. Hopefully that will reduce needs for any second pass. --VasuVR (talk, contribs) 16:14, 18 March 2012 (UTC)
Sure, do it at your ease. I am randomly checking and making corrections as well. We have added around 4.5k articles during this period and hence it is additional. I expect more articles to be brought to the scope of the project.Ssriram mt (talk) 17:34, 18 March 2012 (UTC)

I would like to know if you know of anyway of getting the full list of articles under a category. This will help in my improving efficiency of working on the un-tagged articles. AWB has a limitation of fetching only 25000 articles at maximum. I am not able to get full list of stubs using AWB. Any help / pointers in this matter would be highly appreciated. --VasuVR (talk, contribs) 07:09, 19 March 2012 (UTC)

I would suggest using kingbotk plugin for including untagged for a given article. This is more of find and replace without the plugin. I would always suggest adding in hundreds rather than thousand, whereby we have a control of the whole process. Also there is the risk of double listing as done by some bots. Ssriram mt (talk) 23:34, 19 March 2012 (UTC)
Thanks Sriram. I was thinking more in lines of using AWB itself for the edits (hence manual in that sense), while getting the full list of articles from some categories from another method. I think I will request for a bot account at AWB with nolimit option, which should solve my requirement. VasuVR (talk, contribs) 01:02, 21 March 2012 (UTC)

Tool server is experiencing tremendous lag. I think about 1 day and 10 hours of lag is found. If you go to your own contributions and choose Edit count at bottom of list, you will find your statistics are quite old (that is 1 day and 10 hours old). I believe they may have a problem that has caused this. I have been noticing my edit counts stuck for last 1 day because of this. They may have stopped the various bots that depend on the statistics of tool server. --VasuVR (talk, contribs) 07:09, 21 March 2012 (UTC)

Request for coordinator guidance

Hi, As I go through my own process of accumulating pages lists from various categories, I have come across many pages of interest to WikiProject India, which still do not have the tag. Hence, these will be out of radar of the people who are assessing those that are already within purview of the project. Initially I thought I could myself assess these additional pages (for want of better term), but have soon found that the numbers could be humongous. So, I am looking for suggestions from you as to how these can be taken forward in coordinated fashion.

Topic/Sub-project Count of un-tagged articles*
Andhra 1768
Assam 192
Bihar 471
Chhattisgarh 83
Gujarat 1162
*The above could include some false negatives (that is some pages may already be tagged as part of WikiProject India but still appears on this list), but is likely to be just a few or a few 10s of them, compared to the huge numbers above.

These are just the tip of the iceberg. I think I can identify approximately 5 times the above, if not more, for further action from our team. VasuVR (talk, contribs)

Can I start on two things. A. Addition of sub-pages to Tag & Assess 2012 - two for each state having text based list and links based lists. B. Add coordination table to the main page itself, instead of talk page. The suggested format is below. I wanted to check with you before going ahead.
Topic/Sub-project Count of un-tagged articles* Text list Links list Volunteer(s) Status
Andhra 1768 Andhra List Andhra Links Not Started

India Assessment 2012 and AWB

Hi Ssriram, thanks for replying. Even i wanted to use AWB,(i even took the permission for AWB for this) i have installed the kingpin plugin and went through the AWB manual as well, but unable to load the list of categories in awb, for assessment. I would be glad if you can guide me through the procedure to use awb for assessment, i tried following the Guide3 for india assessment also but could not help myself out. Some help will be very much appreciated. (i am online at the moment)-- ÐℬigXЯaɣ 13:34, 24 March 2012 (UTC)

