Capitalization in "Hear My Train A Comin'"[edit]

Hello Virditas! I'm back after a break and there are some odds and ends to address. What do you think of this recent comment on the talk page:[1] Should the "A" be upper case or lower case? Is it being used as an article (lower case) or some other function (upper case) MOS:CT? Does the use of a dash (a-comin') make any difference? –Ojorojo (talk) 17:36, 14 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@Ojorojo: We should probably have an article on a- prefixing because this comes up so much. I'm not a grammar wonk, so this kind of argumentation doesn't really interest me. According to several sources, the user is correct, although there are exceptions for some words.[2][3][4] It can be traced to 16th century British English, with popular American usage found in Appalachian English. Viriditas (talk) 19:49, 14 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the sources. It appears that a hyphenated usage is the most common. However, there is nothing about capitalization in titles. I don't really care, but don't feel like changing article titles, etc. back and forth. I'll bring it up at Wikipedia talk:Manual of Style/Capital letters. —Ojorojo (talk) 20:14, 14 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@Ojorojo: On Wikipedia at least, it wouldn't be uppercase. It would look like, for example, "A Hard Rain's a-Gonna Fall". Viriditas (talk) 20:22, 14 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Brought it up here: Wikipedia talk:Manual of Style/Capital letters#Capitalization of a-prefixed words in titles. Thanks again. —Ojorojo (talk) 20:39, 14 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

...for coming to my defense. He accuses me of being aggressive. I can hardly imagine anything more aggressive than this. But it's him saying it, so that makes it OK, eh? You raised an interesting question about the culture he operates in. That could well explain it. I didn't understand what he was trying to get at, before you posed your hypothesis; but then again, I don't hang out with drunkards, so all I know about others' personalities is what I see when they're sober. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 13:09, 18 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@Vesuvius Dogg: I'm not at home right now, but I own the book The Art of Paul Gauguin. If there is something in there (and I'm fairly sure there is) I can snap a photo of the text and Dropbox it to you a bit later tonight, if you like. Viriditas (talk) 00:34, 20 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
That could be very interesting, yes, if the book makes mention of it. Everything I've come across has said that the painting didn't generate significant study or analysis until after 2008, but a broader discussion of Gauguin's use and borrowing of Tahitian/Javanese/Peruvian iconography would be welcome. I was living in LA when the painting was acquired and it obviously got under my skin -- one of my favorites in a museum filled with them. Thanks for your help, and feel free to directly edit as well! I would certainly welcome it. Vesuvius Dogg (talk) 00:47, 20 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Arnnon Geshuri[edit]

Hello Viriditas, Was the WMF board fully aware of Arnnon Geshuri's central role in a major anticompetitive scandal at Google when they approved his appointment to the board? In 2010, the Justice Department shut down the illegal collusion between Google and five other Silicon Valley corporations. Geshuri helped manage that collusion for Google. A class action lawsuit settled in September, 2015 forced those companies to pay $415 million in compensation to 64,000 employees whose careers were damaged by the conspiracy that Geshuri was part of. Geshuri was directly involved in the ugly and humiliating termination of a woman who did not comply with the illegal scheme. He was chastised by federal judge Lucy Koh for attempting to pull Facebook into the conspiracy, and threatening retaliation if they didn't. Details can be found at User:Cullen328/Arnnon Geshuri. Nomination of Cannabis dispensary for deletion[edit]

A discussion is taking place as to whether the article Cannabis dispensary is suitable for inclusion in Wikipedia according to Wikipedia's policies and guidelines or whether it should be deleted.

The article will be discussed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Cannabis dispensary until a consensus is reached, and anyone is welcome to contribute to the discussion. The nomination will explain the policies and guidelines which are of concern. The discussion focuses on high-quality evidence and our policies and guidelines.

Users may edit the article during the discussion, including to improve the article to address concerns raised in the discussion. However, do not remove the article-for-deletion notice from the top of the article. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 17:04, 21 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

The cannabis dispensary matter[edit]

You were within your rights to move it to draft space. I am pleased with the actions Martin took. Do note that the AN close said AfD is best once AfC is approved, but guidelines still say you can boldly Draftify.

