WikiCup 2014 August newsletter

The final of the 2014 WikiCup begins in a few short minutes! Our eight finalists are listed below, along with their placement in Round 4:

  1. Smithsonian Institution Godot13 (submissions), a WikiCup newcomer, finished top of Pool A and was the round's highest scorer. Godot is a featured picture specialist, claiming large numbers of points due to high-quality scans of historical documents, especially banknotes.
  2. Scotland Casliber (submissions) is a WikiCup veteran, having been a finalist every year since 2010. In the semi-final, he was Pool B's highest scorer. Cas's points primarily come from articles on the natural sciences.
  3. Nepal Czar (submissions) was Pool A's runner-up. Czar's points come mostly from content related to independent video games, including both articles and topics.
  4. Oh, better far to live and die / Under the brave black flag I fly... Adam Cuerden (submissions) was Pool B's runner-up. Another featured picture specialist, many of Adam's points come from the restoration of historical media. He has been a WikiCup finalist twice before.
  5. Wales Cwmhiraeth (submissions) won the WikiCup in 2012 and 2013, and enters this final as the first wildcard. She focuses on biology-related articles, and has worked on several high-importance articles.
  6. Florida 12george1 (submissions) is the second wildcard. George's points come primarily from meteorology-related articles. This year and last year, George was the first person in the competition to score.
  7. Colorado Sturmvogel 66 (submissions), the third wildcard, was the 2010 champion and a finalist last year. His writes mostly on military history, especially naval history.
  8. Canada Bloom6132 (submissions), the fourth and final wildcard, has participated in previous WikiCups, but not reached any finals. Bloom's points are mostly thanks to did you knows, featured lists and good articles related to sport and national symbols.

We say goodbye to this year's semi-finalists. Herm Matty.007 (submissions), Ohio ThaddeusB (submissions), United States WikiRedactor (submissions), Idaho Figureskatingfan (submissions), Greece Yellow Evan (submissions), Portugal Prism (submissions) and Bartošovice v Orlických horách Cloudz679 (submissions) have all performed well to reach this stage of the competition, and we hope they will all be joining us again next year.

There are two upcoming competitions unrelated to the WikiCup which may be of interest to those who receive this newsletter. The Stub Contest will run through September, and revolves around expanding stub articles, especially high-importance or old stubs. In addition, a proposal has been made for a new competition, the GA Cup, which the organisers plan to run next year. This competition is based on the WikiCup and aims to reduce the good article review backlog.

There is now a thread for brainstorming on how next year's WikiCup competition should work. Please come along and share your thoughts- What works? What doesn't work? What needs changing? Signups for next year's competition will be open soon; we will be in touch. If, at this stage of the competition, you are keen to help the with the WikiCup, please do what you can to participate in review processes. Our finalists will find things much easier if the backlogs at good article candidates, featured article candidates, featured picture candidates and the rest are kept at a minimum. HighBeam for RPG articles

Hey there! :)

Are you ready? I am ready.  ;) When last we left off, we had begun working on biographical articles, as the "final frontier" for HighBeam since we already went through all the computer games and novels and assorted D&D subjects I could think to look at. I have a looooooot to go through, if you are willing to hang with me.  :) For one thing, you might notice the change to the header of this section; it represents a bit of a broadening of my horizons over the past year. I know you are probably aware that I have been putting a bunch of work into RPG bios, so getting more work done with HighBeam in that area seems like a logical next step. KMFDM song titles

Hey! Long time no talk. Hope you're doing well! I was looking at Don't Blow Your Top (album), and I was thinking about the song titles. Specifically those with bracketed titles, like "King Kong Dub" (Rubber mix) and "Killing" (For Your Sampling Kit). I'm wondering if putting those bracket titles in the note parameter is the right way to do this? I'm thinking they're part of the song title (especially in the case of "Killing (For Your Sampling Kit)", which isn't the usual "Song title" (blah mix) format), and I'm thinking they should be moved out of the note parameter and into the main title parameter.