Choose categories like category:Unassessed Indian politics articles. List ->Convert to talk page will load the talk page. You can either load another awb window to preview the actual articles. There are certain options to find and replace given parameters. Goto Options ->Advanced settings(click on enabled). Create a find and replace with relevant parameters of conversion. ex. Find {{WP India|class=stub}} and replace with {{WP India|class=stub|importance=low}}. You can choose relevant skip options.. you are ready to go. If you are facing technical issues, try re-installing AWB. Kingbot operates only for the directory it is installed, so keep the dll in the folder where awb exe is present. Ssriram mt (talk) 13:51, 24 March 2012 (UTC)
ok , m trying-- ÐℬigXЯaɣ 13:55, 24 March 2012 (UTC)
Ok, i followed above instructions kingpin is up and working thanks, i am able to load the categories, now how to load another awb window (or in browser)to preview the actual articles. ? -- ÐℬigXЯaɣ 14:25, 24 March 2012 (UTC)
Q2. What actually do we place in find and replace boxes, i tried entering an 'empty template' in find box and a 'filled up template' in rreplace box and the result is the 'filled up template'was copied 4-5 times :( -- ÐℬigXЯaɣ 14:32, 24 March 2012 (UTC)
Q1: Double click on awb icon and it will open another window. In that window, you can actually load the contents and for the main window it should be talk pages. Q2: You will have various patterns - Find {{WP India|class=stub}} and replace with {{WP India|class=stub|importance=low}}. If you give only part of it, it repeats many times, so prefer chosing the whole of the template. You can create many rules for various patterns. Ssriram mt (talk) 19:13, 24 March 2012 (UTC)
  • awesome it works, thanks a lot, i am able to assess using AWB now, credits to you-- ÐℬigXЯaɣ 23:30, 24 March 2012 (UTC)
I didn't knew i can open two instances of AWB at a time. But yes i can, so I have 2 AWBs open at a time. In the main AWB window i am changing(find+replace) the project templates and the other AWB window has a list of the article pages, right now i double click the items on the article list to open them one by one in the browser, any suggestion to optimize this, or this itself is the std way-- ÐℬigXЯaɣ 23:56, 24 March 2012 (UTC)
You can open the article AWB by doing a start and it will continously load. Also you can use the skip option, so if the search string is not found, it would jump to the next page where it finds the replacement. Try to experiment with your rules(using if, if not contains etc) - these are very effective. Also take common patterned categories so that find and replace can be easily effected.Ssriram mt (talk) 00:10, 25 March 2012 (UTC)
Thanks a lot, i am able to assess using AWB now. is there a way to load a next article in the web browser (to view the content ) using AWB, it would be very helpful, if you can, as of now i have to click elements one by one from the AWB list-- ÐℬigXЯaɣ 13:43, 29 March 2012 (UTC)
Choose a category page and do a shift+click or ctrl+click on the article (to open in new window) - this is an alternative using the browser. With AWB, we see the source contents when the load the article and may not be very conducive. I do a start in both artcile AWB & talk AWB and proceed for assessment. Ssriram mt (talk) 23:40, 29 March 2012 (UTC)
Thanks, i have followed ur advice and opened two AWBs, somehow the ctrl-click or shift-click on the list items does nothing. But double clicking does open the article on the browser. so thats what i do for the assessment. Completed 1500 articles, we do not have an award for 1500 but can i get the Indian service award (gold) which i missed earlier ? ill take a wikibreak and will join soon. regards-- ÐℬigXЯaɣ 20:43, 31 March 2012 (UTC)
Use ctrl+click or shift+click from the category pages to open in new window. But i find doubleclick option a bit easier. Thanks a lot for your contribution.Ssriram mt (talk) 20:51, 31 March 2012 (UTC)

Sorry to jump in but, I had one doubt. I got bronze after getting above 200 assessments, so if I reach 400+ will I again get a batch, the silver award? Yasht101 :) 03:00, 26 March 2012 (UTC)
yes.. it is incremental based on the counts. Ssriram mt (talk) 03:01, 26 March 2012 (UTC)
Okay, thanks, I have 552 by now, is there any limit of doing it cause I saw few editors going above 1000s? Yasht101 :) 04:34, 26 March 2012 (UTC)
Sky is the limit. Do not worry about the counts, if you do gradual edits, those will increase simultaneously. Ssriram mt (talk) 12:15, 26 March 2012 (UTC)

Thanks

Never knew that Thirukkandiyur and Thirukkoodaloor were temples :-) I was under the mistaken impression that Thirukkandiyur was made of the syllables Tiru+Kandi+Ur and that "Ur" meant "town" or "city". Thanks for enlightening me.:-)-RaviMy Tea Kadai 11:00, 26 March 2012 (UTC)