I do trust your judgment about the quality of the article itself. Maybe I did err in not having scrutinized it more carefully. After all, it will get lots of page hits, and we don't want visitors to be mislead. And had I asked him to wait, none of this would have happened.

But once in the mainspace, I feel you erred in moving the article back to draft space while alternatives were available. Sure, guidelines allow it, but was it the best thing to do? Here is my reasoning:

You did it to prevent such an article from existing in the mainspace. The benefit was that readers would not be viewing a false or misleading article, even for a short time. Reasonable. The risk was that the user, a newcomer, would be upset and leave.

So, weighing out the two hazards:

  • an article in the mainspace for a few hours that should not be there

vs.

  • possibly chasing away a newcomer

For me, an easy decision: anything other than draftifying it without discussing it with him first would be the plan. He was understandably bitten, crestfallen, put off Wikipedia, crushed, gutted, etc.

This is a newcomer whose first and only creation was Cannabis dispensary. He spent approximately 12 hours on that, and now maybe he's gone forever. Wikipedia may have just lost a potential five years and fifty-thousand edits, or more.

Respectfully yours, Anna Frodesiak (talk) 22:48, 21 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I've asked Potguru to walk from the article and let the rest of the community shape it. Would you consider doing the same?

As you are also part of the community, I would understand if you insist on staying involved. I just want the highest chances for Potguru to become longterm. @Viriditas - Fantastic to see someone with a real knowledge of this topics sources....just a side question what would you say is the best source for growing info ...is someone like Michael Straumietis considered a real expert? I am talking about plant nutrition and soil sciences? There was an argument awhile back about if we should add info in strain articles and by whom? -- Moxy (talk) 20:40, 23 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Moxy: unfortunately, when it comes to cannabis, the best source for growing info is other growers. But really, it's bog standard at this point; it's not exactly rocket science, so it should be easy to source. Although it would be easy to say that Straumietis is not a RS for anything other than his product line, if you have a particular source in question, I would love to review it. Given the ongoing, long-term taxonomy dispute, and the newly proposed reclassification by John McPartland, it probably isn't helpful to point to a source from 1998 for an older scheme when new techniques have made it possible to clear up the confusion. Extreme wealth[edit]

Hello, my friend. User:Anna Frodesiak/Red sandbox was shipped off the mainspace, understandably. I thought others would shape it. They didn't. :)

How about a navbox called "Extreme wealth"? Viable? Thoughts?

I'm thinking groups called "Entities" or something that could have subgroups like People, Families, Organizations, Nations, and such. It could have a group like "Terms", something like that.

Oh, subgroup organizations could have subgroups like "education" (orgs with huge endowments like Harvard), "religious" (orgs like the Catholic Church, Scientology, etc.), "companies" (Apple, Exxon, etc.)

So....viable? :) Anna Frodesiak (talk) 01:29, 28 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

merging articles[edit]

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Anna_Frodesiak#gonna_be_bold

I want to avoid a later "If a page gets merged, and someone later objects, then a new discussion can be held. Mergers can be easily reversed if a consensus against the merger is formed shortly after the merger was performed." so I am telling you that I intend to merge the pages as presented here:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Synthetic_cannabis#It.27s_been_a_month_-_gonna_merge_the_pages

And then I intend to make the case that "Synthetic Marijuana" is the correct term for the page, but that is a separate issue which I intend to handle seperately.

So let me know if you have any problem with my merging: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Synthetic_cannabis with https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Synthetic_cannabinoid

I intend the merge to be selective where I find duplication and I intend the article to be titled synthetic cannabinoid (as there is no such thing as synthetic "cannabis" unless one is to mean a plastic plant that looks like a pot plant). --Potguru (talk) 01:17, 1 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Editor of the Week : nominations needed![edit]

The Editor of the Week initiative has been recognizing editors since 2013 for their hard work and dedication. Editing Wikipedia can be disheartening and tedious at times; the weekly Editor of the Week award lets its recipients know that their positive behaviour and collaborative spirit is appreciated. The response from the honorees has been enthusiastic and thankful.

