Hi, and welcome to the Biography WikiProject! As you may have guessed, we're a group of editors working to improve Wikipedia's coverage of biographies.

A few features that you might find helpful:

There are a variety of interesting things to do within the project; you're free to participate however much—or little—you like:

  • Starting some new articles? Our article structure tips outlines some things to include.
  • Want to know how good our articles are? The assessment department is working on rating the quality of every biography article in Wikipedia.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask another fellow member, and we'll be happy to help you. Again, welcome! We look forward to seeing you around! plange 19:16, 6 August 2006 (UTC)

WikiProject Missouri[edit]

Flag of Missouri.svg

There hasn't been much activity at WikiProject Missouri or any of its child projects lately, and I saw your name on the list of active participants. If you are willing to jump in again, please consider helping to revive the project:

If you know anyone who might be interested in Missouri (its history, culture, sports, people, places, architecture, etc.), please pass this message along to them! If you are still interested in the project but aren't currently active, please add yourself to the list of inactive participants at the bottom of this list. Thanks!

On behalf of the project,  fetchcomms 21:44, 8 February 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for responding! Again, if you know anyone else interested, please encourage them to join in. Keep up the good work!  fetchcomms 15:39, 9 February 2010 (UTC)

You are now a Reviewer[edit]

Wikipedia Reviewer.svg

Hello. Your account has been granted the "reviewer" userright, allowing you to review other users' edits on certain flagged pages. Pending changes, also known as flagged protection, is currently undergoing a two-month trial scheduled to end 15 August 2010.

Reviewers can review edits made by users who are not autoconfirmed to articles placed under pending changes. Pending changes is applied to only a small number of articles, similarly to how semi-protection is applied but in a more controlled way for the trial. The list of articles with pending changes awaiting review is located at Special:OldReviewedPages.

When reviewing, edits should be accepted if they are not obvious vandalism or BLP violations, and not clearly problematic in light of the reason given for protection (see Wikipedia:Reviewing process). More detailed documentation and guidelines can be found here.

If you do not want this userright, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. Courcelles (talk) 17:33, 18 June 2010 (UTC)

Invitation to join WikiProject United States[edit]

Flag of the United States.svg

Hello, TommyBoy! WikiProject United States, an outreach effort supporting development of United States related articles in Wikipedia, has recently been restarted after a long period of inactivity. As a user who has shown an interest in United States related topics we wanted to invite you to join us in developing content relating to the United States. If you are interested please add your Username and area of interest to the members page here. Thank you!!!

Bypassing redirects[edit]

Hi there! I noticed you've been making some edits with the edit summary "redirect bypass". FYI, according to Wikipedia guidelines, "there is nothing inherently wrong with linking to redirects...it is generally an unhelpful exercise, and it can actually be detrimental." Thanks! --TorriTorri(talk/contribs) 18:32, 3 March 2011 (UTC)

Thank you for your note, I was not aware of that guideline and will keep it in mind for future reference. --TommyBoy (talk) 18:38, 3 March 2011 (UTC)

WikiProject United States Government[edit]

Greetings. I noticed that you are one of the members of WikiProject United States Government that are still active so I wanted to ask you a question. It appears that this project is mostly inactive aside from what the members might be doing independently. I was considering suggesting that this project be pulled in under WikiProject United States and wanted to solicit comments from some of this projects members before doing so. As with Washington DC and the others the project would for the most part maintain its own independence but I believe this would benefit both projects. What do you think about this? --Kumioko (talk) 23:54, 24 March 2011 (UTC)

Email[edit]

Hi,

Can you enable email on your account? I'd like to check something with you on a wiki matter if that's ok. Thanks! FT2 (Talk | email) 17:05, 21 May 2011 (UTC)

It's under "my preferences" (or at Special:Preferences) - under "user profile", enter an email address, check the box marked "Enable e-mail from other users" and confirm the email address is valid when you receive the confirmation link from the email handler. Something you posted a while back that I thought I'd ask about. Not specifically edit related. Thanks :) FT2 (Talk | email) 15:59, 22 May 2011 (UTC)
I was thinking of this or this if they're still relevant. If it is, then feel free to drop me an email or note. (Incidentally you'd need to either confirm your email or check the box allowing emails from other users, before it works). FT2 (Talk | email) 17:56, 23 May 2011 (UTC)

Suggestion for WikiProject United States to support WikiProject US Presidents[edit]

Greetings, It was recently suggested that WikiProject US Presidents might be inactive or semiactive and it might be beneficial to include it in the list of projects supported by WikiProject United States. I have started a discussion on the projects talk page soliciting the opinions of the members of the project if this project would be interested in being supported by WikiProject United States. Please feel free to comment on your opinions about this suggestion. --Kumioko (talk) 02:47, 21 June 2011 (UTC)