The villages where these temples are located are Kandiyur and Aduthurai respectively - while most of the old names(village names same as temple names) are extinct by now, these temples still retain those. Also these are original contents, unlike copy pasting others' work into a new article like in Nageswaran Temple, Kumbakonam - so enlightment would always be there. Ssriram mt (talk) 12:13, 26 March 2012 (UTC)
Once you click on the "Edit" button above an article you get the message - "If you do not want your writing to be edited, used, and redistributed at will, then do not submit it here." Also see WP:OWN. This is a collaborative effort and no one owns any articles here.-RaviMy Tea Kadai 17:33, 26 March 2012 (UTC)
Aduthurai does exist today. In any case, we do have articles for dead cities - see Gangaikonda Cholapuram, Mohenjodaro and Vilcabamba. Better disambiguation is needed in such cases.-RaviMy Tea Kadai 17:48, 26 March 2012 (UTC)
So what is the purpose of posting it here - i suppose it is just because i created the article? Now going back to the topic, i have always contended that most these villages have nothing notable other than the temples - most derive their names from the temple deity names(you have acknowledged this with a merger request of Sivagurunathaswamy temple and sivapuram). I have converted most of them to temple pages and havent reverted any edits done in this angle. You haven't initiated any discussion for renaming or redirection for any of these either. If you are planning for any redirection or renaming or disambig, I am not going to revert it. I specifically raised the point of copy paste because it looks wayward. Take a recent example of Pazhayarai and Someswarar Temple, Pazhayarai - one it has a misleading history and second the talk page of the village shows that of the temple. Shouldnt that be a renaming against temple and fresh article for the village? Even with such knowledge of rule books, some of your recent articles have come under deletion and duplication - so introspection is always a good medicine. As is always the case, i dont want too much discussion in this, we have killed it a lot - let us get to action please.Ssriram mt (talk) 23:18, 26 March 2012 (UTC)
I don't understand why you always think I'm out to get you. I feel I've made a valid point and I only solicit your opinion with regard to the issue raised. (You could have very well disambiguated the temple articles by naming them Thirukkandiyur Temple, etc., to differentiate them from the name of the place) I've very well explained my edits in edit summaries, etc. (in rare cases, I might have missed them but I don't have any qualms abt clarifying if you are going to ask me abt them). However, if you wish to indulge in finger-pointing and tit-for-tat accusations, I can very well find plenty of faults in what you do, including your assessments. However, this is not my purpose. Those articles I redirected to need to be redirected and such redirects need not be discussed unless they prove to be extremely controversial. (Unfortunately no one has thought so or atleast no one indicated them to me). The only thing which has proved controversial is the method I used for disambiguating or redirecting those pages. My way of copy-pasting them might appear absurd to you but Wikipedia's ambiguous policies regarding copyright appear more absurd to me. And then, which deletion are you speaking of. The last article of mine to be "successfully deleted" was more than a year back. I do agree that I make many mistakes - in fact, everyone of us makes mistakes. It is only proper that we acknowledge them and correct ourselves. Retorting with counter-attacks don't look good.-RaviMy Tea Kadai 16:46, 27 March 2012 (UTC)
If it was a genuine case of notifying about the renaming, the remarks wont have any sarcasm and neither would be in a user talk page glorifying the enlightment - are these not finger pointing or personal? You show me the rule book, which i follow, but fail to follow the guidelines of redirect stating the guideline itself is ambigous- double standards? While doing a wrong redirect, you have been notified by senior editors like reditgerxyz (in Nageswaran Temple) and even after showing the source for Ketu Stalam, you didnt have the courtesy to take back the comments - "What the hell is" and none of your non-controversial renaming has been reverted (even though a copy paste against guidelines), so what else do you expect? As indicated earlier, i am perfectly fine with genuine renaming and redirects - so what is stopping you? Thala puranam is a non-popular genre in Tamil literature that derives the source of village names. There were giant revamping during 7th-10th centuries with the popular Tirumurai and Prabandam later on. Kandiyur has two bigger temples, one is the Kandeswara Siva temple and other Harasaba vimochana temple. Since savities were in the earlier age, Siva temple got precedence with the name. This is the case with most villages having these twins(including Aduthurai). Check books by Minakshi Sundaram pillai or Crest of Dravidian culture. Common nouns like Alangudi siva temple, kandiyur siva temple would refer to more than 3-4 entities as these villages(in Thanjavur district) have more than one Siva temple.Ssriram mt (talk) 22:28, 27 March 2012 (UTC)
I had already brought them to your notice and still you didn't care about fixing them. How else do you expect me to respond? "Kethu Sthalam", etc., are purely religious terms appropriate only while looking at the shrine in the context of Navagraha temples. Besides, I guess it is obviously not the lay name of the temple. Ask a villager directions to Sivan Koil or Murugan Koil and he might be able to guide you safely; but I very much doubt if it would be the same case with "Kethu Sthalam" or "Rahu Sthalam". In Wikipedia, it is a general practice to give names based on popular usage - in most cases, the lay name of the temple appears to be the most popular. However, you are very much welcome to mention in the article itself that the temple is known as "Kethu Sthalam" because it is one of the Navagraha sthalas and has an idol of Kethu. True, there might be more than one Siva temple in a village. There are no prescribed rules but an "Alangudi Siva Temple" refers to the "notable Siva Temple" in the village. The question of disambiguation arises only when there is another "notable" temple to Siva in the same village. And notability is obviously on basis of sources and such disambiguation is done after a discussion. As of now, I don't think there is any danger in naming an article as "Alangudi Siva Temple" or "Siva Temple, Alangudi" unless it could be proven that there is another and equally notable Siva temple in the same village.-RaviMy Tea Kadai 16:54, 28 March 2012 (UTC)
Looking at your reply, it seems you are totally unaware of the trends in Navagraha temples - all of these(though Tirunallar has a larger volume) have a visitor average of 700-1000 private vehicles every weekend alone. This is over the public transport and other local visitors. Check all the bus routes and the common terminologies in any of the websites or travel routes - no one would be aware of your "popular" name of Naganathar temple for both Rahu and Kethu stalams. A simple drive towards poompuhar will show the number of occurences of Kethu stalam in the sign boards to prove which name is more popular. Is the page locked that prevents you from editing - i have given a go ahead that i won't be reverting any edits done in this angle. Secondly, after the initial discussion a few months back, i havent created any new page with the controversial name sets - so i dont see why this string is started at all. If the same user has to edit, i have also notified about the wrong talk page created in Pazhayarai or Nageswaran temple by redigerxyz earlier - are they actioned upon? Or if you want, i can request some users not related to the subject to pitch in here to support me and later give them barnstars just because they supported me? We have wasted too much time already in a killed subject - you being a veteran contributor can channelize in other activities of higher importance.Ssriram mt (talk) 22:55, 28 March 2012 (UTC)

