I've declined the speedy deletion of the albums as A7 doesn't cover products. As to references, you need to look at WP:RS. No blogs, forums, reverbnation or discogs. To show notability, they should be independent of the band or its label, and saying rather more than (for example) "The Pink Fluffies released their new album 'Descent into the Death House of the Seventh Hell' on July 22, 2009.". The subject of the article must be talked about in 'reliable sources' - that is, discussed (not like The Pink Fluffies I referred to above), and in something independent and reliable. Blogs and forums (and Wikipedia...) are not reliable, because any old passerby can edit them. (Amazon can be used as a defence against a 'hoax' tag, but that's about all.) Places like Amazon aren't reliable for notability - they'll try to sell almost anything. (Conversely, if Amazon DON'T list it, it is 99.99% sure not to be notable beyond the author's five friends who have had free copies...) LinkedIn and AboutUs, IMDb and Spotlight are user supplied info - not good. Directories are out. Good press coverage, BBC review, established literary magazines, critical blogs where the comments are by the blogger and he/she has an article on Wikipedia that's been up for some months and isn't tagged for deletion, that sort of thing. Urgh! What a horrible book name - that makes searching for refs even harder. Still not your fault. Peridon has summed up nicely, I did find http://www.guardian.co.uk/books/booksblog/2008/aug/05/speedystoriesforshortatten by the Guardian's children's book editor - I think that might be a useful thing to include. I also found http://booksforkeeps.co.uk/issue/173/childrens-books/reviews/wow-366-speedy-stories-in-just-366-words as well. Chilled Tango

Is "a 'speciality' that the drink could taste cold even in hot tempertures" referring to another menthol version of the drink, or am I misunderstanding what you're trying to say here? I hope you were intending to add File:Alfriston lock-up 00.jpg to Category:Village lock-ups otherwise I shall feel offended! But in fact we simply do not need a category here that consists entirely of images. The correct place for such is the Commons and commons:Category:Village lock-ups already exists. Indeed, do not be surprised if your gallery gets deleted from village lock-up because excessive image are deprecated. Broadmead may be known locally, and no doubt you know Trowbridge better than I do. But I don't think it qualifies to be listed in the Trowbridge article because:

• Broadmead is not in List of United Kingdom locations: Bro-Bron
• The search box at this Ordnance Survey page does not find it
• The map of Trowbridge Civil Parish at the same page does not show it.

NME 500

We should exercise our judgement. Given that reliable sources across the board (and not just us) call it hopelessly biased, unrepresentative and created from a flawed methodology, if we do present the NME 500 list as a reasonable indicator of merit, we do our readers a disservice. Remember, they read our article and come away thinking Modern Life is considered the 33rd best album ever, better than Abbey Road and Blood on the Tracks! They won't know that the list is Anglo- and rock-centric, while being biased towards more recent albums. Per our WP:VALID policy, "Wikipedia policy does not state or imply that every minority view or extraordinary claim needs to be presented along with commonly accepted mainstream scholarship as if they were of equal validity." Obviously they are talking about matters more serious than pop music, but I think the logic holds here.—indopug (talk) 07:56, 3 January 2017 (UTC)

Are you planning to revamp any other XTC articles or was Nonsuch a one-off? @Ilovetopaint: I've been considering The Big Express for a while now but I haven't got round to it yet (my friend, a huge fan of the album, also wanted to help me with it). Before then I considered Oranges and Lemons but I've abandoned that now as it would take forever (the Nonsuch page was very fun to write but it took up a lot of time, whereas The Big Express might not take as long, given there being fewer reviews, and yet there's still lots to write about, given the album's Swindon Works inspiration and themes). I have nothing else planned though. Good luck with the main XTC article if you do go through with it though, the This is Pop doc certainly provides lots of insight. Hi, TangoTizerWolfstone, I'd just like to welcome you to membership of this WikiProject. I see we share an interest in hill figures — I created the page on the Marlborough White Horse, which you have worked on, and I see you have created and worked on others.

