GOCE May mid-drive newsletter[edit]

Guild of Copy Editors May 2012 backlog elimination drive mid-drive newsletter
Writing Magnifying.PNG

Participation: Out of 49 people signed up for this drive so far, 26 have copy-edited at least one article. It's a smaller group than last drive, but we're making good progress. If you've signed up but haven't yet copy-edited any articles, please consider doing so. Every bit helps! If you haven't signed up yet, it's not too late. Join us!

Progress report: We're on track to meet our targets for the drive, largely due to the efforts of Lfstevens and the others on the leaderboard. Thanks to all. We have reduced our target group of articles—January, February, and March 2011—by over half, and it looks like we will achieve that goal. Good progress is being made on the overall backlog as well, with over 500 articles copy-edited during the drive so far. The total backlog currently sits at around 3200 articles.

Hall of Fame: GOCE coordinator Diannaa was awarded a spot in the GOCE Hall of Fame this month! She has copy-edited over 1567 articles during these drives, and surpassed the 1,000,000-word mark on May 5. On to the second million! – Your drive coordinators: Dank, Diannaa and Stfg

Richard Manitoba and helping out with unreferenced articles[edit]

Greetings! I noticed that you do anti-vandalism work here and reverted at least once an inappropriate entry by an unregistered editor. Thank you. I have spent the last few years editing musicians' biographies and obtaining photos for those articles, cleaning up all manner of articles poorly written and unreferenced. Please join us! ALSO though, a photographer friend who allowed us many valuable photos emailed me and mentioned continuous problems with the Richard Manitoba article. Would you mind keeping an eye on it? Apparently, someone has vandalized it more than once.. I just don't have the energy and time to spare at the moment. Please answer me on my talk page. Thank you! --Leahtwosaints (talk) 07:50, 30 May 2012 (UTC)

Congratulations[edit]

Wishing you the best!

The Great Revival: CVU Vandalism Studies Project[edit]

Hi! We're dropping you this rather unexpected message on your talk page because you signed up (either quite a while ago or rather recently) to be a member of the Vandalism Studies project. Sadly, the project fell into semi-retirement a few years ago, but as part of a new plan to fix up the Counter-Vandalism Unit, we're bringing back the Vandalism Studies project, with a new study planned for Late 2012! But we need your help. Are you still interested in working with us on this project? Then please sign up today! (even if you signed up previously, you'll still need to sign up again - we're redoing our member list in order to not harass those who are no longer active on the Wiki - sorry!) If you have any questions, please leave them on this page. Thanks, and we can't wait to bring the project back to life! -Theopolisme (talk) & Dan653 (talk), Coordinators

MyRFA[edit]

Thanks for the kind words. Its doubtful I'll reaply again. I tried in 2008 and was declined and I tried again now. As a 38 year old guy, after 2 fails I can take a hint. Especially when its such a bloodbath. Good luck and happy editing. Kumioko (talk) 13:00, 10 August 2012 (UTC)

I can relate to failing RfA twice, except mine were in rapid succession. My second RfA was sort of a bloodbath as well, but from that experience I learned that I don't have to be an administrator to make a big difference here. If you need someone to talk to about your RfA, feel free to email me. Regards, The UtahraptorTalk/Contribs 14:08, 10 August 2012 (UTC)
Thanks, its not that big of a deal but frankly it will unquestionabley have an effect on my future in WP. Cheers. Kumioko (talk) 14:57, 10 August 2012 (UTC)

My RfA[edit]

Thank you for participating in my RfA. I appreciate your insight and am glad you took the time to give serious consideration toward potentially granting me the admin toolset. Likewise, I've seen your name pop up a lot, and I think you've grown considerably since October 2010. Whenever you return to active editing (assuming of course you actually do go on hiatus), if you're interested in becoming an administrator, know that you'll have my full support.

Take care. =) Kurtis (talk) 14:22, 18 August 2012 (UTC)

You're welcome. I'm actually going to stop checking Wikipedia in a week or two and start focusing on finding a job. So it'll probably be a while before I return to active editing. But thank you for the kind words; they mean a lot. :) Regards, The UtahraptorTalk/Contribs 19:59, 18 August 2012 (UTC)
No problem. It's great that you have so many things going on in your life. Hope all goes well, good luck. =) Kurtis (talk) 20:08, 18 August 2012 (UTC)

  • Progress report: We're almost on track to meet our targets for the drive. Great work, guys. We have reduced our target group of articles—August, September, and October 2011—by about 44%, and the overall backlog has been reduced by 58 articles so far, to around 2600 articles. The biggest difference between this drive and the previous one is a stronger focus on large articles, so total word counts are still comparable.

Progress report: We achieved our primary goal of clearing July, August, September and October 2011 from the backlog. The total backlog at the end of the month was 2341 articles, down from 8323 when we started out over two years ago. We completed all 54 requests outstanding before September 2012 as well as eight of those made in September.

Copy Edit of the Month: Voting is now over for the August 2012 competition, and prizes will be issued soon. The September 2012 contest is closed for submissions and open for voting. The October 2012 contest is now open for submissions. Everyone is welcome to submit entries and to vote.