Tamil Jain

Hi! I noticed that you have an extensive experience with Tamil history. You had also assessed Tirumalai_(Jain_complex). Thank you for that. I was wondering if you had good knowledge about Tamil Jain history. I know for a fact that Tamil Nadu has a rich history of Jainism but I myself do not have much knowledge of it. I wanted to request you to please help improve and expand the collection of Tamil Jain articles on Wikipedia with whatever knowledge you have to preserve this rich part of Tamil history.--Aayush18 (talk) 05:51, 27 March 2012 (UTC)

Hi Aayush, I have references on the origin of Jain history in Tamil Nadu(& subsequent downfall) and will add when i find some free time. A search on early Pallavas and their architecture gives us lot of links to the existence. Ssriram mt (talk) 12:09, 27 March 2012 (UTC)
Added census data in Tamil Jains page - probably this can be kept as the index page for Jainism for TN articles. A template for most popular Jain temples across regions is also another suggestion.Ssriram mt (talk) 23:58, 27 March 2012 (UTC)

You changed my score at Individual tallies!! Can you explain me ? -- ɑηsuмaη ʈ ᶏ ɭ Ϟ 12:49, 30 March 2012 (UTC)

The counts are for the top edits done on a given page. If you look at your contribution, click on the "top edits" and count the set. If a page is edited more than once, it is still counted as one. Please correct it if i got it wrong.Ssriram mt (talk) 16:51, 30 March 2012 (UTC)
ya you are right If we count only top edits. But I assessed more than 160 articles, then rest are reassessed by others. I see User re-assessing unnecessarily. No problem. Thank You :) -- ɑηsuмaη ʈ ᶏ ɭ Ϟ 17:16, 30 March 2012 (UTC)
Your contribution will be against your count, though it might be re-assessed by others. I will compute stats and publish as such. Ssriram mt (talk) 22:11, 30 March 2012 (UTC)

Can you please more the details in Aeri Katha Ramar Temple to Eri-Katha Ramar Temple and thereby, merge both of them. Eri-Katha Ramar Temple appears to be the more popularly-used spelling as per [2] as opposed to [3]-RaviMy Tea Kadai 06:54, 1 April 2012 (UTC)

Tag & Assess - you are doing just great!

