Fair use claim

I just read your response to my dispute of the fair use deletion of Image:Larry Page.jpg. I do not oppose the creation of a free image and I understand its importance, but I think that deleting this image would significantly degrade the article until an appropriate free replacement can be found/created. I think it is not reasonable to delete an image until we have a free replacement, seeing as we are not legally obligated to do so. Sorry, most of my vandalism warnings were for intended vandalism, such as page blanking etc. I gave them the "first and only warning" message, which I deemed appropriate. Senator

The image was posted on the Senator's website. Any information posted on a Congressional website is in the public domain unless otherwise noted. Unless there was some sort of disclaimer on his Senate website that I missed, the image is property of the US Congress, and therefore public domain. Mr. Vitale 04:38, 2 September 2007 (UTC)

Copyrighted material that is placed on government websites is generally clearly marked, because such a small amount of the material posted on these sites is eligible for protection. What information do you have that this picture was originally posted on another site and then later used for the Congressional site? If you've got proof that another entity holds the copyright on this image, then i'll be satisfied. Ok, well I'm glad you cleared up the issue, but don't act like I'm completely unfamiliar with the policy of these government websites. I know that not everything on a congression website is in the public domain. However, in practice, photos taken by outside sources and that aren't owned by the federal government are marked as such. This should probably be better marked so that this mistake won't be made in the future. And yes, I've already seen that photos taken by the Wyoming Legislature are under copyright. Hey dick,

I recently saw that you had deleted the article about Gerald Gustafson. I happen to know him and thought it was, in this day and age, a nice little tribute to a really cool guy. His stories are interesting and he deserves a little credit. You think that its nothing notable, but why do you care? Wha gives you the right to take thins of wikipedia because YOU don't think its notable? Come on dude, let wikipedia be free, not cencord beacuse you don't think its cool enough.

Mark Twain picture

Dear Tom,

I noticed you replaced the image of the younger Mark Twain with a photo of the old Mark Twain. I think I'll switch it back (after waiting for your reply). The reason that a young Mark Twain pix is needed is that ALL the pix of MT in the article are of the OLD Mark Twain. In 1874, when the illustration I put in was first published, MT was already a famous author, at the hieght of his powers and it represents MT as a real person rather than the stereotypical old man in a white suit. Don't you get sick of the Hal Holbrook nonsense? If you don't, then you can look at the other 5 photos in the article! But the main pix ought to be from when he was a notable writer.

Also your old man photo faces away from the article, wheras good practice has the subject facing the article. Now why did you want to put in the old man photo?

Still disagree - as you say, a picture facing toward the article is preferred. I completely disagree that we should put in pictures that reinforce a common stereotype as being preferred to pictures that more accurately show a person in his prime. The engraving, as you note, does have some artistic license involved with it, but of course so do photos! Photos of Mark Twain DO have a terrible bias - most of them were taken in his old age which - with the Hal Holbrook show - leads people to the horrible view that Twain was a crotchety old man. He did not become famous for being a crotchety old man - he became famous for writing about his exeriences in gold and silver mining, living on the frontier, long distance travel by stage coach, camel, etc. Let's, for once, protray Twain as a real living person. There's no rule that says we should follow a silly stereotype. Smallbones 15:01, 27 October 2007 (UTC)

I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Notice to all members of WikiProject Maryland

There are a few things going on right now in WikiProject Maryland that I thought all members should know about, especially the first one.

  • Not too long ago, Marylandstater raised the question of exactly how many members of the project are still active. For this reason, I'm asking everyone who is still active, and wants to remain in the project, to put an asterisk (*) after their username on the project's participants list. You have until the end of November 17, 2007 to do so, sometime after that, all the names that do not have an asterisk will be removed. This is just to clean up the ever expanding list. If you've been gone and come back to find that you've been removed from the list, don't take it personally, just re-add yourself! I won't feel bad at all if no one gets removed, in fact, it would be nice if all 30 members still consider themselves active. Also, this won't affect the two subprojects, but speaking of the subprojects...
  • As of sometime next week WikiProject Baltimore City College will be no more. Myself, Golem88991, and John Carter have decided to make it into a task force of WikiProject Maryland. If you have any objections, concerns, or comments, please post them in the talk page topic concerning this.

Now for the exiting news:

  • I'm pleased to announce the creation of the Baltimore Task Force! Those interested in contributing to Wikipedia's numerous articles related to Maryland's largest city, now have a place to collaborate.
  • I'd also like to take this time to propose a project newsletter. Any comments should be directed at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Maryland#Newsletter.

A couple last things:

  • The portal is in desperate need of maintenance, anyone who's interested, go check it out.
  • It's probably a good idea to add the project page (and thus the project talk page) to your watchlist. That way, you can easily see when new comments are posted.