Although the Project has been marked as semi-active, and for now it suits me to leave it like that, things are happening, the Project Page and Portal are developing. I am not a great believer in WikiProjects, individual effort is the thing that really makes a difference, but I do think it helps us to have a bird's-eye view of the coverage of the county, to focus our minds on where there are gaps and weak articles. There is nonsense in both of those books. The one that irritates me is Nickson's -- he mentions Somewhere Over The rainbow getting into the top 20 in the UK!!! Absolute nonsense, but he mentions it no less than 6 times throughout the book! I have contacted the JM websites about it, but they are a bit sleepy. I hate factual errors -- pet hate of mine. I keep an eye on Wiki and all other albums (Sapphire especially) in case some Muppet puts this in! Graeme book is fabulous -- a tough honest read , but 100% accurate and sound interviews and quotes. Nickson's disappointed me though, and yeah it really doesn't take much to check or double check (or sextuple check in this case) chart positions when they're easily available elsewhere. If chart positions are sourced somewhere I always source to OCC as well, at least these days. I'm not sure yet personally – I haven't done much Wikipedia work whilst I've been busy with university assignments so probably won't be doing much until June – but I think I'd be inclined to in some situations. I'd definitely used them in the prose (as I already have for Vincent's book) and I've used another of Thompson's Third Ear books, Reggae & Caribbean Music, in the ratings of an article so I suspect I may use either funk book if it takes my fancy in the moment. Romo

The section is called "Death ..." with specific reference to the Melody Maker editorial where Simon Price declared the movement Dead. It is considered a big moment - every capsule history of Romo (especially hostile accounts) makes a big song and dance about Price's "Romo Is Dead" piece.

The inverted commas are because in reality Romo carried on - and Price acknowledged this in his review of a Belvedere Kane gig, as mentioned in the Wikipedia article.

I will admit I have thought in the past of going for something along the lines of - "Death" (and actual death) of Romo. Romomusicfan (talk) 14:54, 2 September 2022 (UTC)

@Romomusicfan: I still think 'Decline' is better, for the reasons I gave before. "'Death' of Romo" is too informal – if the scene died, or Price declared it as having done so, but it kept on anyway for another year or so as it inevitably began winding down, that seems like the point in which Romo 'declined' (or perhaps a better word), and makes the use of 'Death' even less appropriate. Would a section name reflecting both the decline and Price's piece work? ""Death" (and actual death) of Romo" is worse and vaguer, it can't have an 'actual death'.--TangoTizerWolfstone (talk) 16:00, 2 September 2022 (UTC)

OK, I will reinstate "Decline" until I can think of somethng better. I personally disliked that Erlewine quote and argued against its inclusion but another editor was insistent. Erlewine's quote about how "There's nothing but style and artifice here, and at crushing levels ... it's filled with affectation and pretension" - as though that were a bad thing - shows his fundamental lack of comprehension of Romo since the whole point was to be as artificial and affectating as possible as a backlash against the "Keep It Real, Maaaan!!!" ethos that Britpop had inherited from indie rock.Romomusicfan (talk) 00:16, 3 May 2023 (UTC)

@Romomusicfan: That would be your personal opinion though, and ultimately Erlewine is a RS, whose own observations I think add some balance to the article. I agree that he doesn't appear to quite 'get' Romo's appeal, but I also think Romo has plenty in common with established Britpop groups like Pulp, Denim, Suede circa Coming Up, sure why not Menswear, even Blur at times, alongside peripheral (sometimes-counted) characters like Earl Brutus, Babybird, Space. Britpop never being just a parade of Shed Sevens/OCSs/Casts... And Bowie/Roxy are shared DNA between them both. I think Romo was independent enough without having to exist as a 100% rejection of one (imo inaccurate) reading of what Britpop was. I'll grant you that at least some of those bands flirted with ideas that would become central to Romo. "Girls and Boys" and "Disco 2000" may have experimented with dance pop but still avoided the sheer sleekness and gloss of, say, "Now" by Viva. The nearest relatives to that level of poppiness would be Kenickie circa Stay In The Sun and Sophie Ellis Bextor's post-Theaudience career. The bands you list generally added a safe layer of indie sonics/aesthetics to their mix, like paint thinned with turps.