Hi Sriram, you are doing just great. Everything's fine. It really does not matter too much about individual assessments as Flag Steward's bot will reassess all articles as per algorithms. I was quite amazed with how much competence you are heading this project. This gives me great pride and happiness. Remember though, that your main way of contributing is not by assessing but by running this drive, interacting with and motivating editors, clarifying issues, gentle guidance. The output will increase as more people get to like this activity. Flag Steward's joining the drive is a sign that all is well - he may not have chosen to support a failed or botched up initiative. Just keep up the good work & remember what I suggest as your main focus. I will get back to you with specific points if any. You are now going beyond the stage where I could give you WikiLove & barnstars. Only the pleasure of coordinating this successful drive and seeing the magic figure zero come forth in remaining articles are the true motivators for you. :) AshLin (talk) 03:51, 2 April 2012 (UTC)

Thank you for the encouragement, motivation and guidance. It has inspired me to keep going and trying to contribute in multiple ways. From the count perspective, I would like to just say that I have grabbed the low-hanging fruits (the management cliche that everyone seems to be using now-a-days). Running through some categories, choosing the easy ones, etc., along with planning, combinatorics and tools have helped in the numbers, which anyone with similar knowledge of tools could have easily achieved. Thank you and other editors who have motivated me further. --VasuVR (talk, contribs) 01:29, 5 April 2012 (UTC)

Tidbit

Did you ever wonder how and why the totals of the individual tallies are short of the total assessment count by a few thousands? :) --VasuVR (talk, contribs) 01:39, 5 April 2012 (UTC)

I actually expected the reverse way with the increasing re-assessments. Also the recent counts have updated top edits, so there would be differences. I am a wild fish myself having closed in on 8k, which i havent updated in the list. Ssriram mt (talk) 01:42, 5 April 2012 (UTC)
I understand that your counts are not updated. To let you in on the information that I found is that more than 3500 categories and 750 templates have been brought into WP India net. You can compare early March snapshot with latest and you will see the jump. These are also some of the low-hanging fruits I was talking about - one need not worry about importance parameter for these and hence tagging these was like dime-a-dozen. --VasuVR (talk, contribs) 02:18, 5 April 2012 (UTC)
The fringe items have to be closed as well, so no worries. More than 70% articles are stub class of low importance and hence tagging those should be relatively easy. Numerically these are the giants. Ssriram mt (talk) 02:23, 5 April 2012 (UTC)

Edit summaries for tag-and-assess

Hi, is there any way that you can put out a message asking people to use edit summaries while on the tag-and-assess drive? Some do and some do not. It really does waste a lot of time when the thing is omitted, partly because India-related talk pages seem to be particularly prone to people refactoring the posts of others & therefore unsummarised edits need to be checked. User:Madhuric is currently a particular nuisance in this regard, or at least is so for me because they are tagging articles on my watchlist. That user is also not changing their style despite a plea to do so. Thanks. - Sitush (talk) 09:41, 17 April 2012 (UTC)

Assessments for images too?

Are there assessments to images too ?? --Rsrikanth05 (talk) 11:45, 20 April 2012 (UTC)

Even those on the Commons? Those files don't actually exist on this Wikipedia. --Rsrikanth05 (talk) 12:16, 20 April 2012 (UTC)
The ones in common would be out of scope. I guess most would have been or gradually would be moved there. Ssriram mt (talk) 22:26, 20 April 2012 (UTC)
I just asked as Yasht101 was tagging them. Those pages would get deleted as talk pages of non existent pages. --Rsrikanth05 (talk) 06:04, 21 April 2012 (UTC)
Will discuss with him. Ssriram mt (talk) 11:51, 21 April 2012 (UTC)
I am stalking your talk page sir. :) Yasht101 11:57, 21 April 2012 (UTC)