  • Participation: Out of 31 people signed up for this drive so far, 22 have copy-edited at least one article. If you've signed up but haven't yet copy-edited any articles, every bit helps; if you haven't signed up yet, it's not too late. Join us!
  • Progress report: We're on track to meet our targets for the drive. We have reduced our target group of articles—November and December 2011—by over 50%, and 34 of the the 56 requests made in September and October this year have already been fulfilled. However, the rate of tagging for copy edit has increased, and this month we are just keeping the size of the backlog stable. So, all you copy editors, please do come along and help us!
  • The September 2012 Copy Edit of the Month Contest was won by Baffle gab1978 for his copy edit of Expulsion of the Acadians. Runner up was Gareth Griffith-Jones for his edit of I Could Fall in Love. Congratulations to both.
  • The October 2012 Copy Edit of the Month Contest is in the discussion and voting stage until midnight November 30 (UTC). You don't have to make a submission to vote!
  • November 2012 Copy Edit of the Month Contest is in the submissions stage until midnight November 30 (UTC), when discussion and voting begin.
  • Seasonal oversight: We had a slight fall from grace in the title of our last newletter, which mentioned the season in the northern hemisphere and thus got it wrong for the southern. Fortunately an observant GOCE member was ready to spring into action to advise us. Thanks! In future we'll stay meteorologically neutral.

Wikipedia Ambassadors update[edit]

Hi! You're getting this message because you are or have been a Wikipedia Ambassador. A new term is beginning for the United States and Canada Education Programs, and I wanted to give you an update on some important new information if you're interested in continuing your work this term as a Wikipedia Ambassador.

You may have heard a reference to a transition the education program is going through. This is the last term that the Wikimedia Foundation will directly run the U.S. and Canada programs; beginning in June, a proposed thematic organization is likely to take over organizing the program. You can read more about the proposal here.

Another major change in the program will take effect immediately. Beginning this term, a new MediaWiki education extension will replace all course pages and Ambassador lists. (See Wikipedia:Course pages and Help:Education Program extension for more details.) Included in the extension are online volunteer and campus volunteer user rights, which let you create and edit course pages and sign up as an ambassador for a particular course.

If you would like to continue serving as a Wikipedia Ambassador — even if you do not support a class this term — you must create an ambassador profile. If you're no longer interested in being a Wikipedia Ambassador, you don't need to do anything.

Please do these steps as soon as possible

First, you need the relevant user rights for Online and/or Campus Ambassadors. (If you are an admin, you can grant the rights yourself, for you as well as other ambassadors.) Just post your rights request here, and we'll get you set up as quickly as possible.

Once you've got the ambassador rights, please set up at a Campus and/or Online Ambassador profile. You can do so at:

Going forward, the lists of Ambassadors at Special:CampusAmbassadors and Special:OnlineAmbassadors will be the official roster of who is an active Ambassador. If you would like to be an Ambassador but not ready to serve this term, you can un-check the option in your profile to publicly list it (which will remove your profile from the list).

After that, you can sign on to support courses. The list of courses will be at Special:Courses. (By default, this lists "Current" courses, but you can change the Status filter to "Planned" to see courses for this term that haven't reached their listed start date yet.)

As this is the first term we have used the extension, we know there will be some bugs, and we know the feature set is not as rich as it could be. (A big wave of improvements is already in the pipeline. And if you know MediaWiki and could help with code review, we'd love to have your help!) Please reach out to me (Sage Ross) with any complaints, bug reports, and feature suggestions. The basic features of the extension are documented at Wikipedia:Course pages, and you can see a tutorial for setting up and using them here.

Communication and keeping up to date

In the past, the Education Program has had a pretty fragmented set of communication channels. We're trying to fix that. These are the recommended places to discuss and stay up-to-date on the education program:

  1. The education noticeboard has become the main on-wiki location for discussion of the Education Program. You can post there about broad education program issues as well as issues with individual courses.
  2. The Ambassadors Announce email list is a very low-traffic announcements list of important information all Ambassadors need to be aware of. We encourage all Ambassadors (and other interested Wikipedians) to subscribe to the list; follow the instructions on the link to add your email address.
  3. If you use IRC regularly, or need to try to reach someone immediately, the #wikipedia-en-ambassadors connect IRC channel is the place to find me and fellow Ambassadors.
Ambassador training and resources

We now have an online training for Ambassadors, which is intended to be both an orientation about the Wikipedia Ambassador role for newcomers and the manual for how to do the role. (There are parallel trainings for students and for educators as well.)

Please go through the training if you feel like you need a refresher on how a typical class is supposed to go and where the Ambassadors fit in, or if you want to review and help improve it. If there's something you'd like to see added, or other suggestions you have for it, feel free to edit the training and/or leave feedback. A primer on setting up and using course pages is included in the educators' training.

The Resources page of the training is the main place for Ambassador-related resources. If there's something you think is important as a resource that's not on there, please add it.