The list of nominees is running short, and so new nominations are needed for consideration. Have you come across someone in your editing circle who deserves a pat on the back for improving article prose regularly, making it easier to understand? Or perhaps someone has stepped in to mediate a contentious dispute, and did an excellent job. Do you know someone who hasn't received many accolades and is deserving of greater renown? Is there an editor who does lots of little tasks well, such as cleaning up citations?

Please help us thank editors who display sustained patterns of excellence, working tirelessly in the background out of the spotlight, by submitting your nomination for Editor of the Week today!

Proposed deletion of Trivial objections[edit]

The article Trivial objections has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Article has been marked as unsourced, as having original research, and as being written as a personal reflection for four years. No changes have been made.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Rogermx (talk) 20:02, 28 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Rogermx: I contested the PROD, simply because Viriditas is on a long break due to health problems, so I think that it would be difficult for him to respond to your message, which somewhat undermines the way that PROD is intended to work. What are you doing on Kamehameha day?[edit]

Just wondering.--Mark Miller (talk) 04:54, 19 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Patrick Ching[edit]

In 2008 you gave tips on my first article that was being deleted. I just now fixed it. I am supposed to contact the people who deleted it but they are no longer around. Not sure if you are, if so can you look? By the way, appreciate you took the time to offer suggestions and didn't just act like a meanie. Which seems to happen a lot here. Liliuokalani[edit]

Aloha, Viriditas. You should help in the recent expansion on Liliuokalani. I know this was something that we wanted to do back in the day when the Hawaii WikiProject was active. It has been eight year since then, can you believe it? It would be awesome if you are able to help. Mahalo!--KAVEBEAR (talk) 05:28, 30 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

That is sad to hear. I hope he is well and recovers.--KAVEBEAR (talk) 06:02, 30 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

New Usercheck[edit]

Hello: if you are receiving this, you have transcluded Example (talk · message · contribs · global contribs · deleted contribs · page moves · user creation · block user · block log · count · total · logs · summary · email | lu · rfas · rfb · arb · rfc · lta · checkuser · spi · socks confirmedsuspected | rfar · rfc · rfcu · ssp | current rights · rights log (local) · rights log (global/meta) | rights · renames · blocks · protects · deletions · rollback · admin · logs | UHx · AfD · UtHx · UtE), I have created a Usercheck with more content, that I plan to update with more when I come across it, as of right now Usercheck-Super has only three more things than Usercheck-full, but as mentioned, I plan to update it, the three things I mentioned are pending changes log, giving all of the revisions you have accepted or rejected, Abuse filter, which gives you the ability to examine your edits, and get many details about an edit, along with Articles created, which links to a page which gives a breakdown of all the pages you have made. Hi Ya![edit]

Hi, its Selene Scott. I haven't been on here regularly in some time, and suddenly I finally have some subjects to start a new page with. Problem is I have forgotten how to do that. I remember the guidelines and requirements for starting a new page, I just don't see any new page link in my editing toolbar....Help Selene Scott (talk) 04:02, 12 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

ArbCom Elections 2016: Voting now open![edit]

Hello, Viriditas. Voting in the 2016 Arbitration Committee elections is open from Monday, 00:00, 21 November through Sunday, 23:59, 4 December to all unblocked users who have registered an account before Wednesday, 00:00, 28 October 2016 and have made at least 150 mainspace edits before Sunday, 00:00, 1 November 2016.

It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2016 election, please review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Mdann52 (talk) 22:08, 21 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Editor of the Week seeking nominations (and a new facilitator)[edit]

In addition, the WikiProject is seeking a new facilitator/coordinator to handle the logistics of the award. Please contact L235 if you are interested in helping with the logistics of running the award in any capacity. Remove your name from here to unsubscribe from further EotW-related messages. Thanks, Kevin (aka L235 · t · c) via MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 05:19, 30 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