I have removed those 41 assessments made. Yasht101 12:04, 21 April 2012 (UTC)

Thanks mate. And one more for taking things up on your own to completion. Ssriram mt (talk) 12:10, 21 April 2012 (UTC)

wondering about wekend special activity

Did we have a weekend special activity? What was it? And where are you announcing it (I came to know about it from the barnstar you gave me!).--Dwaipayan (talk) 00:47, 25 April 2012 (UTC)

The assessment rate is lower in weeekends. Please check the special awards section for the criteria. Ssriram mt (talk) 02:25, 25 April 2012 (UTC)
I saw in the individual tally that few have dates 19, 23, 24 but most of them have 25, so wanted to know that if you were counting their work or you missed out. It is a big job and you have to do it on your own, so I can think that how troublesome it can turnout to be. Best Regards, Yasht101 02:42, 25 April 2012 (UTC)
I do for all - just that i forgot to update the dates - thanks for pointing out.Ssriram mt (talk) 02:43, 25 April 2012 (UTC)

Ok, yes I saw it. Good strategy.--Dwaipayan (talk) 02:57, 25 April 2012 (UTC)

The idea was suggested by Amartya. The fresh assessment has taken up pace with the assessment bar - let us all work together to close the 4700k articles by May 5. I am equally closing in on re-assessment and also the large fishes in importance assessments. Thanks a lot for all your enthusiasm. Ssriram mt (talk) 03:00, 25 April 2012 (UTC)

Hi can you reassess this article. It has been developed well since the last assessment. --Vensatry (Ping me) 12:47, 26 April 2012 (UTC)

Done. Once the drive is complete, the mechanism for re-assessment would be to mark the articles as unassessed for reviewers to pick for reassessment. Ssriram mt (talk) 22:07, 26 April 2012 (UTC)

assessment of quality and importance

In case I observe that while doing Tag and Assess 2012 someone has gone overboard, then what, according to you, would be the way to resolve the issues? Arunbandana (talkcontribs) 17:25, 27 April 2012 (UTC)

You can always do a reassessment. If you find the same editor repeating it, you can post in his talk page. The higher quality articles are anyways subject to reassessment as you see here. Thanks a lot for raising interest and for all your continuous contributions. 22:02, 27 April 2012 (UTC)

Tag and assess - importance

I realise that the "importance" element etc of tagging articles is subjective, but how do you justify a "mid" rating for this? The T&A drive is a good thing but I am seeing a lot of (what seem to me to be) strange outcomes. Is it somehow connected to the assessment bar thingy, which I have not really looked at? - Sitush (talk) 01:12, 29 April 2012 (UTC)

