Hey there and hope the New Year starts well for you.

I've just opened a peer review request for George Town, Penang here: Wikipedia:Peer review/George Town, Penang/archive3, having substantially rewritten the article & improved sourcing with the aim of elevating it to FA. I found your name on the volunteers list & wondering if you're keen to help in its review? Many thanks! hundenvonPG (talk) 01:53, 1 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

You have a lot of new fans

[edit]

Hey Tony, I posted about your Wikipedia work on Twitter/X and a lot of people are saying nice things such as "wiki editors are truly one of the few things keeping my faith in humanity alive atm" and "Genuinely inspiring. Dude has it figured out. What a wonderful way to live". Thought you might want to know! Thanks for all you do here. Annierau (talk) 02:39, 20 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The appreciation is really cool. Sometimes, I run into some depressing obstacles in the wiki beauracracy. I do a lot of work and don't always get a positive spin with my efforts. This is a pleasant reminder that people use wikipedia and have fun learning about it. There are a lot of cool characters on WP. That has like 13k likes and 1k retweets. You have now surpassed Alexandra Daddario as the person who has gotten me the most engagements on social media. About 10 years ago she retweeted a picture of a bunny that I took because she liked bunnies on social (like some people like cat videos) back then. Last I looked I had like 150 or 200 followers. Now, I am at over 600. Wow. I need you on my PR team. Thank you so much.-TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 05:13, 20 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
User:Annierau, I am just realizing that your X post has had 409.5K views. Amazing. That is by a mile the most I have ever had.-TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 05:20, 20 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
So glad you appreciate it! I've always found it unfortunate that Wikipedia editors rarely get feedback from the typical readers — people who generally have very nice things to say (unlike the vocal minority of people that fine a way to complain about, well, everything)! I know that people don't edit Wikipedia for fame or glory, but a little bit of encouragement goes a long way :-) Annierau (talk) 00:07, 21 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
User:Annierau, I was hoping you might be able to do the same thing for me on Instagram, but as I look at https://www.instagram.com/depthsofwikipedia/, I see that you focus on actual wikipedia entries there. Well, I will have to figure out how to get some follower growth over there on my own, unless you have some advice.-TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 03:35, 21 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

WikiCup 2024 February newsletter

[edit]

The 2024 WikiCup is off to a flying start, with 135 participants. This is the largest number of participants we have seen since 2017.

Our current leader is newcomer Generalissima (submissions), who has one FA on John Littlejohn (preacher) and 10 GAs and 12 DYKs mostly on New Zealand coinage and Inuit figures. Here are some more noteworthy scorers:

As a reminder, competitors may submit work for the first round until 23:59 (UTC) on 27 February, and the second round starts 1 March. Remember that only the top 64 scoring competitors will make it through to the second round; currently, competitors need at least 15 points to progress. If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, and you hope to get it promoted before the end of the round, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. However, please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAN, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs which could otherwise be caused by the Cup. As ever, questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup and the judges (Cwmhiraeth (talk · contribs), Epicgenius (talk · contribs), and Frostly (talk · contribs)) are reachable on their talk pages. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. DYK for Campbell's Soup Cans

[edit]

On 18 February 2024, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Campbell's Soup Cans, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that Campbell Soup considered suing Andy Warhol for his Campbell's Soup Cans theme, but then promoted it? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Campbell's Soup Cans. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Campbell's Soup Cans), and the hook may be added to the statistics page after its run on the Main Page has completed. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Cwmhiraeth (talk) 00:04, 18 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi TonyTheTiger, thanks for participating in the WikiCup. Unfortunately, Template:Did you know nominations/Campbell's Soup Cans is not eligible for DYK points because it was nominated to DYK as a newly promoted GA. I know this can be disappointing, but Wikipedia:WikiCup/Scoring#Did you know? states that only newly created or expanded DYKs are eligible for DYK points. The rules specifically exclude DYK submissions from receiving points if their appearance on DYK is solely because the article was a newly promoted GA. Epicgenius (talk) 16:21, 18 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

User:Epicgenius Wow. That severely impacts my CUP strategy and greatly demotivates me from improving a bunch of Princeton and Michigan basketball season articles. I doubt I will be 5x any of them. But, hey, thems the rules.-TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 16:28, 18 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Not a judge, but you could still get points for the GAs themselves if they are within the eligible timeframe. QuicoleJR (talk) 20:33, 19 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

WikiCup 2024 March newsletter

[edit]

The first round of the 2024 WikiCup ended at 23:59 (UTC) on 27 February. Everyone with at least 30 points moved on to Round 2, the highest number of points required to advance to the second round since 2014. Due to a six-way tie for the 64th-place spot, 67 contestants have qualified for Round 2.

The following scorers in Round 1 all scored more than 300 points:

In this newsletter, the judges would like to pay a special tribute to Vami_IV (submissions), who unfortunately passed away this February. At the time of his death, he was the second-highest-scoring competitor. Outside the WikiCup, he had eight other featured articles, five A-class articles, eight other good articles, and two Four Awards. Vami also wrote an essay on completionism, a philosophy in which he deeply believed. If you can, please join us in honoring his memory by improving one of the articles on his to-do list.

Remember that any content promoted after 27 February but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, feel free to review one of the nominations listed on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed. Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. DYK for Olivia Olson (basketball)

[edit]

On 4 March 2024, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Olivia Olson (basketball), which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that Olivia Olson won state championships as a soccer goalkeeper and a basketball guard? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Olivia Olson (basketball). You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Olivia Olson (basketball)), and the hook may be added to the statistics page after its run on the Main Page has completed. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.