Now, the fun part about all this is that I'm pretty sure I was the one who moved them into the note parameter in the first place (although I could be wrong, but I'm too lazy to go searching through the article's history), but in retrospect I'm thinking that wasn't a great idea. So I'm wondering what you think? Is it a better idea to move those to the title parameter (and thus within the quote marks, such as "King Kong Dub (Rubber mix)")? I mention DBYT, but this would apply to all their albums. I'm quite willing to put in the work myself, but I wanted to see what you thought before I do that. So, what do you think? I'm currently in the middle of doing this, take a look and see what you think so far. For Würst and Greatest Shit, I made a decision to include things like mix names in the title and "Edit" (or "Album Edit") in the note, but if you think the whole phrase should be included in one or the other, let me know and I can change it (or of course feel free to change it yourself). WikiCup 2014 September newsletter

In one month's time, we will know our WikiCup 2014 champion. Newcomer Smithsonian Institution Godot13 (submissions) has taken a strong lead with a featured list (historical coats of arms of the U.S. states from 1876) and a raft of featured pictures. Reigning champion Wales Cwmhiraeth (submissions) is in second place with a number of high-importance biology articles, including new FA Isopoda and new GA least weasel. Scotland Casliber (submissions), who is in his fifth WikiCup final, is in third, with featured articles Pictor and Epacris impressa.

Signups for the 2015 WikiCup are open. All Wikipedians, new and experienced, are warmly invited to sign up for the competition. Wikipedians interested in friendly competition may also like to sign up for the GA Cup, a new WikiCup-inspired competition which revolves around completing good article reviews. With respect, you are partially mistaken. I very unsure about all that, and did a good amount of looking around before making all those changes. I see now that the Greek meanings could be uncertain, but the others have good sources:
  • Maori (life principle and gene): Mead, Hirini Moko; Mead, Sidney M. (2003). Tikanga Māori: Living by Māori Values. Huia Publishers. p. 42. ISBN 9781877283888.
  • Sanskrit: You left in the part saying it is a name for the wind god, but for earth: The Encyclopædia Britannica: A-ZYM (20 ed.). Werner. 1903. p. 674.

HighBeam for RPG articles (part 1)

OK, here we go. :) I have several mini-projects, some small, some quite large, so I will break them up bit by bit to make them easier to digest. Mmm, chewy!

Honoring the dead

I always try to honor the recently deceased in the gaming field, as I am sure you have noticed. On Wikipedia, that means when I hear a person has passed away, I do my best to clean up that person's article (or start an article if there isn't one yet) and encourage others to do the same. Part of why I do this is to honor that person, and part of this is because lazy obituary writers tend to use Wikipedia as their primary or only source, so we had better get it right for them.  ;) Although the deaths below are not very recent, they are from 2013 and 2014, so I figure a good place to start is to see what more we can do for these articles.

I wasn't able to find anything on HighBeam for either Quinton Hoover or Anthony J. Bryant; if you happen to locate more sources for them on HighBeam or anywhere else, then that would be great; if not, don't worry about it. BOZ (talk) 13:28, 4 November 2014 (UTC)

Willis was almost nothing. I added the bit about 6th CoC but there wasn't anything else. Trampier is about the same, just a few bibliographic notes about various editions of the Monster Manual. It didn't look like any of the others had anything great in them, a lot were bare bones obit pieces or letters to the editor rather than proper articles. Bill Fawcett

Hey, if I could ask you to jump on one quickly, I'm concerned that Bill Fawcett (writer) (which was PRODded earlier this week, redirected, and now restored[8]) may come up for deletion. The first of the remaining two sources was already in the article, so I just added the link and fixed up the citation a bit. I noticed that Torchiest and BOZ were two of the main editors on Bill Fawcett's page, I saw some errors in some of the works listed as edited by Fawcett. The information is on the article's talk page. Also, could his article be assigned to a category in science fiction and fantasy? The Lost Children

Next up is a follow-up on a project I was working on for the latter part of 2013 and the early part of 2014 (and sporadically before then, and since then). I think I mentioned it before, but this involved making articles out of non-articles: restoring a few dozen deleted and redirected articles, starting articles from scratch out of redirects, and finding abandoned drafts and working on them. Most of these involved Designers & Dragons, a source I have been working with heavily, and for some I was able to find additional sources. Anything you can find, even if it is only a sentence or a quick reference, could be valuable.

I would like to be able to add more of these to User:BOZ#Saving the Lost Children.  :)

WikiCup 2014: The results

The 2014 WikiCup champion is Smithsonian Institution Godot13 (submissions), who flew the flag of the Smithsonian Institution. This was Godot13's first WikiCup competition and, over the 10 months of the competition, he has produced (among other contributions) two featured lists and an incredible 292 featured pictures, including architectural photographs and scans of historical documents. Wales Cwmhiraeth (submissions), 2012 and 2013 WikiCup champion, came in second, having written a large number of biology-related articles. Scotland Casliber (submissions), WikiCup finalist every year since 2010, finished in third.