It is based on this discussion. While the importance is highly subjective, some borderline cases are always possible. Ssriram mt (talk) 01:17, 29 April 2012 (UTC)
Thanks. That discussion, which I had not seen before, is with regard to tribes etc. I think that when we get into the area of dress etc then it is somewhat different from the main articles for each of those communities. I will have a think and perhaps add a note or restart the discussion. If I do then please do not be offended if I use the diff above as an example - I understand your rationale even if I may be dubious of it. It has the potential to affect, for example, all of the "List of members of X caste" articles, which are mostly fairly trivial except to members of the specific caste & members of other communities who (alas) want to engage in a bit of warfare. - Sitush (talk) 01:34, 29 April 2012 (UTC)
Though it is a local attire, it is closely associated with the culture of Kerala and commonly used across a large majority. Rather than the caste perspective, it is the most ancient form of dress in Kerala still in use. I am pretty sure at least 1 crore people use it or would have come across - so mid is quite justifiable. Also the contention part comes into vogue only for the top or high, which itself is a whale in the ocean. So let us shift the focus to relatively higher importance contentious cases. Ssriram mt (talk) 02:59, 29 April 2012 (UTC)
Sitush, are you objecting mid importance for India Project or Kerala Project? IMO, it should be low importance for India but Mid for Kerala is ok. §§AnimeshKulkarni (talk) 06:35, 29 April 2012 (UTC)
It is the India project bit that concerns me. I know little about the sub-projects and would not dream of commenting about them. - Sitush (talk) 10:40, 29 April 2012 (UTC)
Either case can be mid. 1cr off 120 crores is no small a number. As I mentioned previously, the prime focus should be on the top and high importance contention cases. Ssriram mt (talk) 12:08, 29 April 2012 (UTC)
Why should the focus be on some articles and not others? That seems like some form of article apartheid: one rule for some, another for everything else. Nor do I understand why < 1 per cent is "no small a number" - statistically, it is definitely a small number. - Sitush (talk) 15:25, 29 April 2012 (UTC)
It is no segregation, but the priority for things of higher importance. For me 1cr and 1cr off 120 is huge - so take ahead on reassessment of importance if you feel otherwise.Ssriram mt (talk) 15:33, 29 April 2012 (UTC)
Let's see if Animesh has anything further to say, in the light of our subsequent remarks. - Sitush (talk) 15:37, 29 April 2012 (UTC)
Frankly speaking i don't see how even calling this a top importance article matters. As of now, i mean. We aren't using these importance tags anyways. We dont edit higher importance articles on priority. Do we? We are ofcourse supposed to do that; personally or through INCOTM or other drives. But you cant force editors to edit on articles they personally don't want to. The importance tags mostly go unused. But for this particular example; attire of 1/120th population is of low importance in understanding or defining India (or even prioritizing, if we at all do.) §§AnimeshKulkarni (talk) 15:46, 29 April 2012 (UTC)
It does and that is why the drive is initiated. The priotiry is always given for the most read and most popular(rather needed) ones. Since the interest of editors vary as you mentioned, we have drives to fill the gaps. Ssriram mt (talk) 15:53, 29 April 2012 (UTC)
So are you tagging on basis of popularity or need? §§AnimeshKulkarni (talk) 20:31, 29 April 2012 (UTC)
The subsequent expansion of articles out of the drive will be driven by importance. The assessment activity os mpt execited based per need or popularity.Ssriram mt (talk) 03:08, 30 April 2012 (UTC)

some plan for the last phase of the drive

Hi! Although I do not have any concrete plan, please plan for a really uplifting drive for the last phase of the assessment drive. I am hoping numerically all will be done by the deadline (including categories such as Indian Geography, Kerala, Karnataka etc). Around the middle of May, if it possible, try to publish what are pending.--Dwaipayan (talk) 06:02, 5 May 2012 (UTC)

yes - was planning to do today, will publish it. You are right that numerically we will be through, but we can always push for better. I am rather happy about the fresh tagging - close to 5k articles added in the past 15-20 days.Ssriram mt (talk) 11:32, 5 May 2012 (UTC)
Just saw it and did it. But why only those few groups? There must be others, right? Anyway, I have no idea how you are computing so many kind of groups. Hope participation will increase towards the deadline.--Dwaipayan (talk) 00:40, 10 May 2012 (UTC)
Yes - need to garner a bit of speed - publishing a few more. Ssriram mt (talk) 00:50, 10 May 2012 (UTC)
I wish I knew how to use AWB. That enhances speed manifolds. I am allowed to use it (for many years), but never understood how to use it :(--Dwaipayan (talk) 02:16, 10 May 2012 (UTC)
Well, I could go only up to loading the article list and converting them to talk page list. In fac, I did enter strings in the find and replace under advanced setting as well. But then how do I actually do something? Do I need to click "start"? If ys, what do I choose under start?--Dwaipayan (talk) 03:25, 10 May 2012 (UTC)
Ok. I did as you told. Right now, the talk page list is showing an the talk page of an article Anantharam, Nalgonda mandal. In the other AWB window open, I previewed the article, and I am sure this is stub. Now in the original AWB window, how do I effect the change? Do I just click "save"? (I have not manually edited anything in the edit box). Will it automatically replace {{WP India |class=Stub |importance= |auto=yes }} with {{WP India |class=Stub |importance=low |andhra=yes |andhra-importance=low |geography=yes |geography-importance=low }}? Or do I have to click something else or do something?--Dwaipayan (talk) 03:52, 10 May 2012 (UTC)
And bye the way, under "start" tab, (probably I wrongly chos something) the drop down menu is showing "clean up". What to do? (I have relaunched AWB once, but it is still showing the same; perhaps somehow it got saved.)--Dwaipayan (talk) 04:00, 10 May 2012 (UTC)