Oklahoma Attorney General merger[edit]

I oppose the proposed mergered of the Office of the Attorney General and the page for the Attorney General. The AG's page is designed to provide information about the person holding the office and related information. The page for the AG's Office is designed to provide information about the State agency that the AG leads. Compare with Attorney General of the United States and the United States Department of Justice. Though the two pages have similar content, they are two seperate and distinct objects of interest. As always, thank you for your interest in helping to making Wikipedia articles about Oklahoma the best they can be. Rougher07 (talk) 20:43, 31 October 2011 (UTC)

RE: WikiProject Missouri Assessments[edit]

I was trying to help out with the WikiProjects with assessments - I did that school you had posted & then deleted it from the list on the project page. I presume that it will show up on the bot list shortly as "changed". You have been doing this longer than me, so let me know if you see me doing something screwy. I don't get much input from anyone on here, and I shoot from the hip a lot. I know since you are one of my Joplin neighbors that you have my back ;-) BTW so sorry about the tornado there, it still tears me up when I drive through. I hope your family was safe.--Traveler7 (talk) 15:50, 12 June 2012 (UTC)

Userbox fix[edit]

Hello.

I am notifying you that I made an edit to your userpage to repair a userbox issue, which was also experienced by another editor. Please see the link above and the permalink linked in that edit summary. There was a recent discussion regarding that userbox, and it appeared that you were experiencing the same problem. Some coding changes were made to the template, which were made to repair the problems evident. Thanks. 69.155.132.121 (talk) 21:56, 7 July 2012 (UTC)

Channel Tunnel[edit]

So,UK and France are not sharing a border, because a sea separate them? It's like Denmark with Sweden, which are linked by a bridge-tunnel (Oresund)? It's the same,a narrower strait separates these two countries, but are not sharing a border (really)?

P.S:Sorry for (possibly) bad English, but I am not a native speaker of this language.

LacriFlori5 (talk) 13:38, 26 October 2012 (UTC)

No, it's not a border, it's a tunnel under the sea. The UK doesn't share a border with France. Note there is no France–United Kingdom border page. Jon C. 12:16, 28 October 2012 (UTC)

Ok,but if UK shared a border with France in the Channel Tunnel,if was 15 meters long. LacriFlori5 (talk) 18:41, 28 October 2012 (UTC)

Yadira Silva[edit]

Hi, I would like to know why have you rated the Yadira Silva just C? Thanks for your answer. Osplace 00:52, 6 November 2012 (UTC)

Thank you for your question regarding my assessment of the Yadira Silva article. I assessed it as C-class because I felt that the article at a bare minimum met the assessment criteria for C-class. If you disagree with my assessment, you are more than welcome to submit the article to WikiProject Biography for re-assessment, or I would be willing to re-submit it for re-assessment by a third party. --TommyBoy (talk) 07:52, 6 November 2012 (UTC)

Peter Allgeier[edit]

Hi. Up until I made some moderate additions today, you were the top contributor to the article Peter Allgeier. I'd just like to ask you to add the article to your watch list if you haven't already. IP editors keep removing referenced information about Allgeier's lobbying efforts from the article. On one occasion this remained un-reverted for 6 months and on the next occasion it remained un-reverted for 5 months. Due to the nature of my work I often don't access wikipedia (or a computer at all) for several days at a time, which means there are large gaps in my surveillance on wikipedia. I understand you just made some minor fixes to the page, and you probably watch a lot of articles already, but I just want to make sure this article is on at least one other persons watch list so this vandalism doesn't keep going un-noticed. Have a nice day. Freikorp (talk) 12:25, 24 November 2012 (UTC)

Thank you for reporting that to me. I have added the Peter Allgeier article to my WatchList, and will monitor the article for any future inappropriate edits. --TommyBoy (talk) 23:27, 24 November 2012 (UTC)

re: Conflicting Sources on Phil Harris Birthdate[edit]

Hi TommyBoy,

I don't know much about the article. I have done a few things there, but mainly maintenance edits. A few times the birth date has been changed in the body but left as-is in the infobox, so I've reverted the change & made the article agree with itself then just put the link to the most trustworthy source in the edit summary. Most of my work on WP does not include biographies so do you mind if I leave the decision up to you? Thanks, Dawnseeker2000 18:41, 19 December 2012 (UTC)

I opened a thread at WPVA[edit]

As you are another person who has done a fair amount of work assessing for WPVA, I thought I might drop a note about a thread I opened at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Virginia#Assessing the importance of populated places in VA.