Finally, whether or not you work with any classes this term, I encourage you to post entries to the Trophy Case whenever you see excellent work from students or if you have great examples from past semesters. And, as always, let students (and other editors!) know when they do things well; a little WikiLove goes a long way!

Injustice: Gods Among Us[edit]

I received your message regarding my recent edit to the page Injustice: Gods Among us, under the marketing sub-heading and felt that I should just suggest why it may be worth while and constructive to leave it there. In a few months, when most fans have played the game they may have been interested to know about the contest and instead of having to filter through youtube and all of the videos relating to the topic, they may have appreciated coming straight to the wiki page and finding it in seconds.

But I am not the expert in this situation, so after my explanation if you still feel it is uncontrstructive and unnecessary, I won't feel any personal offense by your revert.--Coolgoat (talk) 17:19, 17 April 2013 (UTC)

I'm sorry, I'm not sure what you're talking about. It looks like NGPriest was the one who reverted that edit; you should discuss this with him. Regards, The UtahraptorTalk/Contribs 14:38, 2 May 2013 (UTC)

Sort Yourselves Out... Please[edit]

I recently - just minutes ago - made some edits to the 'Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End' page. I shortly thereafter received a message that said the edits I made to the page 'Oba (ruler)' had been reverted: I have never even visited, let alone made edits, this this page, so I have no idea what that's about. The edits I made to the 'Pirates' page where spelling mistakes, and fairly obvious ones at that (whose - who; sherps - ships, etc) yet this 'hardly ever wrong' program of yours undid all of them. Piece of advice: a 'free encyclopedia that anyone can edit', yet one that a user can't even fix basic grammatical and spelling errors on, is simply doomed to failure. This seriously needs to be sorted out, urgently. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.128.146.38 (talk) 10:11, 3 May 2013 (UTC)

IP addresses tend to change very often, so somebody using the IP address you're now using probably committed the act of vandalism. I believe that you are a productive editor, and I encourage you to create an account so as to avoid confusions like this in the future. Regards, The UtahraptorTalk/Contribs 13:33, 7 May 2013 (UTC)

I'm back. Again.[edit]

For everyone who's still watching my talk page, I'm back once again. I guess I just can't bring myself to completely quit editing; I love it so much that I can't stay completely away. I've given this a lot of thought since February, and I've decided to make a permanent return. I won't be retiring again, and I'm going to show it by remaining active throughout the rest of this year, next year, the year after that, etc. I won't be as active as I was a couple years ago, but I'll be more active this year than I was last year. I hope to see you guys around. The UtahraptorTalk/Contribs 00:09, 3 June 2013 (UTC)

  • Progress report: Thus far we have reduced the number of May/June 2012 articles to just 124 articles, so we're on the right track. Unfortunately, for the first time in GOCE history, the number of articles in the backlog has actually gone up during this drive. While all participants are currently doing a fine job, we just don't have as many of them as we have had in the past. We have over 500 editors on our mailing list, but only 18 editors who have done a copy edit for the drive. If you're receiving this newsletter, it's because you have an interest in copy editing. Join the drive! Even if you only copy edit one article, it helps. Imagine how much progress we could make if everyone chipped in just one article.

December Notes from the Guild of Copy Editors
Writing Magnifying.PNG

The December blitz ran from December 8–14. The theme for this blitz was articles tied in some way to religion. Seven editors knocked out 20 articles over the course of the week. Our next blitz will be in February, with a theme to be determined. Feel free to make theme suggestions at the Guild talk page!

The January 2014 Backlog elimination drive is a month-long effort to reduce the size of the copy edit backlog. The drive begins on January 1 at 00:00 (UTC) and ends on January 31 at 23:59 (UTC). Our goals are to copy edit all articles tagged in October and November 2012 and complete all requests placed before the end of 2013. Barnstars will be awarded to anyone who copy edits at least one article, and special awards will be given to the top five in the following categories: "Number of articles", "Number of words", "Number of articles of over 5,000 words", "Number of articles tagged in October and November 2012", and "Longest article". We hope to see you there!

The recent edit that you made to the page In Ghost House Inn: Harihar Nagar 3 has been reverted[edit]

I never touched the page and it's the same one you changed back before which I hadn't touched back then either. It's rather annoying to receive a message about a change made being reverted when the change was never made by me on a page I had never visited. I've no interest in "Ghost House Inn" and until you sent me a message saying I'd editted it some time back, I had never even heard of the thing and this is the second time I've gotten a message about it from you. I did not edit the page at all,EVER. So kindly leave me out of this.

You must not have read my response to you. As I said earlier, I believe that it wasn't you specifically, it was most likely somebody who used your IP address before you. IP addresses get shifted around and reassigned frequently, and this confusion is a relatively common occurrence. And again, I apologize for the confusion. May drive: The month-long May backlog-reduction drive, with extra credit for articles tagged in December 2013, January and February 2014 and all request articles, begins soon. Sign up now!

Thank you all again for your participation; we wouldn't be able to achieve what we have without you! Cheers from your GOCE coordinators Miniapolis, Jonesey95, Biblioworm and Philg88.