Still can not do it :( I do not see any yellow color. The save button is green. I clicked save. That talk page was replaced with the next talk page. But that particular article's assessment was not changed. I dunno what's wrong. I have a feeling there may be something to do with the dropdown menu under "start" tab. I gives only a few options (such as clean up, change category etc), but I am not going to do any such thing. I am going to do assessment for WP India. How do I bring that and effect that? If I am taking a lot of time, may be you can declare a pause, and I will resume trying later!--Dwaipayan (talk) 04:25, 10 May 2012 (UTC)

updating tag and assess status and user awards

hi Sri, I am glad that our drive is moving at a steady pace. To encourage the participants to give a final push, i guess it would be a good idea to update the user stats in the table and award them for their contributions. the last one was done at 8 May 2012 2130. Hope to see Zero very soon. cheers -- ÐℬigXЯaɣ 19:03, 24 May 2012 (UTC)

I was actually caught in quite a few of the worklist and hence requested participants to post themselves. Will update that today. Ssriram mt (talk) 22:04, 24 May 2012 (UTC)

Another weird reassessment

Please can you explain this reassessment, given the quality scale that is applied. I am seeing a lot of these but, frankly, cannot be bothered following up most of them precisely because of the numbers involved. - Sitush (talk) 00:12, 31 May 2012 (UTC)

It is not comprehensive enough to be rated B. Infobox, structure, background, introductory explanation are not complete.Ssriram mt (talk) 00:15, 31 May 2012 (UTC)
Explain further, please. For example, there is no requirement for an infobox and indeed most articles do not have one (including many that are GA etc). You managed to asses the thing in around about a minute - that is an absolute nonsense unless you are already very familiar with the subject matter, which I doubt. - Sitush (talk) 00:20, 31 May 2012 (UTC)
Oh, btw, I agree that the lead could be better - so why not fix it? It is a summary and requires no great effort. - Sitush (talk) 00:23, 31 May 2012 (UTC)
Lead expanded. - Sitush (talk) 00:38, 31 May 2012 (UTC)
It doesnt require an expert in the subject to do an assessment - common sense indicates an article should be simple for a layman to understand the contents. Since ratings are relative, get to have a read of the B class biography articles and the guidelines for assessment. Ssriram mt (talk) 00:52, 31 May 2012 (UTC)
Ah, this seems like you are copping out. This is not the first time that I have queried an assessment and you seem then to go vague instead of more specific. What is your problem with "background" and "structure"? Do you accept that infoboxes are not a requirement? What can you add to the article that is not already said? A comprehensive article is dependent upon the information available ... so I presume that you are aware of information that is not included, otherwise how can you judge that? What is not simple for a layman to understand? Do you think that James Tod fits that last criteria, given that it is pretty esoteric in its discussion of worldview concepts etc (and was praised for being an article that does not "dumb down")?

Tagging is easy if you cop out and, to be honest, although I appreciate the intent of the T&A drive and your central role in it, it is causing an awful lot of problems due to ill-informed drive-by stuff. Sure, it is probably a net benefit, but quite a lot of articles on my watchlist have been assessed time and again of late due to what seems sometimes almost to be a desire to gain another barnstar. Not that I am accusing you of trophy hunting, but others most likely are. I am going to bed, but might well revert your assessment tomorrow unless I can figure out what it is that you are judging against. - Sitush (talk) 01:20, 31 May 2012 (UTC)

I am not shrugging away - being the major contributor of the article, you have assessed it yourself - first place against guidelines. Why not take it positive and fill the gaps - relevance, structure, reference struct... - check the guidelines again. It should be nothing less than a GA and should have marginal misses. While i dont insist on infoboxes, dont they make it presentable and easily readable? If you treat the initiative as just a run on the mill, you are highly mistaken. You wont have an organized set of worklists obtained anywhere until such a drive is initiated and most articles will remain hidden/unknown. Just because some of the articles have not been rated as per the author's expectation, one cannot cry foul on the drive. Ultimately it is the article content that should hold, rating is just a serializing activity. Peace and go ahead. Ssriram mt (talk) 01:38, 31 May 2012 (UTC)