Re: Disappearance of Melissa Brannen Article[edit]

The only category I can think to add offhand is Category:Crime in Virginia. It has a number of subcats; you may find one that applies.

As for responding to your assessment request, don't give me too much credit for reading those. I spent most of November and December cleaning out the unassessed article backlog at WPVA, and since then, I've been trying to assess new articles as they appear. There are rarely as many as five a week. Rklear (talk) 21:20, 15 February 2013 (UTC)

Help with C-SPAN FAC?[edit]

Hello there, TommyBoy. I came across your name on the list of participants at WikiProject Politics and see that you're interested in US politics. I'm hoping you might be interested in helping me with an article that falls under the scope of WikiProject Politics. I'm looking for editors to review the C-SPAN article for me. I submitted this article for review at WP:FAC in August, but I've been having a hard time finding editors to review.

With your interest in politics would you be willing to take a look at this article? If you are interested in helping with this process you can find the discussion here. If you know someone who is interested in politics and likes to help with FA reviews, please let me know.

I'd also like to point out that I am a consultant to C-SPAN and because of my financial COI here I won't make any edits to the article directly. This means if you provide me with feedback I can look into your comments and suggestions, but will need someone else to make the actual updates to the article. If there are any updates you are comfortable making while you're reviewing, please do so. Cheers, WWB Too (Talk · COI) 17:57, 27 September 2013 (UTC)

Hi again, TommyBoy. Thanks for your message on my Talk page, and I also see you improved a wikilink in the article last week. Please let me know if you noticed anything else requiring attention, and if you have time to participate at FAC, the discussion is here. Cheers, WWB Too (Talk · COI) 18:18, 1 October 2013 (UTC)

Would you consider unblocking me?[edit]

Hi TommyBoy. This is Colton Cosmic. Excuse me for block evading via raw IP on your talkpage, but I believe I've been non-policy treated in the standard appeals processes and I've no other way to proceed. I come to you semi-randomly: I went to the list of administrators and decided to pick one with the same first initial as him that blocked me, "Timotheus Canens." I passed over a couple "Ts" because their contributions were so strictly clerical, and I noticed where you added information to an environmental official.

Timotheus no-warn/no-discussion permanently blocked me for socking in May 2012. It's simply not true. There was never any evidence. I tried appealing at my page and a bunch of cyberbullying personalities from WP:AN/ANI descended on my talkpage, all making different accusations. I didn't handle it well, I had never been involved in such things, and I was frustrated that Timotheus wasn't communicating anything. I appealed to Arbcom but Silktork refused me, again without explanation. Much, much later, he claimed that he had "secret evidence" that I had been some notorious sanctioned editor. He won't say who that is, so there's no way for me to defend the point. Everything has proceeded all along based on suspicion, not fact.

I edited Wikipedia under a single prior account for about six years, created five or six articles, and greatly contributed to many more. I was never blocked, sanctioned, or even warned. I was nearly strictly a content editor (there was one guideline I tried to improve for a while). An online harassment incident called my attention to privacy, and so I abandoned the prior account and switched to Colton Cosmic, never going back. I was forthright about this from my very first edit: [1]. it was WP:CLEANSTART. Ironically my honesty there has allowed others to accuse me of socking. In my new account I at least created Rain City Superhero Movement and so I feel I cannot be rightfully characterized as an "abusive account." It is accurate that I got pulled into some WP:AN/ANI-style arguing, but that really was a new strange world to me. I found it appalling, a great deal of editors fighting and trying to get each other blocked by manipulating the system.

This is getting too long. I do need to say that in my view, and having studied the policies like a madman, that Arbcom's *decline to unblock* does not somehow turn my block into an *Arbcom block* and this is also what an arb told me: "we have no monopoly on appeals." Therefore any administrator, upon research and discussion, may unblock me under WP:UNBLOCK. If I've said anything that makes sense to you, you can unblock me merely at my talkpage, presumably a less-controversial move, and I'll answer any questions you have. Colton Cosmic. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.69.69.41 (talk) 14:11, 2 January 2014, Thursday (11 days ago) (UTC+0)