Erlewine's comments share an aspect with some other music journalists of using indie-acceptable reference points to describe Romo and its close relatives - eg comparing Orlando's "Just For A Second" to the Pet Shop Boys when its biggest debt was clearly to M People's "One Night in Heaven" (or comparing the said "Stay In The Sun" to St Ettiene as though D:Ream's "Things Can Only Get Better" never existed.) That's a shame, agreed – one day, maybe the important roles that handbag house/hardbag/acid jazz/post-baggy pre-Britpop indie and plenty of other things played which have been written out of mainstream history will have nice useable books written about them – but that's just more a bugbear of how many music critics rely on familiar reference points than more precise ones. In the same way that, say, Pet Sounds will lazily be brought up in reference to a hundred thousand stringy pop records when far more suitable comparisons are there to be made. But disliking it has no real bearing on anything. The dissection re:'real glossiness' - or stated lack of indie cool - may be there to help separate Romo from those Britpop bands but it at least acknowledges there are parallels to still be drawn and similar cues at play.--TangoTizerWolfstone (talk) 08:08, 3 May 2023 (UTC)

Unrelated to the article but I wonder, had Price and Parkes not christened their chosen bands 'Romo', would those bands pass for forgotten Britpop groups today? The thing is, Price and Parkes didn't invent Romo. Club Skinny co-promoters Paul "Hi Fi" Nugent and Kevin Wilde deserve primary credit for launching a glamorous pop night right in the middle of the Britpop nest at the Laurel Tree pub (then home of Blow Up) - with secondary credit going to members of female glam band Persecution Complex for establishing the practice of glamming up to go to Club Skinny. Simon Price was not the Malcolm McLaren of Romo, he was the combined Caroline Coon/Don Letts of Romo. The Malcy/Viv of Romo were HiFi and Kevin while the PC girls were the Jordan/Bromley Contingent of Romo. Romomusicfan (talk) 07:45, 3 May 2023 (UTC)

Ultimately I think the gift of the name 'Romo' as the wrapping paper for these groups, the Melody Maker coverage, etc. is what has solidified it for so many. Had it not been for the name (and obviously the resultant history post-95), I'm not convinced the idea of it as a distinct thing would be all too recognised in 2023, no matter how unfortunate that would be. In a similar manner to how there were (as far as I can tell) separate Britfunk scenes in the early 80s based in different clubs – one 'scene' for instance was seemingly jazz-funk to the end, another important in the embryonic stages of the New Romantics – but they're all just 'Britfunk'.--TangoTizerWolfstone (talk) 08:08, 3 May 2023 (UTC)

My take on it was that Price was about to invent Romo but then found it already up and running at Club Skinny. As far as music press coverage goes there is a similar point to be made re: if Caroline Coon had called the Sex Pistols Fan Scene something other than Punk (say, "Klomp" or something) and had not made the connection to the CBGBs scene in New York in her writing and declared the Pistols scene to be the UK wing of what was going on in NY then what would be the repercussions for modern recognition of said NY scene? Would it still be seen as the root of "Klomp Rock" or would it be just an obscure relic?Romomusicfan (talk) 08:46, 3 May 2023 (UTC)

Also it's worth adding that Minty were the only real bolt-on to the scene as far as the press coverage went (and even they went along with it, sharing a drummer with Plastic Fantastic, playing both Club Skinny and Arcadia and Minty members' offshoot bands like Massive Ego and Elizabeth Bunny being heavily connected to the scene.) The other bands became involved in Romo mainly through approaching HiFi and Kevin for gigs - four of the seven were managed by HiFi and Kevin! Romomusicfan (talk) 08:50, 3 May 2023 (UTC)
