Namibia's north eastern parks[edit]

Thanks for the links and the encouragement. I will be updating the Nkasa Rupala (Mamili) and Mudumu national parks pages too, and want to create a page for the project NamParks. As stated, I have 24 years experience with working directly with Namibia's national parks and reserves. Namibia has quite a number of articles already but biodiversity, geology, flora, and fauna generally lack behind. {{Help me}} Greetings, I am back and very rusty after the holidays! I want to continue getting info up and running on north eastern parks. I also would like to create a stub or article on the NamParks project. This is my current area of expertise. Any further guidance would be great, particularly about Wikipedia etiquette as I am still a bit overwhelmed.

In my spare time, I will later endevour to update and ensure correctness of all national park entries. I helped produce the national parks brochures and the MET's State of Protected Areas Report.

Hi Stralitzia, for new articles it is best to create them in your user space. That is an article which starts with User:Stralitzia/ (with a forward slash), and then has the intended article name. For NamParks for instance, it would be User:Stralitzia/NamParks (simply click on the red link to create the page).
As long as you work in your user space, you don't have to worry about Wikipedia's 1000 rules (but: no copyright violations, even there). Let me know if you have a draft ready, I'll then look over it. Cheers, Pgallert (talk) 13:20, 7 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hello there! I have written updated text for Mudumu National Park. Can you access my sandbox? I would love your comments. References have not been inserted as I dont seem to be able to access the Ministry of Environment and Tourism's home page! I am using Chrome. Hi Stralitzia, that is a good draft which will make a nice article. A few hints on how you can further improve it:
  • Formal aspects:
    • Headlines should not be capitalised, except for the first letter
    • There is too much white space on the page. As a rule of thumb, you basically never need the <br/> tag, and in the source code, two line feeds are almost always sufficient (one line break to end the line, and one line break to produce one empty line in the source)
    • If you mention units you may also cater for readership that is used to imperial measurements like pound or mile. I use the {{convert}} template for that. Check out your sandbox' source code, I have implemented it in the first paragraph for the area of the park.
    • If you want to use an image or a map, you must upload it first. For that, the image must be under a free license like Public Domain, or it must be your image, your own, private creation. If the map is suitable in this respect (I doubt it, maps are usually under copyright) you can go to http://commons.wikimedia.org, there is a wizard available to upload files. Alternatively, if you have GPS coordinates you can project them onto a pre-existing map. I have done that for you, check your sandbox.
  • Content aspects:
    • Wikipedia's content needs to be referenced. For every paragraph there should be at least one. There is no problem to reference sources that are not online.
    • Due to concerns about advertising on Wikipedia, most editors do not like to see urls in the text. If it is an important entity, just link it, even if it does not exist, as you did with NamParks Project. If it is not important, just leave out the url. Of the main entity described in the article, the institution's web site can be included under "External links".
    • The references need more than just a url. Write down whatever you can find, publisher, author, pagination, date, title, and so on. I like to use the {{cite}} template. It works like that:

Hi Linda, references consist of two parts: One where you place the footnote, that's the <ref>... </ref> section in the text, and once where the list of references should appear, usually at the end of the article. It is common to use the {{Reflist}} template, I have put it in for you. There can be parameters after the Reflist keyword: {{Reflist|2}} makes a two-column list, {{Reflist|30em}} makes columns of 30 characters of the size of the letter "m".

Thanks for fixing the reference section. I am puzzled as to why some show as separate references, whereas 3, 8 and 23 repeat themselves. What am I doing wrong? Hi Linda, you mixed up a few of the parameters in the references, that's why some of them do not properly show (for instance, they have no title). The normal case is to summarize references, and not to repeat them in the references list.
  • To give the title of a publication, specify the parameter |title= in the {{Cite}} template.
  • To give a reference a name, write <ref name="My reference name"></ref> instead of just <ref></ref>. This way, you only need to write the entire reference (<ref name=A>{{cite ... }}</ref>) once. For every further occurrence of the same reference, you just write <ref name=A/> --- without the {{cite}} template, and without a second <ref> tag, but with a forward slash at the end.
  • I have implemented reference summaries for two of the references --- it also makes the source code much shorter. There is one remaining reference that occurs several times: Ministry of Environment and Tourism (2009). Mudumu National Park. Windhoek, Namibia: Ministry of Environment and Tourism. pp. 4. I leave that one for you to practice. Don't be afraid to lose content that you already wrote. You can always revert back to an older version by clicking on the "history" tab (right next to the "edit" tab) and picking an older version.

Hi Linda, I just realised that the link to Mudumu National Park is blue, that means that the article already exists. Moving is therefore not possible. The way to join the two articles is a so-called history merger; this can only be done by administrators.
I suggest that you look through the existing Mudumu National Park if there is something you could use (the picture, the paragraph about the birds, the National Parks template at the bottom). Hi Peter, I looked at the page initially but it seems it was put up by a tour operator and is not very accurate. That's why i did it from scratch. I actually wrote the State of Parks entries for MET and have spent a lot of time making sure that that info was as accurate as possible - checking with field staff, MET directors etc. I have maps that i will put up soon. Meanwhile, would it be possible to load the Wikis?

Hi Linda, there is nothing wrong with writing something from scratch. It is just that because of WP's licensing conditions, the current version of the article has to be kept as a kind of an archive, and your new version has to "correctly" overwrite the existing one, in a way that one can still figure out who added what. [Talk page stalker:] @SwisterTwister: I'm not sure I can follow you here: A national park, proclaimed 50 years ago, and 250 sqkm in size? That in my book is a pretty strong indicator of notability. @Stralitzia: Several of the references are too unspecific to find them. They don't need to be online but a bit more information would be good, e.g current ref #2, where 'State of Protected Areas in Namibia' could be the title of the book/brochure, or the title of the article in the book.