Okay, Tommyboy, I see where you queried my blocker a couple days ago. He does have connectivity, one of his alternate accounts edited early on the third, about a dozen hours after you queried him. I recall when I first appealed to Arbcom. Silktork said he had emailed him and wasn't getting a response. IIRC that was like two weeks into the appeal. Silktork told me that if Timotheus didn't respond, then I had to stay blocked. Justice? I don't know if you're thinking about my case, or if you just don't want to get involved and prefer I not post here. You could jumpstart things by opening a dialogue at my talkpage and unblocking me there. I commit to an high standard of behavior if you do so. I further will not begrudge your subsequently removing such talkpage access if you find it was a bad idea, or if you come under pressure from other administrators. Colton Cosmic. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 173.162.247.206 (talkcontribs) 13:16, 4 January 2014‎ (UTC)
I apologize for the delayed response as I have been on vacation with limited Internet access for the past week, but after reading several Talk page discussions relating to your case including one in which you were warned against randomly contacting administrators through your IP address to request unblocking, and I will repeat their advice that you need to follow normal Wikipedia policies and procedures for filing an unblock request. --TommyBoy (talk) 17:18, 13 January 2014 (UTC)
Tommyboy, the polite way to handle such a long delay is with a short message saying "I can't get to this right now but I will respond when I have the time." Since you were unaware of this, I accept your apology. I have pointed you to the unblocking policy which does not forbid me from contacting individual administrators. No-one is authorized to "warn me against randomly contacting" anyone I choose, unless you are of the belief that any administrator may issue a command to any common editor. There is no genuine avenue of appeal open to me except for what I am doing. WP:BASC turned me down last time without explanation, rejects literally 92% of appeals to it, and my original blocker sits there and refuses to recuse. It is not a genuine avenue of appeal. I think very little of your reasoning but it is up to you how you respond to me, so I don't plan to ask you anything else. Colton Cosmic. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 174.252.48.66 (talk) 20:47, 13 January 2014 (UTC)

Seeking collaboration[edit]

Hi TommyBoy, I’m currently working on the page for David M. Cote and I’m seeking out guidance from experienced editors to collaborate with. I’ve disclosed my COI on the article talk page, but have yet to receive any responses there. When you have a quick moment, would you mind taking a look at the draft I have on my sandbox? I’d appreciate any feedback or suggestions you might have. Thanks! --FacultiesIntact (talk) 03:52, 24 November 2014 (UTC)

Lamira, Ohio[edit]

Hello, TommyBoy. Many new unincorporated community articles have been created in the last 8 or so years. I created hundreds of such articles myself in the last year in Ohio and other states. I believe what you want to know is why wasn't there already an article on Lamira, Ohio when you wrote the Susanna M. Salter article? The short answer is a robot started a Wikipedia article for every single incorporated (i.e. city, town, or village in the U.S.) back in 2002. Unincorporated communities are also notable, per WP:GEOLAND, but these articles are usually hand-written when editors find something to say besides just a name and coords.– Gilliam (talk) 05:49, 4 April 2016 (UTC)

Hi TommyBoy, thanks for creating this category. Would you be amenable to having it renamed Category:American slave owners? August 2016[edit]

Information icon Hello! Thank you for your recent contributions to Eric Holcomb. I did have one note for you. I am working on a maintenance project to clean up Category:Pages using infoboxes with thumbnail images. In the future, please do not use thumbnails when adding images to an infobox (see WP:INFOBOXIMAGE). What does this mean? Well in the infobox, when you specify the image you wish to use, instead of doing it like this:

|image=[[File:SomeImage.jpg|thumb|Some image caption]]

Instead just supply the name of the image. So in this case you can simply do:

|image=SomeImage.jpg.

There will then be a separate parameter for the image caption such as |caption=Some image caption. Please note that this is a generic form message I am leaving on your page because you recently added a thumbnail to an infobox. The specific parameters for the image and caption may be different for the infobox you are using! Please consult the Template page for the infobox being used to see better documentation. Thanks!! Zackmann08 (Talk to me/What I been doing) 06:35, 20 August 2016 (UTC)

@Zackmann08:, Thank you for correcting my error with regard to the photo I recently added to the Eric Holcomb article. I will admit that my edit was a bungled attempt to use the photo of Holcomb and his 2016 running mate Suzanne Crouch that had been previously added to the Wikipedia article on Crouch.--TommyBoy (talk) 21:56, 20 August 2016 (UTC)

Extended confirmed protection[edit]

Padlock-blue.svg Hello, TommyBoy. This message is intended to notify administrators of important changes to the protection policy.

Extended confirmed protection (also known as "30/500 protection") is a new level of page protection that only allows edits from accounts at least 30 days old and with 500 edits. The automatically assigned "extended confirmed" user right was created for this purpose. The protection level was created following this community discussion with the primary intention of enforcing various arbitration remedies that prohibited editors under the "30 days/500 edits" threshold to edit certain topic areas.

In July and August 2016, a request for comment established consensus for community use of the new protection level. Administrators are authorized to apply extended confirmed protection to combat any form of disruption (e.g. vandalism, sock puppetry, edit warring, etc.) on any topic, subject to the following conditions:

  • Extended confirmed protection may only be used in cases where semi-protection has proven ineffective. It should not be used as a first resort.
  • A bot will post a notification at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard of each use. MusikBot currently does this by updating a report, which is transcluded onto the noticeboard.
Please review the protection policy carefully before using this new level of protection on pages. Thank you.
This message was sent to the administrators' mass message list. To opt-out of future messages, please remove yourself from the list. 17:49, 23 September 2016 (UTC)

Original Barnstar.png The Original Barnstar
I want to thank you for your work on List of United States presidential electors, 2016 and the clean-up work you've done there. It has been a largely thankless task for myself, and it is from the efforts of editors like yourself that have come in to verify the stuff I've done as well as to clean up areas I've missed that really make Wikipedia work. You really are deserving of this honorable mention not to mention your overall contributions to Wikipedia in general! Robert Horning (talk) 16:29, 9 November 2016 (UTC)

Two-Factor Authentication now available for admins[edit]

Hello,

Please note that TOTP based two-factor authentication is now available for all administrators. In light of the recent compromised accounts, you are encouraged to add this additional layer of security to your account. It may be enabled on your preferences page in the "User profile" tab under the "Basic information" section. For basic instructions on how to enable two-factor authentication, please see the developing help page for additional information. Important: Be sure to record the two-factor authentication key and the single use keys. If you lose your two factor authentication and do not have the keys, it's possible that your account will not be recoverable. Furthermore, you are encouraged to utilize a unique password and two-factor authentication for the email account associated with your Wikimedia account. This measure will assist in safeguarding your account from malicious password resets. Comments, questions, and concerns may be directed to the thread on the administrators' noticeboard. A new user right for New Page Patrollers[edit]

Hi TommyBoy.

A new user group, New Page Reviewer, has been created in a move to greatly improve the standard of new page patrolling. The user right can be granted by any admin at PERM. It is highly recommended that admins look beyond the simple numerical threshold and satisfy themselves that the candidates have the required skills of communication and an advanced knowledge of notability and deletion. Admins are automatically included in this user right.

It is anticipated that this user right will significantly reduce the work load of admins who patrol the performance of the patrollers. However, due to the complexity of the rollout, some rights may have been accorded that may later need to be withdrawn, so some help will still be needed to some extent when discovering wrongly applied deletion tags or inappropriate pages that escape the attention of less experienced reviewers, and above all, hasty and bitey tagging for maintenance. User warnings are available here but very often a friendly custom message works best.

If you have any questions about this user right, don't hesitate to join us at WT:NPR. (Sent to all admins).MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 13:48, 15 November 2016 (UTC)

The Los Angeles Film School[edit]

TommyBoy, I came across your profile on the list of participants over at WikiProject Universities. I'm working on The Los Angeles Film School entry and I could use assistance from another editor. I am an employee of Full Sail University, which is a sister-school to The Los Angeles Film School, so I won't remove the passage myself. Thank you in advance. --Tylergarner (talk) 00:21, 8 December 2016 (UTC)

March Madness 2017[edit]

G'day all, please be advised that throughout March 2017 the Military history Wikiproject is running its March Madness drive. This is a backlog drive that is focused on several key areas:

  • tagging and assessing articles that fall within the project's scope
  • updating the project's currently listed A-class articles to ensure their ongoing compliance with the listed criteria
  • creating articles that are listed as "requested" on the project's various task force pages or other lists of missing articles.

As with past Milhist drives, there are points awarded for working on articles in the targeted areas, with barnstars being awarded at the end for different levels of achievement.

The drive is open to all Wikipedians, not just members of the Military history project, although only work on articles that fall (broadly) within the military history scope will be considered eligible. More information can be found here for those that are interested, and members can sign up as participants at that page also.

The drive starts at 00:01 UTC on 1 March and runs until 23:59 UTC on 31 March 2017, so please sign up now.

Your user name and my user name resemble existing films question[edit]

Another editor has contacted me on my Talk page to indicate that the resemblance of a user name with an existing film must be suspected for conflict of interest and paid advocacy. I assured them that this was not the case and that a number of other editors have user names which resemble existing films. That editor then replied with the statement that it is fine for administrators to have user names which resemble existing films but not for other editors. That sounds a little odd to me. My main interest at this time is in improving the biography article for Akira Kurosawa and some of his films. Could you glance at the comments left by that editor on my Talk page.
